Mistletoes are xylem-tapping hemiparasites that rely on their hosts for water and nutrient uptake. Thus, they impair tree performance in the face of environmental stress via altering the carbon and water relations and nutritional status of trees. To improve our understanding of physiological responses to mistletoe and ongoing climate change, we investigated radial growth, stable carbon and oxygen isotopic signals, and elemental composition of tree rings in silver fir (Abies alba Mill.) and Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) forests infested with Viscum album L. We compared temporal series (1990–2020) of basal area increment (BAI), intrinsic water-use efficiency (iWUE), oxygen isotope composition (δ18O), nutrient concentrations and stoichiometric ratios between non-infested (NI) and severely infested (SI) fir and pine trees from populations located close to the xeric distribution limit of the species in north-eastern Spain. The SI trees showed historically higher growth, but the BAI trend was negative for more than three decades before 2020 and their growth rates became significantly lower than those of NI trees by the mid-2010s. Mistletoe infestation was related to an enhanced sensitivity of radial growth to vapour pressure deficit (atmospheric drought). The SI trees showed less pronounced iWUE increases (fir) and lower iWUE values (pine) than NI trees. The lower tree-ring δ18O values of SI trees may be the result of several superimposed effects operating simultaneously, including leaf-level evaporative enrichment, source water isotopic signals, and anatomical and phenological differences. We observed a deterioration of potassium (K) nutrition in tree-ring wood of both species in SI trees, along with accumulation of manganese (Mn). We suggest that such nutritional patterns are driven by the indirect effect of mistletoe-induced drought stress, particularly in pine. The combined analyses of different physiological indicators imprinted on tree rings provided evidence of the progressive onset of carbon, water and nutrient imbalances in mistletoe-infested conifers inhabiting seasonally dry regions. Forest dynamics are driven by micro‐disturbances leading to gap formation. Root rot pathogens can cause mortality to adult trees, which die forming gaps. However, little is known about the biotic and abiotic factors that govern gap creation and expansion such as tree infection or drought resilience, and what are the consequences for nutrient cycling and soil microbiota.We studied the dynamics of gaps created by Heterobasidion abietinum in mountain silver fir (Abies alba) forests from the Spanish Central Pyrenees. Tree‐ring width information was used to evaluate growth patterns of trees located within and at the edge of gaps and under closed canopy conditions. We analysed soil nutrient content and microbial structure at different positions with respect to the gap. Soil fungal community was also characterized by sequencing the ITS2 region.Gaps created by H. abietinum ranged 582–1072 m2 and gathered large amounts of standing and laying dead wood biomass amounting to up to 500 m3 ha−1 of coarse woody debris. This indicates that tree mortality had been occurring over decades, and it was preceded by a long‐term growth decline and impaired drought resilience. Root rot affected trees beyond the current limit of the gaps leading to growth decline, preventing canopy closure and allowing the release of suppressed trees within the gap. Gap formation did neither affect soil fertility nor fungal and bacterial biomass and diversity, but long‐distance ectomycorrhizal fungi were more abundant within gaps.Synthesis. Root rot pathogens play key ecological roles in forest dynamics at fine spatial scale. Heterobasidion abietinum infection, and its interaction with drought, creates and expands gaps by killing large trees and preventing surrounding trees from closing the gap. Anticipating future impacts of climate warming and aridification on drylands requires understanding how coexisting woody plant species respond to climate variability. However, we lack knowledge of the growth resilience capacity of Mediterranean shrubs. Do coexisting trees and shrubs differ in their response to climate? Do coexisting shrub species have comparable post‐drought growth resilience?This study was conducted in two Mediterranean shrublands with sparse trees in semi‐arid north‐eastern Spain. We selected sites situated in formerly agricultural or grassland areas in two regions subjected to semi‐arid Mediterranean climate conditions. We sampled six shrubs' species (Juniperus phoenicea, Juniperus oxycedrus, Pistacia lentiscus, Pistacia terebinthus, Rhamnus lycioides and Rhamnus alaternus) and one tree species (Pinus halepensis) to measure their radial growth and to reconstruct their past growth patterns using dendrochronology. We quantified climate–growth relationships of trees and shrubs, as well as the growth resilience capacity after drought events of the six shrubs.Growth patterns differed between species but a prevalent trade‐off between growth and longevity was found. Growth responses to climate were comparable between species but differed between sites. Most species responded positively to precipitation and negatively to temperature. The most negative correlations of growth with drought severity were found at the driest Valcuerna site. Shrubs differed in their resilience capacity. Across sites, species were more resistant and resilient in Alcubierre, the wettest site. The shrubs P. terebinthus and R. lycioides were more resistant and resilient than the rest of species, which required longer growth recovery times and accumulated stronger growth reductions, particularly J. phoenicea.Synthesis. These results highlight the importance of drought as a driver of growth in Mediterranean scrublands. Growth resilience strategies differed between species with junipers being less resilient to drought than other coexisting shrubs. Given the context of significant global warming and the intensification of extreme climate events in the last century, large‐scale reforestation and afforestation have been recognized as effective strategies to mitigate the climate crisis. Since the 1970s, China has launched several afforestation programs aimed at regional ecological protection, playing an important role in reaching carbon neutrality by 2060. This study provided a detailed analysis of the growth suitability of the main planted conifers (Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica and Pinus tabulaeformis) and broadleaves (Populus spp., Robinia pseudoacacia) in the semi‐arid northern China. We compared the radial growth trends of plantations and their responses to extreme droughts from 1980 to 2018. Growth of most plantations has significantly increased over time, but broadleaves showed recent growth reductions in the past decade, which may be related to tree age and reduced soil moisture. Nevertheless, under warmer climate scenarios, the growth of plantations is forecasted to continue increasing. Broadleaves showed a better post‐drought recovery, probably linked to their anisohydric behavior, than conifers, which presented a better resistance to drought. Growth of conifers depended more on warmer temperature and better precipitation conditions during the growing season, whereas broadleaves mainly reacted to warm temperature. Additionally, pre‐drought growth levels weakened resilience components, while post‐drought precipitation compensated for drought‐induced growth deficit. Growth and resilience were negatively related to tree age, while higher stand density reduced growth. This assessment and projections of growth and drought resilience indicate the sustainability of most plantations in semi‐arid regions, but future warmer and drier conditions may lead to an uncertain future regarding forest health and reduce their carbon sink potential. Introduction: Plantations located outside the species distribution area represent natural experiments to assess tree tolerance to climate variability. Climate change amplifies warming-related drought stress but also leads to more climate extremes. Methods: We studied plantations of the European larch (Larix decidua), a conifer native to central and eastern Europe, in northern Spain. We used climate, drought and tree-ring data from four larch plantations including wet (Valgañón, site V; Santurde, site S), intermediate (Ribavellosa, site R) and dry (Santa Marina, site M) sites. We aimed to benchmark the larch tolerance to climate and drought stress by analysing the relationships between radial growth increment (hereafter growth), climate data (temperature, precipitation, radiation) and a drought index. Results: Basal area increment (BAI) was the lowest in the driest site M (5.2 cm² yr-1; period 1988-2022), followed by site R (7.5 cm² yr-1), with the youngest and oldest and trees being planted in M (35 years) and R (150 years) sites. BAI peaked in the wettest sites (V; 10.4 cm² yr-1; S, 10.8 cm² yr-1). We detected a sharp BAI reduction (30% of the regional mean) in 2001 when springto-summer conditions were very dry. In the wettest V and S sites, larch growth positively responded to current March and June-July radiation, but negatively to March precipitation. In the R site, high April precipitation enhanced growth. In the driest M site, warm conditions in the late prior winter and current spring improved growth, but warm-sunny conditions in July and dry-sunny conditions in August reduced it. Larch growth positively responded to spring-summer wet conditions considering short (1-6 months) and long (9-24 months) time scales in dry (site M) and wet-intermediate (sites S and R) sites, respectively. Discussion: Larch growth is vulnerable to drought stress in dry slow-growing plantations, but also to extreme spring wet-cloudy events followed by dry-hot conditions in wet fast-growing plantations. Worldwide studies have related recent forest decline and mortality events to warmer temperatures and droughts, as well as pointing out a greater vulnerability to climate changes in larger trees. Previous research performed on silver fir (Abies alba Mill.) suggest an increasing decline and mortality, mainly related to rising water shortages. Here, we investigate these die-off events in two silver fir populations at the rear edge of the species in the western Pyrenees. We used dendrochronology to investigate tree age, size (diameter) and individual climate sensitivity (climate–growth relationships) as predisposing factors related to growth patterns and drought resilience indexes in canopy-level declining and non-declining trees. The regional climate was also investigated, including temperature trends, quantile regression in precipitation and frequency of extreme events in drought indexes (SPEI). The regional climate was characterized by an increase in mean temperatures and a higher frequency of extreme drought events in recent decades, without a decrease in total precipitation. Larger trees were more sensitive to temperature and prone to decline. Declining trees presented decreasing growth trends years ago, providing a robust predisposing trait. Both populations were not different in mean growth, despite the contrasting local climate and management legacies, although we identified a higher resilience to drought in the eastmost stand. A significant regression was found between growth trends and climate sensitivity, supporting that declining trees are more sensitive to warmer temperatures and drought. Hence, the results support a contrasting climate sensitivity related to tree size (but not to tree age), suggesting impending decline and mortality in large trees with higher temperature sensitivity (negative temperature–growth correlations). Summary: The climatic significance and ecosystem implications of latewood intra-annual density fluctuations (IADFs) are still not fully understood in Mediterranean ring-porous oak species. To solve this issue, we investigated: (i) the climate drivers of radial growth and latewood IADFs in the Mediterranean oak Quercus faginea , and (ii) whether they were correlated to increased canopy cover and greenness as recorded by the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). IADFs were formed in the mid to late latewood and they were characterized by rows of parenchyma cells. Such IADFs were uncommon and only present in 30–50% of sampled trees during 1999 and 2014, both years characterized by high precipitation in late July and early August. This relationship between IADFs formation and summer wet conditions differed from the conditions that enhance Q. faginea annual growth, wet winter-spring conditions, and low summer temperatures. Furthermore, IADFs formation showed a positive relationship with August NDVI values, indicating a correspondence of canopy greenness with secondary growth reactivation. We conclude that latewood IADFs in Q. faginea are a robust proxy of rare late-summer wet conditions and enhanced canopy activity as reflected by increased August NDVI values. Further monitoring of xylogenesis in other Mediterranean hardwoods along climatic gradients is suggested to mechanistically explain IADF production in seasonally dry biomes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We still lack information on the long-term growth responses to climate of relict tree populations, which often persist in topoclimatic refugia. To fill that research gap, we studied three relict cork oak (Quercus suber) populations located in northern Spain using dendrochronology. The sites were subjected to humid (Zarautz), continental (Bozoó) and xeric (Sestrica) climate conditions. Cool–wet conditions during the current spring enhanced growth in Bozoó and Sestrica, whereas wet conditions in the previous October enhanced growth in Zarautz. In this site, growth also increased in response to dry conditions in the prior winter linked to high North Atlantic Oscillation indices. Correlations between the precipitation summed from the previous September to the current May peaked at the driest site (Sestrica). The strongest growth responses to drought severity were also found at this site, where growth negatively responded to 9-month early-summer droughts, followed by the continental Bozoó site, where growth was constrained by 1-month July droughts. Growth declined in response to 6-month January droughts in the wettest site (Zarautz), where cork oak was vulnerable to previous late-summer to autumn drought stress. Despite warmer and drier spring conditions that would negatively impact cork oak at the Bozoó and Sestrica sites, trees from these populations could tolerate further aridity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
