Background: The abnormalities in brain function and structure of patients with functional constipation (FC) have been identified using multiple neuroimaging studies and have confirmed the abnormal processing of visceral sensation at the level of the central nervous system (CNS) as an important reason for FC. As an important basis for central information transfer, the role of the white matter (WM) networks in the pathophysiology of FC has not been investigated. This study aimed to explore the topological organization of WM networks in patients with FC and its correlation with clinical variables.Methods and Analysis: In this study, 70 patients with FC and 45 age- and gender-matched healthy subjects (HS) were recruited. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) data and clinical variables were acquired from each participant. WM networks were constructed using the deterministic fiber tracking approach, and the global and nodal properties of the WM networks were compared using graph theory analysis between patients with FC and HS. The relationship between the representative nodal characteristics–nodal betweenness and clinical parameters was assessed using partial correlation analysis.Results: Patients with FC showed increased nodal characteristics in the left superior frontal gyrus (orbital part), right middle frontal gyrus (orbital part), and right anterior cingulate and paracingulate (P < 0.05, corrected for false discovery rate) and decreased nodal characteristics in the left caudate and left thalamus (P < 0.05, corrected for false discovery rate) compared with HS. The duration of FC was negatively correlated with the nodal betweenness of the left thalamus (r = −0.354, P = 0.04, corrected for false discovery rate).Conclusion: The results indicated the alternations in WM networks of patients with FC and suggested the abnormal visceral sensation processing in the CNS from the perspective of large-scale brain WM network.

This work reports a simple bubble generator for the high-speed generation of microbubbles with constant cumulative production. To achieve this, a gas–liquid co-flowing microfluidic device with a tiny capillary orifice as small as 5 μm is fabricated to produce monodisperse microbubbles. The diameter of the microbubbles can be adjusted precisely by tuning the input gas pressure and flow rate of the continuous liquid phase. The co-flowing structure ensures the uniformity of the generated microbubbles, and the surfactant in the liquid phase prevents coalescence of the collected microbubbles. The diameter coefficient of variation (CV) of the generated microbubbles can reach a minimum of 1.3%. Additionally, the relationship between microbubble diameter and the gas channel orifice is studied using the low Capillary number (Ca) and Weber number (We) of the liquid phase. Moreover, by maintaining a consistent gas input pressure, the CV of the cumulative microbubble volume can reach 3.6% regardless of the flow rate of the liquid phase. This method not only facilitates the generation of microbubbles with morphologic stability under variable flow conditions, but also ensures that the cumulative microbubble production over a certain period of time remains constant, which is important for the volume-dominated application of chromatographic analysis and the component analysis of natural gas. The aberrant static functional connectivity of brain network has been widely investigated in patients with functional constipation (FCon). However, the dynamics of brain functional connectivity in FCon patients remained unknown. This study aimed to detect the brain dynamics of functional connectivity states and network topological organizations of FCon patients and investigate the correlations of the aberrant brain dynamics with symptom severity. Eighty‐three FCon patients and 80 healthy subjects (HS) were included in data analysis. The spatial group independent component analysis, sliding‐window approach, k‐means clustering, and graph‐theoretic analysis were applied to investigate the dynamic temporal properties and coupling patterns of functional connectivity states, as well as the time‐variation of network topological organizations in FCon patients. Four reoccurring functional connectivity states were identified in k‐means clustering analysis. Compared to HS, FCon patients manifested the lower occurrence rate and mean dwell time in the state with a complex connection between default mode network and cognitive control network, as well as the aberrant anterior insula–cortical coupling patterns in this state, which were significantly correlated with the symptom severity. The graph‐theoretic analysis demonstrated that FCon patients had higher sample entropy at the nodal efficiency of anterior insula than HS. The current findings provided dynamic perspectives for understanding the brain connectome of FCon and laid the foundation for the potential treatment of FCon based on brain connectomics. Anisotropic microparticles containing functional nanomaterials have attracted growing interest due to their enhanced performance in diverse applications ranging from catalysts to environmental remediation. However, the preparation of anisotropic microparticles with highly controlled morphologies and dimensions usually suffers from a limited material choice. Here, we develop a facile strategy to continuously prepare anisotropic microparticles with their shapes changing from spherical to pear-like, maraca-like and rod-like for enhanced water decontamination. Anisotropic microparticles are produced by deforming oil-droplet templates within microfibers and then locking their shapes via thermo/photo-polymerization. The sizes and geometries of the oil-droplet templates are precisely controlled by varying the fluid flow conditions. In addition, porous spherical and rod-like microparticles are functionalized for photocatalytic degradation of organic contaminants by incorporating functional TiO2 and Fe3O4 nanoparticles. Compared to spherical microparticles with equal volume, functionalized rod-like microparticles exhibit better performance in removal of contaminants due to their larger specific surface area, which facilitates the contact between the loaded catalysts and organic pollutants. Moreover, the magnetic rod-like microparticles can be easily recovered and reused without deterioration of catalytic performance. The proposed strategy in this study is useful for producing anisotropic microparticles with well-tailored shapes via different polymerization methods and extending their potential applications. Syntactic foams with fly ash cenospheres or commercial microballoons as fillers have been widely used in various applications ranging from aerospace to marine fields and the automotive industry. However, these two extensively adopted fillers possess multiple shortcomings, such as variations in the composition, material degeneration and distinct structural heterogeneity, which will inevitably hamper accurate prediction of the structure–property relationship and the corresponding design of the syntactic foams, reducing material utilization. Here, we present a microfluidic-based approach integrated with a subsequent heat treatment process to engineer syntactic foam fillers with a predefined composition, specified dimensional scope and reduced structural heterogeneity. These fillers are fully guaranteed by the synergy of the flexible and controllable generation of droplet templates with hydrodynamic regulation and rational selection of the nanoparticle dynamic response with respect to the heating temperature. In addition, two distinct surface morphologies have been observed with a temperature demarcation point of 1473 K, further endowing the fillers with multiplicity and optionality, simultaneously laying the foundation to regulate the properties of the syntactic foams through the diversity of the filler selection. Then, we fabricated a syntactic foam specimen by mold casting, and the integrity of the fillers inside was verified using an elaborate buoyancy comparison experiment, exhibiting its potential value in lightweight related applications. As the fillers derived from our approach show significant advantages over conventional ones, they will provide considerable benefits for the regulation and improvement of syntactic foam fillers in many practical applications. We present a flexible and noninvasive approach for efficient continuous micromixing and microreaction based on direct current-induced thermal buoyancy convection in a single microfluidic unit. Theoretically, microfluids in this microsystem are unevenly heated by powering the asymmetrically arranged microheater. The thermal buoyancy convection is then formed to induce microvortices that cause effective fluidic interface disturbance, thereby promoting the diffusion and convective mass transfer. The temperature distribution and the convection flow in the microchip are first characterized and studied, which can be flexibly adjusted by changing the DC voltage. Then the mixing performance of the presented method is validated by joint numerical and experimental analyses. Specifically, at U = 7 V, the mixing efficiencies are higher than 90% as the flow rate is lower than Qv= 600 nL/s. So high-quality chemical or biochemical reactions needing both suitable heating and efficient mixing can be achieved using this method. Finally, as one example, we use this method to synthesize nano-sized cuprous oxide (Cu2O) particles by effectively mixing the Benedict's solution and glucose buffer. Remarkably, the particle size can be tuned by changing the voltage and the concentration of Benedict's solution. Electrically controlled droplet manipulation is attractive for lots of applications ranging from material synthesis and drug delivery. However, the present techniques using bulky and expensive power supplies to generate high‐voltage electrical signals are easy to cause electrode electrolysis, bubble formation in buffer solution, and are incapable for point‐of‐care testing. Herein, a novel and portable electrical method for self‐powered emulsion droplet core coalescence and release based on triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) is presented. The electrical signal with a 2.25 kV open‐voltage and a 35 µA short‐circuit current can be conveniently generated via frictional electrification effect, and the harmful electrochemical reaction in solutions can be avoided. The high transient pulse voltage and stable sinusoidal signal between two electrodes in microfluidic device can generate a strong electric field, which causes apparent Maxwell electrical stresses at droplet interfaces and subsequently promotes the core coalescence and release of double‐emulsions. By adjusting the voltage magnitude, the core coalescence and release behaviors of double‐emulsion droplets can be controllably achieved, followed by the synthesis copper‐based metal–organic framework (Cu‐MOF) nanoparticles. Five arc-shaped gaps were designed on the bipolar electrode to actuate alternately opposite-direction asymmetrical induced-charge electro-osmosis (AICEO) vortices, and we developed a microfluidic device using such asymmetrical vortices to realize particle separation. When the buoyancy force dominates in the vertical direction, particles stay at the channel bottom, experiencing a left deflection under the vortices in the convex arc areas. In contrast, when the levitation force induced by AICEO vortices overcomes the buoyancy force, particles are elevated to a high level and captured by right vortices, undergoing a right deflection under the vortices in the concave arc areas. Moreover, when particles pass through the concave or convex arc areas every time, their right or left deflections are enlarged gradually and the separation becomes more complete. Remarkably, as the light/small particles at low voltage, heavy/large particles can be elevated to a new high level and undergo right deflection by increasing the voltage. We first explicitly proved the separation principle and analyzed numerically its capability in density- and size-based separation. Depending on the study of the voltage-dependent AICEO characterization of 4 μm silica and 4 μm PMMA particles, we experimentally verified the feasibility of our device in density-based separation. According to the investigation of sensitivity to particle size, we separated multi-sized yeast cells to confirm the capability of our device in size-based separation. Finally, we extracted yeast cells from impeding particles, obtaining 96% purity. Additionally, we designed a 500 μm distance between the focusing and separation region to circumvent the problems caused by electric-field interaction. Our AICEO-based separation method holds potential to serve as a useful tool in transesterification of microalgal lipids to biodiesel and solar cell processing because of its outstanding advantages, such as gentle conditions, contact-free separation, high-sensitivity and high-efficiency separation capability. It is becoming more difficult to use bulk mixing and bi-fluid micromixing in multi-step continuous-flow reactions, multicomponent reactions, and nanoparticle synthesis because they typically involve multiple reactants. To date, most micromixing studies, both passive and active, have focused on how to efficiently mix two fluids, while micromixing of three or more fluids together (multi-fluid mixing) has been rarely explored. This study is the first on tri-fluid mixing in microchannels. We investigated tri-fluid mixing in three microchannel models: a straight channel, a classical staggered herringbone mixing (SHM) channel, and a three-dimensional (3D) X-crossing microchannel. Numerical simulations and experiments were jointly conducted. A two-step experimental process was performed to determine the tri-fluid mixing efficiencies of these microchannels. We found that the SHM cannot significantly enhance mixing of three streams especially for a Reynolds number (Re) higher than 10. However, the 3D X-crossing channel based on splitting-and-recombination (SAR) showed effective tri-mixing performance over a wide Re range up to 275 (with a corresponding flow rate of 1972.5 μL min−1), thereby enabling high microchannel throughput. Furthermore, this tri-fluid micromixing process was used to synthesize a kind of Si-based nanoparticle. This achieved a narrower particle size distribution than traditional bulk mixing. Controlled release of multiple actives after encapsulation in a microenvironment is significant for various biological and chemical applications such as controlled drug delivery and transplantation of encapsulated cells. However, traditional systems often lack efficient encapsulation and release of multiple actives, especially when incorporated substances must be released at a targeted location. Here, we present a straightforward approach to release multiple actives at a prescribed position in microfluidic systems; one or two actives are encapsulated in water-in-oil-in-water emulsion droplets, followed by controlled release of the actives via an alternating current electric field. An electric field-induced compression due to Maxwell–Wagner interfacial polarization overcomes the disjoining pressure at the thin shell and leads to the thinning and rupture of the oil layer of the droplets, resulting in the release of the encapsulated actives to the suspending medium. This technique is feasible for encapsulation and release of various reagents in terms of ion species and ion concentrations. Moreover, polymer nanoparticles and yeast cells can also be included in the droplets and then be released at targeted locations. Induced-charge electroosmosis (ICEO) phenomena have been attracting considerable attention as a means for pumping and mixing in microfluidic systems with the advantage of simple structures and low-energy consumption. We propose the first effort to exploit a fixed-potential ICEO flow around a floating electrode for microfluidic mixing. In analogy with the field effect transistor (FET) in microelectronics, the floating electrode act as a “gate” electrode for generating asymmetric ICEO flow and thus the device is called an AC-flow FET (AC-FFET). We take advantage of a tandem electrode configuration containing two biased center metal strips arranged in sequence at the bottom of the channel to generate asymmetric vortexes. The current device is manufactured on low-cost glass substrates via an easy and reliable process. Mixing experiments were conducted in the proposed device and the comparison between simulation and experimental results was also carried out, which indicates that the micromixer permits an efficient mixing effect. The mixing performance can be further enhanced by the application of a suitable phase difference between the driving electrode and the gate electrode or a square wave signal. Finally, we performed a critical analysis of the proposed micromixer in comparison with different mixer designs using a comparative mixing index (CMI). We utilize an ac electric field to trigger the on-demand fusion of two aqueous cores inside water-in-oil-in-water (W/O/W) double-emulsion drops. We attribute the coalescence phenomenon to field-induced structural polarization and breakdown of the stress balance at interfaces. We propose a novel continuous-flow microfluidic particle concentrator with a specified focusing-particle number ratio (FR) at different channel outlets using induced-charge electroosmosis (ICEO). The particle-focusing region contains two floating electrodes of asymmetric widths L2 and L1 in the gap between a driving electrode pair, all of which are fabricated in parallel in the main channel. Applying an AC voltage over the driving electrodes, an ICEO flow with two vortexes can be induced over each of the two floating electrodes, and the actuation range of the ICEO vortex is proportional to the respective electrode size. We establish a preliminary physical model for the value of FR: at a moderate voltage and frequency range, FR approaches L2/L1 due to the scaled ICEO actuation range; by further modifying the voltage or frequency, FR is freely adjustable because of the variation in ICEO velocity. Furthermore, by connecting multiple focusing regions in series, i.e., high FR = (L2/L1)n can be conveniently generated in an n-stage flow focusing device. Hollow spherical shells made of various oxides have long been used as filler materials to prepare light-weight materials with high specific strength. We present the fabrication of bubble-filled silica microfibers with controlled size and structure by using multiphase flow in a coaxial glass capillary device. The multiphase flow is controlled to generate a jetting gas-in-water-in-oil core–sheath stream, which is converted to flexible nanoparticle–polymer composite fibers filled with bubbles. The production rate of these bubble fibers can reach up to 2000 cm/min. These flexible fibers can be manipulated to desired shapes or architectures and subsequently be sintered via thermal treatment. We demonstrate the fabrication of bubble fiber-filled light weight composite, which potentially has a significant advantage over conventional light-weight composites made with spherical hollow particles. There is increasing interest in the "Internet of Things" (IoT) and the development of wearable intelligent devices with human–machine interfaces (HMIs). Flexible touch panels have received wide attention because they are intuitive HMIs. However, most existing flexible touch panels can only detect a single touch or rely on massive electrodes and complex sensor arrays for multi-touch detection. Herein, a long service life (>5 months), wearable, and Multifunctional HMI (MHMI) with only two electrodes is reported for various applications. An anti-drying, transparent, ion-conducting, and tough organohydrogel with satisfactory stretchability (>450%) and long life is developed as a sensing material. A parallel mutual inspection detection structure based on ion conductors is designed to detect single or multiple touches accurately and sensitively. This structure comprises a pair of organohydrogel strips in a horizontal or spiral form embedded in a flexible substrate to construct one-dimensional (1D) or two-dimensional (2D) MHMIs. The 1D- and 2D-MHMIs can be used as linear controllers and 2D movement controllers, respectively. The multi-touch recognition function endows the MHMIs with greater operability by programmatically implementing multi-device switching and multi-function selection in a versatile and effective manner.
