The limitations of current treatment strategies for cancer management have prompted a significant shift in the research and development of new effective strategies exhibiting higher efficacy and acceptable side effects. In this direction, nanotheranostics has gained significant interest in recent years, combining the diagnostic and therapeutic capabilities of nanostructures for efficient disease diagnosis, treatment, and management. Such nano-assisted platforms permit the site-specific release of bioactive cargo in a controlled fashion while permitting non-invasive real-time in situ monitoring. A plethora of materials has been developed as pharmacologically relevant nanoformulations for theranostic applications ranging from metallic to lipid and polymer-based composite systems, with each offering potential opportunities and its own limitations. To improve advancements with better clarity, the main focus of this review is to highlight the recent developments focusing on using different noble metal nanoparticles (noble MNPs) as cancer nanotheranostic agents, highlighting their properties, advantages, and potential modifications for their successful utilization in personalized medicine. The advantage of using noble metals (not all, but those with an atomic number ≥76) over metal NPs is their tendency to provide additional properties, such as X-ray attenuation and near-infrared activity. The combination of these properties translates to noble MNPs for therapeutic and diagnostic applications, independent of the need for additional active molecules. Through this review, we highlighted the potential application of all noble MNPs and the limited use of osmium, iridium, palladium, rhodium, and ruthenium metal NSs, even though they express similar physicochemical characteristics. Some freshwater teleost fish have pigment cells whose arrangement and shape are affected by the environment. Natural light has a wide range of light intensity. Fish are sensitive to the background and exposed light colour. Fish body colour is a significant criterion in fixing its market value, whether it is ornamental or edible. By favourable light exposure, a culturist may get a good market value of fish on most ethical grounds. In this study, we recorded the changes in melanophore response with the changes in light colour on Channa punctata. Adult fish were treated with monochromatic lights (darkness, white, blue and red light) for 5 and 28 days. After treatment, their body colour and melanophore size, number, length and the number of dendrites were studied. The results showed a significant influence of monochromatic light on melanophore arrangement in fish skin. The data showed that blue light is appropriate for the overall species colour of photic C. punctata. Continuous black or white light caused severe damage to the fish's appearance. Different camouflages work best with some background matching colour. Our understanding of the evolution of skin colour is based mainly on the genetics of pigmentation ("background matching"), with little known about the evolution of the neuroendocrine systems that facilitate "background adaptation" through colour phenotypic plasticity. To address the latter, we studied the evolution in vertebrates of three genes, pomc, pmch and pmchl, that code for α‐MSH and two melanin‐concentrating hormones (MCH and MCHL). These hormones induce either dispersion/aggregation or the synthesis of pigments. We find that α‐MSH is highly conserved during evolution, as is its role in dispersing/synthesizing pigments. Also conserved is the three‐exon pmch gene that encodes MCH, which participates in feeding behaviours. In contrast, pmchl (known previously as pmch), is a teleost‐specific intron‐less gene. Our data indicate that in zebrafish, pmchl‐expressing neurons extend axons to the pituitary, supportive of an MCHL hormonal role, whereas zebrafish and Xenopus pmch+ neurons send axons dorsally in the brain. The evolution of these genes and acquisition of hormonal status for MCHL explain different mechanisms used by vertebrates to background‐adapt. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In a fully randomized design, the effects of salinities at concentrations of 0 (control), 15, 35 and 50 ppt on feeding, growth performance, body composition, plasma glucose and cortisol levels in Asian sea bass (Lates calcarifer) of 34.36±0.41 gram initial weight were investigated in 300-liter pvc tanks. Feedinng was done to satiation twice a day for 30 days. At the end of the experiment, biometry was carried out and plasma and carcass samples were collected. The results showed significant difference in feeding and growth performance in 0 (control) with other treatments (p < 0.05). Carcass analyze also showed significantly higher moisture percentage compared to other treatments (p < 0.05). Glucose and cortisol values in 15 ppt treatment were significantly higher than at 35, 50 ppt treatment and 35 ppt and control treatments, respectively (p < 0.05). Overall, this study showed that this species was able to tolerate changes in salinity in the surrounding medium from seawater to brackish water through a period of 30 days and successfully adapt to freshwater without mortality. But, it could not be a good candidate for freshwater culture because of high energy expenditure for osmoregulation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The influence of light colours on growth and stress response in rainbow trout Oncorhyncus mykiss (15.16 ± 0.29 cm; 32.27 ± 1.18 g) was studied. Fish were reared in 16 glass aquaria (140 × 30 × 80 cm) each with 12 fish under one of four different lighting spectra: yellow (546 nm), red (605 nm), blue (470 nm) and white (full spectrum, control). Experiments lasted 125 days. The stress response was evaluated by measuring cortisol levels. Body weight and total length of the fish reared under yellow light were greater compared with the other colour regimes while feed conversion ratio significantly lowers. Condition factor and specific growth rate, however, were not differentiated among experimental light treatments. Stressed fish showed lower cortisol levels under yellow light compared with other light exposures. The study indicates that under laboratory conditions, rainbow trout grow best under yellow light and that yellow light lowers the stress-induced cortisol response in this fish species. The twin forces of payors seeking fair pricing and the rising costs of developing new medicines has driven a closer relationship between pharmaceutical companies and diagnostics companies, because stratified medicines, guided by companion diagnostics, offer better commercial, as well as clinical, outcomes. Stratified medicines have created clinical success and provided rapid product approvals, particularly in oncology, and indeed have changed the dynamic between drug and diagnostic developers. The commercial payback for such partnerships offered by stratified medicines has been less well articulated, but this has shifted as the benefits in risk management, pricing and value creation for all stakeholders become clearer. In this larger healthcare setting, stratified medicine provides both physicians and patients with greater insight on the disease and provides rationale for providers to understand cost-effectiveness of treatment. Intravenous infusion of angiotensin II ([Asn1 Val5]-Ang II) at 10−9 mol min−1 kg−1 body mass produced a significant antidiuresis in river lamprey Lampetra fluviatilis, captured during upstream migration and maintained in fresh water. Although the renin-angiotensin hormonal system (RAS) is now recognized in jawless fishes, until this study, the role of homologous Ang II in L. fluviatilis kidney function had not been examined. This study provides the first evidence for an antidiuretic action of Ang II in cyclostomes and, in evolutionary terms, suggests a renal function for the RAS in early vertebrates. The article presents a study which examined the effect of tank color on the survival and growth of larval white seabass, Atractoscion nobilis, which was cultured at the marine finfish hatchery of the Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute (HSWRI) in Carlsbad, California. It describes the methods used in larval egg collection and incubation using recirculated seawater in both blue and black tanks. The survival, growth, stress tolerance and data analysis of the study are detailed.

There is increasing concern about the effects of pile driving and other anthropogenic (human-generated) sound on fishes. Although there is a growing body of reports examining this issue, little of the work is found in the peer-reviewed literature. This review critically examines both the peer-reviewed and ‘grey’ literature, with the goal of determining what is known and not known about effects on fish. A companion piece provides an analysis of the available data and applies it to estimate noise exposure criteria for pile driving and other impulsive sounds. The critical literature review concludes that very little is known about effects of pile driving and other anthropogenic sounds on fishes, and that it is not yet possible to extrapolate from one experiment to other signal parameters of the same sound, to other types of sounds, to other effects, or to other species. Objective and methods: We explore the cash value of the companion diagnostics opportunity from the perspective of the pharmaceutical partner. Cashflow-based modeling is used to demonstrate the potential financial benefits of key relationships between the pharmaceutical and diagnostics industries. Results: In four scenarios, the uplift in the net present value (NPV) of a proprietary medicine can exceed $US1.8 billion. By simple extrapolation, the uplifted NPV calculations allow realistic and plausible estimates of the companion diagnostic opportunity to be in the region of $US40 billion to $US90 billion. Conclusion: It is expected that such market valuation could drive a macroeconomic change that shifts healthcare practice from reactionary disease-treatment to proactive health maintenance. Colour preference of individual juvenile rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss was tested at 1 and 12° C, and also at 12° C after a 42 day growth experiment under white, blue, green, yellow or red ambient colour. All experiments were carried out under controlled laboratory conditions and the preference was assessed by the location of the fish in a preference tank with four chambers. Rainbow trout showed a preference for blue and green at 1° C and for green at 12° C. After the growth experiment the fish reared in blue tanks preferred blue and green but green was the most preferred colour for the fish reared in green, yellow and red tanks. Yellow and especially red chambers were avoided, irrespective of the ambient colour during the growth trial. The final mass of fish reared in the red aquaria was significantly smaller than that of the fish in green tanks. In addition, when the data of the preference tests were correlated with the data of the growth experiment using mean values of the four tested colours, a very good linear relationship was observed between the preference ( i.e. visit frequency in coloured compartments) and growth rate as well as food intake. When considering the results both from the preference and growth trials it is suggested that green is the best environmental colour for rearing juvenile rainbow trout while rearing in a red environment cannot be recommended. Gas-fired power stations have recently come under the scrutiny of the UK Health and Safety Executive who have raised concerns over potential explosion risks. The gas turbines are usually housed within acoustic enclosures to protect the turbine and to reduce environmental noise. However, in the event of a gas leak, such enclosures may promote a build-up of gas and thus give rise to an explosion risk. This paper describes how General Electric, working with W.S. Atkins, have responded to these concerns. Examples are given of how computational fluid dynamics simulations and field measurements have been used to study the effectiveness of gas turbine compartment ventilation and gas detection systems.
