The synthesis, crystal structure, spectroscopic, luminescence properties and Hirshfeld surface analysis of a new heterometallic complex, [Mn(L)(H2O)(CH3CH2OH)]2[Ni(CN)4], (H2L = N,N′-bis(3,5-di-t-butylsalicylidene)-1,2-propanediamine) was reported. Single crystal diffraction measurements showed that the heterometallic MnIII–NiII complex consists of two [(Mn(L)(H2O)(CH3CH2OH)]+ cations and one [Ni(CN)4]2– anion. The Mn1 and Mn2 ions are hexacoordinate by N2O4 donor sets and have a distorted octahedral geometry. The 3D Hirshfeld surface and 2D fingerprint plots showed that the main interactions were the H⋯H intermolecular interactions with relative contributions of about 73.8%. Objective:Despite various pain management methods, chronic pain is still a challenging issue after thoracotomy. This retrospective study was designed to determine the possible factors affecting the development of chronic pain following open thoracotomy.Methods:The study included patients who underwent elective open thoracotomy at Ankara University İbni Sina Hospital, between 01.01.2016 and 31.12.2020. The medical files and electronic records of the patients were scanned from the system. Patient history, analgesic methods, and surgical details were recorded. The need for and usage analgesic drugs after the surgery were also recorded.Results:A total of 229 patients who underwent thoracotomy were included in the study, and 83 (36.2%) patients had chronic pain. Duration of surgery, doses of remifentanil, fentanyl or NSAI drugs, duration or number of chest tubes (more than 4 days, or more than 2 tubes), diabetes, or PCEA usage were found as variables affecting pain. Logistic Regression, Multilayer Perceptron, Naive Bayes, AdaBoost, and Random Forest methods were used to evaluate the prediction performances. According to the model created with logistic regression, the rate of the correct classification was 90.8%. The duration of surgery, remifentanil administration, chest tube for more than 4 days, and diabetes were found to be risk factors for developing chronic pain. Fentanyl bolus, PCEA-bupivacaine, and NSAID bolus were determined as preventive factors.Conclusion:A careful analysis of risk factors should be performed for each patient to prevent chronic pain after thoracotomy, and preemptive effective analgesia methods should be performed.

Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of ultrasound-guided transversus abdominis plane (TAP) block in patients diagnosed with chronic pain after undergoing lower abdominal surgery. Methods: Patients who were admitted to the pain medicine clinic between January 1, 2016, and January 1, 2020, and underwent TAP block with the diagnosis of chronic pain after undergoing lower abdominal surgery were retrospectively analyzed. The visual analog scale (VAS) score was measured before the procedure and at the 1-month and 3-month follow-ups. Results: The proportion of patients with a reduction in VAS scores of >50% after TAP block application was 50% at the 1-month follow-up and 72.5% at the 3-month follow-up. The changes in the VAS score was found to be statistically significant (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Although ultrasound-guided TAP block seems to be an effective treatment method for chronic pain after lower abdominal surgery, further studies and clinical trials investigating different types of surgeries and including a larger number of patients are warranted.

ZnO, Co doped ZnO (ZnO:Co) and CoO thin films were deposited on glass substrates by using the spark discharge technique with Zn-Zn, Zn-Co and Co-Co metal electrodes (tips). The structural and optical properties of the films were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy measurements and UV-Vis spectrometry. Cubic phase reflection of CoO (200) was observed in the samples containing Co. The size of nanoparticles had varied between 38 nm and 200 nm in ZnO thin films. When Co electrode was used, spherical structure had deteriorated and clusters of particles, with smaller radii, were observed. In addition, when Co-Co electrode pairs were used, various cavities with different sizes were formed. Especially, it was observed that the optical transmittance had generally increased with the decreasing spark (charge) voltage, while increasing with the number of sparks. The Co-containing samples were green in color and it was observed that the loss of transmission appears in a specific region in the Co-doped ZnO thin films due to characteristic d-d transition of Co2+ ions. The thickness of the films had decreased with the increasing number of sparks. In addition, the band gap energy, Eg, evaluated by UV-Vis spectroscopy measurements has been shifted to higher wavelengths (red shift) for the ZnO:Co thin films. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The μ-oxo-bridged Fe(III) dimer complex [{Fe(4-MeOL1)}(μ-O)]∙HOCH, (H-4-MeOL1 = N, N′-bis(4-methoxy-2-hydroxybenzylidene)-2,2-dimethylpropane-1,3-diamine), 1 is synthesized and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction. Complex 1 contains a [{Fe(4-MeOL1)}2(μ-O)] dimeric unit with a methanol solvent molecule of crystallization. Each Fe(III) ion has a distorted square-pyramidal coordination geometry. In the basal plane, the Fe(III) atom is coordinated by two N and two O atoms of the Schiff base ligand. The apical position is occupied by a bridging O ion, linking another Fe(III) ion in the complex. There are intermolecular C-H...O and C-H...π interactions among the dinuclear complexes. Two Schiff base complexes, [Cu(HL)2],1and [Ni(HL)2],2[H2L = 2–((E)–(2–hydroxyethylimino)methyl)–1–naptaphenol] have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis,1H NMR,13C NMR, IR spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. In the crystalline architecture of1and2, intermolecular O−H···O hydrogen bonds link the molecules which form one-dimensional polymeric chain structure along thecaxis. C−H···O and C−H···π intermolecular interaction also connect the molecules in the structures which form to 3D structures of1and2. Aims:Although there have been many studies about lumbar and cervical ablation procedures, few studies have been performed in the thoracic region. To evaluate the clinical results of a percutaneous disc decompression device in patients with radicular symptoms and/or dorsal pain due to thoracic disc herniation.Methods:Eleven patients with thoracic disc herniation and/or degenerative discs (all in T10-T11, or T11-T12 levels) who did not respond to conservative treatments were undergoing ablation and compression procedures. Pain and radicular symptoms consistent with the thoracolumbar region were confirmed via abnormal magnetic resonance imaging findings after detailed anamnesis and physical examination. All patients were evaluated before and 1, 3, 6, and 12 months after treatment using the visual analog scale score. The patient satisfaction scale was used to evaluate the level of patient satisfaction at the end of the treatment at 12 months.Results:The median visual analog scale score was 7.00±0.45 points before treatment and 2.73±0.65 points at 12 months post-procedure and were statistically significant (p

Grape seed (GS) is a by-product of the fruit juice and wine industry with the potential to be an alternative to synthetic antioxidants due to its antioxidant activity. Agro-industrial residues can be converted to more effective products by solid-state fermentation. The objective of the study was to investigate the effects of GS and fermented grape seed (FGS) on the growth performance, antioxidant capacity, and cecal microflora in broiler chickens. A total of 128 female broilers were randomly allocated into four treatment groups, each consisting of four replicates of eight birds. Throughout the 42-day feeding period, the birds were fed with soybean-corn based diet (CON), 0.15 g/kg synthetic antioxidant (butylated hydroxyanisole) supplemented diet (AO), 5 g/kg GS supplemented diet (GS), and 5 g/kg FGS supplemented diet (FGS). Dietary GS, FGS, and AO supplementation increased the BW (P < 0.05) and average daily weight gain (ADG , P < 0.05) compared with the CON group in the overall period of 42 days. Dietary FGS also increased the ADG (P < 0.05) in the period of 22–42 days compared with the control group. The pH of the breast meat of the chickens fed GS was higher (P < 0.01) than CON and FGS groups. Dietary FGS and AO decreased the b* value (P < 0.01) of breast meat compared with the CON group. Grape seed had the highest serum glutathione peroxidase (P < 0.05) and catalase (CAT, P < 0.01) levels among the treatment groups. The FGS also increased serum CAT level (P < 0.01) compared with the AO group. Moreover, dietary FGS supplementation increased Lactobacillus spp. (P < 0.05) in the cecum compared with the other treatment groups and decreased Staphylococcus aureus (P < 0.05) compared with the CON and AO groups. Salmonella enterica is a bacterial pathogen that usually infects its host through food sources. Translocation of the pathogen proteins into the host cells leads to changes in the signaling mechanism either by activating or inhibiting the host proteins. Using high-throughput ‘omic’ technologies, changes in the signaling components can be quantified at different levels; however, experimental hits are usually incomplete to represent the whole signaling system as some driver proteins stay hidden within the experimental data. Given that the bacterial infection modifies the response network of the host, more coherent view of the underlying biological processes and the signaling networks can be obtained by using a network modeling approach based on the reverse engineering principles in which a confident region from the protein interactome is found by inferring hits from the omic experiments. In this work, we have used a published temporal phosphoproteomic dataset of Salmonella-infected human cells and reconstructed the temporal signaling network of the human host by integrating the interactome and the phosphoproteomic datasets. We have combined two well-established network modeling frameworks, the Prize-collecting Steiner Forest (PCSF) approach and the Integer Linear Programming (ILP) based edge inference approach. The resulting network conserves the information on temporality, direction of interactions, while revealing hidden entities in the signaling, such as the SNARE binding, mTOR signaling, immune response, cytoskeleton organization, and apoptosis pathways. Targets of the Salmonella effectors in the host cells such as CDC42, RHOA, 14-3-3δ, Syntaxin family, Oxysterol-binding proteins were included in the reconstructed signaling network although they were not present in the initial phosphoproteomic data. We believe that integrated approaches have a high potential for the identification of clinical targets in infectious diseases, especially in the Salmonella infections.
