Abstract The geometry of 4-string contact interaction of closed string field theory is characterized using machine learning. We obtain Strebel quadratic differentials on 4-punctured spheres as a neural network by performing unsupervised learning with a custom-built loss function. This allows us to solve for local coordinates and compute their associated mapping radii numerically. We also train a neural network distinguishing vertex from Feynman region. As a check, 4-tachyon contact term in the tachyon potential is computed and a good agreement with the results in the literature is observed. We argue that our algorithm is manifestly independent of number of punctures and scaling it to characterize the geometry of n-string contact interaction is feasible.

Abstract We compute the gravitational action of a free massive Majorana fermion coupled to two-dimensional gravity on compact Riemann surfaces of arbitrary genus. The structure is similar to the case of the massive scalar. The small-mass expansion of the gravitational yields the Liouville action at zeroth order, and we can identify the Mabuchi action at first order. While the massive Majorana action is a conformal deformation of the massless Majorana CFT, we find an action different from the one given by the David-Distler-Kawai (DDK) ansatz.

Witten's open string field theory with a generalized version of stubs is reformulated as a cubic string field theory using an auxiliary string field. The gauge symmetries and equations of motion as well as the associative algebra of the resulting theory are investigated. Integrating out either the original or auxiliary field is shown to recover the conventional cubic theory. Our analysis demonstrates that deformations due to the stubs can be described as a homotopy transfer purely in the context of strong deformation retract. We also discuss to what extent the vertex regions resulting from stubs provide a model for the elementary interactions of closed string field theory.

Abstract In its traditional form, the string field in closed string field theory is constrained by the level-matching condition, which is imposed beside the action. By analogy with the similar problem for the Ramond sector, it was understood by Okawa and Sakaguchi how to lift this condition and work with unconstrained field by introducing spurious free fields. These authors also pointed out that new backgrounds may exist thanks to a new gauge field which is trivial on flat space, but can generate fluxes on a toroidal background. In this paper, we perform a complete study of the free theory at the tachyonic and massless levels with the aim of setting the stage for studying backgrounds without level-matching.

Abstract We consider a nonlocal scalar field theory inspired by the tachyon action in open string field theory. The Lorentz-covariant action is characterized by a parameter ξ 2 that quantifies the amount of nonlocality. Restricting to purely time-dependent configurations, we show that a field redefinition perturbative in ξ 2 reduces the action to a local two-derivative theory with a ξ 2-dependent potential. This picture is supported by evidence that the redefinition maps the wildly oscillating rolling tachyon solutions of the nonlocal theory to conventional rolling in the new scalar potential. For general field configurations we exhibit an obstruction to a local Lorentz-covariant formulation, but we can still achieve a formulation local in time, as well as a light-cone formulation. These constructions provide an initial value formulation and a Hamiltonian. Their causality is consistent with a lack of superluminal behavior in the nonlocal theory.

Abstract We work out the effective gravitational action for 2D massive Euclidean fermions in a small mass expansion. Besides the leading Liouville action, the order m 2 gravitational action contains a piece characteristic of the Mabuchi action, much as for 2D massive scalars, but also several non-local terms involving the Green’s functions and Green’s functions at coinciding points on the manifold.

Abstract We compute the Hermitian sector of the relative BRST cohomology of the spacelike and timelike Liouville theories with generic real central charge c L in each case, coupled to a spacelike Coulomb gas and a generic transverse CFT. This paper is a companion of [1], and its main goal is to completely characterize the cohomology of the timelike theory with c L ≤ 1 which was defined there. We also apply our formulas to revisit the BRST cohomology of the spacelike Liouville theory with c L > 1, which includes generalized minimal gravity. We prove a no-ghost theorem for the Hermitian sector in the timelike theory and for some spacelike models.

Abstract We consider the algebraic couplings in the tree level effective action of the heterotic string. We show how these couplings can be computed from closed string field theory. When the light fields we are interested in are charged under an underlying N $$ \mathcal{N} $$ = 2 R-charge in the left-moving sector, their quartic effective potential localizes at the boundary of the worldsheet moduli space, in complete analogy to the previously studied open string case. In particular we are able to compute the quartic closed string field theory potential without resorting to any explicit expression for the 3- and the 4-strings vertices but only using the L ∞ relations between them. As a non trivial example we show how the heterotic Yang-Mills quartic potential arises in this way.

Abstract A proper definition of the path integral of quantum gravity has been a long- standing puzzle because the Weyl factor of the Euclidean metric has a wrong-sign kinetic term. We propose a definition of two-dimensional Liouville quantum gravity with cos- mological constant using conformal bootstrap for the timelike Liouville theory coupled to supercritical matter. We prove a no-ghost theorem for the states in the BRST cohomology. We show that the four-point function constructed by gluing the timelike Liouville three- point functions is well defined and crossing symmetric (numerically) for external Liouville energies corresponding to all physical states in the BRST cohomology with the choice of the Ribault-Santachiara contour for the internal energy.

Abstract We show that the two-point tree level amplitude in string theory in flat space is given by the standard free particle expression.

Abstract Bros, Epstein and Glaser proved crossing symmetry of the S-matrix of a theory without massless fields by using certain analyticity properties of the off-shell momentum space Green’s function in the complex momentum plane. The latter properties follow from representing the momentum space Green’s function as Fourier transform of the position space Green’s function, satisfying certain properties implied by the underlying local quantum field theory. We prove the same analyticity properties of the momentum space Green’s functions in superstring field theory by directly working with the momentum space Feynman rules even though the corresponding properties of the position space Green’s function are not known. Our result is valid to all orders in perturbation theory, but requires, as usual, explicitly subtracting / regulating the non-analyticities associated with massless particles. These results can also be used to prove other general analyticity properties of the S-matrix of superstring theory.

We initiate a way of generating effective field theories (EFT) models by the computer, satisfying both experimental and theoretical constraints. We use Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN) and display generated instances which go beyond the examples known to the machine during training. As a starting point, we apply this idea to the generation of supersymmetric field theories with a single field. We find cases where the number of minima in the generated scalar potential is different from values found in the training data. We comment on potential further applications of this framework.

Abstract Gravitational domain wall solutions in gauged supergravity are often constructed within truncations that do not include vectors. As a consequence the gauge group is only a global symmetry of this truncation. The consistency of the truncation requires the restriction to solutions with vanishing Noether charge under this global symmetry, since otherwise vector fields are sourced. We show that this has interesting consequences for the orbit structure of the solutions under the global symmetries. We investigate this for CSO(p, q, r)-gaugings in various dimensions with scalar fields truncated to the S L n ℝ / SO n $$ \mathrm{S}\mathrm{L}\left(n,\mathbb{R}\right)/\mathrm{SO}(n) $$ subcoset. We prove that the seed solution — which generates all other solutions using only global transformations — has a diagonal coset matrix. This means that there exists a transformation at the boundary of the geometry that diagonalises the coset matrix and that this same transformation also diagonalises the whole flow as a consequence of the vanishing charge.

It was recently shown that other functionals contribute to the effective action for the Liouville field when considering massive matter coupled to two-dimensional gravity in the conformal gauge. The most important of these new contributions corresponds to the Mabuchi functional. We propose a minisuperspace action that reproduces the main features of the Mabuchi action in order to describe the dynamics of the zero-mode. We show that the associated Hamiltonian coincides with the (quantum mechanical) Liouville Hamiltonian. As a consequence the Liouville theory and our model of the Mabuchi theory both share the same spectrum, eigenfunctions and – in this approximation – correlation functions.

Vacuum fluctuations of quantum fields between physical objects depend on the shapes, positions, and internal composition of the latter. For objects of arbitrary shapes, even made from idealized materials, the calculation of the associated zero-point (Casimir) energy is an analytically intractable challenge. We propose a different numerical approach to this problem based on machine-learning techniques and illustrate the effectiveness of the method in a (2+1)-dimensional scalar field theory. The Casimir energy is first calculated numerically using a Monte Carlo algorithm for a set of the Dirichlet boundaries of various shapes. Then, a neural network is trained to compute this energy given the Dirichlet domain, treating the latter as black-and-white pixelated images. We show that after the learning phase, the neural network is able to quickly predict the Casimir energy for new boundaries of general shapes with reasonable accuracy.

In this review we present the most general form of the Janis–Newman algorithm. This extension allows generating configurations which contain all bosonic fields with spin less than or equal to two (real and complex scalar fields, gauge fields, metric field) and with five of the six parameters of the Plebański–Demiański metric (mass, electric charge, magnetic charge, NUT charge and angular momentum). Several examples are included to illustrate the algorithm. We also discuss the extension of the algorithm to other dimensions.

It was shown recently that, beside the traditional Liouville action, other functionals appear in the gravitational action of two-dimensional quantum gravity in the conformal gauge, the most important one being the Mabuchi functional. In a letter we proposed a minisuperspace action for this theory and used it to perform its canonical quantization. We found that the Hamiltonian of the Mabuchi theory is equal to the one of the Liouville theory and thus that the spectrum and correlation functions match in this approximation. The Janis–Newman algorithm has been shown to be successful in finding new stationary solutions of four-dimensional gravity. Attempts for a generalization to higher dimensions have already been found for the restricted cases with only one angular momentum. In this paper we propose an extension of this algorithm to five-dimensions with two angular momenta—using the prescription of Giampieri—through two specific examples, that are the Myers–Perry and BMPV black holes. We also discuss possible enlargements of our prescriptions to other dimensions and maximal number of angular momenta, and show how dimensions higher than six appear to be much more challenging to treat within this framework. Nonetheless this general algorithm provides a unification of the formulation in of the Janis–Newman algorithm, from which several examples are exposed, including the BTZ black hole. The Demiański–Janis–Newman (DJN) algorithm is an original solution generating technique. For a long time it has been limited to producing rotating solutions, restricted to the case of a metric and real scalar fields, despite the fact that Demiański extended it to include more parameters such as a NUT charge. Recently two independent prescriptions have been given for extending the algorithm to gauge fields and thus electrically charged configurations. In this paper we aim to end setting up the algorithm by providing a missing but important piece, which is how the transformation is applied to complex scalar fields. We illustrate our proposal through several examples taken from N = 2 supergravity, including the stationary BPS solutions from Behrndt et al and Senʼs axion–dilaton rotating black hole. Moreover we discuss solutions that include pairs of complex parameters, such as the mass and the NUT charge, or the electric and magnetic charges, and we explain how to perform the algorithm in this context (with the example of Kerr–Newman–Taub–NUT and dyonic Kerr–Newman black holes). The final formulation of the DJN algorithm can possibly handle solutions with five of the six Plebański–Demiański parameters along with any type of bosonic fields with spin less than two (exemplified with the stationary Israel–Wilson–Perjes solutions).
