Abstract

In this essay, Hamilton responds to criticisms of his book "The Art of Theater" (Malden, MA: Blackwell, 2007). Acknowledging that he expected that the central proposals in "The Art of Theater" would seem a little strange to philosophers, he reiterates his belief that the three general facts of any theatrical performance are its presentation, its preparation, and its reception; and questions why philosophers involved in performing arts to do not hold this view. "The Art of Theater" was designed to precipitate that discussion, and judging by the quality of the discussion contained in this issue of "Journal of Aesthetic Education," in has succeeded admirably in meeting that goal. Abstract

In "The Art of Theater," the author proposes and explains a claim that many theater people hold true in some form but have defended in a manner that has had almost no success outside discussions among themselves. The claim proposed is that, in an unqualified way, theater is a form of art. By that the author means theatrical performances are "what are created" in the practice of theater and that theatrical performances are "works of art" because they can be picked out and appreciated in the same ways one appreciates other kinds of artworks. 37. Long-Term, Non-Computer, Communication Simulations as Course Integration Activities

Abstract

This article offers a few guidelines for constructing effective simulations. It presents a sample class activity called simulated public hearing which aims to integrate the various elements of a public speaking course into a more comprehensive whole. Properly designed, simulated hearings have elements of persuasive, informative, and impromptu speaking, debate, communication ethics, group dynamics, problem-solving, interviewing, and research methods. Unlike virtual computer simulations, these simulations require real resources, institutions, and people. This is a plus, since no computer simulation can plan for all interactive eventualities. In addition, student perceptions of realism and the extent to which they feel they have learned are strongly related.

38. Elementary and Middle Schools Technical Assistance Center: An Approach to Support the Effective Implementation of Scientifically Based Practices in Special Education

Abstract

The Elementary and Middle Schools Technical Assistance Center (EMSTAC) tested an insider-outsider approach to assist local school districts in effectively identifying and implementing scientifically based practices. Methods used to measure EMSTAC's effectiveness in supporting successful practice adoption are presented. The overarching finding is that EMSTAC-assisted districts learned to work through a systematic process for changing and improving their instructional programs over time. Further, although differences in EMSTAC financial support for districts were substantial only nonfinancial factors, such as district leadership, were found to significantly influence the change process. Also discussed are the implications and limitations of these findings for improving instructional practices in special education. (Contains 3 tables.)

Abstract

Neighborhood socioeconomic deprivation may have important implications on disparities in liver transplant (LT) evaluation. In this retrospective cohort study, we constructed a novel dataset by linking individual patient‐level data with the highly granular Area Deprivation Index (ADI), which is advantageous over other neighborhood measures due to: specificity of Census Block‐Group (versus Census Tract, Zip code), scoring, and robust variables. Our cohort included 1377 adults referred to our center for LT evaluation 8/1/2016‐12/31/2019. Using modified Poisson regression, we tested for effect measure modification of the association between neighborhood socioeconomic status (nSES) and LT evaluation outcomes (listing, initiating evaluation, and death) by race and ethnicity. Compared to patients with high nSES, those with low nSES were at higher risk of not being listed (aRR = 1.14; 95%CI 1.05–1.22; p <.001), of not initiating evaluation post‐referral (aRR = 1.20; 95%CI 1.01–1.42; p =.03) and of dying without initiating evaluation (aRR = 1.55; 95%CI 1.09–2.2; p =.01). While White patients with low nSES had similar rates of listing compared to White patients with high nSES (aRR = 1.06; 95%CI.96–1.17; p =.25), Underrepresented patients from neighborhoods with low nSES incurred 31% higher risk of not being listed compared to Underrepresented patients from neighborhoods with high nSES (aRR = 1.31; 95%CI 1.12–1.5; p <.001). Interventions addressing neighborhood deprivation may not only benefit patients with low nSES but may address racial and ethnic inequities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

48. Preoperative Liver Stiffness is Associated With Hospital Length of Stay After Cardiac Surgery.

Abstract

Risk assessment models for cardiac surgery do not account for the degrees of liver dysfunction. Ultrasound shear-wave elastography measures liver stiffness (LSM), a quantitative measurement related to fibrosis, congestion, and inflammation. The authors hypothesized that preoperative liver stiffness would be associated with hospital length of stay after cardiac surgery. Prospective observational study. University hospital, single center. One hundred five adult patients undergoing nonemergent cardiac surgery. Preoperative liver stiffness measured by ultrasound elastography. The associations were analyzed using linear mixed models, with adjustments for preoperative variables, duration of cardiopulmonary bypass, and type of surgery. Median liver stiffness was 6.4 kPa (range, 4.1-18.6 kPa). The median length of hospital stay was 6 days (range, 3-18 d). Each unit increase in liver stiffness, treated as a continuous variable, was associated with an increase of 0.32 ± 0.10 days in the hospital (p = 0.002). When treated as a categorical variable (<6 kPa, 6-9.4 kPa, and ≥9.5 kPa), LSM ≥9.5 kPa v LSM <6 kPa was associated strongly with an increase in hospital length of stay of 3.25 ± 0.87 days (p = 0.0003). A preoperative LSM ≥9.5 kPa was associated with a significantly longer postoperative hospital length of stay. This association appeared independent of preoperative comorbidities commonly associated with coronary disease.
