Abstract

Long‐term monitoring of forest tree communities is a basis for elucidating forest structure and dynamics and for evaluating ecosystem functions such as primary production. Because global climate change is changing forest ecosystems from the local to the global scale, it is essential to document long‐term monitoring data of forests to examine the temporal and geographical trends of forest changes. We report monitoring data of 45 forest plots (average area 0.69 ha; range 0.0325–6.25 ha) at 27 sites in Japan. These plots are situated within 32.38° N to 43.36° N and at elevations ranging from 8 to 2453 m above sea level. The forest plots include both old‐growth and secondary forests, and cover various forest biomes, such as warm‐temperate evergreen forests, temperate deciduous broadleaved forests, and boreal or sub‐alpine coniferous forests. In each plot, all living trees and lianas larger than a certain minimum size (typically 15 cm stem girth at breast height) were repeatedly measured and survival and recruitment of stems were recorded over 5–40 years (average 17.3 years). The data are presented in the format used by the Monitoring Sites 1000 Project in Japan (Ishihara et al. 2011, Ecological Research, 26, 1007–1008) and in the sample‐based Darwin Core format. This dataset expands existing open monitoring data for Japanese forests and thereby facilitates further meta‐analysis of forest community structures and changes in relation to climate change and other drivers. Abstract

We present the largest freely available herbivory dataset for Japan representing data collected from a network of 19 natural forest sites across the country. Sampled network sites were part of the Monitoring Sites 1000 Project organized by the Ministry of the Environment. Sites were located across a range of climate zones, from subarctic to subtropical, and broadleaf trees (both evergreen and deciduous) were targeted at each site. Litterfall traps were used to assess leaf damage caused by leaf‐chewing insects in 2014 and 2015. Using a standardized protocol, we assessed herbivory on 117,918 leaves of 39 dominant tree species. Preliminary analyses suggest that insect herbivory increases with increasing latitude for deciduous broadleaf species. In particular, oak (Quercus crispula) and beech (Fagus crenata) were subject to increased insect herbivory with increasing latitude. In contrast, insect herbivory decreased with increasing latitude in evergreen broadleaf species. The latitudinal gradient of herbivory differed according to leaf type (i.e., evergreen or deciduous). This dataset offers excellent opportunities for meta‐analysis and comparative studies of herbivory among various forest types. Abstract

Premise: Understanding the flower visitation history of individual pollinators is key in the study of pollination networks, but direct tracking is labor intensive and, more important, does not capture information about the previous interactions of an individual. Therefore, a protocol to detect most of the pollen species on the body surfaces of an individual pollinator could elucidate its flower visitation history. Methods and Results: Under a microscope, we observed 6.0‐µL droplets from a sample solution (1.0 or 3.0 mL) containing pollen grains collected from individuals of six major pollinator functional groups. To clarify how many droplets need to be observed to detect all pollen species within the solution, we examined up to 10 droplets collected from each individual insect. Sample‐based rarefaction curve analyses of the data showed that we could detect ~90% of the pollen species and the plant–pollinator links in the networks by observing six droplets. Conclusions: The rarefaction curve analysis for pollen‐on‐pollinator studies is a useful preliminary step for minimizing the time and labor required while maximizing the data on the flower visitation history of each individual pollinator and revealing any hidden flower–pollinator interactions. Abstract

Detection of pine wood nematode, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus, is fundamental for effective control of pine wilt disease. Recent molecular techniques, such as DNA detection, have enhanced detectability of the nematodes whereas appropriate field sampling has received less attention. In order to elucidate a sampling design that most efficiently detects B. xylophilus using a commercially-distributed DNA detection kit, we compared detection levels of B. xylophilus using wood chips taken from various positions on dead trees. Results showed that the DNA kit had a higher detection level than the conventional method, and that trunk samples had higher levels than branch samples. Statistical model revealed that among-tree variation influenced the detectability more strongly than within-tree variation. Our results suggest that, in practice, with limited resources for control, it is more efficient to take samples from many trees with a minimum number from each tree, rather than taking many samples from a small number of trees. Abstract

There are growing needs to broaden and deepen our multi-faceted understanding of the ecosystems, and the networks of Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) can play significant roles in fostering and applying ecosystem studies at regional and global scales. The International LTER Network (ILTER) is organized as a global network of field research sites and scientists to address current ecological issues such as biodiversity loss and ecosystem degradation within a globally changing environment. The ILTER East Asia-Pacific Regional Network (ILTER-EAP) is one of the four constituent ILTER regional networks. Since 1995, ILTER-EAP has been developed to promote data sharing, research collaborations and capability building in the science and to bridge gaps between societal needs and scientific imperatives on concerns in the Asia-Pacific Region. Currently, ILTER-EAP comprises nine formal ILTER members and two associate networks. Their activities involve long-term and multiple-site observations of structural, functional and developmental aspects of ecosystems, data sharing, and bridging society and ecological science. This paper presents a review of the activities of ILTER-EAP, focusing on its: (1) vision and the development following its inception, (2) scientific activities and major outputs related to selected thematic areas, (3) contributions from ILTER-EAP to the international initiatives, and (4) future challenges and opportunities relating to its development and role in facilitating regional and global research collaborations. Accordingly, regional research questions were identified that could be most effectively addressed by opening up a common research platform, integrated data management system and the network science, which is open to all interested parties. Abstract

Riparian forests and adjacent upland forests often exhibit differences in composition and diversity. This variation should be due in part to difference in site condition and in part to difference in disturbance regime. To understand relative roles of these differences, structure, composition and diversity were compared between a riparian forest and an adjacent terrace forest through analyzing topography-specific guild structure referring to disturbance regime in an old-growth temperate deciduous forest in northern Japan.The study plot (4.71 ha) was topographically divided into four units: a riparian area (RP) and a terrace (TR) as major parts, and a colluvial slope (CS) and a denuded slope (DS) as minor parts. The riparian area included various microsites, such as an active channel, and lower and higher floodplains, which have been formed by multiple types of natural disturbances: flooding, debris flow and tree-fall. In contrast, in the terrace, only tree-falls were the prevailing disturbance and homogeneous site conditions (a gentle slope and deep organic soil) developed. In the riparian area, a species-rich stand with higher diversity indices (e.g. equitability), mainly composed of Cercidiphyllum japonicum, Aesculus turbinata and Pterocarya rhoifolia, developed. In contrast, the terrace stand was dominated by a single species, Fagus crenata, and showed lower species richness and diversity. Three topography-specific guilds (RP-type, nine species; TR-type, 11 species; DS-type, three species) and one guild of generalist (five species) were found. Other 13 species were infrequent. The higher species richness and equitability in the riparian stands were attributed to the facts that the riparian stands include many species of non-riparian-specific guilds and many infrequent species as well as RP-type species, and that the terrace stand, in contrast, were mainly composed of TR-type species and a few generalists. In the riparian area, heterogeneous site condition created by multiple disturbance regimes allowed species with different niche to coexist. In addition, there was some evidence in the riparian area that the geomorphic processes with infrequent and large-scale disturbances formed mosaics of various successional stages, suggesting a non-equilibrium species coexistence in the riparian community. Abstract

Litter and soil organic matter decomposition represents one of the major drivers of carbon and nutrient cycling in a given ecosystem; however, it also contributes to a significant production of relevant greenhouse gasses. The Japanese archipelago spans several biomes (boreal‐temperate‐subtropical) and covers a large range of elevations and ecosystem types. Hence, the comprehension of this fundamental biogeochemical process in diverse ecosystems is crucial to maintain their ecosystem services. In this article, we have provided data on plant leaf decomposition from 33 research sites across Japan. At each site, standard litter material with different decomposition rates, rooibos tea and green tea were incubated for 90 days between 2012 and 2016 and the remaining mass was recorded. In total, 1904 bags were used. In addition, supplementary measurements of environmental variables essential for the interpretation of the collected data, such as soil and vegetation, were recorded. Plot‐level averages of the remaining mass rates of bag contents after incubation ranged 0.17–0.51 for green tea and 0.54–0.82 for rooibos tea. Continued monitoring will also provide important insights into the temporal dynamics of litter decomposition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This data paper reports litter fall data collected in a network of 21 forest sites in Japan. This is the largest litter fall data set freely available in Japan to date. The network is a part of the Monitoring Sites 1000 Project launched by the Ministry of the Environment, Japan. It covers subarctic to subtropical climate zones and the four major forest types in Japan. Twenty-three permanent plots in which usually 25 litter traps were installed were established in old-growth or secondary natural forests. Litter falls were collected monthly from 2004, and sorted into leaves, branches, reproductive structures and miscellaneous. The data provide seasonal patterns and inter-annual dynamics of litter falls, and their geographical patterns, and offer good opportunities for meta-analyses and comparative studies among forests. This data paper reports tree census data collected in a network of 34 forest sites in Japan. This is the largest forest data set freely available in Japan to date. The network is a part of the Monitoring Sites 1000 Project launched by the Ministry of the Environment, Japan. It covers subarctic to subtropical climate zones and the four major forest types in Japan. Forty-two permanent plots, usually 1 ha in size, were established in old-growth or secondary natural forests. Censuses of woody species ≥15 cm girth at breast height were conducted every year or once during 2004 to 2009. The data provide species abundance, survivorship and stem girth growth of 52,534 individuals of 334 tree and liana species. The censuses adopted common census protocol, which provide good opportunities for meta-analyses and comparative studies among forests.
