The COVID-19 pandemic forced many instructors to find new ways to achieve learning outcomes and connect to students within a hybrid or online teaching landscape. However, some of the creative ways instructors connected with students can now be used both in online classes and as we adapt back into full-time in-person instruction. Virtual notebooks were a tool used by this writing team to help structure online and in-person courses at both the undergraduate and graduate level, as well as facilitate collaboration and reflection. Grounded in a connectivist pedagogy, virtual notebooks are interactive, "live" resources that allow instructors and students to collaborate in real time, link to outside resources easily, and store information in a central location. Three vignettes (two undergraduate courses, one graduate course) provide specific applications and recommendations for virtual notebook use in recreation and leisure courses. Objective Health programs for Indigenous people are most effective, acceptable, and sustainable when Indigenous perspectives are prioritized. Codesign builds on Indigenous people's creativity and propensity to experiment with new technologies and ensures research is designed and implemented in a culturally safe and respectful manner. Limited research has focused on older Indigenous people as partners in digital health. No research has focused on the acceptability and feasibility of older Indigenous people using wearables for heart health monitoring. This study provides insights into the acceptability and feasibility for ≥55-year-old Indigenous people living in remote locations to use wearables (watches and patches) to detect atrial fibrillation (AF) and high blood pressure. Methods This mixed methods study was codesigned and coimplemented with the local Aboriginal Controlled Health Service in a remote area of New South Wales, Australia. It included active involvement and codesign with the participants. The devices used in this study included a Withings Scan watch and a Biobeat patch. Results Despite challenging conditions (>36°C) and variable internet connectivity, 11 Indigenous older adults participated in a five-day wearables program in a remote location. Participants indicated that using digital health devices was acceptable and feasible for older Indigenous users. They described high levels of comfort, safety and convenience when using wearables (patches and watches) to detect AF. They were active participants in codesigning the program. Conclusion Older Indigenous Australians are motivated to use wearable health devices. They are keen to participate in codesign innovative health tech programs to ensure new health technologies are acceptable to Indigenous people and feasible for remote locations.

Abstract Climate change interacts with the sources and cycling of contaminants, such as radionuclides, in the environment. In this review, we discuss the implications of climate change impacts on existing and potential future sources of radionuclides associated with human activities to the marine environment. The overall effect on operational releases of radionuclides from the nuclear and non-nuclear sectors will likely be increased interference or prevention of normal operations due to weather-related events. For certain radioactive waste dumped at sea and sunken nuclear submarines, the impact of climate change and ocean acidification on the release of radionuclides and their subsequent fate in the marine environment should be considered further. Fluxes from secondary sources of radionuclides in the marine and terrestrial environment and cryosphere will change in response to climate change impacts such as sea level rise, warming and changes in precipitation patterns. In addition, climate change impacts may increase the risk of releases of radionuclides from operational and legacy wastes on land to the marine environment. Overall, our synthesis highlights that there is a need to understand and assess climate change impacts on sources of radionuclides to the marine environment to meet environmental and management challenges under future climate scenarios.

Wildfires are becoming increasingly frequent and severe in the tropical peatlands of Southern Borneo, with major consequences for both wildlife and people that inhabit them. Burning peat releases vast amounts of toxic smoke that, when inhaled, can cause a plethora of health-related issues. With some of the largest remaining populations of Bornean orang-utans (Pongo pygmaeus) being found in peatland forests, wildfires are becoming one of the greatest threats to this Critically Endangered ape, yet the effects of the toxic smoke on their health are unknown. Wildfire has long been known to influence wildlife disease by reducing populations of free-living parasites in the environment (thus altering host exposure), and there is a growing body of evidence to suggest that smoke may affect host susceptibility to such parasites by diminishing physiological condition and immune function. In this study, we investigated parasitic nematode infections in wild Bornean orang-utans inhabiting a drained peatland forest prone to fire and smoke. We identified four gastrointestinal nematode taxa that varied significantly in their prevalence and intensity. Overall prevalence of nematode infection was high, but intensity was relatively low. We present some evidence for an increase the prevalence and intensity of certain nematode taxa after the wildfire smoke event. Namely, an increase in the prevalence of Enterobius spp. and Trichuris spp., and an increase in the intensity of hookworm infections, after the smoke period. We identify the need for multi-year, multi-fire event research to increase sample sizes, along with measuring endocrinological markers of physiological condition, in tandem with parasitological monitoring, to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the impacts of environmental changes on orang-utan health.

Abstract The design of cereblon-binding molecular glues (MGs) that selectively recruit a desired protein while excluding teratogenic SALL4 is an area of significant interest when designing therapeutic agents. Previous studies show that SALL4 is degraded in the presence of IKZF1 degraders pomalidomide, and to a lesser extent by CC-220. To expand our understanding of the molecular basis for the interaction of SALL4 with cereblon, we performed biophysical and structural studies demonstrating that SALL4 zinc finger domains one and two (ZF1-2) interact with cereblon (CRBN) in a unique manner. ZF1 interacts with the N-terminal domain of cereblon and ZF2 binds as expected in the C-terminal IMiD-binding domain. Both ZF1 and ZF2 contribute to the potency of the interaction of ZF1-2 with CRBN:MG complexes and the affinities of SALL4 ZF1-2 for the cereblon:CC-220 complex are less potent than for the corresponding pomalidomide complex. Structural analysis provides a rationale for understanding the reduced affinity of SALL4 for cereblon in the presence of CC-220, which engages both ZF1 and ZF2. These studies further our understanding of the molecular glue-mediated interactions of zinc finger-based proteins with cereblon and may provide structural tools for the prospective design of compounds with reduced binding and degradation of SALL4.

Hybrid immunity, as a result of infection and vaccination to SARS-CoV-2, has been well studied in adults but limited evidence is available in children. We evaluated the antibody responses to primary SARS-CoV-2 infection among vaccinated and unvaccinated children aged ≥ 5 years. Methods: A longitudinal cohort study of children aged ≥ 5 was conducted during August 2021–August 2022, at sites in Arizona, Texas, Utah, and Florida. Children submitted weekly nasal swabs for PCR testing and provided sera 14–59 days after PCR-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection. Antibodies were measured by ELISA against the receptor-binding domain (RBD) and S2 domain of ancestral Spike (WA1), in addition to Omicron (BA.2) RBD, following infection in children, with and without prior monovalent ancestral mRNA COVID-19 vaccination. Results: Among the 257 participants aged 5 to 18 years, 166 (65%) had received at least two mRNA COVID-19 vaccine doses ≥ 14 days prior to infection. Of these, 53 occurred during Delta predominance, with 37 (70%) unvaccinated at the time of infection. The remaining 204 infections occurred during Omicron predominance, with 53 (26%) participants unvaccinated. After adjusting for weight, age, symptomatic infection, and gender, significantly higher mean RBD AUC values were observed among the vaccinated group compared to the unvaccinated group for both WA1 and Omicron (p < 0.0001). A smaller percentage of vaccinated children reported fever during illness, with 55 (33%) reporting fever compared to 44 (48%) unvaccinated children reporting fever (p = 0.021). Conclusions: Children with vaccine-induced immunity at the time of SARS-CoV-2 infection had higher antibody levels during convalescence and experienced less fever compared to unvaccinated children during infection.

The keys are adaptation, flexibility, and curiosity about what could work.

The quality of undergraduate student writing is cause for concern among academics and industry professionals alike. Because writing apprehension is thought to be a contributing factor in the current deficit of undergraduate writing proficiency, the Writing Apprehension Test (WAT) was administered to parks, recreation, and tourism students to determine change in self-reported levels of writing apprehension as a result of a writing intervention program. The writing intervention program centered on the use of graduate writing mentorship and scaffolded, authentic writing assignments. Differences in pre- and post-WAT scores indicated lowered levels of writing apprehension for the intervention group. Additional analyses were conducted by deconstructing items included in the WAT into four subsets (e.g., enjoyment of writing, confident in ability, self-esteem, evaluation of writing), furthering empirical research on the WAT itself. Findings suggest that mentorship and authentic writing assignments within the discipline may be a viable avenue for improvement in undergraduate writing ability.

Many Latin American and other Global South countries adopted gender quotas during democratic transitions. What explains late-adopting cases like Chile? We analyze two instances: the 2015–2016 electoral reforms, which finally introduced a 40-percent gender quota, and the 2020–2023 constitutional process, which introduced gender parity. Using a qualitative analysis that draws on 39 elite interviews, we posit that efforts to redesign national political institutions in order to address democratic deficits create transition-like moments. In turn, these moments create windows of opportunity for quota advocates. We show how quota advocates in the parties, congress, and civil society leveraged growing voter discontent to pressure their resistant colleagues and ultimately secure gender quotas (and later gender parity) as part of larger reform efforts. Our analysis of the Chilean case elevates two factors explaining quota adoption: the long arc of democratization and women's role as protagonists in electoral reforms.

IntroductionHistorically, astronomy has prioritized visuals to present information, with scientists and communicators overlooking the critical need to communicate astrophysics with blind or low-vision audiences and provide novel channels for sighted audiences to process scientific information.MethodsThis study sonified NASA data of three astronomical objects presented as aural visualizations, then surveyed blind or low-vision and sighted individuals to elicit feedback on the experience of these pieces as it relates to enjoyment, education, and trust of the scientific data.ResultsData analyses from 3,184 sighted or blind or low-vision survey participants yielded significant self-reported learning gains and positive experiential responses.DiscussionResults showed that astrophysical data engaging multiple senses could establish additional avenues of trust, increase access, and promote awareness of accessibility in sighted and blind or low-vision communities.

Objectives Traditional potassium (K+) binders for treating hyperkalaemia are unpalatable and poorly tolerated. Newer K+ binders are reportedly better tolerated; however, no published data describe their palatability, a determinant of long-term adherence. This study evaluated the palatability of and preference for three K+ binders: sodium and calcium polystyrene sulfonate (S/CPS), sodium zirconium cyclosilicate (SZC) and calcium patiromer sorbitex (patiromer).Design Phase 4, randomised, participant-blinded, cross-over study. Participants were randomised to one of six taste sequences and, using a ‘sip and spit’ approach, tasted each K+ binder before completing a survey.Setting 17 centres across the USA, Canada and European Union.Participants 144 participants with chronic kidney disease, hyperkalaemia and no recent use of K+ binders.Main outcome measures For the primary (USA) and key secondary (Canada and European Union) endpoints, participants rated palatability attributes (taste, texture, smell and mouthfeel) and willingness to take each K+ binder on a scale of 0–10 (rational evaluation). Feelings about each attribute, and the idea of taking the product once daily, were evaluated using a non-verbal, visual measure of emotional response. Finally, participants ranked the K+ binders according to palatability.Results In each region, SZC and patiromer outperformed S/CPS on overall palatability (a composite of taste, texture, smell and mouthfeel), based on rational evaluation and emotional response. Taking the product once daily was more appealing for SZC and patiromer, creating greater receptivity than the idea of taking S/CPS. The emotional response to mouthfeel had the strongest influence on feelings about taking each product. In each region, a numerically greater proportion of participants ranked SZC as the most preferred K+ binder versus patiromer or S/CPS.Conclusions Preference for more palatable K+ binders such as SZC and patiromer may provide an opportunity to improve adherence to long-term treatment of hyperkalaemia.Trial registration number NCT04566653.

Nesting colonial seabirds are prime examples of central-place foragers, animals that must return to a central location (e.g., a breeding colony) after each bout of foraging. They must balance the costs and benefits of foraging with the need to return to their colonies frequently to form pair bonds during courtship, incubate, provision mates and offspring, and protect and rear young. For some populations, the loss and degradation of suitable breeding habitat due to human activities have necessitated the construction of new breeding sites and/or the restoration of previously occupied sites. South Island, which is part of the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel (HRBT) complex in the Commonwealth of Virginia, U.S.A., is a human-created island that supported Virginia's largest mixed species seabird colony until 2020, when the expansion of the HRBT began and when all nesting seabirds were permanently excluded from the site. We studied the movement patterns of foraging common terns (Sterna hirundo) to determine how travel to and around foraging sites related to their colony location and to inform the siting and construction of a new breeding island. We tracked 18 individual common terns from 07 June to 29 June 2018, and we used a hidden Markov model to assign behavioral states and investigate common tern movements around the HRBT. Common terns spent more than half their time in the colony (58%), followed by time devoted to foraging (22%), and the remainder of their time was spent on outbound (15%) and inbound (5%) transit. Terns traveled as far as 98km from the colony, but on average foraged relatively close to South Island (13.6 ± 0.3km, mean ± 1 SD). Individuals tended to forage in the same locations, but there was variation among individuals. Flying to foraging sites uses energy during the already energetically costly breeding season, thus managers should prioritize placing a new colony site in a location that minimizes the distance traveled to the foraging locations frequented by the South Island birds while accounting for other life-history characteristics. These findings could help in the design and construction of new breeding sites or the restoration of current sites for other, related species, particularly for which these data do not exist.

The international river Paraná flows through Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina, and holds two major binational dams: the upstream ITAIPU dam (Brazil-Paraguay) and the downstream Yacyreta dam (Argentina-Paraguay). In the past years, the South American region was strongly affected by adverse environmental challenges exacerbated by climate change, like wildfires and severe droughts, which in turn drastically affected the water flow of the Paraná river, a river used for multiple purposes, inter alia the production of energy. The hydropower obtained from ITAIPU is one of the main sources of energy for Paraguay and the Southern part of Brazil. At the same time, the downstream parts of the river is used for navigation purposes, which is crucial for land-locked Paraguay to export its agricultural products, and for water consumption, as is the case for Argentina. The present case study will show how in spite of these challenges, South America has been an successful example of transboundary water cooperation, especially by using the international water law guidelines aimed at achieving reasonable and equitable utilization of an international river.

The last day of a course is often viewed as awkward, abrupt, and even antithetical to a course's aims. More often than not, prime opportunities for reflection, reinforcement, reconciliation, and closure are typically subsumed to administrative tasks and end-of-course exhaustion. This paper summarizes the scant end-of-course literature, reviews the theoretical importance of ending a course well, and highlights a few "tried and true" end-of-course activities. Ending a course well may help students connect the dots, transfer learning, and experience academic and emotional closure, while simultaneously helping faculty refine their teaching and regroup in preparation for future iterations of the course. As leisure and learning experience design experts, leisure scholars are in a prime position to lead out in meaningful end-of-course pedagogy.

Abstract Active particles (living or synthetic) often move through inhomogeneous environments, such as gradients in light, heat or nutrient concentration, that can lead to directed motion (or taxis). Recent research has explored inhomogeneity in the rheological properties of a suspending fluid, in particular viscosity, as a mechanical (rather than biological) mechanism for taxis. Theoretical and experimental studies have shown that gradients in viscosity can lead to reorientation due to asymmetric viscous forces. In particular, recent experiments with Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii algae swimming across sharp viscosity gradients have observed that the microorganisms are redirected and scattered due to the viscosity change. Here we develop a simple theoretical model to explain these experiments. We model the swimmers as spherical squirmers and focus on small, but sharp, viscosity changes. We derive a law, analogous to Snell’s law of refraction, that governs the orientation of active particles in the presence of a viscosity interface. Theoretical predictions show good agreement with experiments and provide a mechanistic understanding of the observed reorientation process.

Introduction In chronic facial palsy, synkinetic muscle overactivity and shortening causes muscle stiffness resulting in reduced movement and functional activity. This article studies the role of multimodal therapy in improving outcomes. Methods Seventy-five facial palsy patients completed facial rehabilitation before being successfully discharged by the facial therapy team. The cohort was divided into four subgroups depending on the time of initial attendance post-onset. The requirement for facial therapy, chemodenervation, or surgery was assessed with East Grinstead Grade of Stiffness (EGGS). Outcomes were measured using the Facial Grading Scale (FGS), Facial Disability Index, House-Brackmann scores, and the Facial Clinimetric Evaluation scale. Background and Aims: The introduction of ICSI 30 years ago paved the way for epididymal/testicular spermatozoa to be used to fertilise oocytes in couples undergoing ART. Currently, spermatozoa is recovered from the epididymis or testis using varying approaches, including micro-surgery and fine-needle aspiration, mostly in men with obstructive and nonobstructive azoospermia. The samples delivered to the laboratory for processing are of varying quality with regards to amount of material/tissue, presence of spermatozoa, and other cells. The success of processing the tissue can have a direct impact on the outcome of the subsequent ICSI and our aim for this review was to identify ways to improve the preparation techniques for epididymal/testicular samples. Ethics approval was obtained from WSLHD HREC Ref 5583QA. Methods: The review included 527 ICSI cycles for 311 patients (2016-2022) where epididymal/testicular spermatozoa had been used. Approaches for sample preparation included mini-gradient centrifugation and removal of red blood cells using erythrocyte lysis buffer (ELB). In cases with severe oligoasthenozoospermia (105 cycles, 79 patients), a phosphodiesterase inhibitor (PI) was added to induce motility. Results: Employing mini-gradient centrifugation or adding ELB did not result in lost spermatozoa for any cases, but vastly reduced sample debris allowing for easier identification of spermatozoa. Fertilisation rate after ICSI was 57.9±1.2%. Motile spermatozoa were found and injected in all 105 samples after addition of PI and the fertilisation rate after ICSI was 55.3±2.7. To date cycles with PI have resulted in 26 live births with no abnormalities and all infants were of appropriate weight for gestational age. Conclusions: Employing precise preparation techniques for epididymal/testicular samples is paramount to allow for timely identification of motile spermatozoa for ICSI and assure optimal overall outcome. Sharing and discussing successful approaches with the wider embryology community allows for discussion and refining of techniques which can benefit all.

Background: The majority of colorectal cancers (CRCs) are detected after symptomatic presentation to primary care. Given the shared symptoms of CRC and benign disorders, it is challenging to manage the risk of missed diagnosis. Colonoscopy resources cannot keep pace with increasing demand. There is a pressing need for access to simple triage tools in primary care to help prioritise patients for referral. Aim: To evaluate the performance of a novel spectroscopy-based CRC blood test in primary care. Design & setting: Mixed-methods pilot study of test performance and GP focus group discussions in South Wales. Method: Patients on the urgent suspected cancer (USC) pathway were recruited for the Raman spectroscopy (RS) test coupled to machine learning classification (‘Raman-CRC’) to identify CRC within the referred population. Qualitative focus group work evaluated the acceptability of the test in primary care by thematic analysis of focus group theorising. Results: A total of 532 patients aged ≥50 years referred on the USC pathway were recruited from 27 GP practices. Twenty-nine patients (5.0%) were diagnosed with CRC. Raman-CRC identified CRC with sensitivity 95.7%, specificity 69.3% with area under curve (AUC) of 0.80 compared with colonoscopy as the reference test (248 patients). Stage I and II cancers were detected with 78.6% sensitivity. Focus group themes underlined the convenience of a blood test for the patient and the test’s value as a risk assessment tool in primary care. Conclusion: The findings support this novel, non-invasive, blood-based method to prioritise those patients most likely to have CRC. Raman-CRC may accelerate access to diagnosis with potential to improve cancer outcomes.

The camp community understands that participation in camp produces a variety of impacts; what is less understood are the causal mechanisms leading to outcomes. In the past, research on the camp experience treated causal mechanisms as monolithic; this commentary argues that a weakness in existing camp research is the assumption that "camp" is "camp" and that there is a lack of attention to how components of camp interact to produce valued developmental outcomes. Using two indices from complementary fields (Home Observation for Measurement of the Environment [HOME] and Healthy Sports Index [HSI]) as exemplars, a framework exploring variation in the elements of tri-dimensional offerings between camps is proposed. What the HOME index and HSI have established in other fields is what the camp community could have: a tool that initially helps researchers examine how the structural variations within and between individual camps may eventually help explain the quality and strength of outcomes for campers and counselors.

Objective: Along with other Australian health professionals, occupational therapy students need to understand Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and health issues to develop their capacity to work effectively with this community and meet accreditation standards. The study aimed to explore the learning experiences of occupational therapy students during a module focused on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples' health issues and approaches. Methods: A qualitative descriptive method was used. Individual interviews were audiotaped, transcribed and analysed thematically following the module. Participants were asked about their prior experience with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, feelings about undertaking the module, difficulties and highlights of the module, and how the module contributed to their learning. Results: In all, 18 students participated in interviews. Interview themes were (1) student context of learning about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples' heath and culture, (2) experiencing the module with others and (3) student learning gains following the module. Conclusion: Students developed in their self-awareness and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples' issues of relevance to occupational therapy. Further research is needed to evaluate educational activities with occupational therapy and other health professional students across Australia, and ongoing culturally responsiveness training for health professionals (post-registration). Health professional students need to develop their knowledge and skills in working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to be culturally responsive and meet their health needs effectively. What does this paper add? This study is the first to describe the responses of occupational therapy students to a module on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health and wellbeing. Students were challenged about any biases that could affect their capacity to be culturally responsive. What are the implications for practitioners? Background: Most pediatric elevated blood pressure (BP) remains undiagnosed. The American Academy of Pediatrics states "there is limited evidence to support school-based measurement of children's BP." We explored the utility school-based BP screening. Methods: A cross-sectional sample of 4096 students ages 6 to 17 from Title 1 Miami-Dade Public Schools (50% female, 71% non-Hispanic black, 26% Hispanic) had their systolic/diastolic BP (SBP/DBP) and body mass index (BMI) collected over the 2016 to 2017 or 2017 to 2018 school years. Relative risks (RRs) ratios were calculated to estimate normal/elevated SBP/DBP by BMI percentile, ethnicity, and sex. Results: Overall, 26.4% had at least one elevated BP measurement, of which 59% were not obese. RR for obese status was significant for all categories of elevated BP (RRs > 1.88, p < 0.0001). Being either female (RR = 1.34, p = 0.009) or Hispanic (RR = 1.31, p = 0.014) was significantly associated with elevated DBP. BMI accounted for <10% of the variation in BP (SBP: F(1, 4095) = 367.6, adjusted R[superscript 2] = 0.08, p < 0.0001; DBP: F(1, 4095) = 93.3, adjusted R[superscript 2] = 0.02, p < 0.0001). Conclusion: These findings support providing BP screenings in school settings. Low-income and minority students often have limited access to health care, higher obesity rates, and unhealthy behaviors. Our findings support universal school-based BP screening regardless of weight status, particularly among ethnically diverse populations.

Written communication skills are essential in today's world; yet, there is a perception (real or perceived) of a decline in the writing skills of undergraduate students. There is a recognition that there are systematic issues within the landscape of higher education that make teaching writing challenging at certain institutions. A writing program -- based on the theoretical foundations of peer reviewing, scaffolding, mentorship, and authentic learning -- was created to enhance undergraduate student writing skills while simultaneously train graduate students to teach writing as future faculty in the field. This article describes the program designed to improve overall undergraduate writing skills through a structured intervention, and will discuss ideas of how to move forward with similar programs.
