This paper is about "augmented reality" (AR) and its potentials to support students in handling scientific representations. For this purpose, first representations are examined from a science educational and instructional psychology perspective. After giving a short overview of AR in general and how it can be delineated from "virtual reality" (VR), potential advantages of an educational use of AR are outlined considering typical difficulties of students when learning with scientific representations. Since literature frequently reports sex differences in spatial abilities, this study focuses on potential differential effects in the use of AR depending on sex. Against this background, AR might be a tool which can help to compensate for disadvantages in spatial abilities. In order to investigate this question, chemistry students had to answer 20 items related to stereochemistry, a concept that places high demands on mental spatial rotation skills. While one half of the items had to be solved using two-dimensional (2D) "ball-and-stick" figures of molecules, the other half had to be answered with the help of AR representations. Due to the aforementioned sex differences regarding visuo-spatial abilities between males and females found in the literature, it is hypothesized that AR representations will support all students but females in particular by reducing cognitive load. If this assumption is correct, the AR items would have to be correctly solved by the students more often than the 2D items. The results of analyses of variance indeed reveal a significant effect of the sex variable dependent on the type of representation. In addition, a questionnaire was administered to survey the students' attitudes towards learning with the AR app used.

Preparatory or bridging courses are widespread and have a long tradition at universities. They are designed to increase students' academic success -- in particular of students with low prior knowledge -- and to reduce dropout rates. However, critics of these short and compact bridging courses complain that preparatory courses are not able to fill in content gaps sufficiently in a few weeks. Despite the high prevalence of university bridging courses, little is currently known about the sustainable learning efficacy of these courses. The aim of this study was to examine the short- and long-term effects of a traditional chemistry bridging course on students' success in the end of the semester examination of first-year chemistry students. For this purpose, students' learning outcomes were analyzed at the end of the two-week bridging course of students with different prior knowledge. Furthermore, it was investigated in an intervention-reference-group design whether students' exam results at the end of the first semester differ from participants of the bridging course and students who did not participate in the course. The results of the study reveal that students with low prior knowledge manage to close their content gaps in just a few weeks and to adjust differences in prior knowledge before starting their studies. At the end of the first semester, bridging course participants achieve significantly better exam results than their fellow students who did not enroll in the bridging course. However, mainly students with high prior knowledge seem to benefit from participating in the longer term. In the case of students with low prior knowledge, participation do not lead to better exam results compared to students without participation. Findings of the study can provide a basis for university teachers as well as university development experts to establish university bridging courses as well as to optimize existing offers.

The article discusses the KOALa student lab program, which aims to raise awareness about ocean acidification and promote responsible resource management. The program uses a mystery-based approach to engage students in scientific inquiry and includes a model experiment to explore the effects of burning fossil fuels on ocean chemistry. The article provides insights into the program's methodology, concept, and implementation, as well as initial findings from accompanying research. The goal is to provide practical suggestions for teachers to incorporate the topic of ocean acidification into their lessons using the mystery method and experiment-based ocean design proposals. The text also describes a model experiment that investigates the direct impact of combustion reactions in the atmosphere on ocean water and the resulting pH change. The experiment involves the use of beakers filled with water and a pH indicator, as well as the combustion of candles and the use of an aquarium pump. The results of the experiment demonstrate the decrease in pH and the color change of the solution, simulating the effects of increased carbon dioxide emissions on ocean acidification. The text also discusses the limitations of the model experiment and the importance of integrating visits to science laboratories into classroom instruction to promote student interest in STEM subjects. Many studies in science education acknowledge the positive effects of context-based learning on students' interest and attitudes. However, little is known about the design criteria of contextual situations generating these effects and how facets of students' situational interest are affected while learning in a contextualised setting. This paper ties in with this initial situation and reports results of two projects analysing the influence of context characteristics on students' situational interest, referring to contexts as task parameters in the first project and as learning activities in the second. In the first project, everyday related and unique contexts are compared, and the effects of different contextual topics on student learning are investigated. Particularly, regarding the feeling- and value-related valence of situational interest, the results of different studies will be compared and interpreted. The second project investigated structures of interest related to activities along an adapted version of the 'RIASEC'-model for different content areas and age groups. The chosen contents were embedded in personal as well as societal and professional context settings. Finally, we summarise the relevance of the different models, results and instruments to better understand different notions of interest and outline implications for further studies about teaching that improves student learning.

Chemical phenomena are only observable on a macroscopic level, whereas they are explained by entities on a non-visible level. Students often demonstrate limited ability to link these different levels. Augmented reality (AR) offers the possibility to increase contiguity by embedding virtual models into hands-on experiments. Therefore, this paper presents a pre- and post-test study investigating how learning and cognitive load are influenced by AR during hands-on experiments. Three comparison groups (AR, animation and filmstrip), with a total of N = 104 German secondary school students, conducted and explained two hands-on experiments. Whereas the AR group was allowed to use an AR app showing virtual models of the processes on the submicroscopic level during the experiments, the two other groups were provided with the same dynamic or static models after experimenting. Results indicate no significant learning gain for the AR group in contrast to the two other groups. The perceived intrinsic cognitive load was higher for the AR group in both experiments as well as the extraneous load in the second experiment. An introduction to articles published within the issue is presented, including one on augmented reality (AR)-based learning in the context of history education, another on the use of AR to support students' learning, and one on the effects of AR-supported learning in STEM laboratory courses.

This paper presents a study about augmented-reality-based chemistry learning in a university lecture. Organic chemistry is often perceived as particularly difficult by students because spatial information must be processed in order to understand subject specific concepts and key ideas. To understand typical chemistry-related representations in books or literature, sophisticated mental rotation- and other spatial abilities are needed. Providing an augmented reality (AR) based learning support in the learning setting together with text and pictures is consistent with the idea of multiple external representations and the cognitive theory of multimedia learning. Using multiple external representations has proven to be beneficial for learning success, because different types of representations are processed separately in working memory. Nevertheless, the integration of a new learning medium involves the risk to hinder learning, in case of being not suitable for the learning topic or learning purpose. Therefore, this study investigates how the AR-use affects students' cognitive load during learning in three different topics of organic chemistry. For this purpose also the usability of AR learning support is considered and the possible reduction of the influence of the mental rotation on learning success will be investigated.
