Abstract

Understanding the propagation of high power mm-wave in plasmas is of tremendous importance in the route to fusion considering their extensive use in magnetically confined fusion devices. Mm-beams, launched from the outside of the vessel must propagate through plasma edge-turbulence before reaching their target region. Until recently, the effect of edge-turbulence on the beam propagation was neglected, but it has been estimated for ITER that it could lead to significant differences in the time-averaged and instantaneous beam profiles, leading to a loss of efficiency in their use. In this paper, we present first direct experimental measurements of high power beam after propagation in simple magnetized toroidal plasmas in TCV.

Abstract

The sawtooth period control in tokamak is important issue in recent years because the sawtooth crash can trigger TM/NTM instabilities and drive plasmas unstable. The control of sawtooth period by the modification of local current profile near the q=1 surface using ECCD has been demonstrated in a number of tokamaks [1, 2] including KSTAR. As a result, developing techniques to control the sawtooth period as a way of controlling the onset of NTM has been an important area of research in recent years [3]. In 2012 KSTAR plasma campaign, the sawtooth period control is carried out by the different deposition position of EC waves across the q=1 surface. The sawtooth period is shortened by on-axis co-ECCD (destabilization), and the stabilization of the sawtooth is also observed by off-axis co-ECCD at outside q=1 surface. In 2013 KSTAR plasma campaign, the sawtooth locking experiment with periodic forcing of 170 GHz EC wave is carried out to control the sawtooth period. The optimal target position which lengthens the sawtooth period is investigated by performing a scan of EC beam deposition position nearby q=1 surface at the toroidal magnetic field of 2.9 T and plasma current of 0.7 MA. The sawtooth locking by the modulated EC beam is successfully demonstrated as in [3-5] with the scan of modulation-frequency and duty-ratio at the low beta (βN~0.5) plasma. In this paper, the sawteeth behavior by the location of EC beam and the preliminary result of the sawtooth locking experiments in KSTAR will be presented.

Abstract

Electron cyclotron waves injected from an antenna located in the upper part of the vessel will be employed in ITER to controlMHD instabilities, particularly neoclassical tearingmodes (NTMs). The derivation of the NTM stabilization criteria used up to now to guide the optimization of the launcher is reviewed in this paper and their range of validity elucidated. Possible effects leading to a deterioration of the predicted performance through a broadening of the EC deposition profile are discussed. The most detrimental effect will likely be the scattering of the EC beams from density fluctuations, resulting in a beam broadening in the 100% range. The combined impact of these effects with that of beam misalignment (with respect to the targeted surface) is discussed for a time slice of the standard Q = 10 H-mode scenario.

Abstract

A retroreflecting ellipsometer has been constructed for measuring the birefringence of optical disk substrates. In contrast to conventional ellipsometers with two mechanical arms, this system has only one arm along which both the incident and reflected beams travel. This construction eliminates the mechanical limitations of conventional ellipsometers, thereby permitting normal incidence on the sample. In addition, the single arm is adjustable in two dimensions, with the polar incident angle, [[Theta].sub.inc], varying from 0 [degrees] to 70 [degrees] , and the azimuthal incident angle, [[Phi].sub.inc], varying from 0 [degrees] to 360 [degrees] . The condition of normal incidence permits accurate measurement of in-plane birefringence. The adjustability of both [[Theta].sub.inc] and [[Phi].sub.inc] is necessary for the measurement of possible tilts of the index ellipsoid, and also for the variation of birefringence through the substrate thickness. Measurement results showing the useful features of the equipment are presented. The optics of the hemispherical assembly used for retroreflection as well as for the elimination of undesirable refractions are also studied by use of the ZEMAX lens design program.
