The article aims to present the stages of the LEADER programme and its influence on greater activity and integration of inhabitants by, e.g. extending the knowledge of tradition and national heritage and the actions intended for the integration of local communities. It is noticeable particularly in the implementation of the activities within Axis 4 of the 2007–2013 Rural Development Programme. Positive changes in rural areas are a result of building strong social and human capitals, which are important factors of local development. The skills and the ability for cooperation of a local community allows it to implement many projects. The investments made by beneficiaries of the LEADER programme improve the level of living and the quality of life in the countryside. The effect is an improvement in physical infrastructure and tourist attractiveness as a result of care for the rural landscape and cultural heritage. The implementation of the LEADER programme is presented on the example of Wielkopolskie Voivodeship where the participation in actions for local communities is deeply ingrained. In order to show spatial differences in the activity of local entities under Local Action Groups in Wielkopolskie Voivodeship, classes were selected on the basis of funds received by local entities in the LAG areas. There are 36 Local Action Groups operating in Wielkopolska (of which 31 have seats in this region).

We investigated whether hypothermia and hyperthermia can alter the efficacy and potency of histamine at increasing the force of cardiac contractions in mice that overexpress the human H2 receptor only in their cardiac myocytes (labelled H2-TG). Contractile studies were performed in an organ bath on isolated, electrically driven (1 Hz) left atrial preparations and spontaneously beating right atrial preparations from H2-TG mice and wild-type (WT) littermate control mice. The basal beating rate in the right atrial preparations from H2-TG mice was lowered by hypothermia (23 °C) and elevated by hyperthermia (42 °C). Furthermore, the efficacy of histamine (0.01–100 µM) at exerting positive inotropic effects was more severely attenuated in the left and right H2-TG mouse atria under hypothermia and hyperthermia than under normothermia (37 °C). Similarly, the inotropic response to histamine was attenuated under hypothermia and hyperthermia in isolated electrically stimulated (1 Hz) right atrial preparations obtained from humans undergoing cardiac surgery. The phosphorylation state of phospholamban at serine 16 at 23 °C was inferior to that at 37 °C in left atrial preparations from H2-TG mice in the presence of 10 µM histamine. In contrast, in human atrial preparations, the phosphorylation state of phospholamban at serine 16 in the presence of 100 µM histamine was lower at 42 °C than at 37 °C. Finally, under hyperthermia, we recorded more and longer lasting arrhythmias in right atrial preparations from H2-TG mice than in those from WT mice. We conclude that the inotropic effects of histamine in H2-TG mice and in human atrial preparations, as well as the chronotropic effects of histamine in H2-TG mice, are temperature dependent. Furthermore, we observed that, even without stimulation of the H2 receptors by exogenous agonists, temperature elevation can increase arrhythmias in isolated right atrial preparations from H2-TG mice. HIPP Indy is a collaborative effort between the Indiana Department of Correction, the Peace Learning Center, and program facilitators in pursuit of implementing curriculum in peace education, conflict resolution, and self-efficacy with incarcerated, juvenile girls. The Center for Urban and Multicultural Education embarked on a program to partner a reservice teaching candidate with an urban social justice initiative in the hopes of reciprocal benefits for all involved. This study represents both qualitative data from multiple partners in designing and implementing the project, as well as the reflections of the participant-observer and co-author. The authors purport that listening to the stories of the diverse individuals involved in making the program possible offers an opportunity to understand curriculum in-the-making and the complexity of collaborative work. Revealed in this collaboration are new insights into the complexities of working with incarcerated students, attempts at creating a dialogic curriculum, and the ways in which academic discourse (i.e. Freirean praxis) gets translated into practical community-based, social justice work.

Objective: Sleep disturbances are common in major depressive disorder (MDD), although polysomnographic (PSG) abnormalities are more prevalent in adults than in children and adolescents with MDD. Sleep spindle activity (SPA) is associated with neuroplasticity mechanisms during brain maturation and is more abundant in childhood and adolescence than in adulthood, and as such, may be a more sensitive measure of sleep alteration than PSG in early-onset depression. This study investigated SPA changes related to early-onset MDD, comparing individuals already ill with MDD and individuals at high-risk for MDD with healthy nondepressed controls. Method: The study included 63 participants (8 to 15 years of age): 21 currently depressed individuals, 21 individuals at high risk for MDD based on positive family history of MDD, and 21 healthy control individuals with no personal or family history of psychiatric illness. All participants maintained a regular sleep/wake schedule for 5 days, followed by 2 nights in the laboratory. SPA was analyzed in Stage 2 of non-rapid eye movement sleep. Results: SPA differed significantly between groups, particularly in the late part of the night (F[subscript 2,62] = 7.3, p = 0.001). Although the difference was greatest between the MDD and healthy control groups, both the MDD (p = 0.0004) and at high-risk groups (p = 0.02) had significantly lower SPA compared with healthy controls. SPA deficit was more prominent in females than in males (F[subscript 5,62] = 5.19, p = 0.005). Conclusions: Low SPA characterizes youths with MDD and those at high risk for MDD, particularly girls, suggesting that early-onset depression and risk for the MDD are associated with decreased neuroplasticity. The determinants of large-scale conflict have been examined extensively in the academic literature. The factors contributing to everyday violence have received less attention despite this smaller-scale conflict having a high human and economic cost. We analyse a dataset at the level of 495 Indonesian districts to estimate the determinants of non-domestic, small-scale violence prevalent in this nation. We focus on the role of pronounced cultural heterogeneity that characterizes Indonesia and contribute to the literature by empirically testing whether established conflict theory holds for smaller scale violence data in the case of Indonesia. Ethnic polarization (rather than fractionalization) is the main driver of conflict intensity, suggesting that district-level conflicts are commonly over public goods. Cultural heterogeneity has a curvilinear effect on conflict. It increases the intensity of violence up to a point, after which the level decreases. Objective: To quantify circadian rhythms in rest-activity cycles in depressed children and adolescents. Method: Restactivity cycles were evaluated by actigraphy over five consecutive 24-hour periods in 100 children and adolescents, including 59 outpatients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and 41 healthy normal controls. Total activity, total light exposure, and time spent in light at more than 1,000 lux were averaged over the recording period for each participant. Time series analysis was used to determine the amplitude and period length of circadian rhythms in rest-activity. Results: Overall, adolescents with MDD had lower activity levels, damped circadian amplitude, and lower light exposure and spent less time in bright light than healthy controls. Among children, those with MDD showed lower light exposure and spent less time in bright light, but only depressed girls showed damped circadian amplitude. The sex differences were substantially greater in the MDD group than in the normal control group. Conclusions: These results confirm damped circadian rhythms in children and adolescents with MDD and highlight the influence of gender and age on these measures. J. Am. Acad. Child Adolesc.
