We report on the technological commissioning of the Laser–Plasma Ion Accelerator section of the ELIMAIA user beamline at the ELI Beamlines facility in the Czech Republic. The high-peak, high-average power L3-HAPLS laser system was used with an energy of ~10 J and pulse duration of ~30 fs on target, both in single-pulse and high repetition-rate (~0.5 Hz) mode. The laser pulse was tightly focused to reach ultrahigh intensity on target (~1021 W/cm2) and sustain such laser–plasma interaction regime during high repetition-rate operations. The laser beam, ion beam, and laser–plasma emission were monitored on a shot-to-shot basis, and online data analysis at 0.5 Hz was demonstrated through the full set of used diagnostics (e.g., far and near field, laser temporal diagnostics, X- and gamma-ray detectors, Thomson Parabola ion spectrometer, time-of-flight ion detectors, plasma imaging, etc.). The capability and reliability of the ELIMAIA Ion Accelerator was successfully demonstrated at a repetition rate of 0.5 Hz for several hundreds of consecutive laser shots.

The main effort of the laser-driven ion acceleration community is aimed at improving particle beam features (in terms of final maximum energy, particle charge, and beam divergence) and to demonstrate reliable approaches for use for multidisciplinary applications. An ion acceleration target area based on unique laser capabilities is available at ELI-Beamlines (Extreme Light Infrastructure) in the Czech Republic; it is called ELIMAIA (ELI Multidisciplinary Applications of laser-Ion Acceleration) and aims to provide stable and characterized beams of particles accelerated by high-power lasers to offer them to the user community for interdisciplinary studies. The ELIMAIA section dedicated to ion focusing, selection, characterization, and irradiation is named ELIMED (ELI MEDical and multidisciplinary applications). Thanks to ELIMED, very high-dose-rate (around Gy/min) controlled proton and ion beams, with energy levels ranging from 5 to 250 MeV, will be transported to an in-air section dedicated to absolute and relative dosimetry of the laser-generated ions. A transmission dual-gap air ionization chamber will allow an on-line, non-destructive characterization of the ion dose at the user sample irradiation point. The uncertainty in the final dose released onto the sample is expected to be well below 5%. An ELIMED radiobiology pilot experiment is scheduled for 2021, during which in-vitro cell irradiations will be carried out with well-controlled proton beams. In this work, the status of the ELIMED/ELIMAIA beamline will be described along with a complete definition of the main dosimetric systems and of their calibrations carried out at conventional accelerators.

We present preliminary results on generation of energetic α-particles driven by lasers. The experiment was performed at the Institute of Laser Engineering in Osaka using the short-pulse, high-intensity, high-energy, PW-class laser. The laser pulse was focused onto a thin plastic foil (pitcher) to generate a proton beam by the well-known TNSA mechanism which, in turn, was impinging onto a boron-nitride (BN) target (catcher) to generated alpha-particles as a result of proton-boron nuclear fusion events. Our results demonstrate generation of α-particles with energies in the range 8–10 MeV and with a flux around 5 × 109 sr−1.

The TERESA (TEstbed for high REpetition-rate Sources of Accelerated particles) target area, recently commissioned with the L3-HAPLS laser at Extreme Light Infrastructure (ELI)-Beamlines, is presented. Its key technological sections (vacuum and control systems, laser parameters and laser beam transport up to the target) are described, along with an overview of the available plasma diagnostics and targetry, tested at relativistic laser intensities. Perspectives of the TERESA laser–plasma experimental area at ELI-Beamlines are briefly discussed.

Charged particle acceleration using ultra-intense and ultra-short laser pulses has gathered a strong interest in the scientific community and it is now one of the most attractive topics in the relativistic laser-plasma interaction research. Indeed, it could represent the future of particle acceleration and open new scenarios in multidisciplinary fields, in particular, medical applications. One of the biggest challenges consists of using, in a future perspective, high intensity laser-target interaction to generate high-energy ions for therapeutic purposes, eventually replacing the old paradigm of acceleration, characterized by huge and complex machines. The peculiarities of laser-driven beams led to develop new strategies and advanced techniques for transport, diagnostics and dosimetry of the accelerated particles, due to the wide energy spread, the angular divergence and the extremely intense pulses. In this framework, the realization of the ELIMED (ELI-Beamlines MEDical applications) beamline, developed by INFN-LNS (Catania, Italy) and installed in 2017 as a part of the ELIMAIA beamline at the ELI-Beamlines (Extreme Light Infrastructure Beamlines) facility in Prague, has the aim to investigate the feasibility of using laser-driven ion beams in multidisciplinary applications. ELIMED will represent the first user’s open transport beam line where a controlled laser-driven ion beam will be used for multidisciplinary and medical studies. In this paper, an overview of the beamline, with a detailed description of the main transport elements, will be presented. Moreover, a description of the detectors dedicated to diagnostics and dosimetry will be reported, with some preliminary results obtained both with accelerator-driven and laser-driven beams.

Laser wake field acceleration (LWFA) is an efficient method to accelerate electron beams to high energy. This is a benefit in research infrastructures where a multidisciplinary environment can benefit from the different secondary sources enabled, having the opportunity to extend the range of applications that is accessible and to develop new ideas for fundamental studies. The ELI Beamline project is oriented to deliver such beams to the scientific community both for applied and fundamental research. The driver laser is a Ti:Sa diode-pumped system , running at a maximum performance of 10 Hz, 30 J, and 30 fs. The possibilities to setup experiments using different focal lengths parabolas, as well as the possibility to counter-propagate a second laser beam intrinsically synchronized, are considered in the electron acceleration program. Here, we review the laser-driven electron acceleration experimental platform under implementation at ELI Beamlines, the HELL (High-energy Electrons by Laser Light) experimental platform .

ELI (Extreme Light Infrastructure) multidisciplinary applications of laser-ion acceleration (ELIMAIA) is one the user facilities beamlines of the ELI-Beamlines facility in Prague. It will be dedicated to the transport of laser-driven ion beams and equipped with detectors for diagnostics and dosimetry, in order to carry out experiments for a broad range of multidisciplinary applications. One of the aims of the beamline is also to demonstrate the feasibility of these peculiar beams for possible medical applications, which means delivering controllable and stable beams, properly monitoring their transport parameters and accurately measuring the dose per shot. To fulfil this task, innovative systems of charged particle beam diagnostics have been realized and alternative approaches for relative and absolute dosimetry have been proposed. Concerning the first one, real-time diagnostic solutions have been adopted, involving the use of time-of-flight techniques and Thomson parabola spectrometry for an on-line characterization of the ion beam parameters, as well as radiochromic films, nuclear track detectors (typically CR39), and image plates for single shot measurements. For beam dosimetry, real-time beam/dose monitoring detectors have been realized, like the secondary emission monitor and a double-gap ionization chamber, which can be cross calibrated against a Faraday cup, used for absolute dosimetry. The main features of these detectors are reported in this work together with a description of their working principle and some preliminary tests.

The main direction proposed by the community of experts in the field of laser-driven ion acceleration is to improve particle beam features (maximum energy, charge, emittance, divergence, monochromaticity, shot-to-shot stability) in order to demonstrate reliable and compact approaches to be used for multidisciplinary applications, thus, in principle, reducing the overall cost of a laser-based facility compared to a conventional accelerator one and, at the same time, demonstrating innovative and more effective sample irradiation geometries. The mission of the laser-driven ion target area at ELI-Beamlines (Extreme Light Infrastructure) in Dolní Břežany, Czech Republic, called ELI Multidisciplinary Applications of laser-Ion Acceleration (ELIMAIA) , is to provide stable, fully characterized and tuneable beams of particles accelerated by Petawatt-class lasers and to offer them to the user community for multidisciplinary applications. The ELIMAIA beamline has been designed and developed at the Institute of Physics of the Academy of Science of the Czech Republic (IoP-ASCR) in Prague and at the National Laboratories of Southern Italy of the National Institute for Nuclear Physics (LNS-INFN) in Catania (Italy). An international scientific network particularly interested in future applications of laser driven ions for hadrontherapy, ELI MEDical applications (ELIMED), has been established around the implementation of the ELIMAIA experimental system. The basic technology used for ELIMAIA research and development, along with envisioned parameters of such user beamline will be described and discussed.

Radar target simulators are not only a critical tool for verifying and testing radar systems but also play an important role in supporting the development of self-driving cars. Advances in radar sensors and techniques raise the required specifications for these units, increasing their complexity and cost. This article presents a novel and universal concept for radar target simulators that addresses these issues by responding only to the transmitted signal of a radar sensor during a fraction of the time, therefore modulating the average of the signal. This offers advantages for three independent use cases, which may be combined. First, the dynamic range and resolution of simulated target echo power can be improved even for existing systems. Second, the simulation of multiangle scenarios with a single backend is possible with this approach. Finally, hardware complexity and power consumption can be reduced. The proposed concept is examined extensively for frequency-modulated continuous wave radar, and design decisions are made. The theoretical considerations are validated with measurements with a real radar target simulator showing an improvement of up to $30 \,\mathrm{dB}$ in the dynamic range with no observable negative side effects.

Recently, a novel chipless radio-frequency identification (RFID) concept based on polarimetric radar barcodes was introduced. These tags are similar to the well known optical quick response codes (QR codes). In polarimetric radar barcodes the information is stored as polarimetrically coded areas arranged in a grid and read out by an imaging radar. This paper presents a novel concept for elegantly creating polarimetric barcodes based on dipole scattering domains. Each scattering domain consists of several hundred dipoles. The dipoles are either uniformly arranged at a specific angle, which produces a specific angle-dependent polarization response, or randomly oriented to produce an unpolarized response. In order to read out the polarimetric information stored in the tags, the position and rotation of the radar barcodes needs to be determined. Our research reveals that using three reference elements and a novel decoding algorithm, a position- and rotation-tolerant readout is possible. To reduce distortions caused by the surface of the structure carrying the dipoles, different matching layer concepts were investigated. The novel chipless RFID tag concept is tested using a fully polarimetric W-band (75-$110 \,\mathrm{G}\mathrm{Hz}$) imaging radar. The implemented setup allows for a theoretical data capacity of $1.92 \,\mathrm{bit} \mathrm{/}\mathrm{c}\mathrm{m}^{2}\,$ on a single layer PCB. In our measurements, we achieved a data capacity of $1.52 \,\,\mathrm{bit} \mathrm{/}\mathrm{c}\mathrm{m}^{2}\,$. Utilizing the chosen tag size of $45 \,\mathrm{m}\mathrm{m} \times 45 \,\mathrm{m}\mathrm{m}$ resulted in a tag with a greater than 30 bit data capacity, which is an excellent value for chipless RFID.

Modern sensor networks—those used for autonomous driving, security systems, human motion tracking, or smart city/smart factory applications—are shifting to a more centralized data processing approach to enable efficient multimodal sensor fusion for optimal environment perception in complex dynamic situations. Among lidars and cameras, radars are typical for these applications, but they generate huge amounts of data, which cannot be transmitted or stored effectively in current setups. Consequently, manufacturers usually have to process the data “on sensor.” This results in transmitting only a few extracted features as point clouds or object lists to a central processing unit, which usually causes a significant loss of information. With this approach, advanced processing—such as enhancement of resolution by coherent combination of sensors or ghost target removal with advanced algorithms—is hardly possible. To overcome this, we suggest an alternative method by using signal-based compression with defined losses. The following topology will be proposed: the sensors encode raw data without prior radar-specific processing and after transmission, a central unit decodes and processes the radar data, thus benefiting from its more powerful heterogeneous processing system. We will analyze lossless compression algorithms with rate savings of about 30% to 65%, but the focus is on lossy compression algorithms that incorporate higher compression ratios by allowing negligible errors. It is shown that state-of-the-art multimedia compression algorithms can obtain rate savings of 99%, and radar specific algorithms can add a 50-fold gain on top, reaching 99.98%. To assess the distortions of compressed data, we then present different radar-specific evaluation metrics.

In coherent continuous-wave (CW) radar systems, such as frequency-modulated CW (FMCW) radar systems, measurement precision is distorted by phase noise and systematic phase errors during radar signal generation. Unfortunately, to date, these phase distortions have typically been modeled based on many simplifications, often leading to overoptimistic predictions of radar performance. For example, phase noise is regularly considered based on additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) models, ignoring its colored spectral property. Systematic errors are also frequently not properly separated from stochastic distortions, or not precisely measured and modeled. To overcome these issues, an advanced CW radar and frequency synthesizer model is proposed, analyzed, and experimentally verified in this paper. It is shown how systematic phase errors can be measured and how the influence of phase distortions on radar measurement can be accurately predicted. The proposed modeling approach was investigated for range correlation and range precision. The key metrics are the phase noise power spectral density (PSD) for range correlation and the variance of the frequency estimate for range precision. A 24-GHz FMCW radar system was used for the experimental verification. Long-range radar targets with distances of 38 to 880 m were created with an analog fiber optical link. Therefore, a precise and systematic evaluation of all effects was possible. The proposed phase distortion modeling approach realistically represented the range-dependent radar measurement effects. This enables the most precise simulation of and prediction for FMCW radar performance to date.

In radar and communication systems, phase noise is one of the main causes of performance degradation. Phase noise increases the uncertainty in radar measurements and limits the achievable data rates in communication systems. When radio frequency (RF) signals distorted by bandlimited phase noise are modeled, the phase noise power spectral density (PSD) is usually approximated by a scalar root-mean-square (RMS) phase error derived from a simple integration of the PSD. This disregards the close-to-carrier noise excess. In this article, we show that this convention simplification describes the real behavior of phase noise inadequately. In addition, we present a simulation of realistic phase noise behavior. The novel additive colored noise (ACN) model requires a representative phase noise PSD of the phase-locked loop (PLL) signal generator phase noise to be modeled. The developed ACN approach is validated by comparing the measured PSD of different PLL signal generators with the respective simulated RF signals distorted by phase noise. As a simple metric for assessing the quality of the phase noise models, we use the influence of phase noise on carrier frequency estimation. It is shown that the novel approach shows a significant improvement in the agreement between the simulated and measured precision compared to standard additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) models. The results show that advanced phase noise models, as proposed in this paper, are necessary to adequately model and predict the performance of radar and communication systems.

In this paper, we introduce an ultra-high frequency radio frequency identification (UHF-RFID) mobile robot platform that is capable of performing fully autonomous inventory taking and stocktaking by providing three-dimensional (3D) product maps and thus making possible the concept of a smart warehouse. The proposed novel hardware architecture consists of an eight-channel UHF-RFID-listener for parallel signal phase recovery, including two different carrier leakage suppression circuits and a correlation decoder for each channel for the tag signal, which can handle a backscatter link frequency (BLF) deviation of up to 22 % to decode the tag data. The system also uses eight parallel channels for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) localization. For the system evaluation we labeled clothes stored in a warehouse with tags and generated their product map. The proposed localization algorithm is based on a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) MIMO approach that needs exact knowledge of the antenna positions and, therefore, of the driven trajectory. This position is provided by the robot, which takes advantage of a simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) algorithm, determining the position with 1 cm accuracy while generating two-dimensional (2D) maps of the surroundings. We placed ten tags at known positions to assess the system's performance and were able to locate these tags within a root mean square error (RMSE) of 1.45 cm in 3D.

The generation of gravitational waves by laser accelerated relativistic ions is investigated. The piston and light sail models of laser plasma acceleration are considered, and analytical expressions for space-time metric perturbation are derived. For both models, the dependence of gravitational wave amplitude on the laser and plasma parameters as well as gravitational wave spectrum and angular distribution is examined. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Subsurface radar imaging provides an insight into hidden scenes: For example, in security screening, radar can be used for the detection of dangerous objects or contraband. In non-destructive testing, radar imaging also allows to find internal material defects such as cracks or contaminations. Object contours and internal structures appear as echoes in the radar receive signal. The strongest echo typically is the one from the test object's surface. This echo can mask smaller echoes close to the surface and therefore, small inner structures may become invisible in the reconstruction image. To overcome this problem, we propose a novel concept to eliminate the surface echo in radar imaging. In contrast to existing surface elimination techniques, our approach can be used not only when screening objects with planar surfaces, but also on such that exhibit an unknown and possibly non-planar profile. Our approach is to combine radar and air-coupled ultrasound. Since air-coupled ultrasound cannot penetrate into solids, the receive signal only contains the echo from the test object's surface. The core of our concept is to generate radar and ultrasound signals with the same characteristics, i.e. they are equal in amplitude and phase. Then, the ultrasound data can be subtracted from the radar data and the resulting signal will only contain the echoes of the inner structures. When processing this data, the reconstructed images are almost free of reflections from the surface.

We study two counter-propagating electromagnetic waves in the vacuum within the framework of the Heisenberg–Euler formalism in quantum electrodynamics. We show that the nonlinear field equations decouple for ordinary wave case and can be solved exactly. We solve the nonlinear field equations assuming the solution in a form of a Riemann wave. We discuss the properties of the nonlinear electromagnetic wave propagating in the quantum vacuum, such as the wave steepening, subsequent generation of high order harmonics and electromagnetic shock wave formation with electron–positron pair generation at the shock wave front. The impact of stochasticity effects (SEs) in photon emissions on the proton energy spectra during laser-plasma interaction is theoretically investigated in the quantum radiation-dominated regime. We calculate the photon emissions quantum mechanically and the plasma dynamics semiclassically via two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations. An ultrarelativistic plasma generated and driven by an ultraintense laser pulse head-on collides with another strong laser pulse, which decelerates the electrons due to radiation-reaction effect and results in a significant compression of the proton energy spectra because of the charge separation force. In the considered regime the SEs are demonstrated in the shift of the mean energy of the protons up to hundreds of MeV. This effect is robust with respect to the laser and target parameters and measurable in soon available strong laser facilities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
