ABSTRACT Along the line that health-beneficial foods must also be accompanied by sustainable agricultural practices, the red alga Lithothamnium sp. (Rhodophyta), frequently used for animal and human nutrition, it was shown that it could be a biofertilizer, regarding their bioactive humic acid content, released by micronization. Also, onions present well-known benefits to health and are among the main vegetable crops grown worldwide. Thus, the objective this work was to evaluate the effects of foliar sprays with micronized Lithothamniun sp. on yield, mineral nutrients, flavonoids, phenolic content, and antioxidant activity before and after storage of bulbs of two organically grown onion cultivars. The yield, mineral content, antioxidant activity, and phenolic and flavonoid content in onion bulbs were improved through sprays, highlighting the dose of 1.5 g L-1 of Lithothamnium sp. in solution. Genotype interactions and storage effects were observed. The benefits with the use of Lithothamnium sp. as biofertilizer were towards the biofortification of organically grown onions by improving mineral nutrient acquisition as it was followed by upgrading antioxidant capacity.

The use of microalgae as natural biofertilizer in horticulture has recently been reported, while the use of humic substances is widespread. However, the combined use of microalgae with humic substances applied to plant leaves is still unexploited. Thus, the objective of this work was to combine fulvic acid (FA) with the Scenedesmus subspicatus microalga biomass (SC) as a natural biofertilizer applied via leaf in two onion cultivars in organic system. Four experiments were conducted: i) bioassays to verify the bioactive effect of FA, SC and combinations using the Vigna radiata model plant; ii) greenhouse pot experiment with foliar applications of FA, SC and combination in two onion cultivars; iii) field experiment in organic system with foliar applications of FA, SC and combination in two onion cultivars; and iv) onion bulb storage experiment. The bioactive effect of SC, FA and their combinations was identified by promoting changes in root growth of V. radiata. In pots, treatments containing FA, SC and combination promoted increase in fresh and dry leaf mass. The foliar application of FA, SC and combination promoted an increase in field bulb productivity, reduced mass loss in stored bulbs and increased carbohydrate, amino acid and protein contents in onion bulbs.

Seeking the development of nature-friendly agronomic techniques, the use of natural sources to promote plant growth and increase agricultural yield has gained relevance. In this context, the use of biofertilizers or biostimulants obtained from microalgae has been studied, as these microorganisms have in their composition a great diversity of bioactive molecules. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of microalga Asterarcys quadricellulare (CCAP 294/1) on organic onion production, verifying its action on metabolism, growth and yield of two cultivars. Thus, two experiments were carried out: (i) foliar applications on onion plants grown in pots in a greenhouse; (ii) foliar applications on field-grown onion under an organic system. Both experiments were undertaken using solutions with spray-dried microalga biomass at concentrations of 0.05, 0.15, 0.25 and 0.4 g L−1. Biometric variables, yield of bulbs and biochemical variables were evaluated indicating that the use of A. quadricellulare promoted plant growth and increases in bulb caliber and yield of both onion cultivars. The microalga biomass stimulated plant metabolism by increases in contents of chlorophyll, carotenoids, amino acids, and the nitrate reductase enzyme activity in leaves, also free amino acids and total sugar contents in bulbs, highlighting the biomass concentration of 0.25 g L−1.
