Abstract

BACKGROUND: Neuromodulation is a therapeutic option to improve limb salvage in end-stage peripheral arterial disease (PAD), but there is no consensus on its indication for spinal cord stimulation (SCS) in PAD patients. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to present the outcome of end-stage PAD patients treated with SCS. METHODS: This study is a retrospective analysis based on a local prospective registry. Neuromodulation was performed if there was: 1) no revascularisation option, 2) no septicemia, 3) and Rutherford stage 4–6. The primary endpoint of the study was limb salvage. Secondary endpoints were reduction in pain or simply pain reduction pain (assessed using a visual anlog scale/VAS) and improvement in walking distance. RESULTS: Limb salvage was reached in 30/34 patients (88%). 19. Orientation illusions and heart-rate changes during short-radius centrifugation

Abstract

Intermittent short-radius centrifugation is a promising countermeasure against the adverse effects of prolonged weightlessness. To assess the feasibility of this countermeasure, we need to understand the disturbing sensory effects that accompany some movements carried out during rotation. We tested 20 subjects who executed yaw and pitch head movements while rotating at constant angular velocity. They were supine with their main body axis perpendicular to earth gravity. The head was placed at the centrifuge's axis of rotation. Head movements produced a transient elevation of heart-rate. All observers reported head-contingent sensations of body tilt although their bodies remained supine. Mostly, the subjective sensations conform to a model based on semicircular canal responses to angular acceleration. However, some surprising deviations from the model were found. Also, large inter-individual differences in direction, magnitude, and quality of the illusory body tilt were observed. The results have implications for subject screening and prediction of subjective tolerance for centrifugation.

Abstract

Extended objects presented instantaneously appeared to propagate or grow into their final shape. A strong bias was found toward perceiving straight lines to grow away from the observer's point of fixation. If attention and fixation were not directed to the same point of the visual field, both influenced illusory motion directionality, and if another small object was present on the screen at a location that was neither fixated nor attended to, the object that was instantaneously presented seemed to grow away from this point. Thus, three factors are involved in illusory-motion directionality: biases toward perceiving objects spreading away from the fixation point, away from an attended area, and away from preexisting objects. The experiments indicate that a satisfactory explanation of the illusion has to include bottom-up and top-down processes. They also challenge existing theories of motion detection.

Absorption spectra of polycrystalline samples of LiUF6, α-NaUF6, and CsUF6 have been recorded at 4, 77, and 298 K. This group of compounds has a common sixfold U–F coordination that approaches an octahedral site symmetry for LiUF6 but exhibits increasing trigonal distortion (D3d symmetry) along the indicated series. Spectra have been systematically interpreted as consisting of sequences of vibronic transitions coupled to well-defined electronic excited states. Crystal-field calculations have been performed. 40. The Auditory Kuleshov Effect: Multisensory Integration in Movie Editing.

Abstract

Almost a hundred years ago, the Russian filmmaker Lev Kuleshov conducted his now famous editing experiment in which different objects were added to a given film scene featuring a neutral face. It is said that the audience interpreted the unchanged facial expression as a function of the added object (e.g., an added soup made the face express hunger). This interaction effect has been dubbed “Kuleshov effect.” In the current study, we explored the role of sound in the evaluation of facial expressions in films. Thirty participants watched different clips of faces that were intercut with neutral scenes, featuring either happy music, sad music, or no music at all. This was crossed with the facial expressions of happy, sad, or neutral. We found that the music significantly influenced participants’ emotional judgments of facial expression. Thus, the intersensory effects of music are more specific than previously thought. They alter the evaluation of film scenes and can give meaning to ambiguous situations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
