Abstract

The traditional materials encounter difficulties to comply with all the properties required by new components under service conditions. The automotive and the railway industries require low cost solutions to improve the final performance of components made from steel, cast iron, or even conventional aluminium alloys (e.g. clutch discs, brake discs, or pistons). Weight reduction, improvement in wear behaviour, high thermal conductivity, low coefficient of thermal expansion, and easy recycling are sought, among other characteristics, in order to obtain more efficient products leading to a reduction of pollutant emissions. The range of materials that can meet these requirements is presently very narrow and their final price is more expensive (e.g. aluminium matrix composites) than currently used materials. In this paper a new low cost metal matrix composite that has been used to produce pistons, clutch discs, and train brake discs is presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Since the advent of deep brain stimulation (DBS) for the treatment of Parkinson's disease (PD), subsequent cognitive and neuropsychiatric effects of this procedure have become well-chronicled. Yet, thermolitic lesion of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) is still a valid option when DBS cannot be applied, and little has been published regarding its impact on cognition and mood. We examined the cognitive and neuropsychiatric functions of 10 consecutive patients with advanced PD undergoing simultaneous bilateral subthalamotomies. With 24 months of follow-up, the patients, three of whom were on anticholinergics prior to surgery, showed no deterioration in cognitive assessments including verbal fluency. Hypoactive behaviors (depression and apathy) showed lasting improvement, while hyperactive behaviors (euphoria and disinhibition) transiently increased after surgery. Improvement in hypoactive behaviors correlated with improvement in hypokinetic movements, and enhanced hyperactive behaviors followed the course of post-operative hyperkinetic movements. Such correlations may support the role of the STN in modulating limbic connections between the basal ganglia and frontal cortex. The results of this proof-of-concept pilot study suggest the need for larger, long-term, randomized controlled studies to assess motor, neuropsychiatric, behavioral and radiologic correlations after subthalamotomies. Abstract

Objectives Study the involvement of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) in spontaneous blinking. Methods 8 patients with parkinson’s disease and bilateral DBS implanted in the STN were included in the study. Long segments (>20 min) of EEG and STN-LFP recordings at rest were selected both in “off” and “on” motor states. Blink artifacts in the EEG were used to select 100 segments of 4 s centered around the blink per patient and motor state. Changes in oscillatory activity were measured by means of normalized gabor transforms. Results A significant beta desynchronization (beta ERD) preceding the blink was observed in 11 of the 16 STN in the off state, and 12 out of the 16 STN in the on state. The ERD was more commonly observed in the dorsal and intermediate contact pairs (1–2, 2–3 and 5–6, 6–7). The mean beta ERD of the 8 patients was 30% in “on” and 16% in “off”. Conclusions Spontaneous blinks are preceded by a beta ERD in the STN, similar to the desynchronization observed before a voluntary movement, but of smaller amplitude.
