The emergence and mutation of pathogenic viruses have been occurring at an unprecedented rate in recent decades. The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has developed into a global public health crisis due to extensive viral transmission. In situ RNA mapping has revealed angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) expression to be highest in the nose and lower in the lung, pointing to nasal susceptibility as a predominant route for infection and the cause of subsequent pulmonary effects. By blocking viral attachment and entry at the nasal airway using a cyclodextrin-based formulation, a preventative therapy can be developed to reduce viral infection at the site of entry. Here, we assess the safety and antiviral efficacy of cyclodextrin-based formulations. From these studies, hydroxypropyl beta-cyclodextrin (HPBCD) and hydroxypropyl gamma-cyclodextrin (HPGCD) were then further evaluated for antiviral effects using SARS-CoV-2 pseudotypes. Efficacy findings were confirmed with SARS-CoV-2 Delta variant infection of Calu-3 cells and using a K18-hACE2 murine model. Intranasal pre-treatment with HPBCD-based formulations reduced viral load and inflammatory signaling in the lung. In vitro efficacy studies were further conducted using lentiviruses, murine hepatitis virus (MHV), and influenza A virus subtype H1N1. These findings suggest HPBCD may be used as an agnostic barrier against transmissible pathogens, including but not limited to SARS-CoV-2.

Introduction Periodic surveys on tobacco use patterns and other aspects of tobacco use among school-going adolescents in Malaysia provide information on the effectiveness of anti-smoking measures implemented. However, such information is limited in Malaysia. We investigated the prevalence of smoking and other related aspects among middle-secondary school students in Malaysia from the years 2003– 2016 to fill this gap. Methods We analyzed data from the Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) 2003, GYTS 2009, and the Tobacco and Electronic Cigarette Survey among Malaysia Adolescents (TECMA) 2016. The surveys employed multistage sampling to select representative samples of adolescents attending secondary school in Malaysia. Data were collected using a pre-validated self-administered anonymous questionnaire adopted from the GYTS. Results Between 2003 and 2016, major changes occurred in which there were reductions in the prevalence of ever smoking, current smoking, and susceptibility to smoking. Reductions were also observed in exposure to SHS in public places and in the home. The proportion of school-going adolescents who support a ban on smoking in public places increased between 2013 to 2016, and there was a significant reduction in the proportion of respondents that were offered ‘free’ cigarettes by tobacco company representatives. However, there was no difference in the proportion of adolescents who initiated smoking before the age of 10 years and current smokers seeking advice to quit smoking across the time period. Conclusions Our study indicates that the smoking policies and measures have been effective in reducing smoking prevalence, secondhand smoke exposure, and access to cigarettes, among school-going adolescents in Malaysia. However, measures to reduce smoking initiation and increase smoking cessation need to be strengthened to reduce the burden of smoking-related diseases in Malaysia in the long-term.

This research is a preliminary study on the preparation of wood plastic composites (WPC) from corn husk fiber (CHF) and recycled polystyrene foam (rPS). The effects of fiber content and alkaline treatment on tensile, thermal, water absorption and morphological properties of the composites were investigated. The rPS/CHF composites were prepared using melt compounding and compression moulding processes. The results showed that an increase of fiber content increased the tensile strength, modulus, and thermal stability (Td50%) of composites. However, the water absorption of composites increased vastly as the fiber content increases. The addition of more fiber also caused an earlier thermal degradation to composites. Alkaline treatment has improved the tensile strength, modulus, thermal stability (Td10%), and also reduced water absorption of rPS/CHF composites. The WPS prepared from rPS and treated CHF shows better tensile and thermal properties with lower water absorption.

Abstract Background Connexin 43 (Cx43) plays a central role in the inflammatory response and wound healing. Targeting Cx43 expression reduces inflammation in a variety of injuries. The expression pattern of Cx43 has not been described for many inflammatory skin diseases. Objectives To describe the expression patterns of Cx43 in eczema, psoriasis, Steven‐Johnson syndrome/toxic epidermal necrolysis. Methods Archival skin biopsies from patients with eczema, psoriasis, and Steven‐Johnson syndrome/toxic epidermal necrosis were identified and examined, with sister sections stained for Cx43 and imaged by confocal microscopy. All samples were compared to age and site‐matched normal skin controls. Results Epidermal Cx43 is reduced in acute eczema, absent in regions of spongiosis, and is highly elevated in subacute and chronic eczema. In plaque psoriasis, Cx43 is overexpressed in areas with psoriasiform hyperplasia with a fish‐scale‐like appearance but is lost in regions surrounding neutrophil microabscesses. Cx43 staining is strong in the neutrophils within these microabscesses. In SJS/TEN, Cx43 expression is elevated in areas bordering normal tissue but is rapidly lost in areas of keratinocyte necrosis. Conclusions Dynamic changes in Cx43 levels are seen in inflammatory skin diseases and may represent future potential therapeutic targets.

Introduction We investigated the prevalence of children’s exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS) in the car of their parents/guardians and the associated factors. Methods A self-administered validated questionnaire was used to obtain data from the nationally representative samples of school-going adolescents aged 11–19 years in Malaysia. Prevalence rates were computed and chi-squared tests and multiple logistic regression were conducted. Results Of the participants, 23.3% reported exposure to SHS at least once in the car of their parents/guardians during the last 7 days before the survey. The prevalence and likelihood of SHS exposure were significantly higher in Malays, descendants of natives of Sabah and Sarawak, schools in rural areas, females, and current smokers. However, age group and knowledge on the harmful effects of SHS were not significant after adjusting for confounding effects. Conclusions A substantial proportion of school-going adolescents were exposed to secondhand smoke in the car of their parents/guardians. This highlights the need for effective tobacco control measures to include health promotion and smoke-free car regulations to be introduced to prevent severe health hazards and to reduce smoking initiation among non-smoking adolescents.

Introduction The continuous monitoring of smoking prevalence and its associated factors is an integral part of anti-smoking programmes and valuable for the evaluation of the effectiveness of anti-smoking measures and policies. This study aimed at determining prevalence of smoking and identifying socio-demographic factors associated with smoking among adults in Malaysia aged 15 years and over. Methods This is a cross-sectional study with a representative sample of 21 445 adults in Malaysia, aged 15 years and over, selected via a stratified, two-stage proportionateto- size sampling method. Data were obtained from face-to-face interviews by trained research assistants, using a standard validated questionnaire. Multivariable logistic regression was performed to determine socio-demographic factors associated with smoking among Malaysians. Results The overall prevalence of smoking was 22.8% (95% CI: 21.9–23.8%), with males having a significantly higher prevalence compared to females (43.0%, 95% CI: 41.1–44.6 vs 1.4%, 95% CI: 1.1–1.7). The highest smoking prevalence was observed among other ethnicities (35.7%), those aged 25–44 years (59.3%), and low educational attainment (25.2%). Males, those with lower educational attainment and Malays were significantly associated with smoking. Conclusions The prevalence of smoking among Malaysians, aged 15 years and over, remains high despite the implementation of several anti-smoking measures over the past decades. Specially tailored anti-smoking policies or measures, particularly targeting males, the Malays, younger adults and those with lower educational attainment, are greatly warranted to reduce the prevalence of smoking in Malaysia.

Objectives: This study aimed to examine correlations between lumbar kinematics, functional disability and fear avoidance beliefs among adults with nonspecific chronic low back pain (LBP). Methods: This crosssectional study was conducted between March and December 2014. A total of 32 adults diagnosed with nonspecific chronic LBP were recruited from outpatients attending either an orthopaedic clinic at a university hospital or a private physiotherapy clinic in Malaysia. Lumbar kinematics were measured using sensors attached at the first lumbar (L1) and second sacral (S2) vertebrae levels. The Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) and Fear-Avoidance Beliefs Questionnaire (FABQ) were used to assess degree of functional disability and fear avoidance beliefs, respectively. Results: For maximum range of motion, positive correlations were observed between ODI scores and right lateral flexion and right rotation (P = 0.01 each), although there was a negative correlation with left rotation (P = 0.03). During 1996-1998 epidemiological survey of domestic Trichinella spiralis infection and serological survey on human beings were carried out in Yanling, Xuchang counties and Luohe city. By the artificial digestion method, the positive rates of pork in market and mutton were 1.6 % and 0.6 % respectively. Meat samples of pigs from pig-farms, cats and dogs were all negative for Trichinella larvae. Trichinellosis infection levels in rats captured in peasant households and places around abattoirs were 0.5 % and 4.1 % respectively (P < 0.05). By ELISA (double-antibody) with excretion-secretion (ES) antigens of Trichinella larvae, the positive rates of antibodies against Trichinella in sera of peasants and professional drivers were 2.2 % and 7.8 % (P < 0.05). The positive rates of antibodies in pigs from pig-farms and from peasant households were 1 % and 7 % respectively (P < 0.05). The levels of anti- Trichinella antibodies in rats captured in peasant households and places close to abattoirs were 0 % and 11.1 % respectively. Trichinella spiralis larvae were found in the washing meat slop in abattoirs.

Understanding citizens' evaluation of public urban green space (UGS) attributes and plant species features can inform greenspace design to meet public expectations. This study evaluated the public's responses to UGS attributes and plant species in Hong Kong using a questionnaire survey of 827 adult respondents. Principal component analysis followed by cluster analysis were applied to analyze the data. The respondents were differentiated into three groups (ecological, eclectic, and pragmatic users) based on the evaluations of UGS attributes. Additionally, three clusters (conservation supporters, all-round perfectionists, and safety defenders) were classified based on evaluating plant species features. Plant knowledge and gender were the main factors associated with respondents' evaluation profiles. Respondents with different expectations of UGS attributes harbored different evaluations of plant species features. The respondent groups agreed unanimously that similar plant species composition was deployed across UGS sites in Hong Kong. Respondents attaching importance to the conservation value of plant species (i.e., "conservation supporters") were more concerned about plant species selection. The conservation supporters were dissatisfied with the current plant selection strategy. A zonation strategy for large UGS could cater to a broad range of user demands and create a socially-inclusive venue for residents. Alternatively, a collection of small UGS in a given district can cover a range of functions. A study evaluated the effectiveness of an eLearning course on cytomegalovirus (CMV) prevention for general practitioners (GPs). The course aimed to improve GP knowledge of CMV and their intention to provide prevention counseling to patients. The study found that GPs who completed the course showed a significant increase in CMV knowledge and expressed a strong intention to routinely counsel pregnant women about CMV. The findings suggest that similar programs should be implemented for other maternity health professionals to promote CMV prevention. [Extracted from the article]

A study was conducted to determine if watching a short video on congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) would improve pregnant women's knowledge of and intended adherence to hygiene precautions. Participants were surveyed before and after watching the video, as well as 8 weeks later. The results showed that viewing the video significantly increased participants' knowledge scores and adherence to hygiene precautions. The majority of participants felt informed and agreed that the information in the video was important to know. Overall, the study suggests that the CMV video was effective in improving pregnant women's knowledge and adherence to hygiene precautions. [Extracted from the article]

This article, titled "EP03.02: Long-term developmental outcomes of children with a prenatal diagnosis of a variant of uncertain significance: the PrenatAL Microarray (PALM) study," examines the developmental outcomes of children with a prenatal diagnosis of a variant of uncertain significance (VUS). The study compares these children with a control group of children who did not have a fetal structural anomaly and had no copy number variant on prenatal chromosomal microarray. The results show that children with a VUS did not have significant differences in overall intellectual function, adaptive functioning, or behaviors associated with autism spectrum disorder compared to the control group. However, children in the VUS group performed slightly lower on verbal comprehension tasks. The study also found that mothers in the VUS group were younger at the time of giving birth compared to the control group. This article explores the lived experience of women with suspected cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection during pregnancy. The study conducted interviews with Australian women who had undergone serological testing for CMV during pregnancy. The findings revealed that participants had a lack of awareness about CMV, experienced high levels of stress and anxiety, supported screening for CMV but acknowledged that it may not be wanted by everyone, and relied on personal support and access to knowledgeable healthcare professionals. The interaction and response of the magnetic cloud-type structure with Earth's magnetosphere were modeled by the SWMF/BATS-R-US code. The conversion of magnetic (Em), kinetic (Ek), and internal (Ei ) energies was analyzed as well as the wave power integrated in the ultra-low frequency (ULF) range of the poloidal (Eϕ) and toroidal (Er ) electric field components in the equatorial region of the magnetosphere, in seven 2-hr long intervals, namely, I1 through I7. The intensity of energy conversion and wave activity for I1 and I7 intervals was negligible. The energy conversion started in the I2 interval and extended to the I3, I4, and I5 intervals. The power of the Eϕ and Er components in the dayside and nightside regions is clearly observed. The I4 corresponds to interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) Bz mostly southward and the I5 has similar amplitudes of the Bz and By components, corresponding to the period of the high geomagnetic activity. The conversion rate for the I4 and I5 was similar, however, the integrated power spectral density (IPSD) of the Eϕ and Er components is more intense in I5. During the I6 interval, with predominant IMF By, the energy conversion rate is intensified mostly for inner radial distances R < 6 RE, and the Ek component becomes close to zero for outer regions. The energy conversion regions are located spatially close to or overlapping with regions where the IPSD in the ULF range is intensified. The energy conversion in the inner magnetosphere occurred preferentially between Em and Ei, with the Ek energy component always present but with lower intensities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the safety and efficacy of visualized ultra-mini percutaneous nephrolithotripsy (VUMP) and flexible ureterorenoscopy (FURS) in the treatment of nephrolithiasis patients with 1.5-2.5 cm kidney stones and without hydronephrosis. PATIENTS AND METHODS: T he c linical d ata of 143 nephrolithiasis patients without hydronephrosis (from April 2017 to March 2021) were collected and analyzed, including 65 cases in the VUMP group and 78 cases in the FURS group. The general clinical data, operation time, hospitalization time, recent stone-free rate (RSFR), long-term stone free rate (four weeks after operation, LSFR), Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), Bruggermann comfort score (BCS), and surgical complications of the two groups were collected and analyzed. RESULTS: I n t he V UMP g roup, t he o peration time (49.14 ± 9.28 vs. 60.23 ± 9.45, p < 0.001), postoperative white blood cell count (11.05 ± 2.43 vs. 13.57 ± 2.71, p < 0.05) and BCS score (1.72 ± 0.80 vs. 2.81 ± 0.85, p < 0.001) were significantly lower than those of the FURS group, but the postoperative hemoglobin (8.25 ± 5.04 vs. 4.05 ± 3.07, p < 0.05), hospital stay (5.72 ± 1.75 vs. 3.12 ± 1.09, p < 0.001) and VAS score (3.18 ± 1.36 vs. 2.08 ± 1.28, p < 0.001) were significantly higher than those of the FURS group. Besides, the VUMP group was significantly higher than the FURS group in RSFR (90.32% vs. 72.22%, p < 0.05) and LSFR (95.38% vs. 85.89%, p < 0.05). The systemic inflammatory response syndrome rate (3.07% vs. 14.10%, p = 0.037) and total complications (9.23% vs. 20.51%, p = 0 .032) were s ignificantly l ower in t he V UMP group than in the FURS group. CONCLUSIONS: Both VUMP and FURS are safe and effective in the treatment of nephrolithiasis patients with 1.5-2.5 cm kidney stones and without hydronephrosis, and the former is preferable for higher SFR, shorter operation time and lower complication rate.
