Direct geological information in Antarctica is limited to ice free regions along the coast, high mountain ranges, or isolated nunataks. Therefore, indirect methods are required to reveal subglacial geology and heterogeneities in crustal properties, which are critical steps toward interpreting geological history. We present a 3D crustal model of density and susceptibility distribution in the Wilkes Subglacial Basin (WSB) and the Transantarctic Mountains (TAM) based on joint inversion of airborne gravity and magnetic data. The applied "variation of information" technique enforces a coupling between inferred susceptibility and density, relating these quantities to the same gravity and magnetic sources to give an enhanced inversion result. Our model reveals a large body located in the interior of the WSB interpreted as a batholithic intrusive structure, as well as a linear dense body at the margin of the Terre Adélie Craton. Density and susceptibility relationships are used to inform the interpretation of petrophysical properties and the reconstruction of the origin of those crustal bodies. The petrophysical relationship indicates that the postulated batholitic intrusion is granitic, but independent from the Granite Harbor Igneous Complex described previously in the TAM area. Emplacement of a large volume of intrusive granites can potentially elevate local geothermal heat flow significantly. Finally, we present a new conceptual tectonic model based on the inversion results, which includes development of a passive continental margin with seaward dipping basalt horizons and magmatic underplating followed by two distinct intrusive events associated with the protracted Ross Orogen. Rocks simultaneously influence the gravity and magnetic fields through their physical properties (density and susceptibility). Here we use both the gravity and magnetic fields to reveal rock provinces beneath the ice and use the relationship between density and susceptibility of the rocks to interpret the distribution of granitic rocks of the Transantarctic Mountains and the Wilkes Subglacial Basin region in East Antarctica. Granitic rocks can lead to elevated heat flow due to radiogenic decay of minerals within the rock and thus influence the overlying ice sheet. Based on our subsurface model of rock provinces we speculate on the tectonic evolution of the region. Bedrock geology from Antarctica remains largely unknown since it is hidden beneath thick ice sheets. Geophysical methods such as gravity and magnetic inverse modelling provide a framework to infer crustal rock properties indirectly in Antarctica. However, due to limited availability of rock samples, validation against direct geological information is challenging. We present a new rock property catalogue containing density and susceptibility measurements on 320 rock samples from northern Victoria Land. This catalogue is used to assess the reliability of local and regional scale inverse results, including a new local high resolution magnetic inversion in the Mesa Range region and a previously published regional scale joint inversion of gravity and magnetic data in northern Victoria Land and the Wilkes Subglacial Basin. We compare our density and susceptibility measurements to global and local measurements from the literature to access the correlation to rock types and geological units. Furthermore, the measured values are compared against inverted values. The close correspondence between inverted and measured rock properties allows us to predict locations of rock types where currently such information is missing. The utility of measured susceptibility and density relationships for interpreting inversion output provides a strong incentive to incorporate local rock samples into geophysical studies of subglacial geology across Antarctica. The importance of the arid interior of southern Africa for human evolution has come into focus in recent years. However, the current distribution of archaeological sites is limited to the southern margin of the Kalahari sediments in South Africa and to the northern part of Botswana. Surface scatters of archaeological artefacts in other parts of the Kalahari have not been studied systematically despite their potential to test human adaptation to marginal environments in the past. We developed a mobile Geographical Information System (GIS) set-up that allows us to record the archaeological potential of Botswana's southwestern Kgalagadi district in a rapid and standardised manner. This paper describes five archaeological sites identified through our survey in the wider area around the town of Tsabong. Four of these sites, as well as the majority of identified surface archaeology, belong to the Middle Stone Age based on a first assessment of their lithic typology. A pattern is emerging of particular concentration of these sites on or near quartzite outcrops that are located next to pans. Additionally, six test pits confirmed the high potential for further archaeological investigations in this area using a landscape approach. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Whilst systematic reviews, meta-analyses and other forms of synthesis are considered amongst the most valuable forms of research evidence, their limited impact on educational policy and practice has been criticised. In this article, we analyse why systematic reviews do not benefit users of evidence more consistently and suggest how review teams can optimise the impact of their work. We introduce the "Beyond Synthesis Impact Chain" ("BSIC"), an integrated framework of practical strategies for enhancing the impact of systematic reviews. Using examples from health professions education, we propose that review teams can optimise the impact of their work by employing strategies that (1) focus on practical problems and mindful planning in collaboration with users; (2) ensure reviews are relevant and syntheses reflexively account for users' needs; and (3) couch reports in terms that resonate with users' needs and increase access through targeted and strategic dissemination. We argue that combining practical principles with robust and transparent procedures can purposefully account for impact, and foster the uptake of review evidence in educational policy and practice. For systematic review teams, this paper offers strategies for enhancing the practical utility and potential impact of systematic reviews and other forms of synthesis.

An expedition to confirm the presence of underwater hazards was carried out in Halmahera waters, Indonesia, to the west of Halmahera Island from August to September 2021. The expedition carried out a multibeam survey, surface-towed magnetic survey, and seafloor sampling. A ~ 615-m-tall conical feature with traces of hydrothermal activity was discovered. The feature is bounded on the southeastern (SE) side by a series of normal faults at the peak, with possible dextral strike-slip faults traced west of the feature. The feature displays the potential presence of volcanic rocks based on the observed contrasting magnetic anomaly signature of down to − 100 nT, which at the magnetic equator corresponds to the presence of highly magnetised material. Four 2.5-D magnetic models were built to test various scenarios on the subsurface structure of the feature, mainly focusing on the presence of volcanic rocks at different epochs and a possible presence of serpentinisation. X-ray diffraction (XRD) of the silt and clay sediments sampled confirms traces of late-stage hydrothermal activity, indicated by a high percentage of quartz (53.87%), followed by calcite (34.56%), kaolinite (6.54%), and illite minerals (5.04%). Non-carbonate materials are yet to be found in the sampled sand and gravel sediments, which mainly consist of shell and coral fragments. The discovery of the conical feature, now termed the Yudo Sagoro Hill, provides new information on the structure and activities on the seafloor of Halmahera waters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

High Energy Physics (HEP) software environments often involve ∼ hundreds of external packages and libraries, and similar numbers of experiment-specific, science-critical packages—many under continuous development. Managing coherent releases of the external software stack is challenging enough, but managing the highly-collaborative—and distributed—development of a large body of code against such a stack adds even more complexity and room for error. Spack is a popular Python-based package management tool with a specific focus on the needs of High Performance Computing (HPC) systems and system administrators whose strength is orchestrating the discrete download, build, testing, and installation of pre-packaged or tagged third-party software against similarly stable dependencies. As such it is becoming increasingly popular within HEP as that community makes increasing use of HPC facilities, and as efforts to develop future HPC systems utilize Spack to provide scientific software on those platforms [1]. SpackDev is a system to facilitate the simultaneous development of interconnected sets of packages. Intended to handle packages without restriction to one internal build system, SpackDev is integrated with Spack as a command extension in order to leverage features such as dependency calculations and build system configuration, and is generally applicable outside HEP. We describe SpackDev’s features and development over the last two years, initial experience using SpackDev in the context of the LArSoft liquid argon detector toolkit, and work remaining before it can be considered a fully-functional multi-package build system for HEP experiments utilizing Spack.

This qualitative study examined the impact of a six-step framework for work-specific vocabulary instruction in adult English language learners (ELLs). Guided by research in English as a second language (ESL) methodology and the transactional theory, the researchers sought to unveil how these processes supported the acquisition and application of work-specific vocabulary in three adult ELLs. Data were collected in two levels, before and after training. The first data analysis identified and used two themes to develop training modules' curriculum: (a) policies and procedures related to state and federal regulations and (b) customer service. After participants completed training, the second data analysis identified two additional themes transcending across the three cases: (a) employees' views in English language proficiency skills and (b) growth in writing within their own continuum of English language development. Data revealed how an explicit, work-specific vocabulary instruction approach has the potential to increase ELLs' varying levels of English language proficiency, acquisition, and application of work-specific vocabulary, and, simultaneously, confidence in how they view and use English in the workplace.

The art event-based analysis framework is used by multiple Intensity Frontier and other experiments and projects in High Energy Physics (HEP). A system of tools and scripts based around a Fermilab-originated package management system called UNIX Product Support (UPS) has evolved to provide development, packaging, release management, and distribution of the art suite, related experimental software and external dependencies in relocatable binary form. The existing system has limitations in environments such as macOS with System Integrity Protection (SIP) enabled and the various High Performance Computing (HPC) systems that the field of HEP is increasingly looking to leverage. This has led to a search for other ways of providing experiments with a packaging and build system that meets their needs. We describe our efforts to develop a packaging and release management system based on the Spack HPC package management tool to replace the existing UPS-based system. We additionally describe a companion system: SpackDev and cetmodules, allowing simultaneous development of multiple HEP software packages in a consistent environment. A successful implementation of the intended system would have applicability across HEP rather than merely to the users of the art framework.

This letter urges younger scholars in the Azusa Street tradition to take seriously their calling to the church, providing a critical description of Pentecostal theological education and offering a vision of a promising future. In agreement with Cheryl Bridges Johns, the letter argues that Pentecostal seminaries, colleges, and universities not only should exist, they can deliver a recognizably Pentecostal theological education, training ministers to do their sacred work in ways faithful to the distinctive spirituality of the Azusa Street tradition. The Transantarctic Mountains (TAMs) separate the warmer lithosphere of the Cretaceous‐Tertiary West Antarctic rift system and the colder and older provinces of East Antarctica. Low velocity zones beneath the TAM imaged in recent seismological studies have been interpreted as warm low‐density mantle material, suggesting a strong contribution of thermal support to the uplift of the TAM. We present new Curie Point Depth (CPD) and geothermal heat flow (GHF) maps of the northern TAM and adjacent Wilkes Subglacial Basin (WSB) based exclusively on high resolution magnetic airborne measurements. We find shallow CPD and high GHF beneath the northern TAM, reinforcing the hypothesis of thermal support of the topography of the mountain range. Additionally, this study demonstrates, that limiting spectral analysis to areas with a high density of aeromagnetic measurements increases the resolution of CPD estimates revealing localized shallow CPD and associated high heat flow in the Central Basin of the WSB and the Rennick Graben (RG). Across the study area the CPD ranges from 15 to 35 km and the GHF values range from 30 to 110 mW/m2. The recovered CPD range is compatible with recent Moho depth estimates, as the CPD predominantly lies within the crust, rather than in the magnetite‐poor mantle. GHF estimates, based on the CPD estimates, show a good agreement to sparse in situ GHF measurements and the location of active volcanoes. Comparison to existing continent‐wide GHF estimates shows strong differences from magnetically‐derived heat flow estimates, while seismologically‐derived heat flow estimates show the best agreement to our results. Recent studies found regions where acoustic waves move slowly beneath the TAM. Slow wave speeds are considered to be caused by warmer rocks at depth, which provide thermal support for the TAM. We present heat flow maps for this region. The estimated heat flow is based on "Curie Point Depths" (CPDs), which describes the depth at which magnetic rocks lose their magnetic properties due to increasing temperature. This temperature is called the Curie temperature (∼580°C for magnetite, the most common magnetic mineral in the Earth's crust). The heat flow at the surface is estimated from the depth at which this temperature is reached. We use for the first time for a CPD study in Antarctica exclusively high‐resolution magnetic data measured from aircraft. We demonstrated that limiting this method to airborne data improves the resolution of CPD variation, and thus heat flow estimates, substantially. We find shallow CPD and high heat flow beneath the TAM, which supports the suggestion that warmer rocks provide thermal support for the TAM. Additionally, we find high heat flow in the adjacent Wilkes Subglacial Basin and Rennick Graben. This paper takes as its starting point the current situation in regards to labour and protest within the context of the U.K. specifically in relation to Higher Education. After more than six years of working on precarious contracts (whilst also engaged with part-time PhD research) across numerous Universities, the author recently moved onto a permanent contract. My aim is to think through the possible ways that art and performance might offer alternatives to a life filled with work. I begin by looking at some specific examples of where artists have reflected on work and labour. In doing so, I am then able to move into an analysis of the exhibition After Work by Célline Condorelli (with Ben Rivers and Jay Bernard) held at South London Gallery between March and June 2022 to suggest possible futures of work and the way that it is presented in practice, a future that might push away from our current culture of over work and one that might shift to finding more space for leisure and play. These suggestions open up possible small solutions to much bigger problems. In addition, I will also draw upon In the Meantime, Midday Comes Around an international exhibition exploring the changes to work over the last decade. This document is an editorial that explores the concept of the future and its impact on political thought and practice. It argues that the future, which was once seen as a source of hope and revolution, has been lost and squandered in the current era of financial capitalism. The editorial also discusses the end of history and the failures of neoliberal capitalism, which has led to wealth disparity, ecological disaster, and the erosion of public services. Despite these challenges, the document highlights the potential of art and performance to imagine and create a better world. It also acknowledges the violence and crises happening globally, but emphasizes the calls for peace and change that continue to emerge. The document concludes by introducing various essays and contributions that explore different ways to reimagine the future, including discussions on transitioning, alternative economic models, striking as performance, post-work theory, and the challenges of techno-necro-capital.
