This article presents a case study of a decolonized curriculum development in the Art History programme at the small liberal arts institution Kalamazoo College (Michigan, USA). It discusses the curriculum plan, methods for learning, assessment and potential applications for this approach beyond the case study. Paying attention to questions about the origins of art history, and its long-established methods and canon within the Western academy, this article proposes that any approach to decolonizing an art history curriculum must take into account the frameworks and methods of the knowledge systems it employs, must continually assess, reflect and hold accountable those who participate in its implementation and maintenance, and, importantly, must recognize that decolonization work is a necessarily messy and ongoing process.

Four dicationic palladium and platinum ethylene complexes of the type [M(PNP)(C2H4)]X2 (M=Pd, Pt; X=BF4, SbF6, PNP=2,6‐bis(diphenylphosphinomethyl)pyridine) were studied as pre‐catalysts for the intermolecular hydroarylation of acetylene under acid‐free conditions. The palladium complex [Pd(PNP)(C2H4)](SbF6)2 was found to be the most active catalyst for the addition of pentamethylbenzene to acetylene at room temperature. In a 31P NMR spectroscopic study the impact of the counter anion on the rate determining step was demonstrated. Various reaction parameters were screened to optimize the catalytic efficiency. The presence of small amounts of water were beneficial and increased the reaction rate. Water acts as co‐catalyst assisting in proton transfer during the catalytic reaction. After optimization of the reaction conditions, a benchmark for the palladium(II) catalyzed hydroarylation of acetylene was achieved with TON 200 at room temperature in 24 h under acid‐free conditions. Survivors of sexual assault (SA) and intimate partner violence (IPV) report high rates of alcohol misuse and often receive services from community agencies. We conducted a qualitative study to examine barriers and facilitators to treatment for alcohol misuse after experiences of SA/IPV among survivors (N = 13) and victim service professionals (VSPs; N = 22) at community-based agencies using semi-structured interviews and focus groups. Survivors discussed seeking treatment for alcohol misuse when alcohol is being used to cope with SA/IPV-related distress and when alcohol use becomes problematic. Survivors identified that stigma and acknowledgment of alcohol misuse are individual-level barriers and facilitators to treatment. System-level factors were also described including having access to treatment and sensitive providers. VSPs also discussed individual (e.g., stigma) and system (e.g., availability and quality of services) level barriers and facilitators to treatment for alcohol misuse. We examined the associations between women's behavioral coping responses during sexual assault and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, and the moderating role of alexithymia in college women (N = 152). Immobilized responses (b = 0.52, p <.001), childhood SA (b = 0.18, p =.01), and alexithymia (b = 0.34, p <.001) significantly predicted PTSD. The interaction between immobilized responses and alexithymia was significant (b = 0.39, p =.002), indicating a stronger association for those higher in alexithymia. We investigated invasive group A Streptococcus epidemiology in Idaho, USA, during 2008-2019 using surveillance data, medical record review, and emm (M protein gene) typing results. Incidence increased from 1.04 to 4.76 cases/100,000 persons during 2008-2019. emm 1, 12, 28, 11, and 4 were the most common types, and 2 outbreaks were identified. We examined changes in distribution of clinical syndrome, patient demographics, and risk factors by comparing 2008-2013 baseline with 2014-2019 data. Incidence was higher among all age groups during 2014-2019. Streptococcal toxic shock syndrome increased from 0% to 6.4% of cases (p = 0.02). We identified no differences in distribution of demographic or risk factors between periods. Results indicated that invasive group A Streptococcus is increasing among the general population of Idaho. Ongoing surveillance of state-level invasive group A Streptococcus cases could help identify outbreaks, track regional trends in incidence, and monitor circulating emm types. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Military sexual trauma (MST), defined as sexual assault or repeated, threatening sexual harassment while in the military, is associated with increased risk of long-term mental and physical health problems, with the most common being symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression. In addition to PTSD and depression, MST is linked to difficulties in emotion regulation as well as poor treatment engagement. Thus, it is important to examine these correlates, and how they affect postintervention symptom reduction in this vulnerable population. The current study presents secondary data analyses from a randomized clinical trial comparing the efficacy of in-person versus telemedicine delivery of prolonged exposure therapy for female veterans with MST-related PTSD (n = 151). Results of the study found that changes in difficulties with emotion regulation predicted postintervention depressive symptoms but not postintervention PTSD symptoms. Neither postintervention depressive nor PTSD symptoms were affected by treatment dosing (i.e., number of sessions attended) nor treatment condition (i.e., in-person vs. telemedicine). Findings from the current study provide preliminary evidence that decreases in difficulties with emotion regulation during PTSD treatment are associated with decreases in depressive symptom severity. Sexual trauma is common and increases the risk for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), substance- use disorders (SUD), and depression among Veterans. Limited research has examined the impact of sexual harassment and assault during deployment on treatment outcomes among Veterans with co- occurring PTSD and SUD. The current study examined the frequency of exposure to sexual harassment and assault during deployment as a predictor of treatment outcomes among a primarily male sample of US military Veterans diagnosed with current PTSD and SUD. A secondary analysis was performed using data from a randomized clinical trial examining the efficacy of Concurrent Treatment of PTSD and Substance Use Disorders using Prolonged Exposure (COPE) compared to Relapse Prevention (RP). Data from 69 Veterans (91.3% male) who were deployed while in the service were analyzed using mixed models to determine whether frequency of exposure to sexual harassment and assault during deployment impacted changes in PTSD symptom severity, percent days using substances, and depressive symptoms during treatment. Over one-third of the sample (36.2%) reported exposure to sexual harassment and/or assault during deployment. Frequency of exposure to sexual harassment and assault during deployment was not a predictor of treatment outcome in any of the models, suggesting a similar response to treatment among those with varying frequency of exposure to sexual harassment and assault during deployment. Veterans with co-occurring PTSD and SUD who have been exposed to sexual harassment and assault during deployment may benefit from integrated trauma-focused treatments and treatments focused on decreasing SUD symptoms. Helium atoms evaporate from pure water and salty solutions in super-Maxwellian speed distributions, as observed experimentally and modeled theoretically. The experiments are performed by monitoring the velocities of dissolved He atoms that evaporate from microjets of pure water at 252 K and 4-8.5 molal LiCl and LiBr at 232-252 K. The average He atom energies exceed the flux-weighted Maxwell-Boltzmann average of 2RT by 30% for pure water and 70% for 8.5m LiBr. Classical molecular dynamics simulations closely reproduce the observed speed distributions and provide microscopic insight into the forces that eject the He atoms from solution. Comparisons of the density profile and He kinetic energies across the water-vacuum interface indicate that the He atoms are accelerated by He-water collisions within the top 1-2 layers of the liquid. We also find that the average He atom kinetic energy scales with the free energy of solvation of this sparingly soluble gas. This free-energy difference reflects the steeply decreasing potential of mean force on the He atoms in the interfacial region, whose gradient is the repulsive force that tends to expel the atoms. The accompanying sharp decrease in water density suppresses the He-water collisions that would otherwise maintain a Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution, allowing the He atom to escape at high energies. Sexual assault is a major public health concern associated with significant mental health and medical symptoms. Follow-up screening post-sexual assault medical forensic examination (SAMFE) can be one method of determining needs and providing targeted prevention of mental health and medical symptoms among individuals who experienced a recent sexual assault. However, the factors associated with engagement in post-SAMFE follow-up screening have not been identified. The current study examined the association between intimate partner violence victimization and sexual assault–related characteristics and engagement in post-SAMFE follow-up screening. Participants were 193 individuals who received a SAMFE and indicated at the time of SAMFE that they were interested in follow-up by the hospital. It was found that individuals were less likely to engage in follow-up screening if the assault was perpetrated by an intimate partner. These findings suggest that other resources are needed to reach individuals who experience sexual assault perpetrated by an intimate partner due to the unique needs of that population. Abstract Background For a regional project in four low-incidence states, we designed a customizable tuberculosis outbreak response plan. Prior to dissemination of the plan, a tuberculosis outbreak occurred, presenting an opportunity to perform a field assessment of the plan. The purpose of the assessment was to ensure that the plan included essential elements to help public health professionals recognize and respond to outbreaks. Methods We designed a semi-structured questionnaire and interviewed all key stakeholders involved in the response. We used common themes to assess validity of and identify gaps in the plan. A subset of participants provided structured feedback on the plan. Results We interviewed 11 public health and six community stakeholders. The assessment demonstrated that (1) almost all of the main response activities were reflected in the plan; (2) the plan added value by providing a definition of a tuberculosis outbreak and guidelines for communication and evaluation. These were areas that lacked written protocols during the actual outbreak response; and (3) basic education about tuberculosis and the interpretation and use of genotyping data were important needs. Stakeholders also suggested adding to the plan questions for evaluation and a section for specific steps to take when an outbreak is suspected. Conclusion An interactive field assessment of a programmatic tool revealed the value of a systematic outbreak response plan with a standard definition of a tuberculosis outbreak, guidelines for communication and evaluation, and response steps. The assessment highlighted the importance of education and training for tuberculosis in low-incidence areas.

Sexual abuse prior to age 18 may put some women at risk for engaging in sexual risk taking. This association could exist, in part, as a result of the impact of posttraumatic stress symptoms on behavioral regulation. The current study utilized a path analysis to investigate the association between severity of sexual abuse before age 18, posttraumatic stress symptoms, poor behavioral regulation, and expected engagement in sexual risk taking among college women. The sample consisted of 88 college women with experiences of sexual abuse prior to the age of 18. Severity of sexual abuse predicted posttraumatic stress symptoms. In addition, posttraumatic stress symptoms predicted poor behavioral regulation, which in turn predicted expected engagement in sexual risk taking. These findings indicate functional mechanisms involved in sexual decision making of women who have had past sexual abuse and experience posttraumatic stress symptoms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sexual assault is a common traumatic experience that can have a wide-ranging impact on psychological functioning, including experience of depressive symptoms. Although many studies have examined lifetime rates of depression among those with sexual assault history, less is known regarding risk factors for depressive symptoms following recent sexual assault. The study examined whether drug use history is uniquely related to depressive symptoms following recent assault. N = 65 individuals, 95.4% female; 73.8% White; M (SD)age = 28.89 (10.29), who had recently experienced sexual assault (less than 60 days) and completed a SAMFE (sexual assault medical forensic examination) were interviewed via phone and completed questionnaires regarding depressive and acute/post-traumatic stress symptoms and substance use history. Demographic information as well as information related to the assault was also collected. 68.7% of the sample reported clinically significant levels of depressive symptoms (PHQ-9, Patient Health Questionnaire, scores ⩾ 12). In a linear regression adjusted for acute/post-traumatic stress (b = 0.26, p <.01) and other variables, polydrug use was significantly associated with depressive symptoms (b = 3.26, p =.04). Single-drug use (b = 0.96), physically forced sexual assault (b = −1.11), victim–perpetrator relationship (b = 0.15), prior sexual assault (b = −1.02), alcohol misuse (b = −0.09), age (b = 0.07), race (b = 2.78), and days since assault (b = −0.02) were not significantly associated with depressive symptoms (all p s >.05). Blaine County, Idaho, a rural area with a renowned resort, experienced a COVID-19 outbreak early in the pandemic. We undertook an epidemiologic investigation to describe the outbreak and guide public health action. Confirmed cases of COVID-19 were identified from reports of SARS-CoV-2-positive laboratory test results to South Central Public Health District. Information on symptoms, hospitalization, recent travel, healthcare worker status, and close contacts was obtained by medical record review and patient interviews. Viral sequence analysis was conducted on a subset of available specimens. During March 13–April 10, 2020, a total of 451 COVID-19 cases among Blaine County residents (1,959 cases per 100,000 population) were reported, with earliest illness onset March 1. The median patient age was 51 years (interquartile range [IQR]: 37–63), 52 (11.5%) were hospitalized, and 5 (1.1%) died. The median duration between specimen collection and a positive laboratory result was 9 days (IQR: 4–10). Forty-four (9.8%) patients reported recent travel and an additional 37 cases occurred in out-of-state residents. Healthcare workers comprised 56 (12.4%) cases; 33 of whom worked at the only hospital in the county, leading to a 15-day disruption of hospital services. Among 562 close contacts monitored by public health authorities, laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 or compatible symptoms were identified in 51 (9.1%). Sequencing results from 34 specimens supported epidemiologic findings indicating travel as a source of SARS-CoV-2, and identified multiple lineages among hospital workers. Community mitigation strategies included school and resort closure, stay-at-home orders, and restrictions on incoming travelers. COVID-19 outbreaks in rural communities can disrupt health services. Lack of local laboratory capacity led to long turnaround times for COVID-19 test results. Rural communities frequented by tourists face unique challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. Exposure to traumatic events and emotion regulation were examined as predictors of posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) among women seeking medical treatment for infertility. Emotion regulation difficulties were hypothesized to moderate the association between traumatic events and PTSS severity. Sixty-six participants completed the Trauma History Questionnaire, Posttraumatic Check List for DSM-5, and Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale. Regression analyses were conducted. Emotion regulation difficulties predicted PTSS. The interaction between lifetime exposure to traumatic events and emotion regulation significantly predicted PTSS (b = 0.02, p = 0.002) and the model accounted for 31% of the variance in symptoms. Among women pursuing medical fertility treatment with past exposure to traumatic events, brief interventions that enhance emotional regulation skills may decrease PTSS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Military veterans with histories of military sexual trauma (MST) are at risk for several negative mental health outcomes and report perceived barriers to treatment engagement. To inform interventions to promote gender‐sensitive access to MST‐related care, we conducted an exploratory, multiple‐group latent class analysis of negative beliefs about MST‐related care. Participants were U.S. veterans (N = 1,185) who screened positive for MST within the last 2 months and reported a perceived need for MST‐related treatment. Associations between class membership, mental health screenings, logistical barriers, difficulty accessing care, and unmet need for MST‐related care were also examined. Results indicated a four‐class solution, with classes categorized as (a) low barrier, with few negative beliefs; (b) high barrier, with pervasive negative beliefs; (c) stigma‐related beliefs; and (d) negative perceptions of care (NPC). Men were significantly less likely than women to fall into the low barrier class (27.9% vs. 34.5%). Relative to participants in the low barrier class, individuals in all other classes reported more scheduling, ps <.001; transportation, p <.001 to p =.014; and work‐related barriers, p <.001 to p =.031. Participants in the NPC class reported the most difficulty with access, p <.001, and those in the NPC and high barrier classes were more likely to report unmet needs compared to other classes, ps <.001. Brief cognitive and behavioral interventions, delivered in primary care settings and via telehealth, tailored to address veterans' negative mental health beliefs may increase the utilization of mental health treatment related to MST. We describe the use of a polished, hollow cylindrical nickel single crystal to study effects of step edges on adsorption and desorption of gas phase molecules. The crystal is held in an ultra-high vacuum apparatus by a crystal holder that provides axial rotation about a [100] direction, and a crystal temperature range of 89 to 1100 K. A microchannel plate-based low energy electron diffraction/retarding field Auger electron spectrometer (AES) apparatus identifies surface structures present on the outer surface of the cylinder, while a separate double pass cylindrical mirror analyzer AES verifies surface cleanliness. A supersonic molecular beam, skimmed by a rectangular slot, impinges molecules on a narrow longitudinal strip of the surface. Here, we use the King and Wells technique to demonstrate how surface structure influences the dissociation probability of deuterium at various kinetic energies. Finally, we introduce spatially-resolved temperature programmed desorption from areas exposed to the supersonic molecular beam to show how surface structures influence desorption features. On December 19, 2019, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved rVSVΔG-ZEBOV-GP Ebola vaccine (ERVEBO, Merck) for the prevention of Ebola virus disease (EVD) caused by infection with Ebola virus, species Zaire ebolavirus, in adults aged ≥18 years. In February 2020, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommended preexposure vaccination with ERVEBO for adults aged ≥18 years in the United States who are at highest risk for potential occupational exposure to Ebola virus because they are responding to an outbreak of EVD, work as health care personnel at federally designated Ebola treatment centers in the United States, or work as laboratorians or other staff members at biosafety level 4 facilities in the United States (1). • We investigated a cluster of Achromobacter xylosoxidans among residents on chronic ventilator support in a long-term–care facility. • Environmental contamination of multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria was detected on ventilator accessories and in a shared shower facility. • Whole-genome sequencing linked a clinical isolate of multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa to environmental contamination at the facility. • To reduce transmission of water-associated multidrug-resistant bacteria in long-term–care facilities, precautionary measures should include a water management program and daily cleaning and disinfection of showers, sinks, and drains. A cluster of Achromobacter xylosoxidans, an emerging multidrug-resistant aquaphilic bacterium, was identified in 3 long-term–care facility residents. As Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Serratia marcescens were also present in clinical specimens, we conducted an investigation of all 3 water-associated species and identified P. aerguniosa and S. marcescens contamination at the facility. Sequencing analysis linked P. aeruginosa to a clinical isolate. Rape myth acceptance (RMA), perceived barriers, and self-efficacy were examined as predictors of likelihood to report different types of rape to law enforcement among 409 undergraduates. Participants had lower likelihood to report incapacitated compared to physically forced rape. Men had lower reporting likelihood than women for rape perpetrated by the same and opposite sex and were more likely to perceive several barriers. RMA and perceived barriers predicted a lower likelihood to report several types of rape. Among men, higher self-efficacy predicted increased reporting likelihood. Targeting RMA and decreasing perceived barriers is imperative to increase college students' likelihood to report rape to local and campus law enforcement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the early aftermath of a sexual assault, survivors often experience symptoms of distress including reexperiencing, avoidance, and hyperarousal symptoms. However, less is known about associations between rape characteristics and the nature of early reactions. We designed the current study to examine the unique and combined associations between use of force and substances during rape on acute stress symptoms. Participants were 56 women (ages 18–58) who completed a sexual assault medical forensic exam in the emergency department within 120 hours of the rape and then completed a follow-up clinical phone screening within 30 days of the forensic exam. Follow-up assessments included characteristics of the recent rape (force, substances), history of prior sexual assault, demographics, and symptoms of acute stress. Multivariate regression analyses revealed that, after controlling for prior sexual assault, sexual orientation, and race/ethnicity, there were no significant differences on any symptom cluster by rape type. However, this study involved a small, difficult-to-reach sample and, therefore, was only powered to detect large effect sizes. Background Mycobacterium abscessus , an emerging pathogen in healthcare settings, has rarely been associated with community outbreaks. During February–May 2013, Idaho public health officials and pediatric infectious disease physicians investigated an outbreak of M abscessus skin infections in children whose only common exposure was an indoor wading pool. Methods Healthcare providers and parents reported possible M abscessus cases. We used a standardized questionnaire to interview parents of affected children. Clinical specimens were submitted for mycobacterial examination. We conducted an environmental investigation of the pool. Microbial isolates from clinical and environmental samples were identified by sequencing polymerase chain reaction amplicons and underwent pulsed-field gel electrophoresis. Results Twelve cases were identified. Specimens from 4 of 7 children grew M abscessus or Mycobacterium abscessus/Mycobacterium chelonae. Ten (83%) of 12 children were female; median age was 3 years (range, 2 to 6 years); and all were immunocompetent. Pool maintenance did not fully comply with Idaho state rules governing pool operation. Mycobacterium abscessus / chelonae was isolated from pool equipment. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis composite patterns were 87% similar between isolates from the pool ladder and 1 patient, and they were 90% similar between isolates from 2 patients. Environmental remediation included hyperchlorination, scrubbing and disinfection of pool surfaces, draining the pool, and replacement of worn pool materials. Conclusions Immunocompetent children acquired M abscessus cutaneous infection involving hands and feet after exposure to a wading pool. Environmental remediation and proper pool maintenance likely halted transmission. Medical and public health professionals' collaboration effectively detected and controlled an outbreak caused by an emerging recreational waterborne pathogen. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the association between the type of sexual assault (intoxicated vs. non-intoxicated) and post-assault avoidance on post-assault alcohol misuse among people who experienced a recent sexual assault.Method: The sample included 72 adults aged 18-58 who completed a follow-up phone screen within 30 days of completing a sexual assault medical forensic examination. Participants reported demographics, prior sexual assault, if they were intoxicated from alcohol or other drugs during the sexual assault that preceded receipt of a sexual assault medical forensic examination, post-assault avoidance symptoms, and post-assault alcohol misuse.Results: Post-assault alcohol misuse was higher among participants with intoxicated (vs. non-intoxicated) sexual assault, prior sexual assault (vs. none), and who identified as White. There was a significant interaction between the type of sexual assault and avoidance symptoms on post-assault alcohol misuse. There was a significant association between avoidance symptoms and alcohol misuse (b = 0.82, p = .003) among participants who experienced a non-intoxicated sexual assault, but not among those who reported intoxication during the recent sexual assault (b = -0.33, p = .468).Conclusions: Intoxicated sexual assault and post-assault avoidance may be influential factors contributing to post-assault alcohol misuse among people who are recently sexually assaulted. Introduction: Sexual assault (SA) is common, and recent sexual assault is associated with suicidal ideation and prescription opioid (PO) use. PO use is also associated with increased risk of suicidal ideation. The current study examined suicidal ideation among adults seeking medical and psychological follow-up care after a SA medical forensic examination based on PO use and prior SA.Methods: Adults (n = 60) who received a SA medical forensic exam at the emergency room within 120 h of a SA were invited to receive medical and psychological follow-up care, which included a questionnaire about current mental health symptoms.Results: Results from a linear regression model revealed that more acute stress symptoms were associated with higher suicidal ideation. Further, there was a significant association between PO use and suicidal ideation among those with a prior SA such that those with a prior SA and who used POs reported more severe suicidal ideation than those with a prior SA who did not use POs.Conclusions: Routine screening at the emergency department for PO use and prior SA may help prevention efforts for suicide among adults who recently experienced SA.
