Abstract: River rehabilitation initiatives have become commonplace in European water courses as a result of European Union Water Framework Directive requirements. However, the short‐term responses of fishes to such work have thus far been varied, with some river rehabilitation efforts resulting in demonstrable improvements in diversity and size structure, whereas others have resulted in little or no change. Electrofishing and channel character surveys were conducted annually between 2009 and 2014 on a reach of the River Glaven (North Norfolk, UK) before and after rehabilitation work (embankment removal in 2009 and re‐meandering in 2010) as well as on a control reach immediately upstream. To assess the effects of rehabilitation work, before‐after‐control‐impact analysis tested for changes in channel character (geomorphology, substratum composition, and mesohabitat structure) and in fish species richness, relative abundance, population density, and size structure (calculated after fish data entry into the UK Environment Agency's National Fisheries Population Database). Following re‐meandering work (i.e., treatment), habitat heterogeneity and depth variation increased in the treatment reach, but fish responses were not significant except for biomass and density increases of brown trout Salmo trutta and abundance decreases of European eel Anguilla anguilla, in the treatment but not the control reach. These results are consistent with comparable river rehabilitation initiatives elsewhere, and they suggest that larger‐scale rehabilitations are probably needed to produce greater increases in fish density and diversity. It is recommended that future rehabilitation initiatives address catchment‐scale factors that can enhance ecosystem recovery, for example, removal of barriers to colonization, and increases in connectivity and water quality issues linked to eutrophication, elevated fine sediment inputs, and various pollutants. Developed for carrying out risk assessments under the European Commission (EC) Council Regulation No 708/2007 concerning the use of alien and locally absent species in aquaculture (ASR), the European Non‐native Species in Aquaculture Risk Assessment Scheme (ENSARS) is briefly summarised, and the ‘Organism’ module is applied to the 24 species listed in ASR's Annex IV. Four other ENSARS modules (Infectious Agent, Facility, Pathway, and Socio‐economic) were used to assess two case study species (European catfish Silurus glanis L. and red swamp crayfish Procambarus clarkii Girard). No Annex IV species was categorised as low risk, 10 as moderately low risk, 12 as medium risk, two as moderately high risk and none as high risk. The results are discussed and recommendations are made on further development of the scheme as well as the need to have multiple assessors of multidisciplinary expertise from the Member States concerned carry out the assessments using an approach similar to that carried out by EU Reference Laboratory proficiency tests. Summary The identification of fish species from head bone remains is employed in various sciences, including archaeology, paleontology and field ecology, with the estimation of fish size from biometric relationships being useful in the assessment of predation pressure exerted by increasing numbers of piscivorous species (e.g. Eurasian otter Lutra lutra and great cormorant Phalacrocorax carbo). This is particularly relevant for crucian carp, Carassius carassius, which is in decline in Europe due to changes in land use and to increasing numbers of non-native Carassius species (i.e. goldfish C. auratus, gibel carp C. gibelio), which hybridize with C. carassius. However, diagnostic keys and biometric relationships are lacking for C. carassius and its most common hybrids, crosses with C. auratus. The present paper addresses this gap in knowledge, providing diagnostic keys and biometric relationships for the head bones of all Carassius species found in Europe as well as for C. carassius × C. auratus hybrids. All bone size to body length relationships were statistically significant. Similarly, all bone size to body weight relationships were significant for C. carassius, C. auratus, and C. gibelio, but none were significant for C. carassius × C. auratus hybrids. Diagnostic structures were found to distinguish easily between the Carassius species and hybrids, which will assist in determining the identity and sizes of prey found in faecal and archaeological remains. Scale samples from crucian carp, Carassius carassius (L.), collected over a 10-year period from a population in an ornamental pond were used to examine patterns in growth as a function of environmental factors, including water temperatures. Back-calculated standard lengths (SL) at age differed between year classes in most cases. Annual SL increments were related to temperature and age using a non-linear growth model. Growth declined with increasing age, whereas annual SL increments increased with increasing water temperature. The best-fit model was with the total number of summer days when air temperature exceeded 20 °C (using water temperature equivalents of air temperature). A growth model including water temperature, age, year class, relative condition and rainfall was a better fit than other models. Year-class strength was positively correlated with water degree-days, and year-class strength negatively affected annual SL increments. The results indicate that within a strong year class of crucian carp, the growth of individual fish is reduced compared with weak year classes, suggesting that density negatively affects growth in ponds where resources are limited. The ornamental Asiatic species, goldfish Carassius auratus, was introduced to open waters of the UK in the late 17th century. The species reproduces readily in small ponds and threatens native species, in particular crucian carp Carassius carassius, but surprisingly there are no known published studies on the growth and reproduction of feral pond populations of this species in the UK and relatively few elsewhere. The aim of the present study was to assess the growth (back-calculated length at age), body condition and reproduction (fecundity, egg size, length and age at maturity) of goldfish living in small ponds of Epping Forest (northeast London, England), either alone (allopatry) or with (sympatry) native crucian carp, in order to provide the necessary background information to inform the risk assessment of this non-native fish species. Growth increments in the allopatric goldfish populations were similar, with progressively declining growth increments with increasing age. This contrasts with goldfish living in sympatry with crucian carp Carassius carassius, where growth increments remained high for ages 1–2, 2–3 and 3–4. Body condition values varied little, but goldfish living in allopatry had significantly greater condition than those living in sympatry with crucian carp. Sexual maturity was achieved by at least some age 1+ fish in all populations, with young mean ages (1.0–1.7 years) and short mean standard lengths (50.0–63.4 mm SL) at maturity in females relative to an introduced population in Italy (2.1 years and 139.2 mm SL, respectively). 1. Temperate regions with fish communities dominated by cold-water species (physiological optima <20 °C) are vulnerable to the effects of warming temperatures caused by climate change, including displacement by non-native cool-water (physiological optima 20–28 °C) and warm-water fishes (physiological optima >28 °C) that are able to establish and invade as the thermal constraints on the expression of their life history traits diminish. 2. England and Wales is a temperate region into which at least 38 freshwater fishes have been introduced, although 14 of these are no longer present. Of the remaining 24 species, some have persisted but failed to establish, some have established populations without becoming invasive and some have become invasive. The aim of the study was to predict the responses of these 24 non-native fishes to the warming temperatures of England and Wales predicted under climate change in 2050. 3. The predictive use of climate-matching models and an air and water temperature regression model suggested that there are six non-native fishes currently persistent but not established in England and Wales whose establishment and subsequent invasion would benefit substantially from the predicted warming temperatures. These included the common carp Cyprinus carpio and European catfish Silurus glanis, fishes that also exert a relatively high propagule pressure through stocking to support angling and whose spatial distribution is currently increasing significantly, including in open systems. 4. The potential ecological impacts of the combined effects of warming temperatures, current spatial distribution and propagule pressure on the establishment and invasion of C.  carpio and S.  glanis were assessed. The ecological consequences of C.  carpio invasion were assessed as potentially severe in England and Wales, with impacts likely to relate to habitat destruction, macrophyte loss and increased water turbidity. However, evidence of ecological impacts of S.  glanis elsewhere in their introduced range was less clear and so their potential impacts in England and Wales remain uncertain. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The efficacy and sub-lethal consequences of single and double tagging European catfish Silurus glanis with Petersen disc and passive integrated transponder ( PIT) tags were examined in short (laboratory) and longer-term (field) experiments. Tag retention in the laboratory was 100%, with normal behaviour (i.e. feeding) in all fish returning within 36 h. In the field, 65 of 120 tagged S. glanis were recaptured from five small study ponds, with 85% retaining their PIT tags, though recapture rates and tagging efficacy were highly variable amongst locations. This is consistent with literature for other fishes, suggesting that tagging efficiency is variable across species and largely context dependent (fish length, tagging location, habitat). The extent and causes of crucian carp Carassius carassius decline were assessed during an initial study of c. 25 ponds in north Norfolk, eastern England, U.K., which was then replicated (a validation study) on another c. 25 ponds in an adjacent area. Of these ponds, c. 40 are known to have contained C. carassius during the 1970s-1980s. In the initial and validation studies, C. carassius were found in only 11 of these ponds, yielding declines of 76% (five of 21 ponds) and 68% (six of 19 ponds), respectively (72% decline overall). Non-native cyprinids, including goldfish Carassius auratus and common carp Cyprinus carpio and their hybrids with C. carassius, were observed in 20% of the ponds. Causes of C. carassius local extinction from 21 ponds were confidently determined as desiccation due to drought, terrestrialization and habitat deterioration, hybridization and competition with non-native cyprinids, agricultural land reclamation and predation (after the introduction of pike Esox lucius). This study led to C. carassius being designated as a Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) species in the county of Norfolk, the first formal conservation designation for the species in the U.K. The C. carassius BAP plan aims to halt the decline of this much overlooked species through reintroductions and selective stocking of suitable ponds within the native range of the species.
