Abstract

Small-scale farmers in developing countries are vulnerable and negatively impacted by climate change. To enhance resilience and decrease vulnerability, studies suggest three actions: adopting new varieties, changing cropping patterns, and improving irrigation. However, the effect of social capital on farmers' adaptation strategies has been overlooked. This study incorporated social capital and other factors identifies by previous studies, into the multiple choices adaptation decision model estimation using the multivariate probit model. Personal interviews using structured questionnaire were conducted from October to December 2019 through multistage random sampling process to identify 150 chili farming households in Malang Regency, East Java, Indonesia. The findings show that climate information affects the farmer's choice to change the cropping pattern; adopting new varieties was positively influenced by subsidies and climate information; while access to cooperatives and credit affected irrigation adaptation. Therefore, enhancing farmers' social capital could help dealing with the adverse impacts of climate change.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the farmers’ perception of climate change and estimate the association between socio-demographic characteristics and climate change perception. Using cross-sectional data from 302 farmers in East Java of Indonesia employs a few quantitative methods including frequency mean and chi-square test. The climate perception was indicated by recalling the farmers’ experience with climate-related indicators during the last 10 years. The finding indicated that the majority of farmers perceive the rain intensity, temperature, vegetation, also pest and disease increased. However, the farmers perceive the drought events are the same. This study confirms that farmers in our research location have a correct perception compared with the climate change real-time data. Furthermore, this study also indicated that education, total harvested area, land status, social network, cooperative membership, farmers group, and climate information were significantly associated with their perception of climate change, such as rain intensity, temperature, drought, vegetation, also pest and disease. This study provides a significant contribution to agricultural development to improve farmers’ perception of climate change.

Abstract

Home gardens are traditional agricultural systems, particularly common in the tropics, characterized by high plant diversity and play an important role for local residents' livelihoods. Home gardens are reservoirs of biological diversity. This study aims to analyze the diversity and utilization of plants in the traditional home garden. The study was conducted in Bangkalan District, Madura Island, East Java Province, Indonesia. Data was collected in three sub-districts based on the different sea-level surfaces from June 2019 to February 2020. The techniques used were plant inventory, participatory observations, and individual interviews. A total of 30 home gardens were observed in this study. Plant diversity was calculated using the Shannon diversity index (H). The results of the Shannon index indicate that there is medium species diversity in the home gardens in the Bangkalan district (the diversity ranged from 0.48 to 1.81). Plants grown for fruit, vegetables, ornamentals, medicine, food crops, and other purposes. Traditional communities utilize their home gardens mostly for subsistence purposes.
