Context. Supernova remnants (SNRs) are believed to be capable of accelerating cosmic rays (CRs) to PeV energies. SNR G106.3+2.7 is a prime PeVatron candidate. It is formed by a head region, where the pulsar J2229+6114 and its boomerang-shaped pulsar wind nebula are located, and a tail region containing SN ejecta. The lack of observed gamma ray emission from the two regions of this SNR has made it difficult to assess which region would be responsible for the PeV CRs. Aims. We aim to characterize the very-high-energy (VHE, 0.1–100 TeV) gamma ray emission from SNR G106.3+2.7 by determining the morphology and spectral energy distribution of the region. This is accomplished using 2565 days of data and improved reconstruction algorithms from the High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) Observatory. We also explore possible gamma ray production mechanisms for different energy ranges. Methods. Using a multi-source fitting procedure based on a maximum-likelihood estimation method, we evaluate the complex nature of this region. We determine the morphology, spectrum, and energy range for the source found in the region. Molecular cloud information is also used to create a template and evaluate the HAWC gamma ray spectral properties at ultra-high-energies (UHE, > 56 TeV). This will help probe the hadronic nature of the highest-energy emission from the region. Results. We resolve one extended source coincident with all other gamma ray observations of the region. The emission reaches above 100 TeV and its preferred log-parabola shape in the spectrum shows a flux peak in the TeV range. The molecular cloud template fit on the higher energy data reveals that the SNR's energy budget is fully capable of producing a purely hadronic source for UHE gamma rays. Conclusions. The HAWC observatory resolves one extended source between the head and the tail of SNR G106.3+2.7 in the VHE gamma ray regime. The template fit suggests the highest energy gamma rays could come from a hadronic origin. However, the leptonic scenario, or a combination of the two, cannot be excluded at this time. Context. Recently, the Nereides nebula was discovered through deep optical emission line observations and was classified as a supernova remnant (SNR) candidate, G107.7−5.1. Aims. Since very little is known about this SNR, we have looked at several archival datasets to better understand the environment and properties of the object. Methods. We present a detailed analysis of the gamma-ray emission detected by the Fermi Large Area Telescope in the region of the nebula. A model of the nonthermal emission is presented that allows us to derive the particle distribution responsible for the gamma rays. We also use molecular gas and atomic hydrogen observations to try to constrain the source age and distance. Results. An extended (∼2°) GeV source coincident with the location of the nebula is found. The nonthermal emission has a hard spectrum and is detected up to ∼100 GeV, confirming the SNR nature of this object. The GeV properties of G107.7−5.1 are similar to those of other SNRs such as G150.3​ + ​4.5, and it likely expands in a relatively low-density medium. The Nereides nebula is one more example of a growing population of dim SNRs detected at high energies. A simple leptonic model is able to account for the gamma-ray emission. Standard SNR evolutionary models constrain the age to be in the 10 − 50 kyr range, which is consistent with estimates of the maximum particle energy obtained from GeV observations. Context. High-energy (HE) and very high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray observations from the Galactic center (GC) detected extended emission correlated with the morphology of the central molecular zone (CMZ). Emission in both bands is expected to be produced by hadronic interaction between cosmic rays (CRs) and ambient gas. Aims. We examine if our three previously proposed scenarios for the CR sources and dynamics, which are consistent with the VHE gamma-ray data (1–100 TeV), also match the HE gamma-ray observations (10–300 GeV). Additionally, we analyze the effect of the isotropic Galactic CR "sea" inside the CMZ. Methods. We generated synthetic gamma-ray maps considering a simplified isotropic diffusion, but more realistic dynamics with two diffusion zones (in and out of the CMZ) and polar advection, for mono-energetic particles of 3 TeV. Additionally, we considered two gas distributions for the CMZ (with and without an inner cavity), and CR populations injected from the clusters of young massive stars (the Arches Cluster, the Quintuplet Cluster, and the nuclear star cluster), plus the supernova Sgr A East. Results. Only the combination of more realistic CR dynamics, the CMZ with an inner cavity, CR injection from all proposed sources, and a CR sea similar to that observed in the Solar System reproduced the current HE and VHE gamma-ray detection from the CMZ and was consistent with the observed gamma-rays from Sagittarius A*. Context. Estimation of the number of cosmic-ray-induced background events is a challenging task for Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs). Most approaches rely on a model of the background signal derived from archival observations, which is then normalised to the region of interest (ROI) and respective observation conditions using emission-free regions in the observation. However, this is disadvantageous for the analysis of large, extended γ-ray structures, where no sufficient source-free region can be found. Aims. We aim to address this issue by estimating the normalisation of a three-dimensional background model template from separate, matched observations of emission-free sky regions. As a result, the need for an emission-free region in the field of view of the observation becomes unnecessary. Methods. To this end, we implemented an algorithm to identify observation pairs with the most closely matching observation conditions. We used the open-source analysis package Gammapy to estimate the background rate, facilitating seamless adaptation of the framework to many γ-ray detection facilities. We employed public data from the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) to validate this methodology. Results. The analysis demonstrates that employing a background rate estimated through this run-matching approach yields results consistent with those obtained using the standard application of the background model template. Furthermore, we confirm the compatibility of the source parameters obtained through this approach with previous publications, and present an analysis employing the background model template approach, along with an estimation of the statistical and systematic uncertainties introduced by this method. Context. There is growing evidence from gamma-ray observations at high and very high energies that particle escape is a key aspect shaping the morphological properties of pulsar wind nebulae (PWNe) at various evolutionary stages. Aims. We aim to provide a simple model for the gamma-ray emission from these objects including the transport of particles across the different components of the system. We applied it to sources HESS J1809−193 and HESS J1825−137. Methods. We developed a multi-zone framework applicable to dynamically young PWNe, taking into account the diffusive escape of relativistic electron-positron pairs out of the nebula into the parent supernova remnant (SNR) and their confinement downstream of the magnetic barrier of the forward shock until an eventual release into the surrounding interstellar medium (ISM). Results. For a wide range of turbulence properties in the nebula, the GeV–TeV inverse-Compton radiation from pairs that escaped into the remnant can be a significant if not dominant contribution to the emission from the system. It may dominate the pion-decay radiation from cosmic rays accelerated at the forward shock and advected downstream of it. In the TeV–PeV range, the contribution from particles escaped into the ISM can exceed by far that of the SNR+PWN components. Applied to HESS J1809−193 and HESS J1825−137, we found that spatially extended GeV–TeV emission components can be accounted for mostly from particles escaped into the ISM, while morphologically more compact components above 50 − 100 TeV are ascribed to the PWNe. In these two cases, the model suggests high turbulence in the nebula and a forward shock accelerating cosmic rays up to ∼100 TeV at most. Conclusions. The model provides the temporal and spectral properties of the flux of particles originally energized by the pulsar wind and ultimately released in the ISM. It can be used to constrain the transport of particles in the vicinity of pulsar-PWN-SNR systems from broadband gamma-ray observations, or in studies of the contribution of pulsar-related systems to the local positron flux. While the data analysis of γ-ray telescopes has now become more robust, some signals may be misinterpretations of a time-variable foreground emission from the Solar system, induced by low-energy cosmic-ray interactions with asteroids. Our goal is to provide emission templates for this time-variable diffuse γ-ray foreground by considering the populations of Main Belt Asteroids, Jovian and Neptunian Trojans, Kuiper Belt Objects, and the Oort Cloud. We model the spatial distribution of all known asteroids by performing 3D-fits to determine their density profiles and calculate their appearances by line-of-sight integrations. Because Earth and the asteroids are moving with respect to each other, we obtain diffuse emission templates varying on time-scales of days to decades. We find that the temporal variability can lead to flux enhancements that may mimic emission features unless properly taken into account. This variation is further enhanced by the Solar cycle as the cosmic-ray spectrum is attenuated by the Solar modulation potential, leading to a relative flux increase of the outer asteroids. The cumulative effect of the time-dependent emission is illustrated for the case of the '511 keV OSSE fountain', and for emission features near the Galactic Centre, both being possible misinterpretations of the Solar system albedo. We recommend that γ-ray data analyses should always take into account the possibility of a time-variable foreground. Due to the ecliptic overlap with the Galactic plane, the Galactic emission is expected to be weaker by 0.1–20 per cent, depending on time (relative planetary motion), energy, and Solar cycle, which has consequences for the interpretation of dark matter annihilation cross sections, cosmic-ray spectra and amplitudes, as well as nucleosynthesis yields and related parameters. We present a search for intraday transient γ-ray signals using 15.4 yr of the Fermi Large Area Telescope data. The search is based on a recently developed variable-size sliding-time-window (VSSTW) analysis and is aimed at studying variable γ-ray emission from gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and the Sun. We refined the algorithm for searches for transient sources in order to solve the search problem within a reasonable amount of CPU time. These refinements allowed us to increase the number of gamma-ray bursts, solar flares, and quiescent solar events detected with the VSSTW technique by several times compared to the previous VSSTW search. The current search revealed a new γ-ray signal recorded with Fermi-LAT on 2018 January 12. This signal is probably from a GRB and deserves an exploration of the existing archival multiwavelength observations in order to identify it in an unambiguous way. We also report a γ-ray signal from the solar flare on 2023 December 31 that occurred during the 25th solar cycle. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

NGC 1068 is a nearby, widely studied Seyfert II galaxy presenting radio, infrared, X-ray, and γ-ray emission, along with strong evidence for high-energy neutrino emission. Recently, the evidence for neutrino emission was explained in a multimessenger model, whereby the neutrinos originate from the corona of the active galactic nucleus. In this environment, γ-rays are strongly absorbed, so that an additional contribution is necessary, for instance, from the circumnuclear starburst ring. In this work, we discuss whether the radio jet can be an alternative source of the γ-rays between about 0.1 and 100 GeV, as observed by Fermi-LAT. In particular, we include both leptonic and hadronic processes, namely, accounting for inverse Compton emission and signatures from pp as well as pγ interactions. In order to constrain our calculations, we used VLBA and ALMA observations of the radio knot structures, which are spatially resolved at different distances from the supermassive black hole. Our results show that the best leptonic scenario for the prediction of the Fermi-LAT data is provided by the radio knot closest to the central engine. For that to be the case, a magnetic field strength of ∼1 mG is needed as well as a strong spectral softening of the relativistic electron distribution at (1 − 10) GeV. However, we show that neither such a weak magnetic field strength, nor such a strong softening is expected for that knot. A possible explanation for the ∼10 GeV γ-rays could potentially be provided by hadronic pion production in case of a gas density ≳104 cm−3. Nonetheless, this process is not found to contribute significantly to the low-energy end of the Fermi-LAT range. Context. The presence of clouds during observations with Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes can strongly affect the performance of the instrument due to additional absorption of light and scattering of light beyond the field of view of the instrument. If not corrected for, the presence of clouds leads to increased systematic errors in the results. Aims. One approach to correct for the effects of clouds is to include clouds in Monte Carlo simulations to produce models for primary particle classification, and energy and direction estimation. However, this method is challenging due to the dynamic nature of cloudy conditions and requires extensive computational resources. The second approach focuses on correcting the data themselves for cloud effects, which allows the use of standard simulations. However, existing corrections often prioritise the limitation of systematic errors without optimising overall performance. By correcting the data already at the image level, it is possible to improve event reconstruction without the need for specialised simulations. Methods. We introduce a novel analysis method based on a geometrical model that can correct the data already at the image level given a vertical transmission profile of a cloud. Using Monte Carlo simulations of an array of four of the Large-Sized Telescopes of the Cherenkov Telescope Array, we investigated the effect of the correction on the image parameters and the performance of the system. We compared the data correction at the camera level with the use of dedicated simulations for clouds with different transmissions and heights. Results. The proposed method efficiently corrects the extinction of light in clouds, eliminating the need for dedicated simulations. Aims. We present the first multiwavelength study of Mrk 501 that contains simultaneous very-high-energy (VHE) γ-ray observations and X-ray polarization measurements from the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE). Methods. We used radio-to-VHE data from a multiwavelength campaign carried out between March 1, 2022, and July 19, 2022 (MJD 59639 to MJD 59779). The observations were performed by MAGIC, Fermi-LAT, NuSTAR, Swift (XRT and UVOT), and several other instruments that cover the optical and radio bands to complement the IXPE pointings. We characterized the dynamics of the broadband emission around the X-ray polarization measurements through its multiband fractional variability and correlations, and compared changes observed in the polarization degree to changes seen in the broadband emission using a multi-zone leptonic scenario. Results. During the IXPE pointings, the VHE state is close to the average behavior, with a 0.2–1 TeV flux of 20%–50% of the emission of the Crab Nebula. Additionally, it shows low variability and a hint of correlation between VHE γ-rays and X-rays. Despite the average VHE activity, an extreme X-ray behavior is measured for the first two IXPE pointings, taken in March 2022 (MJD 59646 to 59648 and MJD 59665 to 59667), with a synchrotron peak frequency > 1 keV. For the third IXPE pointing, in July 2022 (MJD 59769 to 59772), the synchrotron peak shifts toward lower energies and the optical/X-ray polarization degrees drop. All three IXPE epochs show an atypically low Compton dominance in the γ-rays. The X-ray polarization is systematically higher than at lower energies, suggesting an energy stratification of the jet. While during the IXPE epochs the polarization angles in the X-ray, optical, and radio bands align well, we find a clear discrepancy in the optical and radio polarization angles in the middle of the campaign. Such results further support the hypothesis of an energy-stratified jet. We modeled broadband spectra taken simultaneous to the IXPE pointings, assuming a compact zone that dominates in the X-rays and the VHE band, and an extended zone stretching farther downstream in the jet that dominates the emission at lower energies. NuSTAR data allow us to precisely constrain the synchrotron peak and therefore the underlying electron distribution. The change between the different states observed in the three IXPE pointings can be explained by a change in the magnetization and/or the emission region size, which directly connects the shift in the synchrotron peak to lower energies with the drop in the polarization degree. With almost 15 yr of data taken by the Large Area Telescope (LAT) onboard the Fermi satellite we discovered an extended source of GeV emission in the region of the very high energy (TeV) source 1LHAASO J1945+2424. This TeV source is more extended than the LAT source. The spectrum of the GeV emission is hard (with a photon spectral index ∼1.5) and connects smoothly with that of the TeV source, indicating a likely common origin. In order to explain the origin of the γ-rays we explore scenarios that are typically used for supernova remnants (SNRs) and pulsar wind nebulae (PWNe). For an SNR with a single particle population, a leptonic particle distribution in the form of a broken power law with a break energy of ∼3.7 TeV explains the spectra well, while in the hadronic scenario a simple power law with a hard spectral index of ∼1.64 is necessary. In the PWN scenario, reasonable parameters are obtained for a source age of 10 kyr and current pulsar spin-down luminosity of ∼1034 erg s−1. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Based on the expected population of core collapse supernova remnants and the huge number of detected pulsars in the Galaxy, still representing only a fraction of the real population, pulsar wind nebulae are likely to constitute one of the largest classes of extended Galactic sources in many energy bands. For simple evolutionary reasons, the majority of the population is made of evolved systems, whose detection and identification are complicated by their reduced luminosity, the possible lack of X-ray emission (that fades progressively away with the age of the pulsar), and by their modified morphology with respect to young systems. Nevertheless they have gained renewed attention in recent years, following the detection of misaligned X-ray tails protruding from an increasing number of nebulae created by fast moving pulsars, and of extended TeV halos surrounding aged systems. Both these features are clear signs of an efficient escape of particles, with energy close to the maximum acceleration limit of the pulsar. Here we discuss the properties of those evolved systems and what we have understood about the process of particle escape, and the formation of observed features. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. The number of satellites launched into Earth's orbit has almost tripled in the last three years (to over 4000) due to the increasing commercialisation of space. Multiple satellite constellations, consisting of over 400 000 individual satellites, have either been partially launched or are proposed for launch in the near future. Many of these satellites are highly reflective, resulting in a high optical brightness that affects ground-based astronomical observations. Despite this caveat, the potential effect of these satellites on gamma-ray-observing Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs) has largely been assumed to be negligible due to their nanosecond-scale integration times. However, this assumption has not been verified to date. Aims. As IACTs are sensitive to optical wavelength light, we aim to identify satellite trails in data taken by the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) IACT array. In particular, this study is aimed at quantifying the potential effects on data quality and extensive air shower event classification and reconstruction. Methods. Using night sky background measurements from H.E.S.S., we determined which observation times and pointing directions are affected most by these satellite trails. We then evaluated their impact on the standard Hillas parameter variables used for event analysis. Results. Due to the brightest trails, false trigger events can occur, however, for most modern analyses, the effect on astronomical results will be minimal. We observe a mild increase in the rate of trail detections over time (approximately doubling in three years), which is partially correlated with the number of satellite launches. Overall, the fraction of H.E.S.S. data affected (~0.2% of dark time observations) is currently minimal. We note that these trails could still have a non-negligible effect on future Cherenkov Telescope Array observations if advanced analysis techniques designed to lower the energy threshold of the instrument are applied. Aims. Since it launched on 22 March 2021, the 1U-sized CubeSat GRBAlpha operates and collects scientific data on high-energy transients, making it the smallest astrophysical space observatory to date. GRBAlpha is an in-orbit demonstration of a gamma-ray burst (GRB) detector concept suitably small to fit into a standard 1U volume. As was demonstrated in a companion paper, GRBAlpha adds significant value to the scientific community with accurate characterization of bright GRBs, including the recent outstanding event of GRB 221009A. Methods. The GRB detector is a 75 × 75 × 5 mm CsI(Tl) scintillator wrapped in a reflective foil (ESR) read out by an array of SiPM detectors, multi-pixel photon counters by Hamamatsu, driven by two separate redundant units. To further protect the scintillator block from sunlight and protect the SiPM detectors from particle radiation, we applied a multi-layer structure of Tedlar wrapping, anodized aluminium casing, and a lead-alloy shielding on one edge of the assembly. The setup allows observations of gamma radiation within the energy range of 70–890 keV with an energy resolution of ~30%. Results. Here, we summarize the system design of the GRBAlpha mission, including the electronics and software components of the detector, some aspects of the platform, and the current semi-autonomous operations. In addition, details are given about the raw data products and telemetry in order to encourage the community to expand the receiver network for our initiatives with GRBAlpha and related experiments. Neutrino emission from-ray bursts (GRBs) has been sought for a long time, and stringent limits on the most accredited GRB emission models have been obtained from IceCube. Multiwavelength GRB observations of the last decades have improved our knowledge of the GRB emission parameters, such as the Lorentz factor and the luminosity, which can vary from one GRB to another by several orders of magnitude. Empirical correlations among such parameters have been identified during the prompt phase, with direct implications on GRB models. In this work, we use the PSLab open-access code, developed for IceCube data analyses, to search for individual neutrino emission from the prompt and afterglow phases of selected GRBs, and for stacking emission from the ensemble of such GRBs. For the afterglow phase, we focus on GRBs with X-ray flares and plateaus in particular. While past stacking searches assumed the same GRB fluence at Earth, we present a stacking scheme based on physically motivated GRB weights. Moreover, we conceive a new methodology for the prompt phase that uses the empirical correlations to infer the GRB luminosity and Lorentz factor, when redshift measurements are not available. We do not observe any significant neutrino excess. Hence, we set constraints on the GRB neutrino fluxes and on relevant GRB parameters, including the magnetic field in the jet. Context. Young massive star clusters (YMCs) have increasingly become the focus of discussions on the origin of galactic cosmic rays (CRs). The proposition that CRs are accelerated inside superbubbles (SBs) blown by the strong winds of these clusters avoids issues faced by the standard paradigm of acceleration at supernova remnant shocks. Aims. We provide an interpretation of the latest TeV γ-ray observations of the region around the YMC Westerlund 1 taken with the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) in terms of diffusive shock acceleration at the cluster wind termination shock, taking the spectrum and morphology of the emission into account. As Westerlund 1 is a prototypical example of a YMC, this study is relevant to the general question about the role of YMCs for the Galactic CR population. Methods. We generated model γ-ray spectra, characterised particle propagation inside the SB based on the advection, diffusion, and cooling timescales, and constrained key parameters of the system. We considered hadronic emission from proton-proton interaction and subsequent pion decay and leptonic emission from inverse Compton scattering on all relevant photon fields, including the cosmic microwave background, diffuse and dust-scattered starlight, and the photon field of Westerlund 1 itself. The effect of the magnetic field on cooling and propagation is discussed. Klein-Nishina effects are found to be important in determining the spectral evolution of the electron population. Results. A leptonic origin of the bulk of the observed γ-rays is preferable. The model is energetically plausible, consistent with the presence of a strong shock, and allows for the observed energy-independent morphology. Context. Particle-accelerating colliding-wind binaries (PACWBs) are systems that are formed by two massive and hot stars and produce nonthermal radiation. The key elements of these systems are fast winds and the shocks that they create when they collide. Binaries with nonaccreting young pulsars have also been detected as nonthermal emitters, again as a consequence of the wind–wind interaction. Black holes might produce nonthermal radiation by this mechanism if they accrete at super-Eddington rates. In such cases, the disk is expected to launch a radiation-driven wind, and if this wind has an equatorial component, it can collide with the companion star yielding a PACWB. These systems are supercritical colliding wind binaries. Aims. We aim to characterize the particle acceleration and nonthermal radiation produced by the collision of winds in binary systems composed of a superaccreting black hole and an early-type star. Methods. We estimated the terminal velocity of the disk-driven wind by calculating the spatial distribution of the radiation fields and their effect on disk particles. We then found the location of the wind collision region and calculated the timescales of energy gain and losses of relativistic particles undergoing diffusive particle acceleration. With this information, we were able to compute the associated spectral energy distribution of the radiation. We calculated a number of specific models with different parameters to explore this scenario. Results. We find that the interaction of winds can produce nonthermal emission from radio up to tens of GeV, with luminosities in the range of ∼1033–1035 erg s−1, which for the most part are contributed by electron synchrotron and inverse Compton radiation. Conclusions. We conclude that supercritical colliding wind binaries, such as some ultraluminous X-ray sources and some Galactic X-ray binaries, are capable of accelerating cosmic rays and producing nonthermal electromagnetic emission from radio to γ-rays, in addition to the thermal components. Context. Certain types of supernova remnants (SNRs) in our Galaxy are assumed to be PeVatrons, capable of accelerating cosmic rays (CRs) to ~ PeV energies. However, conclusive observational evidence for this has not yet been found. The SNR G106.3+2.7, detected at 1–100 TeV energies by different γ-ray facilities, is one of the most promising PeVatron candidates. This SNR has a cometary shape, which can be divided into a head and a tail region with different physical conditions. However, in which region the 100 TeV emission is produced has not yet been identified because of the limited position accuracy and/or angular resolution of existing observational data. Additionally, it remains unclear as to whether the origin of the γ-ray emission is leptonic or hadronic. Aims. With the better angular resolution provided by new MAGIC data compared to earlier γ-ray datasets, we aim to reveal the acceleration site of PeV particles and the emission mechanism by resolving the SNR G106.3+2.7 with 0.1° resolution at TeV energies. Methods. We observed the SNR G106.3+2.7 using the MAGIC telescopes for 121.7 h in total – after quality cuts – between May 2017 and August 2019. The analysis energy threshold is ~0.2 TeV, and the angular resolution is 0.07−0.1°. We examined the γ-ray spectra of different parts of the emission, whilst benefitting from the unprecedented statistics and angular resolution at these energies provided by our new data. We also used measurements at other wavelengths such as radio, X-rays, GeV γ-rays, and 10 TeV γ-rays to model the emission mechanism precisely. Results. We detect extended γ-ray emission spatially coincident with the radio continuum emission at the head and tail of SNR G106.3+2.7. The fact that we detect a significant γ-ray emission with energies above 6.0 TeV from only the tail region suggests that the emissions above 10 TeV detected with air shower experiments (Milagro, HAWC, Tibet ASγ and LHAASO) are emitted only from the SNR tail. Under this assumption, the multi-wavelength spectrum of the head region can be explained with either hadronic or leptonic models, while the leptonic model for the tail region is in contradiction with the emission above 10 TeV and X-rays. In contrast, the hadronic model could reproduce the observed spectrum at the tail by assuming a proton spectrum with a cutoff energy of ~1 PeV for that region. Such high-energy emission in this middle-aged SNR (4−10 kyr) can be explained by considering a scenario where protons escaping from the SNR in the past interact with surrounding dense gases at present. Conclusions. The γ-ray emission region detected with the MAGIC telescopes in the SNR G106.3+2.7 is extended and spatially coincident with the radio continuum morphology. The multi-wavelength spectrum of the emission from the tail region suggests proton acceleration up to ~PeV, while the emission mechanism of the head region could either be hadronic or leptonic. Context. The Crab Nebula emits exceptionally bright non-thermal radiation across the entire wavelength range from the radio to the most energetic photons. So far, the underlying physical model of a relativistic wind from the pulsar terminating in a hydrodynamic standing shock has remained fairly unchanged since the early 1970s when it was first introduced. One of the predictions of this model is an increase in the toroidal magnetic field downstream from the shock where the flow velocity drops quickly with increasing distance until it reaches its asymptotic value, matching the expansion velocity of the nebula. Aims. The magnetic field strength in the nebula is poorly known. Using the recent measurements of the spatial extension and improved spectroscopy of the gamma-ray nebula, it has become –for the first time – feasible to determine in a robust way both the strength as well as the radial dependence of the magnetic field in the downstream flow. Methods. In this work, we introduce a detailed radiative model which was used to calculate the emission from non-thermal electrons (synchrotron and inverse Compton) as well as from thermal dust present in the Crab Nebula in a self-consistent way to compare it quantitatively with observational data. Special care was given to the radial dependence of the electron and seed field density. Results. The radiative model was used to estimate the parameters related to the electron populations responsible for radio and optical/X-ray synchrotron emission. In this context, the mass of cold and warm dust was determined. A combined fit based upon a χ2 minimisation successfully reproduced the complete data set used. For the best-fitting model, the energy density of the magnetic field dominates over the particle energy density up to a distance of ≈1.3 rs (rs: distance of the termination shock from the pulsar). The very high energy (VHE: E > 100 GeV) and ultra-high energy (UHE: E > 100 TeV) gamma-ray spectra set the strongest constraints on the radial dependence of the magnetic field, favouring a model where B(r) = (264 ± 9) μG(r/rs)−0.51 ± 0.03. For a collection of VHE measurements during epochs of higher hard X-ray emission, a significantly different solution B(r) = (167 ± 5) μG(r/rs)−0.29(+0.03, −0.06) is found. Conclusions. The high energy (HE: E > 100 MeV) and VHE gamma-ray observations of the Crab Nebula lift the degeneracy of the synchrotron emission between particle and magnetic field energy density. The reconstructed magnetic field and its radial dependence indicates a ratio of Poynting to kinetic energy flux σ ≈ 0.1 at the termination shock, which is ≈30 times larger than estimated up to now. Consequently, the confinement of the nebula would require additional mechanisms to slow the flow down through, for example, excitation of small-scale turbulence with possible dissipation of the magnetic field. Pulsar wind nebula (PWN) HESS J1825-137 is one of the largest and brightest gamma-ray sources in Milky Way. It was found that the morphology of the nebula strongly depends on energy and the photon spectrum varies obviously with distance from the pulsar in the >0.1 TeV energy band. In the frame of a spatially-dependent particle transport model, we investigate the TeV gamma-ray observed features of HESS J1825-137 by using the Markov chain Monte Carlo method. Our results are as follows: (i) the observed features can be reasonably explained by the competition between the transport (advection and diffusion) and energy cooling losses (adiabatic, synchrotron, and inverse Compton) of the high energy electrons, and that a parameter ξ ≡ τp/τC is introduced to describe this competition, which is the function of electron energy and position within the nebula, where τ p and τ C are total transport and energy cooling timescales, respectively; (ii) for the high energy electrons (E e > 0.1 TeV) within the nebula, the particle diffusion dominates over its advection, and the radiative cooling mostly dominates over adiabatic cooling; and (iii) the change of the radial extent with photon energy E γ can be expressed as |$R\propto E^{-\beta }_\gamma$|⁠ , where the index β is a function of E γ and the Klein−Nishina effect has a very important role for the variation of β with E γ. From the modelling results, the initial rotation period, braking index, and age of the pulsar are predicted to be 12.16 ms, 1.79, and 44 kyr, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cosmological models and their corresponding parameters are widely debated because of the current discrepancy between the results of the Hubble constant, H 0, obtained by SNe Ia, and the Planck data from the cosmic microwave background radiation. Thus, considering high redshift probes like gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) is a necessary step. However, using GRB correlations between their physical features to infer cosmological parameters is difficult because GRB luminosities span several orders of magnitude. In our work, we use a three-dimensional relation between the peak prompt luminosity, the rest-frame time at the end of the X-ray plateau, and its corresponding luminosity in X-rays: the so-called 3D Dainotti fundamental plane relation. We correct this relation by considering the selection and evolutionary effects with a reliable statistical method, obtaining a lower central value for the intrinsic scatter, σ int = 0.18 ± 0.07 (47.1 per cent) compared to previous results, when we adopt a particular set of GRBs with well-defined morphological features, called the platinum sample. We have used the GRB fundamental plane relation alone with both Gaussian and uniform priors on cosmological parameters and in combination with SNe Ia and BAO measurements to infer cosmological parameters like H 0, the matter density in the universe (ΩM), and the dark energy parameter w for a w CDM model. Our results are consistent with the parameters given by the Lambda cold dark matter model but with the advantage of using cosmological probes detected up to z  = 5, much larger than the one observed for the furthest SNe Ia. MAXI J1820+070 is a low-mass X-ray binary with a black hole (BH) as a compact object. This binary underwent an exceptionally bright X-ray outburst from 2018 March to October, showing evidence of a non-thermal particle population through its radio emission during this whole period. The combined results of 59.5 h of observations of the MAXI J1820+070 outburst with the H.E.S.S. MAGIC and VERITAS experiments at energies above 200 GeV are presented, together with Fermi -LAT data between 0.1 and 500 GeV, and multiwavelength observations from radio to X-rays. Gamma-ray emission is not detected from MAXI J1820+070, but the obtained upper limits and the multiwavelength data allow us to put meaningful constraints on the source properties under reasonable assumptions regarding the non-thermal particle population and the jet synchrotron spectrum. In particular, it is possible to show that, if a high-energy (HE) gamma-ray emitting region is present during the hard state of the source, its predicted flux should be at most a factor of 20 below the obtained Fermi -LAT upper limits, and closer to them for magnetic fields significantly below equipartition. During the state transitions, under the plausible assumption that electrons are accelerated up to ∼500 GeV, the multiwavelength data and the gamma-ray upper limits lead consistently to the conclusion that a potential HE and very-HE gamma-ray emitting region should be located at a distance from the BH ranging between 1011 and 1013 cm. Similar outbursts from low-mass X-ray binaries might be detectable in the near future with upcoming instruments such as CTA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aims. We aim to search for a hidden leptonic accelerator, such as a high-Ė pulsar, associated with the unidentified TeV object HESS J1702−420A. Methods. We carried out a 72 ks X-ray observation with the XMM-Newton satellite and analyzed the resulting data jointly with the publicly available HESS spectral energy distribution (SED) results to derive constraints on the leptonic contribution to the TeV emission of HESS J1702−420A. A set of scripts dedicated to the multi-wavelength modeling of X-ray and γ-ray data, based on Gammapy, Naima, and Xspec, has been developed in the context of this work and made publicly available along with this paper. Results. No object clearly associated with HESS J1702−420A was found in the XMM-Newton data. After excluding the unidentified object Suzaku src B as a possible X-ray counterpart and classifying it as a new cataclysmic variable source candidate, we derived strict upper limits on the level of diffuse X-ray emission in the HESS J1702−420A region: F(2 − 10 keV)≲5.4  × 10−5 keV  cm−2 s−1 at 2σ (≈95.5%) confidence level. A tight constraint on the magnetic field was derived, under a one-zone leptonic scenario, by jointly fitting the XMM-Newton spectra and the HESS SED: B ≲ 1.45 μG at 2σ level. We additionally report the serendipitous discovery of a new extended X-ray source with a hard spectral index of 1.99 ± 0.45, named XMMU J170147.3−421407 which is likely Galactic. Its classification as a high-speed runaway pulsar wind nebula (PWN), possibly associated with HESS J1702−420A, is not obvious but cannot be ruled out either. Conclusions. The hard γ-ray object HESS J1702−420A remains unidentified, but the absence of a clear X-ray counterpart strongly challenges simple leptonic scenarios. The only remaining possible leptonic counterpart for HESS J1702−420A appears to be a newly discovered X-ray source with extended morphology and hard spectral index, which may be a PWN powered by a high-speed runaway pulsar. The last measurement of the diffuse emission spectrum of the Milky Way in the megaelectronvolt (MeV) photon energy range was performed by CGRO/COMPTEL more than 20 yr ago. We report a new analysis with the spectrometer SPI aboard INTEGRAL in the band 0.5–8.0 MeV, finally superseding the signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) of the historic observations. This is possible thanks to an elaborate instrumental background model and careful considerations of the selected data, which are strongly affected by solar activity. We base our analysis on energy-dependent spatial template fitting in a region of Δl ×Δb = 95° ×95° around the Galactic centre. Our flux estimates are consistent with COMPTEL measurements and show no 'MeV bump' The spectrum follows a power-law shape with index −1.39 ± 0.09stat ± 0.10syst and an integrated flux of (5.7 ± 0.8stat ± 1.7syst) x 10−8 erg cm−2 s−1 between 0.5 and 8.0 MeV. We find that cosmic-ray electrons and propagation models consistent with the latest Fermi/LAT, Voyager 1, and AMS-02 data are broadly in agreement with the inferred inverse Compton spectral shape. However, a mismatch of a factor of 2–3 in normalisation with respect to baseline expectations may point to enhanced target photon densities and/or electron source spectra in the inner Galaxy, slightly modified diffusion properties, or the presence of an unresolved population of MeV γ-ray sources. BL Lacs are one subclass of blazars with highly energetic γ -ray emission, which is strongly boosted by a relativistic beaming effect. The latest catalogue of the 10 years of Fermi/LAT data (Abdollahi et al. 2020) and the γ -ray Doppler factors in Pei et al. (2020) provide us with a large BL Lac sample to study their jet emission morphologies and intrinsic properties. In this paper, we collected a sample of 294 Fermi BL Lacs and probed the correlations between the γ -ray emissions and luminosity distances. Our analyses give following conclusions: (1) the observed γ -ray emissions are really boosted by the γ -ray Doppler factor, and the intrinsic γ -ray emissions are closely correlated with luminosity distances. (2) the morphology of jet emissions for HBLs may be continuous, while that for IBLs may be the case of a moving sphere in the γ -ray bands. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this work, we re-analyze the Fermi-LAT observation of NGC 1275 to search for axion-like particle (ALP) effects and constrain ALP parameters. Instead of fitting the observed spectrum with ALP models, we adopt an alternative method for the analysis of this source which calculates the irregularity of the spectrum. With the newly used method, we find no spectral oscillation for the NGC 1275 and rule out couplings gaγ>3×10−12GeV−1 around ALP mass of ma∼1 neV at 95% confidence level, which is more stringent than the previous results. We also show that the constraints can be further improved by combining the observation of PKS 2155-304. We suggest that with more sources taken into account, we could obtain a much wider exclusion region.

γ -ray is a unique probe for extreme events in the universe. Detecting the γ -ray provides an important opportunity to understand the composition of universe, the evolution of stars, the origin of cosmic rays, etc. γ -ray astronomy involves in various frontier scientific issues, and the observed energy spectrum spans over a wide range from a few hundreds of keV to a few hundreds of TeV. Different γ -ray telescopes are in need for different scientific goals and spectral bands. In this work, 5 kinds of space- and ground-based γ -ray observing techniques were summarized, including the Coded-aperture telescopes, Compton telescopes, Pair-production telescopes, Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes, and Extensive Air Shower Arrays. The progress in γ -ray astronomy in the past 70 years, motivated by the observation capability, was reviewed. Great achievements have been made in the high-energy domain and very-high-energy domain, while because of the limited missions conducted, as well as a lower sensitivity comparing with other domains, discoveries in low- and medium-energy are few, and due to the high observation difficulty, as well as the late start, relevant scientific yields in ultra- and extremely-high energy are limited. Moreover, the future planned missions and capabilities of the γ -ray telescopes and their possible scientific outputs were discussed. Among these missions, low- and medium-energy space telescopes e-ASTROGAM (enhanced-ASTROGAM), AMEGO (All-sky Medium Energy Gamma-ray Observatory), and very-high-energy ground-based arrays LHAASO (Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory) and CTA (Cherenkov Telescope Array) greatly improve sensitivity than their corresponding last generation, thus expect very likely to further expand our knowledge on the γ -universe. We present a machine learning (ML) based method for automated detection of Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) candidate events in the range 60–250 keV from the AstroSat Cadmium Zinc Telluride Imager data. We use density-based spatial clustering to detect excess power and carry out an unsupervised hierarchical clustering across all such events to identify the different light curves present in the data. This representation helps us to understand the instrument's sensitivity to the various GRB populations and identify the major non-astrophysical noise artefacts present in the data. We use Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) to carry out template matching, which ensures the morphological similarity of the detected events with known typical GRB light curves. DTW alleviates the need for a dense template repository often required in matched filtering like searches. The use of a similarity metric facilitates outlier detection suitable for capturing previously unmodelled events. We briefly discuss the characteristics of 35 long GRB candidates detected using the pipeline and show that with minor modifications such as adaptive binning, the method is also sensitive to short GRB events. Augmenting the existing data analysis pipeline with such ML capabilities alleviates the need for extensive manual inspection, enabling quicker response to alerts received from other observatories such as the gravitational-wave detectors. We present the nucleosynthesis of magneto-rotational supernovae (MR-SNe) including neutrino-driven and magneto-rotational-driven ejecta based, for the first time, on 2D simulations with accurate neutrino transport. The models analysed here have different rotation and magnetic fields, allowing us to explore the impact of these two key ingredients. The accurate neutrino transport of the simulations is critical to analyse the slightly neutron-rich and proton-rich ejecta that are similar to the, also neutrino-driven, ejecta in standard supernovae. In the model with strong magnetic field, the r-process produces heavy elements up to the third r-process peak (A ∼ 195), in agreement with previous works. This model presents a jet-like explosion with proton-rich jets surrounded by neutron-rich material where the r-process occurs. We have estimated a lower limit for 56Ni of |$2.5\times 10^{-2} \, \mathrm{M}_\odot$|⁠ , which is still well below the expected hypernova value. Longer simulations including the accretion disc evolution are required to get a final prediction. In addition, we have found that the late evolution is critical in a model with weak magnetic field in which late-ejected neutron-rich matter produces elements up to the second r-process peak. Even if we cannot yet provide conclusions for hypernova nucleosynthesis, our results agree with observations of old stars and radioactive isotopes in supernova remnants. This makes MR-SNe a good additional scenario to neutron star mergers for the synthesis of heavy elements and brings us closer to understand their origin and the role of MR-SNe in the early Galaxy nucleosynthesis. The scientific potential of a wide field‐of‐view, and very‐high duty cycle, ground‐based gamma‐ray detector has been demonstrated by the current generation of instruments, such as HAWC and ARGO, and will be further extended in the Northern Hemisphere by LHAASO. Nevertheless, no such instrument exists in the Southern Hemisphere yet, where a great potential lies uncovered for the mapping of Galactic large‐scale emission as well as providing access to the full sky for transient and variable multi‐wavelength and multi‐messenger phenomena. Access to the Galactic Centre and complementarity with the CTA‐South are other key motivations for such a gamma‐ray observatory in the South. There is also significant potential for cosmic ray studies, including investigation of cosmic‐ray anisotropy. In this contribution, I will present the motivations and the concept of the future Southern Wide‐Field Gamma‐ray Observatory (SWGO), now formally established as an international Collaboration and currently in the R&D phase. The coincidental detection of the gravitational wave event GW 170817 and the gamma-ray burst GRB 170817A marked the advent of multi-messenger astronomy and represented a milestone in the study of GRBs. Significant progress in this field is expected in the coming years with the increased sensitivity of gravitational waves detectors and the launch of new facilities for the high-energy survey of the sky. In this context, the launch of SVOM in mid-2022, with its two wide-field high-energy instruments ECLAIRs and GRM, will foster the possibilities of coincidental transient detection with gravitational waves and gamma-rays events. The purpose of this paper is to assess the ability of SVOM/ECLAIRs to detect and quickly characterize high-energy transients in the local Universe (z ≤ 0.3), and to discuss the contribution of this instrument to multi-messenger astronomy and to gamma-ray burst (GRB) astrophysics in the 2020’s. A list of local HE transients, along with their main characteristics, is constructed through an extensive literature survey. This list includes 41 transients: 24 long GRBs, 10 short GRBs and 7 SGR Giant Flares. The detectability of these transients with ECLAIRs is assessed with detailed simulations using tools developed for the SVOM mission, including a GEANT4 simulation of the energy response and a simulated trigger algorithm representative of the onboard trigger algorithm. SVOM/ECLAIRs would have been able to detect 88% of the short high-energy transients in our list: 22 out of 24 long GRBs, 8 out of 10 short GRBs and 6 out of 7 SGR Giant Flares. The SNR for almost all detections will be sufficiently high to allow the on-board ECLAIRs trigger algorithm to derive the localisation of the transient, transmitting it to the SVOM satellite and ground-based instruments. Coupled with the anti-solar pointing strategy of SVOM, this will enable an optimal follow-up of the events, allowing the observation of their afterglows, supernovae/kilonovae counterparts, and host galaxies. We conclude the paper with a discussion of the unique contribution expected from SVOM and of the possibility of simultaneous GW detection for each type of transient in our sample. Context. The High Energy Stereoscopic System Galactic plane survey (HGPS) is to date the most comprehensive census of Galactic γ-ray sources at very high energies (VHE; 100 GeV ≤ E ≤ 100 TeV). As a consequence of the limited sensitivity of this survey, the 78 detected γ-ray sources comprise only a small and biased subsample of the overall population. The larger part consists of currently unresolved sources, which contribute to large-scale diffuse emission to a still uncertain amount. Aims. We study the VHE γ-ray source population in the Milky Way. For this purpose population-synthesis models are derived based on the distributions of source positions, extents, and luminosities. Methods. Several azimuth-symmetric and spiral-arm models are compared for spatial source distribution. The luminosity and radius function of the population are derived from the source properties of the HGPS data set and are corrected for the sensitivity bias of the HGPS. Based on these models, VHE source populations are simulated and the subsets of sources detectable according to the HGPS are compared with HGPS sources. Results. The power-law indices of luminosity and radius functions are determined to range between −1.6 and −1.9 for luminosity and −1.1 and −1.6 for radius. A two-arm spiral structure with central bar is discarded as spatial distribution of VHE sources, while azimuth-symmetric distributions and a distribution following a four-arm spiral structure without bar describe the HGPS data reasonably well. The total number of Galactic VHE sources is predicted to be in the range from 800 to 7000 with a total luminosity and flux of (1.6 − 6.3) × 1036 ph s−1 and (3 − 15) × 10−10 ph cm−2 s−1, respectively. Conclusions. Depending on the model, the HGPS sample accounts for (68 − 87)% of the emission of the population in the scanned region. This suggests that unresolved sources represent a critical component of the diffuse emission measurable in the HGPS. With the foreseen jump in sensitivity of the Cherenkov Telescope Array, the number of detectable sources is predicted to increase by a factor between 5 and 9. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aims. In the presence of a sufficient amount of target material, γ-rays can be used as a tracer in the search for sources of Galactic cosmic rays (CRs). Here we present deep observations of the Galactic center (GC) region with the MAGIC telescopes and use them to infer the underlying CR distribution and to study the alleged PeV proton accelerator at the center of our Galaxy. Methods. We used data from ≈100 h observations of the GC region conducted with the MAGIC telescopes over five years (from 2012 to 2017). Those were collected at high zenith angles (58−70 deg), leading to a larger energy threshold, but also an increased effective collection area compared to low zenith observations. Using recently developed software tools, we derived the instrument response and background models required for extracting the diffuse emission in the region. We used existing measurements of the gas distribution in the GC region to derive the underlying distribution of CRs. We present a discussion of the associated biases and limitations of such an approach. Results. We obtain a significant detection for all four model components used to fit our data (Sgr A*, "Arc", G0.9+0.1, and an extended component for the Galactic Ridge). We observe no significant difference between the γ-ray spectra of the immediate GC surroundings, which we model as a point source (Sgr A*) and the Galactic Ridge. The latter can be described as a power-law with index 2 and an exponential cut-off at around 20 TeV with the significance of the cut-off being only 2σ. The derived cosmic-ray profile hints to a peak at the GC position and with a measured profile index of 1.2 ± 0.3 is consistent with the 1/r radial distance scaling law, which supports the hypothesis of a CR accelerator at the GC. PSR B1259-63 is a gamma-ray binary system hosting a radio pulsar orbiting around an O9.5Ve star, LS 2883, with a period of ∼3.4 yr. The interaction of the pulsar wind with the LS 2883 outflow leads to unpulsed broad-band emission in the radio, X-rays, GeV, and TeV domains. While the radio, X-ray, and TeV light curves show rather similar behaviour, the GeV light curve appears very different with a huge outburst about a month after a periastron. The energy release during this outburst seems to significantly exceed the spin-down luminosity of the pulsar and both the GeV light curve and the energy release vary from one orbit to the next. In this paper, we present for the first time the results of optical observations of the system in 2017, and also reanalyse the available X-ray and GeV data. We present a new model in which the GeV data are explained as a combination of the bremsstrahlung and inverse Compton emission from the unshocked and weakly shocked electrons of the pulsar wind. The X-ray and TeV emission is produced by synchrotron and inverse Compton emission of energetic electrons accelerated on a strong shock arising due to stellar/pulsar winds collision. The brightness of the GeV flare is explained in our model as a beaming effect of the energy released in a cone oriented, during the time of the flare, in the direction of the observer. Aims. We measure the Crab Nebula -ray spectral energy distribution in the ~100 TeV energy domain and test the validity of existing leptonic emission models at these high energies. Methods. We used the novel very large zenith angle observations with the MAGIC telescope system to increase the collection area above 10 TeV. We also developed an auxiliary procedure of monitoring atmospheric transmission in order to assure proper calibration of the accumulated data. This employs recording optical images of the stellar field next to the source position, which provides a better than 10% accuracy for the transmission measurements. Results. We demonstrate that MAGIC very large zenith angle observations yield a collection area larger than a square kilometer. In only ~56 h of observations, we detect the -ray emission from the Crab Nebula up to 100 TeV, thus providing the highest energy measurement of this source to date with Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes. Comparing accumulated and archival MAGIC and Fermi/LAT data with some of the existing emission models, we find that none of them provides an accurate description of the 1 GeV to 100 TeV -ray signal. A very bright and fast varying gamma-ray flare has been detected from the blazar 3C 279 on June 16, 2015. We have studied the broadband spectral energy distribution of the source during the flaring episode and in the low activity state using a simple one zone leptonic model. We find that an electron energy distribution described by a broken power law can be used to reproduce the broadband emissions during the high and low activity states. The flux measurements at radio, infrared and optical frequencies are reproduced by the synchrotron emission resulting from the relativistic electrons in a jet magnetic field strength of 0.37 G. The gamma-ray emission from the blazar 3C 279 is attributed to the Comptonization of the IR seed photons from the dusty torus with a temperature of 870 K. The outburst from the source observed on June 16, 2015 can be ascribed to an efficient acceleration process associated with a sudden enhancement in the electron energy density in the emitting region with respect to the low activity state. The fast gamma-ray variability at a minute timescale implies that the emission during the flare originates from a more compact region and the size of the emission zone in the low activity state is found to be four times larger than that during the flare. We have also used the model parameters derived from the broadband spectral energy distribution modelling to investigate a few physical properties of the jet during the outburst. Slightly more than 30 years ago, Whipple detection of the Crab Nebula was the start of Very High Energy gamma-ray astronomy. Since then, gamma-ray observations of this source have continued to provide new surprises and challenges to theories, with the detection of fast variability, pulsed emission up to unexpectedly high energy, and the very recent detection of photons with energy exceeding 1 PeV. In this article, we review the impact of gamma-ray observations on our understanding of this extraordinary accelerator.

Recent observations have confirmed that Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) afterglows produce Very High-Energy radiation (VHE, E>100GeV). This highly anticipated discovery opens new scenarios in the interpretation of GRBs and in their role as probes of Extragalactic Background Light (EBL) and Lorentz Invariance Violation (LIV). However, some fundamental questions about the actual nature of VHE emission in GRBs and its evolution during the burst are still unsolved. These questions will be difficult to address, even with future imaging Cherenkov telescopes, such as the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA). Here we investigate the prospects of gamma-ray sky monitoring with Extensive Air Showers arrays (EAS) to address these problems. We discuss the theoretical aspects connected with VHE radiation emission and the implications that its temporal evolution properties have on the interpretation of GRBs. By revisiting the high-energy properties of some Fermi-LAT detected GRBs, we estimate the typical fluxes expected in the VHE band and compare them with a range of foreseeable instrument performances, based on the Southern Wide Field-of-view Gamma-ray Observatory concept (SWGO). We focus our analysis on how different instrument capabilities affect the chances to explore the burst onset and early evolution in VHE, providing invaluable complementary information with respect to Cherenkov telescope observations. We show that under the assumption of conditions already observed in historical events, the next-generation ground monitoring detectors can actually contribute to answer several key questions.

PSR B1259-63 is a gamma-ray binary system hosting a radio pulsar orbiting around a O9.5Ve star, LS 2883, with a period of ∼3.4 years. The interaction of the pulsar wind with the LS 2883 outflow leads to unpulsed broadband emission in the radio, X-ray, GeV, and TeV domains. One of the most unusual features of the system is an outburst of GeV energies around the periastron, during which the energy release substantially exceeds the spin down luminosity under the assumption of the isotropic emission. In this paper, we present the first results of a recent multi-wavelength campaign (radio, optical, and X-ray bands) accompanied by the analysis of publicly available GeV Fermi/LAT data. The campaign covered a period of more than 100 days around the 2021 periastron and revealed substantial differences from previously observed passages. We report a major delay of the GeV flare, weaker X-ray flux during the peaks, which are typically attributed to the times when the pulsar crosses the disk, and the appearance of a third X-ray peak never observed before. We argue that these features are consistent with the emission cone model proposed by us previously, in the case of a sparser and clumpier disk of the Be star.

The origin of the pulsed gamma-ray emission in pulsars remains an open issue. The combination of sensitive observations in the GeV domain by AGILE and Fermi-LAT and increasingly sophisticated numerical simulations have recently brought new insights into our understanding of the pulsed emission and particle acceleration processes in pulsars. Particle-in-cell simulations of pulsar magnetospheres show that the equatorial current sheet forming beyond the light cylinder is the main culprit in magnetic dissipation, particle acceleration and bright high-energy synchrotron radiation all together. The shinning current sheet naturally results in a pulse of light each time the sheet crosses our line of sight, which happens twice in most cases. Synthetic light curves present robust features reminiscent of observed gamma-ray pulsars by the Fermi-LAT and AGILE, opening up new perspectives for direct comparison between simulations and observations. Context. Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are millisecond-long bursts uniquely detected at radio frequencies. FRB 131104 is the only case for which a γ-ray transient positionally and temporally consistent was claimed. This high-energy transient had a duration of ∼400 s and a 15–150 keV fluence Sγ ∼ 4 × 10−6 erg cm−2. However, the association with the FRB is still debated. Aims. We aim at testing the systematic presence of an associated transient high-energy counterpart throughout a sample of the FRB population. Methods. We used an approach like that used in machine learning methodologies to accurately model the highly-variable Fermi/GBM instrumental background on a time interval comparable to the duration of the proposed γ-ray counterpart of FRB 131104. A possible γ-ray signal is then constrained considering sample average lightcurves. Results. We constrain the fluence of the possible γ-ray signal in the 8–1000 keV band down to 6.4 × 10−7 (7.1 × 10−8) erg cm−2 for a 200-s (1-s) integration time. Furthermore, we found the radio-to-gamma fluence ratio to be η >  108 Jy ms erg−1 cm2. Conclusions. Our fluence limits exclude ∼94% of Fermi/GBM detected long gamma-ray bursts and ∼96% of Fermi/GBM detected short gamma-ray bursts. In addition, our limits on the radio-to-gamma fluence ratio point to a different emission mechanism from that of magnetar giant flares. Finally, we exclude a γ-ray counterpart as fluent as the one possibly associated with FRB 131104 to be a common feature of FRBs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report on XMM-Newton observations of the supernova remnant (SNR) 3C434.1 (G94.0+1.0), the first in X-rays since the ROSAT era. Our analysis confirms the thermal origin of the observed extended X-ray emission, whose morphology appears more complex than previously reported. In particular, part of the shell shows a significantly harder spectrum which is consistent with a power law, and it is, therefore, likely of non-thermal origin. Motivated by these finding, we revisited the GeV observations of the field taken with the Fermi observatory. A significant excess associated with the remnant was detected, which is likely associated with non-thermal X-ray emission from part of the shell. The analysis of the Fermi data resulted in the serendipity discovery of GeV emission from the nearby SNR G093.7-00.2. Finally, we searched for a possible compact remnants within the shell, however, no obvious candidates could be identified due to the fairly large positional uncertainties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. The recent detection of pulsed γ-ray emission from the Vela pulsar in the ∼10 to 100 GeV range by H.E.S.S. promises important potential to probe into the very high energy (VHE) radiation mechanisms of pulsars. Aims. A combined analysis of H.E.S.S. and Fermi-LAT data suggests that the leading wing of the P2 peak shows a new, hard gamma-ray component (with photon index as hard as Γ ∼ 3.5), setting in above 50 GeV and extending beyond 100 GeV. We study these findings in the context of rotationally driven (centrifugal) particle acceleration. Methods. We analyze achievable particle energies in the magnetosphere of the Vela pulsar and calculate the resultant emission properties. Results. Inverse Compton up-scattering of thermal photons from the surface of the star is shown to lead a pulsed VHE contribution reaching into the TeV regime with spectral characteristics compatible with current findings. If confirmed by further observations this could be the second case where rotationally driven processes turn out to be important to understand the VHE emission in young pulsars. Context. The annihilation of cosmic positrons with electrons in the interstellar medium results in the strongest persistent γ-ray line signal in the sky. For the past 50 yr, this 511 keV emission – predominantly from the galactic bulge region and from a low surface-brightness disk – has puzzled observers and theoreticians. A key issue for understanding positron astrophysics is found in cosmic-ray propagation, especially at low kinetic energies (≲10 MeV). Aims. We want to shed light on how positrons propagate and the resulting morphology of the annihilation emission. We approach this "positron puzzle" by inferring kinematic information of the 511 keV line in the inner radian of the Galaxy. This constrains propagation scenarios and positron source populations in the Milky Way. Methods. By dissecting the positron annihilation emission as measured with INTEGRAL/SPI, we derived spectra for individual and independent regions in the sky. The centroid energies of these spectra around the 511 keV line are converted into Doppler shifts, representing the line-of-sight velocity along different galactic longitudes. This results in a longitude-velocity diagram of positron annihilation. From high-resolution spectra, we also determined Doppler-broadening from γ-ray line shape parameters to study annihilation conditions as they vary with galactic longitude. Results. We found line-of-sight velocities in the 511 keV line that are consistent with zero, as well as with galactic rotation from CO measurements (2–3 km s−1 deg−1), and measurements of radioactive 26Al (7.5–9.5 km s−1 deg−1). The velocity gradient in the inner ±30° is determined to be 4 ± 6 km s−1 deg−1. The width of the 511 keV line is constant as a function of longitude at 2.43 ± 0.14 keV, with possibly different values towards the disk. The positronium fraction is found to be 1.0 along the galactic plane. Conclusions. The weak signals in the disk leave the question open of whether positron annihilation is associated with the high velocities seen in 26Al or rather with ordinarily rotating components of the Milky Way's interstellar medium. We confirm previous results that positrons are slowed down to the 10 eV energy scale before annihilation and constrain bulk Doppler-broadening contributions to ≲1.25 keV in the inner radian. Aims. We present the second AGILE–GRID catalogue (2AGL) of γ-ray sources in the energy range 100 MeV–10 GeV. Methods. With respect to previous AGILE–GRID catalogues, the current 2AGL catalogue is based on the first 2.3 years of science data from the AGILE mission (the so-called pointing mode) and incorporates more data and several analysis improvements, including better calibrations at the event reconstruction level, an updated model for the Galactic diffuse γ-ray emission, a refined procedure for point-like source detection, and the inclusion of a search for extended γ-ray sources. Results. The 2AGL catalogue includes 175 high-confidence sources (above 4σ significance) with their location regions and spectral properties and a variability analysis with four-day light curves for the most significant. Relying on the error region of each source position, including systematic uncertainties, 122 sources are considered as positionally associated with known counterparts at different wavelengths or detected by other γ-ray instruments. Among the identified or associated sources, 62 are active galactic nuclei (AGNs) of the blazar class. Pulsars represent the largest Galactic source class, with 41 associated pulsars, 7 of which have detected pulsation; 8 supernova remnants and 4 high-mass X-ray binaries have also been identified. A substantial number of 2AGL sources are unidentified: for 53 sources no known counterpart is found at different wavelengths. Among these sources, we discuss a subclass of 29 AGILE–GRID–only γ-ray sources that are not present in 1FGL, 2FGL, or 3FGL catalogues; the remaining sources are unidentified in both 2AGL and 3FGL catalogues. We have analyzed ten years of the Fermi Large Area Telescope data toward the SS433/W50 region. With the latest source catalog and diffuse background models, the γ-ray excess from SS433/W50 is detected with a significance of ~6σ in the photon energy range of 500 MeV–10 GeV. Our analysis indicates that an extended flat disk morphology is preferred over a point-source description, suggesting that the GeV emission region is much larger than that of the TeV emission detected by the High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) telescope. The size of the GeV emission is instead consistent with the extent of the radio nebula W50, a supernova remnant being distorted by the jets, so we suggest that the GeV emission may originate from this supernova remnant. The spectral result of the GeV emission is also consistent with a supernova remnant origin. Furthermore, we derive the GeV flux upper limits on the TeV emission region, which put moderate constraints on the leptonic models to explain the multiwavelength data. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Young core-collapse supernovae with dense-wind progenitors may be able to accelerate cosmic-ray hadrons beyond the knee of the cosmic-ray spectrum, and this may result in measurable gamma-ray emission. We searched for gamma-ray emission from ten supernovae observed with the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) within a year of the supernova event. Nine supernovae were observed serendipitously in the H.E.S.S. data collected between December 2003 and December 2014, with exposure times ranging from 1.4 to 53 h. In addition we observed SN 2016adj as a target of opportunity in February 2016 for 13 h. No significant gamma-ray emission has been detected for any of the objects, and upper limits on the >1 TeV gamma-ray flux of the order of ~10−13 cm−2s−1 are established, corresponding to upper limits on the luminosities in the range ~2 × 1039 to ~1 × 1042 erg s−1. These values are used to place model-dependent constraints on the mass-loss rates of the progenitor stars, implying upper limits between ~2 × 10−5 and ~2 × 10−3M⊙ yr−1 under reasonable assumptions on the particle acceleration parameters. Context. The coded-mask spectrometer-telescope SPI on board the INTErnational Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Laboratory (INTEGRAL) records photons in the energy range between 20 and 8000 keV. A robust and versatile method for modelling the dominating instrumental background radiation is difficult to establish for such a telescope in the rapidly changing space environment. Aims. In a previous paper we presented our spectral parameter database, developed from long-term monitoring of the SPI germanium detectors, that characterises the instrument response and background behaviour. Our aim is to build a self-consistent and broadly applicable background model for typical science cases of INTEGRAL/SPI based on this database. Methods. The general analysis method for SPI relies on distinguishing between illumination patterns on the 19-element germanium detector array from background and sky in a maximum-likelihood framework. We illustrate how the complete set of measurements, even including the exposures of the sources of interest, can be used to define a background model. The observation strategy of INTEGRAL makes it possible to determine individual background components, originating from continuum and γ-ray line emission. We apply our method to different science cases, including point-like, diffuse, continuum, and line emission, and evaluate the adequacy in each case. Results. From likelihood values and the number of fitted parameters, we determine how strong the impact of the unknown background variability is. We find that the number of fitted parameters, i.e. how often the background has to be re-normalised, depends on the emission type (diffuse with many observations over a large sky region, or point-like with concentrated exposure around one source), the spectral energy range, and bandwidth. A unique timescale, valid for all analysis issues, is not applicable for INTEGRAL/SPI, but must and can be inferred from the chosen data set. Conclusions. We conclude that our background modelling method can be used in a wide variety of INTEGRAL/SPI science cases, and provides nearly systematics-free and robust results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aims. HESS J1844-030 is a newly confirmed TeV source in the direction of the X-ray pulsar wind nebula (PWN) candidate G29.4+0.1 and the complex radio source G29.37+0.1, which is likely formed by the superposition of a background radio galaxy and a Galactic supernova remnant (SNR). Many scenarios have been proposed to explain the origin of HESS J1844-030, based on several sources that are capable of producing very high energy radiation. We investigate the possible connection between the SNR, the PWN G29.4+0.1, and HESS J1844-030 to shed light on the astrophysical origin of the TeV emission. Methods. We performed an imaging and spectral study of the X-ray emission from the PWN G29.4+0.1 using archival observations obtained with the Chandra and XMM-Newton telescopes. Public radio continuum and HI data were used to derive distance constraints for the SNR that is linked to G29.37+0.1 and to investigate the interstellar medium where it is expanding. We applied a simple model of the evolution of a PWN inside an SNR to analyze the association between G29.4+0.1 and the radio emission from G29.37+0.1. We compared the spectral properties of the system with the population of TeV PWNe to investigate if HESS J1844-030 is the very high energy counterpart of the X-ray PWN G29.4+0.1. Results. Based on the morphology and spectral behavior in the X-ray band, we conclude that G29.4+0.1 is a PWN and that a point source embedded on it is the powering pulsar. The HI data revealed that the SNR linked to G29.37+0.1 is a Galactic source at 6.5 kpc and expanding in a nonuniform medium. From the analysis of the pulsar motion and the pressure balance at the boundary of X-ray emission, we conclude that G29.4+0.1 could be a PWN that is located inside its host remnant, forming a new composite SNR. Based on the magnetic field of the PWN obtained from the X-ray luminosity, we found that the population of electrons producing synchrotron radiation in the keV band can also produce IC photons in the TeV band. The HAWC Collaboration released the 2HWC catalogue of TeV sources, in which 19 show no association with any known high-energy (HE; E  ≳ 10 GeV) or very-high-energy (VHE; E  ≳ 300 GeV) sources. This catalogue motivated follow-up studies by both the Major Atmospheric Gamma-ray Imaging Cherenkov (MAGIC) and Fermi -LAT (Large Area Telescope) observatories with the aim of investigating gamma-ray emission over a broad energy band. In this paper, we report the results from the first joint work between High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC), MAGIC, and Fermi -LAT on three unassociated HAWC sources: 2HWC J2006+341, 2HWC J1907+084*, and 2HWC J1852+013*. Although no significant detection was found in the HE and VHE regimes, this investigation shows that a minimum 1° extension (at 95 per cent confidence level) and harder spectrum in the GeV than the one extrapolated from HAWC results are required in the case of 2HWC J1852+013*, whilst a simply minimum extension of 0.16° (at 95 per cent confidence level) can already explain the scenario proposed by HAWC for the remaining sources.
