Using the census enumerators' books for the second half of the nineteenth century, this study examines migration to and from Bidford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire. It takes advantage of recently available individual-level electronic databases to trace out-migran ts from Bidford. The results confirm some widely-held generalisations (such as females moving more than males), but also highlight the importance of circulatory movement within the countryside, and the fact than economic factors may not always have been paramount in determining migration patterns. This paper sets out a short–cut method for allocating country level GDP estimates across regions. Comparing UK regional GDP estimates generated using the short–cut method against existing regional GDP figures suggests that it produces acceptable results. We make estimates of GDP for the four countries of the UK for each of the census years between 1861 and 1911. Irish GDP per worker and per caput grew faster than British. These indicators demonstrate weak convergence of the two regions. The bulk of the Irish performance may be explained by traditional forces such as TFP growth and capital accumulation. Objectives: This study was undertaken to determine the prevalence of self-reported physical abuse among women seeking gynecologic and obstetric emergency care services.Study Design: A voluntary self-administered anonymous questionnaire was given to all women seeking treatment at the Gynecologic and Obstetric Emergency Clinic at Grady Memorial Hospital during the month of April 1991. The survey respondents were divided into 4 abuse categories.Results: Among the 452 respondents to the survey, 181 women (40.1%) gave a history of abuse. Among these, 93 women (51.3%) were currently in an abusive relationship, 45 women (24.9%) were currently in an abusive relationship and had a history of abuse, and 43 women (23.8%) had a history of abuse. The most common injuries described were fractures. Men were more likely not to have received counseling.Conclusions: The topic of domestic violence must be incorporated into the medical education curriculum and should be taught through a multidisciplinary approach. It is the purpose of this paper to suggest that BCG while correctly pointing to the importance of real wages in the labour-supply decision have ignored a second important influence, namely the effects of legislative and administrative changes in the rules governing access to unemployment benefit. The effect of these changes, it will be argued, was to make unemployment benefit easier to obtain in the period after 1930 and thereby to increase the propensity for unemployed persons to register at exchanges with consequent expansionary effects on the labour force.
In Section II the nature and definition of the participation rate is discussed, and data on the participation rate for the UK during the interwar period is presented. The participation rate is then analysed and related to unemployment (Section III). In Section IV an additional explanation is suggested, namely that changes in unemployment insurance legislation and administration significantly affected the participation rate through their effects on the level of unemployment registration. The British Team at the 9th Paralympic Games in September 1992 in Barcelona comprised 151 men and 54 women athletes in a total of 15 sports. They were supported by a staff of 86 including a 12-strong medical team. The athletes were selected from the National Championships of the five disability organizations: British Wheelchair Sports Federation; British Blind Sport; Cerebral Palsy Sport; British Amputee Sports Association; and the British Les Autres Sports Association. This article outlines the organization and experience of the medical support team. The injury/illness profile was similar to those in able bodied sport. The team went on to achieve 40 gold, 47 silver and 41 bronze medals, maintaining third place on the medal table as achieved in Seoul in 1988. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
