Introduction: Kidney renal clear cell carcinoma (KIRC), as a main type of malignant kidney cancers, has a poor prognosis. Epithelial-mesenchymal transformation (EMT) exerts indispensable role in tumor progression and metastasis, including in KIRC. This study aimed to mine more EMT related details and build prognostic signature for KIRC.Methods: The KIRC scRNA-seq data and bulk data were downloaded from GEO and TCGA databases, respectively. The cell composition in KIRC was calculated using CIBERSORT. Univariate Cox regression analysis and LASSO Cox regression analysis were combined to determine the prognostic genes. Gene set variation analysis and cell-cell communication analysis were conducted to obtain more functional information. Additionally, functional analyses were conducted to determine the biological roles of si-LGALS1 in vitro.Results: We totally identified 2,249 significant differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in KIRC samples, meanwhile a significant distinct expression pattern was found in KIRC, involving Epithelial Mesenchymal Transition pathway. Among all cell types, significantly higher proportion of epithelial cells were observed in KIRC, and 289 DEGs were identified in epithelial cells. After cross analysis of all DEGs and 970 EMT related genes, SPARC, TMSB10, LGALS1, and VEGFA were optimal to build prognostic model. Our EMT related showed good predictive performance in KIRC. Remarkably, si-LGALS1 could inhibit migration and invasion ability of KIRC cells, which might be involved in suppressing EMT process.Conclusion: A novel powerful EMT related prognostic signature was built for KIRC patients, based on SPARC, TMSB10, LGALS1, and VEGFA. Of which, si-LGALS1 could inhibit migration and invasion ability of KIRC cells, which might be involved in suppressing EMT process.

Abstract Ongoing mass wasting through ice block falls is intensive at the north polar ice cap of Mars. We monitored how this activity is currently shaping the marginal steep scarps of the ice cap, which holds a record of the planet’s climate history. With AI-driven change detection between multi-temporal high-resolution satellite images, we created a comprehensive map of mass wasting across the entire North Polar Layered Deposits (NPLD). Our results show a more active erosion process than previously thought, with scarps retreating by up to ~3 m every kiloyear. The distribution of the active scarps indicates an ongoing asymmetric retreat of the already subcircular ice cap. The active scarps and the interior dune fields correlate strongly with exposures of the underlying, sandier Basal Unit (BU), providing evidence that erosion of the BU undermines the base of the NPLD. Moreover, ice block fall activity suggests potential areas where gypsum is released, given that the interior gypsum-bearing dune fields are located adjacent to these active scarps. Here, our study reveals the rates of present-day topographic change of the north polar ice cap, providing a valuable constraint for study of its past evolution.

An effective method for fabricating copper-nickel bimetallic liquid rocket engine thrust chambers involves utilizing laser directed energy deposition (LDED) technology. However, the state of the substrate surface significantly impacts the LDED process. This study investigates the effects of various substrate treatments on LDED single tracks, using CuCr0.8 high-copper alloy as the substrate and Inconel 718 as the deposition material. The treatments include polishing, sandblasting, laser etching, and cold spraying. Substrate surface roughness, laser absorptivity, molten pool morphology, and microstructure were characterized, and the mechanisms of laser absorptivity change and the different LDED processes were analyzed. The results indicate that the laser-etched surface exhibits the worst surface roughness (Ra 15.20 ± 0.60 μm), the highest laser absorptivity(80.70% at 1080 nm wavelength), the largest deposition width (947.33 ± 29.85 μm), and the maximum number of fine grains among the four substrates. Additionally, the cold-sprayed surface shows the largest deposition depth (237.33 ± 39.04 μm), the minimum number of fine grains and a higher laser absorptivity (66.20% at 1080 nm wavelength). In situ observations of molten pool formation and flow during LDED was conducted using an in situ high-speed high-resolution imaging system. The mechanisms underlying the alteration in laser absorptivity primarily involve the ''trapped light'' effect and modifications to the surface material. This research is significant as it provides foundational insights for laser processing of highly reflective materials, offering important theoretical and practical implications for engineering applications.

High-copper alloy/nickel-based high-temperature alloy bimetallic structures are widely utilized in critical components, such as thrust chambers of liquid rocket engines, water cooling circuits for fusion reactor deflectors, and electromagnetic railguns. Among various methods for fabricating Cu/Ni bimetallic structures, laser directed energy deposition (LDED) is considered one of the most promising techniques for depositing nickel-based high-temperature alloys onto high-copper alloy surfaces. In the LDED fabrication process, substrates with uneven thicknesses are a common. The process is characterized by its multi-parameter, high-sensitivity, and non-equilibrium solidification characteristics. Consequently, variations in substrate size can significantly affect molten pool morphology and fabrication stability. This study examines the size effect of a single track of LDED Inconel 718 (In718) on a CuCr0.8 high-copper alloy substrate. The results indicate a pronounced size effect when using a high thermal conductivity CuCr0.8 substrate, particularly regarding substrate thickness. By reducing the thermal conductivity of the CuCr0.8 substrate, the size effect is mitigated, improving the process adaptability of LDED. These findings provide valuable data for the laser processing of surfaces with uneven thickness and high thermal conductivity. They are expected to support the fabrication of variable thrust liquid rocket engines and advance the field of interplanetary exploration.

Chicken surfactant protein A1 (cSP-A1) is a soluble C-type lectin found primarily in chicken lungs. Its function and other potential bioactivities are unclear. This study aimed to express, purify, and identify recombinant cSP-A1 (RcSP-A1), investigate its effects on chicken macrophage HD11 cells, and evaluate its ability to regulate the LPS-induced inflammatory response. The results showed that RcSP-A1 was produced in HEK 293F cells and could be purified using a Ni2+ affinity column. The RcSP-A1 purified concentration was 7.5 µg/mL. Functional examinations showed that RcSP-A1 could aggregate all tested bacterial strains and led to a macrophage phagocytosis rate significantly higher than in the control (p < 0.01). Subsequently, HD11 cells, preincubated with various RcSP-A1 concentrations (12.5, 25, and 50 μg/mL) and 5 mM CaCl2 for 2 h, were stimulated by LPS (1 μg/mL) for 24 h. The results showed that RcSP-A1 significantly attenuated the stimulating effects of LPS on the transcription and protein expression levels of proinflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α) and inhibited nitric oxide production. Mechanism studies demonstrated that RcSP-A1 exerted an anti-inflammatory effect on LPS-stimulated cells by down-regulating the expression of TLR4, MyD88, and p65, up-regulating the expression of IкB-α, and inhibiting the activation of the NF-кB signaling pathway. These findings suggested that RcSP-A1 promoted bacterial aggregation and phagocytosis and inhibited the LPS-induced inflammatory response in HD11 cells through the TLR4/NF-κB signaling pathway, displaying an important role in innate immune defense.

Pulmonary fibrosis (PF) is a fatal disease with increasing incidence, poor prognosis, and unclear pathogenesis. Our previous research demonstrated the beneficial effects of the natural cyclopeptide Heterophyllin B (HB) in PF. However, the precise mechanism by which HB exerts its effects in PF remains unclear. Our study revealed HB's beneficial effects in alleviating PF symptoms and restoring the intestinal mucosal barrier. Subsequently, the microbiota-dependent antifibrotic efficacy of HB was verified using various delivery routes, antibiotic treatments, and faecal microbiota transplantation. Functionally, 16S rRNA sequencing, untargeted metabolomics, and co-incubation experiments revealed that the antifibrotic efficacy of HB was primarily contingent on the enrichment of Muribaculum intestinale and its metabolite, 3-hydroxybutyric acid. Mechanistically, indoleamine 2,3- dioxygenase 1 (IDO1)-mediated ferroptosis was identified as a pivotal process in initiating PF, and the anti-fibrotic efficacy of HB relies on suppressing IDO1-mediated ferroptosis. Conversely, IDO1 deficiency alleviated the symptoms of bleomycin-induced PF and ferroptosis in mice. Coincidentally, both IDO1 overexpression and ferroptosis were observed in the pulmonary tissue of patients with idiopathic PF. Collectively, this study revealed that HB alleviates PF by eliminating intestinal microecology and metabolism and highlights the feasibility of targeting IDO1 for PF treatment.

Abstract Identification of active sites in catalytic materials is important and helps establish approaches to the precise design of catalysts for achieving high reactivity. Generally, active sites of conventional heterogeneous catalysts can be single atom, nanoparticle or a metal/oxide interface. Herein, we report that metal/oxide reverse interfaces can also be active sites which are created from the coordinated migration of metal and oxide atoms. As an example, a Pd1/CeO2 single-atom catalyst prepared via atom trapping, which is otherwise inactive at 30 °C, is able to completely oxidize formaldehyde after steam treatment. The enhanced reactivity is due to the formation of a Ce2O3-Pd nanoparticle domain interface, which is generated by the migration of both Ce and Pd atoms on the atom-trapped Pd1/CeO2 catalyst during steam treatment. We show that the generation of metal oxide-metal interfaces can be achieved in other heterogeneous catalysts due to the coordinated mobility of metal and oxide atoms, demonstrating the formation of a new active interface when using metal single-atom material as catalyst precursor.

Background: Duck adenovirus 3 (DAdV-3) is an emerging pathogen that has caused severe economic losses to the duck industry in China. Recently, the infection of ducks with serotype 4 fowl adenovirus (FAdV-4) has also been reported in China. Therefore, an efficient bivalent vaccine to control the diseases caused by DAdV-3 and FAdV-4 is extremely urgent. In our previous study, a recombinant FAdV-4 expressing Fiber-2 of DAdV-3 was generated and designated as rFAdV-4-Fiber-2/DAdV-3. Methods: Here, the recombinant virus rFAdV-4-Fiber-2/DAdV-3 was inactivated to serve as a bivalent vaccine, and its immunogenicity and protective efficacy against DAdV-3 were evaluated in Muscovy ducks. Results: The subcutaneous injection of rFAdV-4-Fiber-2/DAdV-3 could efficiently induce antibodies against Fiber-2 of DAdV-3 and neutralize antibodies against FAdV-4. After challenges with DAdV-3, in comparison with the non-immunized ducks, the immunized ducks did not show any bodyweight loss, gross lesions, or histopathologic change. Moreover, viral loads in livers and kidneys from immunized ducks were undetectable, whereas those in non-immunized ducks with challenge were significantly high. Conclusions: All these data demonstrate that the inactivated recombinant virus rFAdV-4-Fiber-2/DAdV-3 has the potential to be an efficient vaccine candidate against both FAdV-4 and DAdV-3, although efficacy for FAdV-4 needs to be confirmed experimentally.

This paper proposes a neural network-interacted robust coordinated control (NNIRCC) scheme to address the problem of full-vehicle active air suspension (AAS) systems subject to uncertainties and different time-varying actuator delays. The NNIRCC scheme consists of neural network-interacted (NNI) approximator, projector-based estimator and robust coordinated control term. The NNI approximator based on the radial basis function is employed to capture the nonlinearities caused by the unmodeled dynamics of adjustable air spring. Meanwhile, an interactive updating algorithm is designed to manipulate the weights of the NNI approximator so as to improve the approximation accuracy. Moreover, projector-based nonlinear estimators are designed to handle the prevalent sensitive parameter variations (such as vehicle body mass and its moments of inertia). Furthermore, delay compensators are developed and integrated into the synthesized coordinated control law to mitigate the impact of different time-varying input delays caused by force actuators. The asymptotic stability of closed-loop system is rigorously proven by employing a Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional, guaranteeing the boundedness of both tracking and estimation errors within a finite time. Additionally, co-simulation results are provided and analyzed, illustrating the feasibility and efficiency of the proposed NNIRCC scheme.

Horticultural plants contain various secondary metabolites (SMs), including flavonoids, terpenoids, and alkaloids. These compounds play a critical role in plant growth, helping the plants adapt to different types of stress and providing numerous health benefits to humans. Advances in detection methods, such as liquid phase mass spectrometry and spatial metabolomics, have enabled the identification and characterization of a growing variety of SMs and their unique functions in horticultural plants. Recent studies have investigated the effects of SMs on horticultural plants under different biotic and abiotic stresses. This article offers a detailed review of the functions of key representative SMs in horticultural plants, focusing on their responses to biotic and abiotic stresses and their impact on human health. Furthermore, we explore the potential of using these compounds to improve the resistance of horticultural plants through future breeding efforts.

Abstract The direct oxidation of methane to methanol (MTM) remains a significant challenge in heterogeneous catalysis due to the high dissociation energy of the C-H bond in methane and the high desorption energy of methanol. In this work, we demonstrate a breakthrough in selective MTM by achieving a high methanol space-time yield of 2678 mmol molCu−1 h−1 with 93% selectivity in a continuous methane-steam reaction at 400 °C. The superior performance is attributed to the confinement effect of 6-membered ring (6MR) voids in SSZ-13 zeolite, which host isolated Cu-OH single sites. Our results provide a deeper understanding of the role of Cu-zeolites in continuous methane-steam to methanol conversion and pave the way for further improvement.

The utilization of fossil fuels has brought unprecedented prosperity and development to human society, but also caused environmental pollution and global warming triggered by excess greenhouse gases emission. For one thing, the excess emission of carbon dioxide (CO2), which has a negative impact on global temperature and ocean acidity, needs to be controlled. For another, the depletion of fossil fuels will eventually force people to seek alternative carbon sources to maintain a sustainable economy. Thus, using renewable energy to convert CO2 and biomass into value-added chemicals and fuels is a promising method to overcome urgent problems. The hydrogenation of CO2 is very important to mitigate the greenhouse effect caused by CO2, while biomass conversion can produce alternative renewable biofuels and green chemicals. As a kind of promising catalyst, heterogeneous single-atom catalyst (SAC) has received extensive attention in the past decades. SACs combine the advantages of homogeneous catalysts with uniform active sites and heterogeneous catalysts that are easily separable. In this review, we will give a comprehensive overview of the latest progress in CO2 selective hydrogenation and biomass conversion via SACs.

Inflammation, abnormal cholesterol metabolism, and macrophage infiltration are involved in the destruction of the extracellular matrix of the nucleus pulposus (NP), culminating in intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD). Whether nimbolide (Nim), a natural extract, can alleviate IDD is unclear. In this study, we demonstrated that Nim promotes cholesterol efflux and inhibits the activation of the nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling pathways by activating sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) in nucleus pulposus cells (NPCs) during inflammation. Thus, Nim balanced matrix anabolism and catabolism of NPCs. However, the inhibition of SIRT1 significantly attenuated the effects of Nim. We also found that Nim promoted the expression of SIRT1 in RAW 264.7, which enhanced the proportion of M2 macrophages by facilitating cholesterol homeostasis reprogramming and impeded M1-like macrophages polarization by blocking the activation of inflammatory signaling. Based on these results, Nim can improve the microenvironment and facilitate matrix metabolism equilibrium in NPCs. Furthermore, in vivo treatment with Nim delayed IDD progression by boosting SIRT1 expression, modulating macrophage polarization and preserving the extracellular matrix. In conclusion, Nim may represent a novel therapeutic strategy for treating IDD.

Fabricating high strength high conductivity (HSHC) Cu alloy inner parts by laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) and high-strength steel out layers on Cu alloy surfaces by laser-direct energy deposition (LDED), e.g., laser powder hybrid additive manufacturing (LPH-AM), has shown promise in the development of rocket engine thrust chambers with large thrust forces. In this study, we successfully fabricated a QCr0.8 HSHC Cu alloy/S06 stainless steel bimetal structure via In718 multi-interlayer using LPH-AM. We investigated the relative density, defects, microstructure, and interfacial characteristics of the bimetal structure in detail. The results indicate that the sample achieved up to 99.9% relative density with no naked defects and good metallurgical bonding at the QCr0.8/In718 and In718/S06 interfaces. The LPH-AM-ed QCr0.8/In718 interface exhibited a combination of columnar and equiaxed dendrites. The vertically combined sample exhibited an average ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and break elongation (EL) of 300.3 ± 10.6 MPa and 15.0 ± 1.4%, respectively, with fracture occurring at the QCr0.8 side. This study provides a new method for fabricating complex-shaped Cu/steel bimetal components, such as rocket engine thrust chambers.

Appropriate water supply is crucial for high-yield and high-quality potato tuber production. However, potatoes are mainly planted in arid and semi-arid regions in China, where the precipitation usually cannot meet the water demand throughout the growth period. In view of the actual situation of water shortage in these areas, to monitor the water status of potato plants timely and accurately and thus precisely control the irrigation are of significance for water-saving management of potatoes. Hyperspectral remote sensing has unique advantages in diagnosing crop water stress. In this paper, the canopy spectral reflectance and plant water content were measured under five irrigation treatments. The spectral parameters that respond to plant water content were selected, and a hyperspectral water diagnosis model for leaf water content (LWC) and aboveground water content (AGWC) of potato plants was established. It was found that potato tuber yield was the highest during the entire growth period under sufficient irrigation, and the plant water content showed a downward trend as the degree of drought intensified. The peak hyperspectral reflectance of potato plant canopies appeared in the red wavelength, where the reflectance varied significantly under different water treatments and decreased with decreasing irrigation. Six models with sensitive bands, first-order derivatives, and moisture spectral indices were established to monitor water content of potato plants. The R2 values of partial least squares regression (PLSR), support vector machine (SVM), and BP neural network (BP) models are 0.8418, 0.9020, and 0.8926, respectively, between LWC and hyperspectral data; and 0.8003, 0.8167, and 0.8671, respectively, between the AGWC and hyperspectral data. These six models can all predict the water content of potato plants, but SVM is the best model for predicting LWC of potato plants. These results are of great significance for guiding precision irrigation of potato plants at different growth stages.

(1) Objectives: To investigate the deviations between the morphological dimensions of finished cores and desired dimensions made by three available fabricating techniques. To assess the precious metal loss in custom precious metal post and core restorative treatment in the dental clinic. (2) Methods: Titanium posts and cores were fabricated using three different techniques: digital scanning impression technology, digital scanning wax-pattern technology, and the traditional lost-wax casting method. Geomagic Studio was used to fit the scanned model data to the digital design data of the expected preparation and to analyze the 3D deviations between the two. Precious metal debris from the precious metal post and core was collected, processed, weighed and analyzed for precious metal elements by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy layered images. (3) Results: In all 48 pairs of models, there were positive and negative deviations, with the largest mean positive deviation of (0.752 ± 0.037 mm) for models made by the semi-digital scanning wax-pattern technique. A total of 7001.3 mg of metals was recovered from the waste streams collected, which contained precious metals—mainly gold, silver, and platinum. (4) Conclusions: There were discrepancies between the custom core and the expected preparation regardless of the fabrication process used. The digital scanning impression technology showed better dimensional rationality of crown cores. Custom precious metal posts and cores can have an average precious metal loss of 129.7 mg per case in the dental clinic.

Three-dimensional (3D) phenotyping is important for studying plant structure and function. Light detection and ranging (LiDAR) has gained prominence in 3D plant phenotyping due to its ability to collect 3D point clouds. However, organ-level branch detection remains challenging due to small targets, sparse points, and low signal-to-noise ratios. In addition, extracting biologically relevant angle traits is difficult. In this study, we developed a stratified, clustered, and growing-based algorithm (SCAG) for soybean branch detection and branch angle calculation from LiDAR data, which is heuristic, open-source, and expandable. SCAG achieved high branch detection accuracy (F-score = 0.77) and branch angle calculation accuracy (r = 0.84) when evaluated on 152 diverse soybean varieties. Meanwhile, the SCAG outperformed 2 other classic algorithms, the support vector machine (F-score = 0.53) and density-based methods (F-score = 0.55). Moreover, after applying the SCAG to 405 soybean varieties over 2 consecutive years, we quantified various 3D traits, including canopy width, height, stem length, and average angle. After data filtering, we identified novel heritable and repeatable traits for evaluating soybean density tolerance potential, such as the ratio of average angle to height and the ratio of average angle to stem length, which showed greater potential than the well-known ratio of canopy width to height trait. Our work demonstrates remarkable advances in 3D phenotyping and plant architecture screening. The algorithm can be applied to other crops, such as maize and tomato. Our dataset, scripts, and software are public, which can further benefit the plant science community by enhancing plant architecture characterization and ideal variety selection.

IntroductionLipidomics elucidates the roles of lipids in both physiological and pathological processes, intersecting with many diseases and cellular functions. The maintenance of lipid homeostasis, essential for cell health, significantly influences the survival, maturation, and functionality of sperm during fertilization. While capacitation and the acrosome reaction, key processes before fertilization, involve substantial lipidomic alterations, a comprehensive understanding of the changes in human spermatozoa's lipidomic profiles during these processes remains unknown. This study aims to explicate global lipidomic changes during capacitation and the acrosome reaction in human sperm, employing an untargeted lipidomic strategy using ultra-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS).MethodsTwelve semen specimens, exceeding the WHO reference values for semen parameters, were collected. After discontinuous density gradient separation, sperm concentration was adjusted to 2 x 106 cells/ml and divided into three groups: uncapacitated, capacitated, and acrosome-reacted. UPLC-MS analysis was performed after lipid extraction from these groups. Spectral peak alignment and statistical analysis, using unsupervised principal component analysis (PCA), bidirectional orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis (O2PLS-DA) analysis, and supervised partial least-squares-latent structure discriminate analysis (PLS-DA), were employed to identify the most discriminative lipids.ResultsThe 1176 lipid peaks overlapped across the twelve individuals in the uncapacitated, capacitated, and acrosome-reacted groups: 1180 peaks between the uncapacitated and capacitated groups, 1184 peaks between the uncapacitated and acrosome-reacted groups, and 1178 peaks between the capacitated and acrosome-reacted groups. The count of overlapping peaks varied among individuals, ranging from 739 to 963 across sperm samples. Moreover, 137 lipids had VIP values > 1.0 and twenty-two lipids had VIP > 1.5, based on the O2PLS-DA model. Furthermore, the identified twelve lipids encompassed increases in PI 44:10, LPS 20:4, LPA 20:5, and LPE 20:4, and decreases in 16-phenyl-tetranor-PGE2, PC 40:6, PS 35:4, PA 29:1, 20-carboxy-LTB4, and 2-oxo-4-methylthio-butanoic acid.DiscussionThis study has been the first time to investigate the lipidomics profiles associated with acrosome reaction and capacitation in human sperm, utilizing UPLC-MS in conjunction with multivariate data analysis. These findings corroborate earlier discoveries on lipids during the acrosome reaction and unveil new metabolites. Furthermore, this research highlights the effective utility of UPLC-MS-based lipidomics for exploring diverse physiological states in sperm. This study offers novel insights into lipidomic changes associated with capacitation and the acrosome reaction in human sperm, which are closely related to male reproduction.

Abstract Background Thoracolumbar fascia injury (FI) is rarely discussed in osteoporotic vertebral fracture (OVF) patients in previous literature and it is usually neglected and treated as an unmeaning phenomenon. We aimed to evaluate the characteristics of the thoracolumbar fascia injury and further discuss its clinical significance in the treatment of kyphoplasty for osteoporotic vertebral fracture (OVF) patients. Methods Based on the presence or absence of FI, 223 OVF patients were divided into two groups. The demographics of patients with and without FI were compared. The visual analogue scale and Oswestry disability index scores were compared preoperatively and after PKP treatment between these groups. Results Thoracolumbar fascia injuries were observed in 27.8% of patients. Most FI showed a multi-level distribution pattern which involved a mean of 3.3 levels. Location of fractures, severity of fractures and severity of trauma were significantly different between patients with and without FI. In further comparison, severity of trauma was significantly different between patients with severe and non-severe FI. In patients with FI, VAS and ODI scores of 3 days and 1 month after PKP treatment were significantly worse compared to those without FI. It showed the same trend in VAS and ODI scores in patients with severe FI when compared to those patients with non-severe FI. Conclusions FI is not rare in OVF patients and presents multiple levels of involvement. The more serious trauma suffered, the more severe thoracolumbar fascia injury presented. The presence of FI which was related to residual acute back pain significantly affected the effectiveness of PKP in treating OVFs. Trial registration retrospectively registered.

Abstract Excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) in nucleus pulposus cells (NPCs) promote extracellular matrix (ECM) degradation and cellular inflammatory responses by activating a variety of cellular pathways, ultimately inducing cell apoptosis and leading to the development of low back pain. Here, we designed and fabricated an isoginkgetin-loaded ROS-responsive delivery system (IGK@SeNP) based on diselenide block copolymers. Successfully encapsulated IGK was released intelligently and rapidly in a microenvironment with high ROS levels in degenerative disc. Controlled-release IGK not only efficiently scavenged ROS from the intervertebral disc together with diselenide block copolymers but also effectively enhanced autophagy in NPCs to inhibit ECM degradation and cell apoptosis, and showed significant therapeutic effects in the rat intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD) model. Overall, the synergistic effects of IGK@SeNP in ROS scavenging and autophagy enhancement endowed it with an attractive therapeutic strategy for IDD treatment.

Repeated high-resolution imaging has revealed current mass wasting in the form of ice block falls at steep scarps of Mars. However, both the accuracy and efficiency of ice-fragments’ detection are limited when using conventional computer vision methods. Existing deep learning methods suffer from the problem of shadow interference and indistinguishability between classes. To address these issues, we proposed a deep learning-driven change detection model that focuses on regions of interest. A convolutional neural network simultaneously analyzed bitemporal images, i.e., pre- and postdetach images. An augmented attention module was integrated in order to suppress irrelevant regions such as shadows while highlighting the detached ice-fragments. A combination of dice loss and focal loss was introduced to deal with the issue of imbalanced classes and hard, misclassified samples. Our method showed a true positive rate of 84.2% and a false discovery rate of 16.9%. Regarding the shape of the detections, the pixel-based evaluation showed a balanced accuracy of 85% and an F1 score of 73.2% for the detached ice-fragments. This last score reflected the difficulty in delineating the exact boundaries of some events both by a human and the machine. Compared with five state-of-the-art change detection methods, our method can achieve a higher F1 score and surpass other methods in excluding the interference of the changed shadows. Assessing the detections of the detached ice-fragments with the help of previously detected corresponding shadow changes demonstrated the capability and robustness of our proposed model. Furthermore, the good performance and quick processing speed of our developed model allow us to efficiently study large-scale areas, which is an important step in estimating the ongoing mass wasting and studying the evolution of the martian polar scarps.

Abstract The property of maintaining the lens state of the liquid crystal (LC) lens during the switching between positive and negative lens states is made use of in the fast acquirement of multi-focus images without magnification change. A depth from focus (DFF) pipeline that can generate a low-error depth map and an all-in-focus image is proposed. The depth of the scene is then obtained via DFF pipeline from the captured images. The depth sensor proposed in this paper has the advantages of simple structure, low cost, and long service life.

The development of the efficient catalyst in the direct H2O2 synthesis (DHS) from H2 and O2 remains a formidable challenge. Here, the authors develop a two-step approach to prepare a layer of Pd oxide on PdSn nanowires which displays superior reactivity in the DHS at zero Celcius.

In this paper, we present a novel robust adaptive neural network-based control framework to address the ride height tracking control problem of active air suspension systems with magnetorheological fluid damper (MRD-AAS) subject to uncertain mass and time-varying input delay. First, a radial basis function neural network (RBFNN) approximator is designed to compensate for unmodeled dynamics of the MRD. Then, a projector-based estimator is developed to estimate uncertain parameter variation (sprung mass). Additionally, to deal with the effect of input delay, a time-delay compensator is integrated in the adaptive control law to enhance the transient response of MRD-AAS system. By introducing a Lyapunov–Krasovskii (LK) functional, both ride height tracking and estimator errors can robustly converge towards the neighborhood of the desired values, achieving uniform ultimate boundness. Finally, comparative simulation results based on a dynamic co-simulator built in AMESim 2021.2 and Matlab/Simulink 2019(b) are given to illustrate the validity of the proposed control framework, showing its effectiveness to operate ride height regulation with MRD-AAS systems accurately and reliably under random road excitations.

Objectives: The current half-digital post-core fabrication technique can replace the conventional methods; however, it does not consider the impact occlusion has on the digital design. This study proposed a half-digital workflow that integrated intracanal impression with dentition scanning, and evaluated the accuracy of the post-cores fabricated by it. Methods: Standard models with three extracted teeth (a central incisor, a premolar, and a molar) were prepared. Primary colon squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is extremely rare and associated with a poor prognosis. Moreover, there is no treatment guideline for this disease. Proficient mismatch repair/microsatellite-stable (pMMR/MSS) colorectal adenocarcinoma is refractory to immune monotherapy. Although the combination of immunotherapy with chemotherapy in pMMR/MSS colorectal cancer (CRC) is currently under investigation, the clinical activity of this approach in colorectal SCC remains unknown. In this article, we report the case of a pMMR/MSS CRC patient with ascending colon SCC who had high programmed cell death–ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression and the a missense mutation in codon 600 of the B-Raf proto-oncogene (BRAF V600E) mutation. The patient exhibited a significant response to the combination of immunotherapy and chemotherapy. After eight cycles of treatment with the combination of sintilimab and mFOLFOX6 (oxaliplatin, fluorouracil, and leucovorin), computed tomography–guided microwave ablation of the liver metastasis was performed. The patient achieved excellent durable response and continues to experience a good quality of life. The present case indicates that programmed cell death 1 blockade combined with chemotherapy may be an effective therapy for patients with pMMR/MSS colon SCC and high PD-L1 expression. Furthermore, PD-L1 expression may be a biomarker for immunotherapy in patients with colorectal SCC.

The production of high-resolution digital terrain models (DTMs) based on images is often hampered by the lack of appropriate stereo observations. Here, we propose a deep learning-based reconstruction of pixel-resolution DTMs from Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) single-view narrow angle camera (NAC) images, constrained by Selenological and Engineering Explorer and LRO LOLA Elevation Models (SLDEM). The procedure is carried out for a set of adjacent images, and the mosaicking of a contiguous large-area DTM is demonstrated. The approach is applied to the CE-3 and CE-4 landing sites, involving six multiple coverage and eight adjacent NAC L/R image pairs, respectively. For the DTM reconstruction, we use an improved convolutional neural network architecture with a weighted sum loss function involving three loss terms. We demonstrate that our method is robust and can deal with images acquired under varying illumination conditions. The DTM mosaic (1.5 m pixel size) covering the CE-4 landing area (72.8 × 30.3 km) is without apparent seams between the individual image boundaries and consistent with the SLDEM (60 m pixel size) in terms of overall elevation, trend, and scale, but is showing considerably more morphologic detail.

Deactivation of supported metal catalysts via thermally induced sintering is a major concern in the catalysis community. Here, the authors demonstrate that enlarging particle distance to over the critical distance could suppress the particle coalescence greatly up to 900 °C.

Abstract Selective conversion of specific functional groups to desired products is highly important but still challenging in industrial catalytic processes. The adsorption state of surface species is the key factor in modulating the conversion of functional groups, which is correspondingly determined by the uniformity of active sites. However, the non‐identical number of metal atoms, geometric shape, and morphology of conventional nanometer‐sized metal particles/clusters normally lead to the non‐uniform active sites with diverse geometric configurations and local coordination environments, which causes the distinct adsorption states of surface species. Hence, it is highly desired to modulate the homogeneity of the active sites so that the catalytic transformations can be better confined to the desired direction. In this review, the construction strategies and characterization techniques of the uniform active sites that are atomically dispersed on various supports are examined. In particular, their unique behavior in boosting the catalytic performance in various chemical transformations is discussed, including selective hydrogenation, selective oxidation, Suzuki coupling, and other catalytic reactions. In addition, the dynamic evolution of the active sites under reaction conditions and the industrial utilization of the single‐atom catalysts are highlighted. Finally, the current challenges and frontiers are identified, and the perspectives on this flourishing field is provided.

Reclaimed water provides a reliable and economical alternative source of irrigation water for landscape use but may have elevated levels of salts that are detrimental to sensitive landscape plants. Landscape professionals must use salt-tolerant plants in regions where reclaimed water is used. Ornamental grasses are commonly used as landscape plants in the Intermountain West of the United States due to low maintenance input, drought tolerance, and unique texture. Six ornamental grass species, including Acorus gramineus (Japanese rush), Andropogon ternarius (silver bluestem), Calamagrostis ×acutiflora (feather reed grass), Carex morrowii (Japanese sedge), Festuca glauca (blue fescue), and Sporobolus heterolepis (prairie dropseed), were evaluated for salinity tolerance. Plants were irrigated every 4 days with a fertilizer solution at an electrical conductivity (EC) of 1.2 dS·m–1 (control) or with a saline solution at an EC of 5.0 dS·m–1 (EC 5) or 10.0 dS·m–1 (EC 10). At 47 days, most species in EC 5 exhibited good visual quality with averaged visual scores greater than 4.6 (0 = dead, 5 = excellent). In EC 10, most A. gramineus plants died, but C. ×acutiflora, F. glauca, and S. heterolepis had no foliar salt damage. At 95 days, C. ×acutiflora, F. glauca, and S. heterolepis in EC 5 had good visual quality with averaged visual scores greater than 4.5. Acorus gramineus, A. ternarius, and C. morrowii showed foliar salt damage with averaged visual scores of 2.7, 3.2, and 3.4, respectively. In EC 10, A. gramineus died, and other grass species exhibited moderate to severe foliar salt damage, except C. ×acutiflora, which retained good visual quality. Plant height, leaf area, number of tillers, shoot dry weight, and/or gas exchange parameters also decreased depending on plant species, salinity level, and the duration of exposure to salinity stress. In conclusion, A. gramineus was the most salt-sensitive species, whereas C. ×acutiflora was the most salt-tolerant species. Festuca glauca and S. heterolepis were more tolerant to salinity than A. ternarius and C. morrowii. Calamagrostis ×acutiflora, F. glauca, and S. heterolepis appear to be more suitable for landscapes in which reclaimed water is used for irrigation. Plant responses to saline water irrigation in this research could also be applied to landscapes in salt-prone areas and coastal regions with saltwater intrusion into aquifers and landscapes affected by maritime salt spray.

Planetary mapping product established by topographic remote sensing is one of the most significant achievements of contemporary technology. Modern planetary remote sensing technology now measures the topography of familiar solid planets/satellites such as Mars and the Moon with sub-meter precision, and its applications extend to the Kuiper Belt of the Solar System. However, due to a lack of fundamental knowledge of planetary remote sensing technology, the general public and even the scientific community often misunderstand these astounding accomplishments. Because of this technical gap, the information that reaches the public is sometimes misleading and makes it difficult for the scientific community to effectively respond to and address this misinformation. Furthermore, the potential for incorrect interpretation of the scientific analysis might increase as planetary research itself increasingly relies on publicly accessible tools and data without a sufficient understanding of the underlying technology. This review intends to provide the research community and personnel involved in planetary geologic and geomorphic studies with the technical foundation of planetary topographic remote sensing. To achieve this, we reviewed the scientific results established over centuries for the topography of each planet/satellite in the Solar System and concisely presented their technical bases. To bridge the interdisciplinary gap in planetary science research, a special emphasis was placed on providing photogrammetric techniques, a key component of remote sensing of planetary topographic remote sensing.

Single-atom catalysis is a research Frontier and has attracted extensive interests in catalysis. Significant progresses have been carried out in the synthesis and characterization of metal single-atom catalysts (SACs). However, the stability and catalytic reactivity of metal SAC at elevated temperatures are not well documented because single atoms sinter at elevated temperatures. Therefore, the development of stable and reactive SAC at high temperatures remains a formidable challenge. In this perspective, we summarize recent efforts on the preparation of the thermally-stable SACs synthesized at elevated temperature via the reverse-Ostwald ripening mechanism, including the approaches of atom trapping and vapor-phase self-assembly. The reducibility of lattice oxygen, the loading upper limit and the location of the metal single atom are discussed, combining experiments with simulations. In addition, we demonstrate that the coordination structure of the metal single atom can be tailored to address the relationship of structure and performances of the metal SAC in reactions. We expect that this perspective can provide some insights to guide the study for the rational design of thermally-stable and active single atom catalysts, which are especially suitable for high-temperature reactions.

The thermocatalytic conversion of hexose into valuable chemicals such as methyl lactate under mild conditions is very appealing. Here, we report that Mo, Mg co-modified Sn-β catalyst can effectively catalyze the transformation of glucose and fructose into alkyl lactate at moderate temperatures. A maximum yield of around 35% of methyl lactate was achieved from the conversion of glucose in methanol at 100°C over Sn-β catalyst modified with 3 wt% Mo and 0.5 wt% Mg. However, up to 82.8% yield of ethyl lactate was obtained in the case of fructose in ethanol upon the same catalytic condition, suggesting a significant solvent effect. The Mo species plays a key role to enable the retro-aldol condensation of fructose, in which the competing side reactions are significantly suppressed with the assistance of neighboring Mg species probably through a synergetic effect of Lewis acid-base.

Model predictive control (MPC) has been commonly recognized as a promising control strategy for the quasi Z-source inverter (qZSI). However, large control error is regarded as an innate drawback of MPC due to only one voltage vector applied per control cycle. In this paper, an improved MPC, namely combinative voltage vectors based MPC, is proposed for the qZSI to reduce the control error and improve steady-state performance. Two different voltage vectors are applied in one control cycle, so that the cost function value can be reduced. The errors of the inductor current, the capacitor voltage, and the output current of the qZSI included in the cost function can be decreased greatly. Furthermore, the performance investigation of the proposed method indicates that the two selected voltage vectors consisting of a non-shoot-through vector and a shoot-through vector is of help in shorting the charge-discharge period of inductor. Thus, the inductor current ripple as well as the total harmonics distortion (THD) of the output current is greatly reduced. The experimental results show the validity and the advantages of the proposed method.

More than half of residential water in Utah is used for landscape irrigation. Reclaimed water has been used to irrigate urban landscapes to conserve municipal water. High salt levels in reclaimed water may pose osmotic stress and ion toxicity to salt-sensitive plants. Viburnums are commonly used landscape plants, but salinity tolerance of species and cultivars is unclear. The objective of this study was to characterize gas exchanges and mineral nutrition responses of 12 viburnum taxa subjected to salinity stress in a greenhouse study. Plants were irrigated with a nutrient solution at an electrical conductivity (EC) of 1.3 dS·m–1 or saline solution at an EC of 5.0 dS·m–1 or 10.0 dS·m–1. The net photosynthesis rate (Pn), stomatal conductance (gS), and transpiration rate (E) of all viburnum taxa, except for Viburnum ×burkwoodii and V. בNCVX1’, decreased to various degrees with increasing salinity levels. The Pn, gS, and E of V. ×burkwoodii and V. בNCVX1’ were unaffected by saline solutions of 5.0 dS·m–1 at the 4th and 9th week after treatment initiation, with the exception of the Pn of V. ×burkwoodii, which decreased at the 9th week. Leaf sodium (Na+) and chloride (Cl–) concentrations of all viburnum taxa increased as salinity levels increased. Viburnum ×burkwoodii had relatively low leaf Na+ and Cl– when irrigated with saline solutions of 10.0 dS·m–1. Plant growth and gas exchange parameters, including visual score, plant height, Pn, gS, E, and water use efficiency (WUE) correlated negatively with leaf Na+ and Cl– concentrations. The ratio of potassium (K+) to Na+ (K+/Na+) and ratio of calcium (Ca2+) to Na+ (Ca2+/Na+) decreased when salinity levels increased. Visual score, plant height, Pn, gS, E, and WUE correlated positively with the K+/Na+ and Ca2+/Na+ ratios. These results suggest excessive Na+ and Cl– accumulation inhibited plant photosynthesis and growth, and affected K+ and Ca2+ uptake negatively.

Viburnums are widely used in gardens and landscapes throughout the United States. Although salinity tolerance varies among plant species, research-based information is limited on the relative salt tolerance of viburnum species. The morphological and growth responses of 12 viburnum taxa to saline solution irrigation were evaluated under greenhouse conditions. Viburnum taxa included Viburnum ×burkwoodii, V. cassinoides ‘SMNVCDD’, V. dentatum ‘Christom’, V. dentatum var. deamii ‘SMVDLS’, V. dilatatum ‘Henneke’, V. בNCVX1’, V. nudum ‘Bulk’, V. opulus ‘Roseum’, V. plicatum var. tomentosum ‘Summer Snowflake’, V. pragense ‘Decker’, V. ×rhytidophylloides ‘Redell’, and V. trilobum. A nutrient solution at an electrical conductivity (EC) of 1.3 dS·m−1 (control) or saline solutions at ECs of 5.0 and 10.0 dS·m−1 were applied eight times over a 9-week period. Growth, visual quality, and morphological characteristics were quantified at the 4th week and 8th–9th week to assess the impact of salinity stress on the viburnum taxa. Saline solution irrigation imposed detrimental salinity stress on viburnum plant growth and visual quality, and the degree of salt damage was dependent on the salinity levels of irrigation solution and the length of exposure to salinity stress as well as viburnum taxa. Viburnum ×burkwoodii and V. בNCVX1’ had little foliar salt damage during the entire experiment, except those irrigated with saline solution at an EC of 10.0 dS·m−1 exhibited slight to moderate foliar salt damage at the eighth week. Viburnum dilatatum ‘Henneke’, V. plicatum var. tomentosum ‘Summer Snowflake’, and V. trilobum irrigated with saline solution at an EC of 5.0 dS·m−1 had slight and severe foliar salt damage at the 4th and 8th week, respectively. Plants irrigated with saline solution at an EC of 10.0 dS·m−1 exhibited severe foliar salt damage at the 4th week, and all died by the 8th week. Other viburnum taxa also showed various foliar salt damage, especially at an EC of 10.0 dS·m−1. The shoot dry weights of V. ×burkwoodii and V. בNCVX1’ irrigated with saline solution at ECs of 5.0 and 10.0 dS·m−1 were similar to those in the control at both harvest dates. However, the shoot dry weight of other tested viburnum taxa decreased to some extent at the 9th week. A cluster analysis concluded that V. ×burkwoodii and V. בNCVX1’ were considered the most salt-tolerant viburnum taxa, whereas V. dilatatum ‘Henneke’, V. plicatum var. tomentosum ‘Summer Snowflake’, and V. trilobum were sensitive to salinity levels used in this study. This research may guide the green industry to choose relatively tolerant viburnum taxa for landscape use and nursery production where low-quality water is used for irrigation.

Epidemiological and toxicological studies have demonstrated that exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) during pregnancy is harmful to the tissues of the offspring. However, the mechanism by which PM2.5 exposure causes lung damage in the offspring or potential dietary therapy for this condition remains unclear. Mogrosides (MGs) are derived from the traditional plant Siraitia grosvenorii and are used medicinally, where they can moisten the lungs and relieve coughing. In this study, pregnant rats were exposed to PM2.5 by intratracheal instillation and treated with MGs by gavage to model the effect of PM2.5 in the offspring and the interventional effect of MGs on lung tissue. We then used transcriptomics, metabolomics, and RT-qPCR as tools to look for metabolite and genetic changes in the offspring. We found that when compared to the control group, the mRNA levels of the inflammatory mediator Pla2g2d and the metabolites lysophosphatidylcholines (LysoPCs) and arachidonic acid (AA) were up-regulated in the lung tissues of PM2.5 group. In contrast, these inflammatory changes were restored after treatment with MGs during pregnancy. In addition, the levels of AA, LPC 15:0 and LPC 18:0 were elevated in the PM2.5 group compared with control group. This increase was inhibited by co-administration of MGs. The change of PGA1 was adverse. In conclusion, even a relatively low exposure to PM2.5 in rats during pregnancy produces inflammation in the lungs of the male offspring, and an intervention with MGs could significantly alleviate this effect. Furthermore, Pla2g2d may represent a potential target for MGs resulting in the improvement of PM2.5-induced lung injury.

Abstract Purposes Hip fracture leads to decreased activity and an increased risk of pulmonary complications. The main purpose of this study was to observe the lung capacity, cough capacity of the elderly patient with acute hip fracture, and assess the effects and the feasibility of using a special-designed “upper-body yoga” training to treat elderly patients with hip fracture. Methods This was a prospective, randomized, and single-blind study. Eighty-four subjects aged over 65 years were randomly divided into either a control group or a yoga group to undergo an abdominal breathing program or an “upper-body yoga” program until 4 weeks after surgery. The primary outcomes were forced vital capacity/predicted value (FVC%), peak cough flow (PCF), Barthel Index (BI), and the incidence of pneumonia. The secondary outcomes were the rates of right skills and inclination. Results Thirty-nine subjects in the yoga group and 40 subjects in the control group completed this study. At the end of the first training week, FVC% (74.14% ± 13.11% vs. 70.87% ± 10.46%, P = 0.231) showed no significant difference between the two groups, while the value of PCF (204.80 ± 33.45 L/min vs. 189.06 ± 34.80 L/min, P = 0.048) and BI (38.59 ± 8.66 vs. 33.00 ± 9.32, P = 0.009) in the yoga group was higher. After 4 weeks of treatment, FVC%, PCF, and BI were higher in the yoga group (78.83% ± 13.31 % vs. 72.20% ± 10.53%, P = 0.016; 216.16 ± 39.29 L/min vs. 194.95 ± 31.14 L/min, P = 0.008; 70.77 ± 10.23 vs. 65.75 ± 11.30, P = 0.019). One in the control group and nobody in the yoga group was diagnosed with pneumonia. There was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of the rates of right skills, whereas more elderly people preferred the training program of the “upper-body yoga.” Conclusion Elderly patients with acute hip fractures are at risk of impaired lung capacity and inadequate cough. “Upper-body yoga” training may improve the quality of daily life, vital capacity, and cough flow in elderly patients, making it a better choice for bedridden patients with hip fracture.
