The joint management of IT and network resources is a key aspect for dynamic inter-data center interconnection networks designed to work according to the cloud computing paradigm. Such a scenario calls for the anycast routing of service requests to find a data channel that best suits both connectivity and IT resource requirements. This paper presents different network resource allocation and release policies across an inter-data center interconnection network aimed at a balanced accommodation of network resources to improve performance. Such policies are evaluated and compared in terms of service set-up blocking probability considering also configuration latency of real network devices that play a significant role along with network bandwidth availability across the network. Results show that the best choice is to release network resources as soon as possible, even though this means increasing the service blocking due to network reconfiguration latency. Due to environmental concerns and technological advances, Electric Vehicles (EVs) are rapidly gaining popularity. However, a public charging infrastructure should be deployed to increase the electrical range of EVs and foster their mass adoption. In addition, renewable energy resources shall be integrated in the charging infrastructure to reduce the negative impact of additional EV loads on the existing electric grid. On the other hand, renewable energy sources have intermittent and fluctuating power outputs and this may degrade charging waiting times and drivers' acceptance of the charging service. To address these issues, in this paper we describe a smart management system for regulating EV charging in a public charging infrastructure, which can contribute to mitigate the effect of fluctuating power sources on the charging waiting times. Furthermore, our results show that the proposed intelligent charging policies can satisfy in a timely manner drivers' charging requests with a limited deployment of additional resources. Recent studies about climate change are mandating a drastic reduction of green house gas (GHG) emissions. Solutions include the utilization of renewable energy sources (e.g., wind, solar energy) and the increased utilization of hybrid and electric vehicles (EVs). In this scenario ICT can play a significant role by fostering the smart utilization of current energy and transportation infrastructures (smart grid and smart cities). This paper presents a new ICT infrastructure to enable the intelligent exploitation of distributed energy resources in order to minimize the EV charging times while optimizing the efficiency of the electrical infrastructure. The proposed system is based on a distributed communication infrastructure (both wired and wireless) aimed at collecting/emitting bidirectional energy dispatching opportunities for electric vehicles. The envisaged system seamlessly interconnects emerging self-organizing wireless technologies (i.e., VANETs and Wireless Mesh Networks), with legacy wired communication technologies, to guarantee a fast rollout of the EV charging service with minimum investments in communication infrastructures. The performance of the proposed solution is evaluated in terms of its sustainability by analyzing the quality of the charging service as perceived by the users, and the capability of the charging infrastructure to meet the charging requests in a timely manner.
