We measured the Coulomb dissociation of 16O into 4He and 12C within the FAIR Phase-0 program at GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung Darmstadt, Germany. From this we will extract the photon dissociation cross section 16O(α,γ)12C, which is the time reversed reaction to 12C(α,γ)16O. With this indirect method, we aim to improve on the accuracy of the experimental data at lower energies than measured so far. The expected low cross section for the Coulomb dissociation reaction and close magnetic rigidity of beam and fragments demand a high precision measurement. Hence, new detector systems were built and radical changes to the R3B setup were necessary to cope with the high-intensity 16O beam. All tracking detectors were designed to let the unreacted 16O ions pass, while detecting the 12C and 4He.

Neutron total cross sections are an important source of experimental data in the evaluation of neutron-induced cross sections. The sum of all neutron-induced reaction cross sections can be determined with a precision of a few per cent in a relative measurement. The neutron spectrum of the photoneutron source nELBE extends in the fast region from about 100 keV to 10 MeV and has favourable conditions for transmission measurements due to the low instantaneous flux of neutrons and low gamma-flash background. Several materials of interest (in part included in the CIELO evaluation or on the HPRL of OECD/NEA) have been investigated: 197Au [1, 2], natFe [2], natW [2], 238U, natPt, 4He, natO, natNe, natXe. For gaseous targets high pressure gas cells with flat end-caps have been built that hold up to 200 bar pressure. The experimental setup will be presented including results from several transmission experiments and the data analysis leading to the total cross sections will be discussed.

Low-background experiments with stable ion beams are an important tool for putting the model of stellar hydrogen, helium, and carbon burning on a solid experimental foundation. The pioneering work in this regard has been done by the LUNA collaboration at Gran Sasso, using a 0.4 MV accelerator. The present contribution reviews the status of the project for a higher-energy underground accelerator in Felsenkeller, Germany. Results from γ-ray, neutron, and muon background measurements in the Felsenkeller underground site in Dresden, Germany, show that the background conditions are satisfactory. Two tunnels of the Felsenkeller site have recently been refurbished for the installation of a 5MV high-current Pelletron accelerator. Civil construction work has completed in March 2018. The accelerator will provide intense, 50 μA, beams of 1H+, 4He+, and 12C+ ions, enabling research on astrophysically relevant nuclear reactions with unprecedented sensitivity.

Intelligent Quarters Hamburg – structural design of vibration decoupled high‐rised buidlings The joint venture between the ECE Projektmanagement GmbH and Strabag Real Estate GmbH has realized the project "Intelligent Quarters" which is located at the so‐called Elbtorquartier at the HafenCity in Hamburg. The building complex is located directly at the Elbe River and consists of four different buildings. During the design and installation, focus was set on the design of fully vibration decoupled high‐rised buidlings due to complex location directly above the new subway U4 in Hamburg. Results of finite element calculations and experiments showed that the use of vibration dampers leads to vibration decoupled structures at "Intelligent Quarters". [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article deals with an object which has hitherto been overlooked, but which was essential to Aby Warburg's work: the desk. While in a first step sources are collected from and about Warburg, which emphasize the significance of the desk for Warburg's work, a second step is taken to reconstruct a specific type of desk that was of great importance to Warburg. From the identification of this work table the thesis is derived that this table played a decisive role in the formation of the tableaus of the Mnemosyne Atlas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this account we give an overview of the synthesis and properties of heterocyclic [8]circulenes. Much of the interest in studying heterocyclic [8]circulenes stems from the planar cyclooctatetraene core often contained in these compounds, which in principle is antiaromatic. We start with a short introduction to the hydrocarbon [n]circulenes and proceed to describe the synthetic chemistry involved in creating tetraoxa[8]circulenes, with particular focus on the acid-mediated oligomerization of benzo- or naphthoquinones, resulting in some simple rules for predicting the outcome of the oligomerization reactions. These rules have guided the synthetic strategies for the preparation of azatrioxa[8]circulenes and diazadioxa[8]circulenes, which will be described in separate sections of this account. More traditional synthetic strategies have been applied in the preparation of octathia[8]circulene, tetrathiatetraselena[8]circulene, and a number of other heterocyclic [8]circulenes, and these synthetic efforts will be highlighted. Finally, a section describing structures that are closely related to the heterocyclic [8]circulenes will be presented, and at the end we will comment on the extensive theoretical work regarding the question of aromaticity/anti-aromaticity of the central cyclooctatetraene of heterocyclic[8]circulenes. In this paper we describe a new class of antiaromatic planar cyclooctatetraenes: the diazadioxa[8]circulenes. The synthesis was achieved by means of a new acid-mediated oxidative dimerization of 3,6-dihydroxycarbazoles to yield the diazadioxa[8]circulenes in high yields. The synthetic protocol appears to be general, and is a one-pot transformation in which two CC bonds and two CO bonds are formed with the loss of two molecules of water. We also present a detailed characterization of the optical and electrochemical properties of this new class of stable planar cyclooctatetraenes. The properties of the diazadioxa[8]circulenes are compared with the properties of isoelectronic tetraoxa[8]circulenes and azatrioxa[8]circulenes. We discuss the antiaromatic nature of the planar central cyclooctatetraene moiety. The antiaromatic nature of the planar cyclooctatetraenes was studied by using computational methods (NICS calculations), and these calculations reveal that the central eight-membered ring has antiaromatic character. We describe herein the first synthesis of a new class of anti-aromatic planar cyclooctatetraenes: the azatrioxa[8]circulenes. This was achieved by treating a suitably functionalised 3,6-dihydroxycarbazole with 1,4-benzoquinones or a 1,4-naphthoquinone. We fully characterised the azatrioxa[8]circulenes by using optical, electrochemical and computational techniques as well as by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. The results of a computational study (NICS) suggest that the central planar cyclooctatetraene is anti-aromatic when the molecules are in neutral or oxidised states (2+), and that the corresponding dianions are aromatic. We discuss the aromatic/anti-aromatic nature of the planar cyclooctatetraenes and compare them with the isoelectronic tetraoxa[8]circulenes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study used a naturalistic design to investigate the effectiveness of eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) with children and adolescents who were exposed to single-incident trauma. Participants were 36 children and adolescents ranging in age from 1 year 9 months to 18 years 1 month who were referred consecutively to the author's private practice. Assessments were conducted at intake, post-waitlist/pretreatment, and at follow up. EMDR treatment resulted in significant improvement (Cohen's d = 1.87). Follow-ups after 6 months revealed stable, further slight improvement. It was shown that children younger than 4 years of age can be treated using EMDR and that the group of preschool children had the same benefit from the treatment as the school-age children.
