4. Case Study: An International Business Negotiation Course Design and Implementation of a VR-Based Experiential Learning Environment

Abstract

Experimental learning is one kind of contextual learning, which places learners in a variety of virtual or real contexts to acquire knowledge, gain ability and experience, and generates emotion through experiencing and perceiving, communicating and exploring, and self-reflecting. Applying VR technology to experiential learning involves both technology and teaching. Based on the Learning Pyramid, Constructivist Learning Theory, and the characteristics of virtual technology, this study proposes a theoretical model of virtual reality experiential learning, which takes the international business negotiation scene as an example and employs such software as 3Ds Max and VR-platform to implement an experiential learning context. It is found that, compared with traditional teaching, this learning context has effectively increased the learners' memorization and understanding ability, their interest and motivation in learning, enhanced their learning experience and improved the learning effects. This study not only provides a theoretical framework for and verifies the promotion effect of virtual technology on learners but also enriches the research examples of virtual reality experiential learning, which has certain theoretical value and practical significance.

Abstract

Abstract The seismic behavior of steel reinforced ultra-high strength concrete (SRUHSC) composite frame was investigated through finite element analysis (FEA) modeling. A FEA model for the seismic analysis of the SRUHSC frame was first established and verified with test results. The numerical model was subsequently used to study the seismic performance of the SRUHSC frame, including the P-Δ skeleton curves, the stiffness degradation, the failure mode, the subsequence mechanisms of plastic hinges and the stress–strain distribution. Finally, a parametric study was carried out to investigate the effect of salient parameters on the behavior of the SRUHSC frame. It was found that with the increment of the concrete strength, yield strength of steel, and linear stiffness ratio of beam to column, the horizontal load-bearing capacity and the elastic stiffness of the structure were improved, but there was no significant effect on the ductility. With the increment of the volume stirrup ratio and structural steel ratio, the horizontal load-bearing capacity and the ductility of the structure were both improved. However, with the increment of the axial-load ratio, there was no obvious change in the elastic stiffness of the structure, but the horizontal load bearing capacity and the ductility of the structure decreased obviously. In addition, the accuracy of a concrete constitutive model in the different degrees of constraint for the SRUHSC frame proposed by the authors was verified with the FEA model.

11. Analysis of androgen receptor expression and activity in the mouse brain

Abstract

Abstract Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) is the core treatment for advanced prostate cancer (PCa), with a proven survival benefit. ADT lowers circulating testosterone levels throughout the body, but with it comes a variety of reported side effects including fatigue, muscle wastage, weight gain, hot flushes and importantly cognitive impairment, depression, and mood swings. Testosterone has a key role in brain masculinization, but its direct effects are relatively poorly understood, due both to the brain’s extreme complexity and the fact that some of testosterone activities are driven via local conversion to oestrogen, especially during embryonic development. The exact roles, function, and location of the androgen receptor (AR) in the adult male brain are still being discovered, and therefore the cognitive side effects of ADT may be unrecognized or under-reported. The age of onset of several neurological diseases overlap with PCa, therefore, there is a need to separate ADT side effects from such co-morbidities. Here we analysed the activity and expression level of the AR in the adult mouse brain, using an ARE-Luc reporter mouse and immunohistochemical staining for AR in all the key brain regions via coronal slices. We further analysed our data by comparing to the Allen Mouse Brain Atlas. AR-driven luciferase activity and distinct nuclear staining for AR were seen in several key brain areas including the thalamus, hypothalamus, olfactory bulb, cerebral cortex, Purkinje cells of the cerebellum and the hindbrain. We describe and discuss the potential role of AR in these areas, to inform and enable extrapolation to potential side effects of ADT in humans.
