The Easter mantle plume has produced one of the longest hotspot tracks in the Pacific Ocean. While previous studies have focused on the eastern side extending across the Nazca Plate, we use 40Ar/39Ar isotopic and geochemical data to investigate the less explored western side around the Easter Microplate. We propose a dynamic model in which a deeper (600 km-depth), less buoyant mantle exerts a westward force on the East Pacific Rise (EPR), while a more buoyant plume region drives Easter hotspot volcanism and a localised acceleration in seafloor spreading. Our findings suggest that the Easter hotspot is the more focused surface expression of the most buoyant region of a vast, deep-seated mantle plume extending from the Pacific Large Low Shear Velocity Province (LLSVP). This challenges the traditional view of hotspots as isolated phenomena and suggests they are part of broader LLSVP-related mantle structures. Our results imply a more intricate, large-scale relationship between hotspots, mantle plumes, spreading ridges, and mantle dynamics. Examination of the Easter hotspot reveals it as part of a vast, deep-seated mantle system, influencing seafloor spreading and shaping the Pacific Ocean, which challenges the view of hotspots as isolated volcanic centres. The intersection of the Foundation Plume with the Pacific-Antarctic Ridge is a key location in global geodynamics where a mantle plume is approached by and interacting with a fast-spreading mid-ocean ridge. Here, we discuss a comprehensive major and trace element and Sr-Nd-Pb isotope dataset of new and existing samples from the young Foundation Seamount Chain (<5 Ma) and adjacent section of the Pacific-Antarctic Ridge. We use the geochemistry of axial, off-axis and intraplate lavas to map the spatial extent of plume dispersal underneath the ridge as well as the internal zonation of the upwelling plume. We show that the unusual length, increased crustal thickness and occurrence of silicic rocks on the axis of the Foundation Segment are the direct result of plume being tapped by the axial melting zone. We demonstrate that the plume is not homogeneous but shows a HIMU-like (high time-integrated [sup 238]U/[sup 204]Pb) OIB (Ocean Island Basalt) component characterized by [sup 206]Pb/[sup 204]Pb of up to 20.5 in its center and a more EM1-like (Enriched Mantle one) OIB component characterized by low U/Pb and [sup 206]Pb/[sup 204]Pb but high Rb/Nb and [sup 87]Sr/[sup 86]Sr towards its edges. Plume entrainment leads to a high magma supply rate that fosters the formation of silicic rocks and triggers the lengthening of the segment over time. However, plume dispersal is not symmetric as the geochemical tracers for the OIB component are extending <100 km northwards but >300 km southwards. We relate this to the current plate tectonic framework in which the obliquity between the migrating ridge and the absolute plate motions induces a sub-axial asthenospheric flow that preferentially channels plume material southwards. The effects of the composition and angle of the subducting slab and mantle wedge flow on tectonic and magmatic processes in island arcs and associated back-arcs are poorly understood. Here we analyse the ages and compositions of submarine lavas from the flanks and the floor of the back-arc Futuna Trough some 50 km east of Tanna Island in the New Hebrides arc front. Whereas >2.5 Ma-old back-arc lavas formed from an enriched mantle source strongly metasomatized by a slab component, the younger lavas show less slab input into a depleted mantle wedge. The input of the slab component decreased over the past 2.5 million years while the enriched mantle was replaced by depleted peridotite. The change of Futuna Trough lava compositions indicates rapid (10 s of km/million years) replacement of the mantle wedge by corner flow and slab steepening due to rollback, causing extensional stress and back-arc rifting in the past 2.5 million years. A compositional change in lavas from the Futuna trough at 2.5 Ma suggest a change in mantle source, attributed to slab rollback and the opening of the back-arc basin. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The islands of the Azores archipelago emerge from an oceanic plateau built on lithosphere increasing in age with distance from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge from 10 to 45 Ma. Here, we present the first comprehensive major and trace element and Sr-Nd-Pb isotope data from Santa Maria, the easternmost island of the archipelago, along with published data from the other Azores islands situated much closer to the Mid-Atlantic Ridge axis. We can show that the distinctively more variable and more enriched trace element ratios at Santa Maria combined with a relatively small range in Sr-Nd-Pb isotope ratios are the result of low degrees of partial melting of a common Azores mantle plume source underneath thicker lithosphere. This implies that melt extraction processes and melting dynamics may be able to better preserve the trace element mantle source variability underneath thicker lithosphere. These conclusions may apply widely for oceanic melts erupted on relatively thick lithosphere. In addition, lower Ti/Sm and K/La ratios and Si[O.sub.2] contents of Santa Maria lavas imply melting of a carbonated peridotite source. Mixing of variable portions of deep small-degree carbonated peridotite melts and shallow volatile-free garnet peridotite could explain the geochemical variability underneath Santa Maria in agreement with the volatile-rich nature of the Azores mantle source. However, Santa Maria is the Azores island where the C[O.sub.2]-rich nature of the mantle source is more evident, reflecting a combination of a smaller extent of partial melting and the positioning at the edge of the tilted Azores mantle plume. Hydrothermal circulation at slow-spreading ridges is important for cooling the newly formed lithosphere, but the depth to which it occurs is uncertain. Magmas which stagnate and partially crystallize during their rise from the mantle provide a means to constrain the depth of circulation because assimilation of hydrothermal fluids or hydrothermally altered country rock will raise their chlorine (Cl) contents. Here we present Cl concentrations in combination with chemical thermobarometry data on glassy basaltic rocks and melt inclusions from the Southern Mid-Atlantic Ridge (SMAR; ~ 3 cm year.sup.-1 full spreading rate) and the Gakkel Ridge (max. 1.5 cm year.sup.-1 full spreading rate) in order to define the depth and extent of chlorine contamination. Basaltic glasses show Cl-contents ranging from ca. 50-430 ppm and ca. 40-700 ppm for the SMAR and Gakkel Ridge, respectively, whereas SMAR melt inclusions contain between 20 and 460 ppm Cl. Compared to elements of similar mantle incompatibility (e.g. K, Nb), Cl-excess (Cl/Nb or Cl/K higher than normal mantle values) of up to 250 ppm in glasses and melt inclusions are found in 75% of the samples from both ridges. Cl-excess is interpreted to indicate assimilation of hydrothermal brines (as opposed to bulk altered rock or seawater) based on the large range of Cl/K ratios in samples showing a limited spread in H.sub.2O contents. Resorption and disequilibrium textures of olivine, plagioclase and clinopyroxene phenocrysts and an abundance of xenocrysts and gabbroic fragments in the SMAR lavas suggest multiple generations of crystallization and assimilation of hydrothermally altered rocks that contain these brines. Calculated pressures of last equilibration based on the major element compositions of melts cannot provide reliable estimates of the depths at which this crystallization/assimilation occurred as the assimilation negates the assumption of crystallization under equilibrium conditions implicit in such calculations. Clinopyroxene-melt thermobarometry on rare clinopyroxene phenocrysts present in the SMAR magmas yield lower crustal crystallization/assimilation depths (10-13 km in the segment containing clinopyroxene). The Cl-excesses in SMAR melt inclusions indicate that assimilation occurred before crystallization, while also homogeneous Cl in melts from Gakkel Ridge indicate Cl addition during magma chamber processes. Combined, these observations imply that hydrothermal circulation reaches the lower crust at slow-spreading ridges, and thereby promotes cooling of the lower crust. The generally lower Cl-excess at slow-spreading ridges (compared to fast-spreading ridges) is probably related to them having few if any permanent magma chambers. Magmas therefore do not fractionate as extensively in the crust, providing less heat for assimilation (on average, slow-spreading ridge magmas have higher Mg#), and hydrothermal systems are ephemeral, leading to lower total degrees of crustal alteration and more variation in the amount of Cl contamination.
