Although many shark species display predictable and seasonal aggregations related to breeding activities, few studies have reported direct evidence of reproductive interactions of large sharks. In this context, the present study reports the first evidence of mating scars in female tiger sharks Galeocerdo cuvier at the Fernando de Noronha Archipelago (FEN), an oceanic remote insular system in the South Atlantic Ocean. Results from the records of seven wounded females suggest that mating activity may occur between February and August. These females measured between 267 and 372 cm in total length, which is aligned with previous studies reporting size at sexual maturity for Atlantic tiger sharks. Although some females exhibited healed wounds, three of them had fresh, open wounds. One of the females also had a swollen and red cloaca. We also report the first presumably gravid female tiger shark for the region. Although sporadic, the observations herein reported indicate the importance of FEN for tiger shark reproduction in western equatorial Atlantic waters. This finding is especially relevant as FEN has been identified as an important genetic hotspot for tiger sharks, with the largest global genetic diversity for the species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Among the various shark species that are captured as bycatch in commercial fishing operations, the group of pelagic sharks is still one of the least studied and known. Within those, the crocodile shark, Pseudocarcharias kamoharai, a small-sized lamnid shark, is occasionally caught by longline vessels in certain regions of the tropical oceans worldwide. However, the population dynamics of this species, as well as the impact of fishing mortality on its stocks, are still unknown, with the crocodile shark currently one of the least studied of all pelagic sharks. Given this, the present study aimed to assess the population structure of P. kamoharai in several regions of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans using genetic molecular markers. The nucleotide composition of the mitochondrial DNA control region of 255 individuals was analyzed, and 31 haplotypes were found, with an estimated diversity Hd = 0.627, and a nucleotide diversity π = 0.00167. An analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) revealed a fixation index ΦST = -0.01118, representing an absence of population structure among the sampled regions of the Atlantic Ocean, and between the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. These results show a high degree of gene flow between the studied areas, with a single genetic stock and reduced population variability. In panmictic populations, conservation efforts can be concentrated in more restricted areas, being these representative of the total biodiversity of the species. The reproductive cycle of Cardisoma guanhumi was described from the analysis of seasonal variation of the gonadal maturation stages. The first maturity for both sexes was determined based on three different tests: inflexion point on the curve; relevant character (morphometry); and histological analysis (physiology). In addition, some aspects of sexual dimorphism for the population were studied. A total of 353 individuals caught in north-eastern Brazil between December 2006 and November 2007 were analysed. The sex-ratio was statistically equal (P ≥ 0.05) and the carapace width (CW) of the females ranged from 4.34 to 8.56 cm and of the males from 2.84 to 9.22 cm. Mature females with fully developed gonads begin to appear in the dry season (August) and ovigerous females occurred from November to February, suggesting that spawning occurs mainly during the rainy season. The CW of first sexual maturity for females ranged from 5.87 cm to 6.70 cm and males from 6.22 cm to 7.20 cm. The highest percentage of individuals caught were juveniles, indicating the need for a targeted effort to preserve the species. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Simple Summary: Sharks rely on a diet with high lipid content, depending on gallbladder proper functioning for lipid emulsification, absorption, and subsequent hepatic storage. The present study reports a physiological impairment due to bile accumulation in juvenile tiger sharks and the possible causes of such condition. Physiological adaptations have evolved to help sharks face rapid periods of feast. Tiger sharks are generalist apex predators that rely on a high-lipid/protein diet. To achieve a satisfactory nutritional condition, proper lipid absorption and hepatic storage are needed. Bile secretion in sharks is low and sporadic but increases during short periods of fasting. The present study describes a physiological impairment caused by bile accumulation in juvenile tiger sharks, possibly due to prolonged fasting. These evidences suggest that, even though sharks have adaptations that prevent them from dying from starvation, alarming physiological alterations might occur.
