Abstract Plasma wakefield acceleration revolutionized the field of particle accelerators by generating gigavolt-per-centimeter fields. To compete with conventional radio-frequency (RF) accelerators, plasma technology must demonstrate operation at high repetition rates, with a recent research showing feasibility at megahertz levels using an Argon source that recovered after about 60 ns. Here we report about a proof-of-principle experiment that demonstrates the recovery of a Hydrogen plasma at the sub-nanosecond timescale. The result is obtained with a pump-and-probe setup and has been characterized for a wide range of plasma densities. We observed that large plasma densities reestablish their initial state soon after the injection of the pump beam ( 13 ns). The results are supported with numerical simulations and represent a step forward for the next-generation of compact high-repetition rate accelerators.

Particle-driven plasma wakefield acceleration (PWFA) exploits the intense wakefields excited in a plasma by a high-brightness driver beam in order to accelerate a trailing, properly delayed witness electron beam. Such a configuration offers notable advantages in achieving very large accelerating gradients that are suitable for applications in particle colliders and photon production. Moreover, the amplitude of the accelerating fields can be enhanced by resonantly exciting the plasma using a multi-pulse driver beam with a proper time structure. Before the injection into the plasma stage, the pulsed electron beam, conventionally termed the comb beam, is usually produced and pre-accelerated in a radio-frequency (RF) linear accelerator (linac). In this pape, we discuss challenging aspects of the dynamics that comb beams encounter in the RF injector stage preceding the plasma. In particular, the examples we analyze focus on the use of velocity bunching to manipulate the time structure of the beam and the impact of dipole short-range wakefields on the transverse emittances. Indeed, both processes crucially affect the phase space distribution and its quality, which are determinant features for an efficient acceleration in the plasma. In addition, the analyses we present are performed with the custom tracking code MILES, which utilizes semi-analytical models for a simplified evaluation of wakefield effects in the presence of space charge forces.

The first generation of S-band injectors for free-electron lasers has illustrated high reliability and performance by driving the latest generation of high brightness machines. However, the ultimate electron beam brightness of these devices is limited by the electric field that they can achieve on the cathode. With the aim of a higher beam brightness at SwissFEL, this paper presents the design of a C-band traveling-wave (TW) radio-frequency photogun that aims to offer the possibility to move to a cathode gradient up to 200 MV/m. This increased gradient comes from the ability to operate with rf pulse lengths approximately an order of magnitude shorter than the current state-of-the-art room-temperature S-band standing-wave rf photoguns. With this high cathode gradient, this novel gun is able to produce an electron bunch whose 5D beam brightness is 5 times greater than the current SwissFEL photogun. Furthermore, the low power dissipation within the photogun, resulting from the short rf pulse length and TW philosophy, opens up the opportunity for rf pulse repetition rates up to 1 kHz.

C-band technology is emerging as an exciting innovative approach to the creation of compact new accelerators. Besides the possibility to sustain higher gradients and higher repetition rate operation at normal conducting temperature, it also allows one to increase the machine performance in terms of beam brightness. We propose the design study of a normal conducting, high gradient C-band injector aiming at the production of high brightness electron beams—up to 2.6×10^{3} TA/m^{2}—at high repetition rate—up to 1 KHz—as desired to enhance the capabilities of modern radiation sources. This paper reports on beam dynamics studies that guided the injector design looking for a good compromise between the machine compactness and performances. For this purpose, a new standing wave C-band gun consisting of 2.6 cells has been designed to enhance the final beam brightness together with its own mode launcher to ensure the needed peak field at the cathode—up to 180 MV/m. Several working points in terms of peak current, transverse emittance and brightness are explored, showing the flexibility allowed by the proposed photoinjector. The integration of the gun mode launcher, that relies on a four-port configuration, in the injector design and its effect on the beam quality are also reported.

According to recent studies, there are almost 435 million people worldwide with diabetes mellitus. It is estimated that of these 148 million will develop Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) during their lifetime, of which 35 to 50% will be infected. In this scenario, the presence and frequency of pathogenic microorganisms and their level of susceptibility to the most frequent classes of antibiotics used to treat this pathological condition from patients with DFUs admitted to the outpatient clinic of vascular surgery of the Federico II University Hospital of Naples from January 2019 to March 2021 were investigated. Furthermore, the diabetic population characteristics under study (i.e., general, clinical, and comorbidities) and the pathogenic bacteria isolated from lesions were also considered. Bacterial strains poorly susceptible to antibiotics were more frequent in polymicrobial infections than in monomicrobial infections. β-Lactams showed the highest levels of resistance, followed by fluoroquinolones, aminoglycosides, and finally macrolides. The main findings of the study demonstrated that the occurrence of resistant microorganisms is the dominant factor in ulcer healing; thus it is essential to investigate the antibiotics’ susceptibility before setting antibiotic therapy to avoid inappropriate prescriptions that would affect the treatment and increase the development and spread of antibiotic resistance.

The production of high spectral brilliance radiation from electron beam sources depends critically on the electron beam qualities. One must obtain very high electron beam brightness, implying simultaneous high peak current and low emittance. These attributes are enabled through the use of very high field acceleration in a radio-frequency (rf) photoinjector source. Despite the high fields currently utilized, there is a limit on the achievable peak current in high brightness operation, in the range of tens of Ampere. This limitation can be overcome by the use of a hybrid standing wave/traveling wave structure; the standing wave portion provides acceleration at a high field from the photocathode, while the traveling wave part yields strong velocity bunching. This approach is explored here in a C-band scenario, at field strengths (>100 MV/m) at the current state-of-the-art. It is found that one may arrive at an electron beam with many hundreds of Amperes with well-sub-micron normalized emittance. This extremely compact injector system also possesses attractive simplification of the rf distribution system by eliminating the need for an rf circulator. We explore the use of this device in a compact 400 MeV-class source, driving both inverse Compton scattering and free-electron laser radiation sources with unique, attractive properties.

The high longitudinal electric fields generated in plasma wakefields are very attractive for a new generation of high gradient plasma based accelerators. On the other hand, the strong transverse fields increase the demand for a proper matching device in order to avoid the spoiling of beam transverse quality. A solution can be provided by the use of a plasma ramp, a region at the plasma injection/extraction with smoothly increasing/decreasing plasma density. The transport of a beam inside a plasma ramp, beside its parameters, depends on the profile of the ramp itself. Establishing the transfer matrix for a plasma ramp represent a very useful tool in order to evaluate the beam evolution in the plasma. In this paper a study of a cosine squared ramp is presented. An approximate solution of the transverse equation of motion is evaluated and exploited to provide a simple transfer matrix for the plasma ramp. The transfer matrix is then employed to demonstrate that this kind of ramp has the effect to minimize the emittance growth due to betatron dephasing. The behavior of a squared cosine plasma ramp will be compared with an experimentally measured plasma ramp profile in order to validate the applicability of the transfer matrix to real cases. Next-generation plasma-based accelerators can push electron beams to GeV energies within centimeter distances. The plasma, excited by a driver pulse, is indeed able to sustain huge electric fields that can efficiently accelerate a trailing witness bunch, which was experimentally demonstrated on multiple occasions. Thus, the main focus of the current research is being shifted towards achieving a high quality of the beam after the plasma acceleration. In this paper we present a beam-driven plasma wakefield acceleration experiment, where initially preformed high-quality witness beam was accelerated inside the plasma and characterized. In this experiment the witness beam quality after the acceleration was maintained on high level, with 0.2% final energy spread and 3.8 μm resulting normalized transverse emittance after the acceleration. In this article, for the first time to our knowledge, the emittance of the plasma wakefield accelerated beam was directly measured.

The CompactLight European consortium is designing a state-of-the-art X-ray free-electron laser driven by radiofrequency X-band technology. Rooted in experimental data on photo-injector performance in the recent literature, this study estimates analytically and numerically the performance of the CompactLight delivery system for bunch charges in the range 75–300 pC. Space-charge forces in the injector, linac transverse wakefield, and coherent synchrotron radiation in bunch compressors are all taken into account. The study confirms efficient lasing in the soft X-rays regime with pulse energies up to hundreds of microjoules at repetition rates as high as 1 kHz.

The present work reports on Yttrium based photocathodes. A Yttrium (Y) thin film is deposited via pulsed laser deposition (PLD) on the copper (Cu) back flange of a radio frequency (rf) gun for photocathode application. Because of a lower work function with respect to Cu, Y photocathodes are particularly appealing for the possibility to illuminate them with visible laser pulses, with the advantage of a higher energy per pulse, paving the way to high repetition rate photoinjectors, driven by conventional laser sources. In addition, working at λ∼400 nm the small energy difference between the Y work function (about 3 eV) and the laser photon energy reduces the contribution of the intrinsic emittance of the material. Photoelectrons, emitted by the thin film Y photocathode driven by the second harmonic of a Ti:Sapphire laser, have been characterized in terms of quantum efficiency and transverse emittance. Results have been compared with the theoretical ones obtained by the three-step model of Spicer for metallic photocathodes.

From plasma-wakefield acceleration as a physics experiment toward a plasma-based accelerator as a user facility, the beam physics issues remaining to be solved are still numerous. Providing beams with high energy, charge, and quality simultaneously, not only within the plasma but also at the user doorstep itself, is the main concern. Despite its tremendous efficiency in particle acceleration, the wakefield displays a complex 3D profile which, associated to the beam-loading field induced by the accelerated beam itself, makes the acceleration of high charge to high energy often incompatible with high beam quality. Beam extraction from the plasma without quality degradation for a transfer either to the next plasma stage or to the user application is another difficulty to consider. This article presents the substantial studies carried out and the different innovative methods employed for tackling all these different issues. Efforts focused on achieving the challenging beam parameters targeted by the EuPRAXIA accelerator facility project. The lessons learned at the end of these in-depth simulations and optimizations are highlighted. The sensitivity to different error sources is also estimated to point out the critical components of such an accelerator. Finally, the needs in terms of laser and plasma parameters are provided.

Isolated abdominal aortic dissection is a rare clinical disease representing only 1.3% of all dissections. There are a few case series reported in the literature. The causes of this pathology can be spontaneous, iatrogenic, or traumatic. Most patients are asymptomatic and symptoms are usually abdominal or back pain, while claudication and lower limb ischemia are rare. Surgical and endovascular treatment are two valid options with acceptable results. We herein describe nine cases of symptomatic spontaneous isolated abdominal aortic dissection, out of which four successfully were treated with an endovascular approach between July 2003 and July 2013. All patients were men, smokers, symptomatic (either abdominal or back pain or lower limb ischemia), with a history of high blood pressure, with a medical history negative for concomitant aneurysmatic dilatation or previous endovascular intervention. Diagnosis of isolated abdominal aortic dissection were established by contrast-enhanced computed tomography angiography (CTA) of the thoracic and abdominal aorta. All nine patients initially underwent medical treatment. In four symptomatic cases, non-responsive to medical therapy, bare-metal stents or stent grafts were successfully positioned. All patients completed a CTA follow-up of at least 12 months, during which they remained symptom-free. Endovascular management of this condition is associated with a high rate of technical success and a low mortality; therefore, it can be considered the treatment of choice when it is feasible.

Generation of a well-aligned bunch train is of vital importance for preserving the beam quality in a plasma wake-field accelerator. The simultaneous measurements of the relative misalignments in both planes, of the individual femtosecond electron bunches with THz repetition rate in a train, are reported and analyzed with simulations. The new method proposed in this paper demonstrates that the measurements can be done quickly by applying a single quadrupole scan together with a radio-frequency deflector (RFD), while the RFD strength and the RFD phase for each bunch do not need to be known.

The purpose of this paper is to report a salvage maneuver for accidental coverage of both renal arteries during endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) of an infrarenal abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). A 72-year-old female with a 6 cm infrarenal abdominal aortic aneurysm was treated by endovascular means with a standard bifurcated graft. Upon completing an angiogram, both renal arteries were found to be accidentally occluded. Through a left percutaneous brachial approach, the right renal artery was catheterized and a chimney stent was deployed; however this was not possible for the left renal artery. A retroperitoneal surgical approach was therefore carried out with a retrograde chimney stent implanted to restore blood flow. After three months, both renal arteries were patent and renal function was not different from the baseline. Both endovascular with percutaneous access via the brachial artery and open retroperitoneal approaches with retrograde catheterization are feasible rescue techniques to recanalize the accidentally occluded renal arteries during EVAR.
