Abstract

First prototypes of large area, p-n junction, silicon carbide (SiC) detectors have been produced as part of an ongoing programme to develop a new particle identification wall for the focal plane detector of the MAGNEX magnetic spectrometer, in preparation for future NUMEN experimental campaigns. First characterizations of sensors from two wafers obtained with epitaxial silicon carbide growth and with different doping concentration are presented. Current (I-V) and capacitance (C-V) characteristics are investigated in order to determine the full depletion voltage and the doping profile. Radioactive {\alpha}-sources are used to measure the energy resolution and estimate the depletion depth.

2. Perception on Service Quality in a Military Training Course Measured by the HEdPERF Scale and Its Relationship with the Students' Characteristics

Abstract

Considering the educational services, the Brazilian Navy education aims to comply with continuous and progressive process of education, with own characteristics, which are constantly updated and improved based on some principles, such as guarantee of quality standard, continuous and progressive professionalisation, and integral and continuous evaluation. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the service quality of the training course at the Santa Catarina School of Sailor Apprentices, according to the students' perception. For this evaluation, the HEdPERF scale was used. Data collection was performed by using printed questionnaires and the sample consisted of 178 students enrolled in the sailor training course who voluntarily participated in the study. The instrument for data collection was validated by confirmatory component analysis by using the SmartPLS 3 software. Descriptive statistics and regression analysis were performed to assess the data with SPSS software. As a result, the study revealed that the respondents perceived the dimension "academic aspects" as having the highest quality, whereas the dimension "non-academic aspects" was perceived as having the lowest quality. Regression analysis showed that variables such as total monthly family income, education level and main motivation to enter the armed forces have a statistically significant relationship with certain items of the HEdPERF scale, which was adapted to the present study.

3. The Effects Resulting from Using WhatsApp in the Routines of Education Workers

Abstract

This article aims to explore the impacts of power dynamics arising from the use of the WhatsApp instant messaging application on the work routines of civil servants within a public educational institution. Utilizing the Foucauldian genealogy of power as a theoretical framework, we endeavor to conduct a critical historical analysis of the mechanics behind socially constituted power relations. Employing a qualitative case study approach, we juxtapose the analytics of power (drawing categories from the Foucauldian genealogy) with the investigative model of technological paradoxes, focusing on 'Control vs. Chaos' and 'Autonomy vs. Addiction', against data collected from interviews to uncover the power effects within this virtual space. Key findings include the observation that managers leverage a 'system of differentiations' to categorize and control subordinates through WhatsApp in a sophisticated and efficient manner. Moreover, the supposed enhancement of productivity through hyperconnectivity leads to compulsive smartphone use among employees, a phenomenon we interpret, following Foucault, as an institutionalized process of worker subjugation. Nonetheless, practices of resistance emerge, contesting these subjugation processes that affect the subject-workers. The institutional 'battle' for increased autonomy and healthier work routines emerges as one of the most potent forms of resistance against the overreach of power effects associated with WhatsApp use in the examined work contexts.

4. The Benefits of Common Inclusive Identities for Adolescent Bystanders' Intentions to Help Homophobic Bullying Victims

Abstract

Bystanders' helping behaviors are essential to mitigate bullying and its consequences, although bystanders do not always intervene on behalf of those who are victimized. One study (N = 170) tested, experimentally, the impact of different forms of common identities (one-group and dual-identity vs. control) on youth (aged between 12 and 19 years) bystanders' helping behavioral intentions in the context of a common form of bias-based bullying (i.e., homophobic bullying). Results showed that dual-identity triggered more behavioral intentions to help victims of homophobic bullying. Overall, these findings extended previous studies illustrating the potential of common identities to foster bystanders' helping responses to homophobic bullying episodes in the school context.

5. Hydrodynamical simulations of wind interaction in spider systems : A step toward understanding transitional millisecond pulsars

Abstract

The detected population of "spiders" has significantly grown in the past decade thanks to multiwavelength follow-up investigations of unidentified Fermi sources. These systems consist of low-mass stellar companions orbiting rotation-powered millisecond pulsars in short periods of a few hours up to day. Among them, a subset of intriguing objects called transitional millisecond pulsars (tMSPs) has been shown to exhibit a remarkable behavior, transitioning between pulsar-binary and faint low-mass X-ray binary states over a span of a few years. Our objective is to study the interaction of stellar winds in tMSPs in order to understand their observational properties. To this end we focus on the parameter range that places the system near Roche-lobe overflow. Employing the adaptative mesh refinement (AMR) AMRVAC 2.0 code, we performed 2D hydrodynamical (HD) simulations of the interaction between the flows from both stars, accounting for the effects of gravity and orbital motion. By studying the mass loss and launch speed of the winds, we successfully recreated two phenomenologically distinct regimes: the accretion stream and the radio pulsar state. We also identified the tipping point that marks the sharp transition between these two states. In the pulsar state, we reconstructed the corresponding X-ray light curves of the system that produces the characteristic double-peak pattern of these systems. The position of the peaks is shifted due to orbital motion and the leading peak is weaker due to eclipsing by the companion. We suggest that a smaller leading peak in X-rays is indicative of a nearly edge-on system. This study highlights the importance of gravity and orbital motion in the interaction between the companion and pulsar winds. Abstract

Self-supervised learning methods for medical images primarily rely on the imaging modality during pretraining. While such approaches deliver promising results, they do not leverage associated patient or scan information collected within Electronic Health Records (EHR). Here, we propose to incorporate EHR data during self-supervised pretraining with a Masked Siamese Network (MSN) to enhance the quality of chest X-ray representations. We investigate three types of EHR data, including demographic, scan metadata, and inpatient stay information. We evaluate our approach on three publicly available chest X-ray datasets, MIMIC-CXR, CheXpert, and NIH-14, using two vision transformer (ViT) backbones, specifically ViT-Tiny and ViT-Small. In assessing the quality of the representations via linear evaluation, our proposed method demonstrates significant improvement compared to vanilla MSN and state-of-the-art self-supervised learning baselines. 7. The Impact of an Academic Counselling Learning Analytics Tool: Evidence from 3 Years of Use

Abstract

Despite the importance of academic counselling for student success, providing timely and personalized guidance can be challenging for higher education institutions. In this study, we investigate the impact of counselling instances supported by a learning analytics (LA) tool, called TrAC, which provides specific data about the curriculum and grades of each student. To evaluate the tool, we measured changes in students' performance ranking position over 3 years and compared the performance of students who received counselling with and without the tool. Our results show that using the tool is related to an improvement in cohort ranking. We further investigated the characteristics of counselled students using cluster analyses. The findings highlight the potential beneficial influence on academic outcomes arising from the provision of guidance to students regarding their course load decisions via TrAC-mediated counselling. This study contributes to the field of LA by providing evidence of the impact of counselling supported by an LA tool in a real-world setting over a long period of time. Our results suggest that incorporating LA into academic counselling practices can improve student success.

8. Sources Contributing to Engineering Students' Academic Well-Being: An Exploration Using the Q Methodology

Abstract

Background: Recent literature has identified students' academic well-being as an indicator of their persistence in their current study and competence development. While prior literature has focused on measuring students' academic well-being from psychological and mental health perspectives, limited studies have explored the ways in which the learning environment provides diverse sources (e.g., supervision and peer support) to support students' academic well-being. Purpose: This study aims to explore sources that foster students' academic well-being from the perspective of two different student groups, namely first-year engineering students and senior engineering students, in a PBL (project-based learning) environment. Method: The Q methodology was applied, connecting both qualitative and quantitative research characteristics. Two student groups, including 23 first-year engineering students and 19 senior engineering students, participated in this study to illustrate various viewpoints of different student groups and offer prospects for analyzing data from a new comparative angle via second-order factor analysis. Results: In the first-year engineering student group, three viewpoints were identified, namely the emphasis on enjoyment through study-life balance, personal values and aspirations, and academic agency. The senior engineering student group focused on internal sources related to professional development, including two viewpoints pertaining to their goal-oriented academic development and enactment of agency through self-management. Practical suggestions are proposed to optimize engineering curriculum design to better support students' academic well-being.

In response to the prevailing challenges in contemporary software development, this article introduces an innovative approach to code augmentation centered around Impermanent Identifiers. The primary goal is to enhance the software development experience by introducing dynamic identifiers that adapt to changing contexts, facilitating more efficient interactions between developers and source code, ultimately advancing comprehension, maintenance, and collaboration in software development. Additionally, this study rigorously evaluates the adoption and acceptance of Impermanent Identifiers within the software development landscape. Through a comprehensive empirical examination, we investigate how developers perceive and integrate this approach into their daily programming practices, exploring perceived benefits, potential barriers, and factors influencing its adoption. In summary, this article charts a new course for code augmentation, proposing Impermanent Identifiers as its cornerstone while assessing their feasibility and acceptance among developers. Abstract

Perovskite structure materials based on the Ba1-xGdxTiO3 system, where x = 0.001, 0.002, 0.003, 0.004 and 0.005, were prepared via the Pechini chemical synthesis route. The dielectric properties have been analyzed over a wide temperature and frequency range, revealing a significant contribution of the conduction mechanisms in the dielectric response of the studied ceramics. In fact, by using the Davidson-Cole formalism, the observed electrical behavior was found to be associated with relaxation processes related to intrinsic defects mobility promoted by a thermally-activated polaronic mechanism. The obtained values of the activation energy for the relaxation processes, estimated from the Arrhenius law for the mean relaxation time, revealed a decrease from 0.29 up to 0.21 eV as the Gd-doping concentration increases, which suggests the conduction process to be associated with the polaronic effects due to the coexistence of Ti4+ and Ti3+ ions in the structure. Analysis from the conductivity formalism, by using the Jonscher universal power-law, confirmed the polaron-type conduction mechanism for the dielectric dispersion, as suggested by the dielectric analysis, being the nature of the hopping mechanism governed by small polaron hopping (SPH) charge transport in the studied Ba1-xGdxTiO3 ceramics., Comment: 26 pages, 9 figures, 1 table
