The reduction of hyperinflation enhances ventilatory mechanics and diaphragm function. Understanding predictors for treatment success is crucial for further improvements.Purpose: The aim of this study was to assess the effect of the target lobe volume reduction (TLVR) in relation to the ipsilateral lung volume reduction (ILVR), affected by the compensatory expansion of the adjacent lobe, on the outcome after BLVR with valves.Patients and Methods: The volumetric relationship of ILVR% to TLVR%, addressed as Reduction Ratio (R), was recorded in 82 patients and compared to changes in lung function, physical performance and quality of life. A small value for R implies a relatively low volume reduction of the ipsilateral lung (ILVR) compared to the volume reduction of the target lobe (TLVR). Additionally, the minimal clinically important difference (MCID) for R was calculated.Results: Patients with a smaller Reduction Ratio (R < 0.2) showed minor improvements at the 3 months follow-up compared to patients with R ≥ 0.2 (mean changes of 39 mL (5.8%), – 395 mL (– 4.9%) and 96 mL (7.1%) versus 231 mL (33%), – 1235 mL (– 20%) and 425 mL (29%) in the forced expiratory volume in 1s (FEV1), residual volume (RV) and inspiratory vital capacity (IVC), respectively, and – 3 m and 0 points versus 20.4 m and – 3.4 points in the 6-minute-walking-distance (6MWD) and COPD assessment test (CAT) score respectively). With a combined value of 0.185, a MCID for R was calculated with established anchors (FEV1, RV, and 6MWD) for emphysema patients.Conclusion: Extensive compensatory hyperinflation of the adjacent non-treated lobe after BLVR results in decreased ILVR, which is responsible for a lack of meaningful improvements in ventilatory mechanics and clinical outcome, despite technically successful lobe volume reduction.Keywords: emphysema, ipsilateral lung volume, reduction ratio, volume shift

The forthcoming Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) satellite mission will provide global measurements of the free surface of large rivers, providing new opportunities for remote sensing‐derived estimates of river discharge in gaged and ungaged basins. SWOT discharge algorithms have been developed and benchmarked using synthetic data but remain untested on real‐world swath altimetry observations. We present the first discharge estimates from AirSWOT, a SWOT‐like airborne Ka‐band radar, using 6 days of measurements over a 40‐km segment of the Willamette River in Oregon, USA. The three evaluated discharge algorithms estimated discharge with normalized root‐mean‐square errors of 10–31% when compared with in situ gage data but were sensitive to an initial estimate of mean annual discharge. Our results show that these discharge algorithms provide reliable discharge estimates on remotely sensed data at SWOT‐like spatial scales while highlighting the need for further algorithm sensitivity tests. In 2021, the Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) mission will be launched to collect high‐accuracy measurements of the world's surface waters, including all global rivers wider than 100 m. In anticipation of SWOT, methods to estimate discharge from its measurements have been developed but have yet to be tested on real‐world data at the spatial scales and accuracies expected of SWOT. We test three such discharge algorithms on data collected by AirSWOT, an airborne variant of SWOT, as it flew over the Willamette River in Oregon, USA. We show that river discharge can be estimated by these algorithms with encouraging accuracy (10–31%) using only airborne measurements and a model‐derived estimate of the mean annual discharge. We stress the need for further testing of these algorithms to determine their sensitivities to the initial estimate of flow and the hydraulic character of the river reach but suggest that these results are encouraging for future global‐scale deployment of SWOT discharge algorithms. The forthcoming Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) NASA satellite mission will measure water surface width, height, and slope of major rivers worldwide. The resulting data could provide an unprecedented account of river discharge at continental scales, but reliable methods need to be identified prior to launch. Here we present a novel algorithm for discharge estimation from only remotely sensed stream width, slope, and height at multiple locations along a mass-conserved river segment. The algorithm, termed the Bayesian AMHG-Manning (BAM) algorithm, implements a Bayesian formulation of streamflow uncertainty using a combination of Manning's equation and at-many-stations hydraulic geometry (AMHG). Bayesian methods provide a statistically defensible approach to generating discharge estimates in a physically underconstrained system but rely on prior distributions that quantify the a priori uncertainty of unknown quantities including discharge and hydraulic equation parameters. These were obtained from literature-reported values and from a USGS data set of acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) measurements at USGS stream gauges. A data set of simulated widths, slopes, and heights from 19 rivers was used to evaluate the algorithms using a set of performance metrics. Results across the 19 rivers indicate an improvement in performance of BAM over previously tested methods and highlight a path forward in solving discharge estimation using solely satellite remote sensing. The acclimation to osmotic and/or salt stress conditions induces an integrated response at different cellular levels. One acclimation strategy relies on the massive accumulation of low molecular mass compounds, so-called compatible solutes, to balance osmotic gradients and to directly protect critical macromolecules. Heterosides are compounds composed of a sugar and a polyol moiety that represent one chemical class of compatible solutes with interesting features. Well-investigated examples are glucosylglycerol, which is found in many cyanobacteria, and galactosylglycerols (floridoside and isofloridoside), which are accumulated by eukaryotic algae under salt stress conditions. Here, we review knowledge on physiology, biochemistry and genetics of heteroside accumulation in pro- and eukaryotic photoautotrophic organisms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Oxygenic photosynthesis would not be possible without photorespiration in the present day O2-rich atmosphere. It is now generally accepted that cyanobacteria-like prokaryotes first evolved oxygenic photosynthesis, which was later conveyed via endosymbiosis into a eukaryotic host, which then gave rise to the different groups of algae and streptophytes. For photosynthetic CO2 fixation, all these organisms use Rubis CO, which catalyses both the carboxylation and the oxygenation of ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate. One of the reaction products of the oxygenase reaction, 2-phosphoglycolate (2 PG), represents the starting point of the photorespiratory C2 cycle, which is considered largely responsible for recapturing organic carbon via conversion to the Calvin-Benson cycle ( CBC) intermediate 3-phosphoglycerate, thereby detoxifying critical intermediates. Here we discuss possible scenarios for the evolution of this process toward the well-defined 2 PG metabolism in extant plants. While the origin of the C2 cycle core enzymes can be clearly dated back towards the different endosymbiotic events, the evolutionary scenario that allowed the compartmentalised high flux photorespiratory cycle is uncertain, but probably occurred early during the algal radiation. The change in atmospheric CO2/ O2 ratios promoting the acquisition of different modes for inorganic carbon concentration mechanisms, as well as the evolutionary specialisation of peroxisomes, clearly had a dramatic impact on further aspects of land plant photorespiration. In the present-day O2-rich atmosphere, the photorespiratory pathway is essential for organisms performing oxygenic photosynthesis; i.e. cyanobacteria, algae and land plants. The presence of enzymes for the plant-like 2-phosphoglycolate cycle in cyanobacteria indicates that, together with oxygenic photosynthesis, genes for photorespiratory enzymes were endosymbiotically conveyed from ancient cyanobacteria to photosynthetic eukaryotes. The genome information for Cyanophora paradoxa, a member of the Glaucophyta representing the first branching group of primary endosymbionts, and for many other eukaryotic algae was used to shed light on the evolutionary relationship of photorespiratory enzymes among oxygenic phototrophs. For example, it became possible to analyse the phylogenies of 2-phosphoglycolate phosphatase, serine:glyoxylate aminotransferase and hydroxypyruvate reductase. Analysis of the Cyanophora genome provided clear evidence that some photorespiratory enzymes originally acquired from cyanobacteria were lost, e.g. glycerate 3-kinase, while others were replaced by the corresponding enzymes from the α-proteobacterial endosymbiont, e.g. serine:glyoxylate aminotransferase. Generally, our analysis supports the view that many C2 cycle enzymes in eukaryotic phototrophs were obtained from the cyanobacterial endosymbiont, but during the subsequent evolution of algae and land plants multiple losses and replacements occurred, which resulted in a reticulate provenance of photorespiratory enzymes with different origins in different cellular compartments. Being intimately intertwined with ( C3) photosynthesis, photorespiration is an incredibly high flux-bearing pathway. Traditionally, the photorespiratory cycle was viewed as closed pathway to refill the Calvin- Benson cycle with organic carbon. However, given the network nature of metabolism, it hence follows that photorespiration will interact with many other pathways. In this article, we review current understanding of these interactions and attempt to define key priorities for future research, which will allow us greater fundamental comprehension of general metabolic and developmental consequences of perturbation of this crucial metabolic process. Spin–isospin excitations of the medium-mass nucleus 58Co were studied using the (n,p)-type (d,2He) charge-exchange reaction at an incident energy Ed=170 MeV and small scattering angles. The achieved energy resolution of 130 keV, full width at half maximum, allowed the extraction of Gamow–Teller strength to 13 peaks at excitation energies lower than 4.1 MeV in the residual nucleus 58Co and is consistent with the results of a multipole-decomposition analysis. The identification of Gamow–Teller transitions is possible by comparison of the measured cross sections with DWBA calculations. The results are used to discuss the relevance of the Gamow–Teller strength distribution at low excitation energy with regard to electron-capture rates used in calculations for the final stage of a massive star. The role of putative Na+/H+ antiporters encoded by nhaS1 ( slr1727), nhaS3 ( sll0689), nhaS4 ( slr1595), and nhaS5 ( slr0415) in salt stress response and internal pH regulation of the cyanobacterium Synechocystis PCC 6803 was investigated. For this purpose the mutants (single, double, and triple) impaired in genes coding for Na+/H+ antiporters were constructed using the method of interposon mutagenesis. PCR analyses of DNA demonstrated that mutations in nhaS1, nhaS4, and nhaS5 genes were segregated completely and the mutants contained only inactivated copies of the corresponding genes. Na+/H+ antiporter encoded by nhaS3 was essential for viability of Synechocystis since no completely segregated mutants were obtained. The steady-state intracellular sodium concentration and Na+/H+ antiporter activities were found to be the same in the wild type and all mutants. No differences were found in the growth rates of wild type and mutants during their cultivation in liquid media supplemented with 0.68 M or 0.85 M NaCl as well as in media buffered at pH 7.0, 8.0, or 9.0. The expression of genes coding for Na+/H+ antiporters was studied. No induction of any Na+/H+ antiporter encoding gene expression was found in wild type or single mutant cells grown under high salt or at different pH values. Nevertheless, in cells of double and triple mutants adapted to high salt or alkaline pH some of the remaining Na+/H+ antiporter encoding genes showed induction. These results might indicate that some of Na+/H+ antiporters can functionally replace each other under stress conditions in Synechocystis cells lacking the activity of more than one antiporter. A mutant of Synechocystis sp. strain PCC6803 was obtained by random cartridge mutagenesis, which could not grow at low sodium concentrations. Genetic analyses revealed that partial deletion of the sll0273 gene, encoding a putative Na[sup +]/H[sup +] exchanger, was responsible for this defect. Physiological characterization indicated that the sll0273 mutant exhibited an increased sensitivity towards K[sup +], even at low concentrations, which was compensated for by enhanced concentrations of Na[sup +]. This enhanced Na[sup +] demand could also be met by Li[sup +]. Furthermore, addition of monensin, an ionophore mediating electroneutral Na[sup +]/H[sup +] exchange, supported growth of the mutant at unfavourable Na[sup +]/K[sup +] ratios. Measurement of internal Na[sup +] and K[sup +] contents of wild-type and mutant cells revealed a decreased Na[sup +]/K[sup +] ratio in mutant cells pre-incubated at a low external Na[sup +]/K[sup +], while it remained at the level of the wild type after pre-incubation at a high external Na[sup +]K/[sup +] ratio. We conclude that the S110273 protein is required for Na[sup +] influx, especially at low external Na[sup +] concentrations or low Na[sup +]/K[sup +] ratios. This system may be part of a sodium cycle and may permit re-entry of Na[sup +] into the cells, if nutrient/Na[sup +] symporters are not functional or operating. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Marine picocyanobacteria of the genera Prochlorococcus and Synechococcus numerically dominate the picophytoplankton of the world ocean, making a key contribution to global primaly production. Prochiorococcus was isolated around 20 years ago and is probably the most abundant photosynthetic organism on Earth. The genus comprises specific ecolypes which are phylogenetically distinct and differ markedly in their photophysiology, allowing growth over a broad range of light and nutrient conditions within the 45°N to 40°S latitudinal belt that they occupy. Synechococcus and Prochlorococcus are closely related, together forming a discrete picophytoplankton dade, but are distinguishable by their possession of dissimilar light- harvesting apparatuses and differences in cell size and elemental composition. Synechococcus strains have a ubiquitous oceanic distribution compared to that of Prochlorococcus strains and are characterized byphylogenetically discrete lineages with a wide range ofpigmentation. in this review, we put our current knowledge of marine picocyanobacterial genomics into an environmental context and present previously unpublished genomic information arising from extensive genonhic comparisons in order to provide insights into the adaptations of these marine microbes to their environment and how they are reflected at the genomic level.
