A critical shear rate was defined in milk fat globules in a model based on fluid-mechanics. A linear decrease in destabilization shear rate was predicted, together with a rise in fat volume concentration, and was confirmed in the experiment. Fat globule stability increased at decreasing temperatures.

Abstract Background To assess the feasibility and safety of a gelfoam torpedo plugging technique for embolization of the transsplenic access channel in adult patients following transvenous portal vein interventions. Materials and methods Between 09/2016 and 08/2021, an ultrasound guided transsplenic portalvenous access (TSPVA) was established in twenty-four adult patients with a 21-G needle and 4-F microsheath under ultrasound guidance. Afterwards, sheaths ranging from 4-F to 8-F were inserted as needed for the procedure. Following portal vein intervention, the splenic access tract was embolized with a gelfoam-based tract plugging (GFTP) technique. TSPVA and GFTP were performed twice in two patients. Patients’ pre-interventional and procedural characteristics were analyzed to assess the feasibility and safety of the plugging technique according Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiological Society of Europe (CIRSE) classification system. The aim of this study was to investigate the production of protein-rich powders from liberated proteins of the heterotrophically cultivated microalgae Chlorella protothecoides by means of precipitation, lyophilization, and solvent extraction, and assess the characteristics of the obtained materials. First, microalgae dispersions (10 g/100 g) were passed up to 12 times through a high-pressure homogenizer at different pressure levels. Second, the cells were centrifuged (20,000 g , 30 min, 25 °C) to obtain soluble- and insoluble-protein fractions. Lastly, three approaches were used to obtain protein-rich powders from both fractions: (a) solvent precipitation, (b) lyophilization, and (c) solvent extraction. Results showed that cells of Chlorella protothecoides could be disrupted by high pressure homogenization, e.g. 6 passes at 150 MPa led to 99.9% cells being disrupted. For protein precipitation, solvent polarity affected precipitation efficiency in terms of protein and pigment content of the obtained powders. Precipitation with an ethanol:acetone (1:1 v /v) mixture resulted in overall high protein contents in the obtained powders of 46.3 ± 0.1 g/100 g from soluble fractions and 67.2 ± 1.0 g/100 g from insoluble fractions. Solvent extraction of lyophilized powders had only slight effects on protein and pigment content but lyophilized powders itself had a protein content of 39.1 ± 0.5 g/100 g (soluble powder) and 58.5 ± 0.5 g/100 g (insoluble powder). The EC funded CyClaDes research project is designed to promote the increased impact of the human element in shipping across the design and operational lifecycle of ships. It addresses the design and operation of ships and ship systems. One of the CyClaDes- tasks is to create a crew-centered design case-study examination of the information that is shared between the Bridge and Engine Control Room (ECR) that helps the crew coordinate to ensure understanding and complete interconnected tasks. This information can be provided in various ways, including communication devices or obtained from a common database, display, or even the ship environment (e.g., the roll of the ship). A series of semi-structured interviews were conducted with seafarers of diverse ranks to get a better idea of what communication does, or should, take place and any problems or challenges existing in current operations and interdepartmental communications, as seen from both the bridge and ECR operators' perspectives. Included in the interview were both the standard communications and information shared during planning and executing a voyage, as well as special situations such as safety/casualty tasks or encountering heavy weather. The results were analyzed in terms of the goals of the communication, the primary situations of interest for communication and collaboration, the communication media used, the information shared, and the problems experienced. The seafarer interviews helped to explore on-board interdepartmental communication and the results are presented in the paper. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
