In ihrer Theorie globaler Gerechtigkeit hat Iris Marion Young ein Modell von Verantwortung erarbeitet, das sich nicht vergangenheitsorientiert mit der Haftung Einzelner befasst, sondern mit der in sozialen Verbindungen geteilten Verantwortung, der es sich künftig zu stellen gelte. Dieses Modell hat allerdings einen Haken: Wenn diese Verantwortlichkeit schon aus dem Eingebundensein in soziale Strukturen erwächst, kann jede Einzelne sich damit aus der Affäre ziehen, dass sie zwar verantwortlich in, nicht aber für diese Strukturen ist. Wenn man den verschiedenen Verantwortungsmodellen unterschiedliche Pflichten zuordnet (der individuellen Haftungsverantwortung die Pflicht, vergangenes Unrecht wiedergutzumachen, und der geteilten Verantwortung die Pflicht, künftig gemeinsam hervorgerufenes Unrecht zu vermeiden), bleibt eine Frage offen: Gibt es eigentlich eine Pflicht, die geteilte (von außen zugeschriebene) Verantwortung auch zu übernehmen? Warum soll sich jemand verantwortlich erklären für die Effekte von Strukturen, die er sich gar nicht ausgesucht hat? An dieser Stelle bringt Thomas Nagels Idee politischer Verantwortung weiter: Nagel zufolge sind wir für politische Maßnahmen auch dann verantwortlich, wenn wir sie uns nicht im Einzelnen ausgesucht haben, solange sie in unserem Namen geschehen. Dieses Argument des liberalen Nationalismus lässt sich auf die globale politische Ökonomie übertragen: auch dort nämlich geschehen die meisten Dinge in unserem Namen. Da die Grammatik der „Verpflichtung“ in nationaler Politik und globaler politischer Ökonomie Parallelen aufweist, sollten wir auch in Letzterer unsere Verantwortung übernehmen.

Bacillus shaericus JG-A12 is a natural isolate recovered from a uranium mining waste pile near the own of Johanngeorgenstadt in Saxony, Germany. An investigation is presented to elucidate the nature of the chemical interactions between uranium and the surface layer and cells of Bacillus shaericus JG-A12 using spectroscopic and microscopic methods.

This paper discusses Philippe Van Parijs' book Real Freedom for All. It argues that the book was a cornerstorne of the debate on an unconditional basic income, but that it suffers from an internal contradiction nevertheless: On the one hand, it offers a perspective for a criticism of capitalism (based on the missing freedom not to work) which is very valuable after socialist alternatives have lost all credibility. On the other hand, it aims to defend („justify“) the same capitalism against its critics. Due to this theoretical double-bind, the book is forced to both prettify capitalism and to cover up the potential costs an unconditional basic income would have. It is argued that both effects do not strengthen, but rather weaken the case for an unconditional basic income. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article reviews George Sher's perfectionism as anthropology by re-reading his book "Beyond Neutrality." It states that Sher shared anti-subjectivity tendency when it comes to values as he contended that perfectionism must argue against selective skepticism that is inherent in subjectivist theories of values. The article concludes that Sher was right in stressing individualist element in perfection but erred in belittling his own normative naturalism in questions of epistemology and value.

The paper argues that Dewey's ethics is based on a naturalistic theory of value. This unusual interpretation questions the anti-naturalist reading of Dewey in the wake of Richard Rorty and other neo-pragmatists. In order to defend this interpretation, I develop a genealogy of Dewey's pragmatic naturalism: It has a 'father' in the progressivist movement, and a 'sister' in the Chicago Sociology. A closer look at Frank L. Ward, Albion Small, W.I. Thomas and Robert Park helps to reconstruct the political dynamics of the progressivist programme of naturalistic values. This contextualization may also correct some of the shortcomings of Dewey's own version: Some pragmatic sociologists spelled out the noncomformist individualism more clearly than Dewey's philosophy did. This comment on Kocyba's article discusses both his economic and moral assumptions, arguing that the shift from industrial capitalism towards a 'new spirit' of more autonomous forms of work is not captured by Kocyba's comparison between producing things alone and creating services together. Consequently, the main problem is not, as Kocyba believes, the determination of an individual's share in the (intangible) product, but the competitive mindset of this new spirit, which has many undesired consequences. Concerning the 'moral presuppositions' it is argued that the questionable self-restriction to 'immanent norms' induces a strong affirmative tendency which is at odds with Kocyba's critical aspirations. The idea that critical theory can only refer to norms which are already institutionalized needs to be dropped in order to revive the critical dimension. The article responds to a preceding article by Ulrike Davy on social inequality and European constitutional law. The author stresses the importance of democracy in a society moving toward egalitarianism and, in a time of evolving values, for having easily retractable laws. Sociology itself is seen as an enlightening instrument for building political will and educating toward implementation of social ideals.

Recent welfare reform has resulted in new work requirements for welfare recipients. These measures need to be justified, as they impair recipients' freedom. This paper first repudiates economic justifications for these developments and argues that the dominant justification is perfectionist. But unlike workfare, perfectionism is not necessarily paternalistic. The second part of the paper outlines a liberal perfectionism which allows only for autonomy-enhancing politics. Though even such autonomy-enhancing politics cannot be made obligatory. The last section concludes that workfare's paternalism cannot be attributed to perfectionist justifications, but rather stems from the narrow philosophy of work that is applied. The idea that enforced wage labour is a reliable tool for inducing autonomy is refuted. In the end, workfare needs to be rejected, as it is based on assumptions that are mistaken both normatively and empirically. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
