Much attention has been paid to Cook's record in dealing with scurvy on his three Pacific voyages; less to the experiences of his French and Spanish contemporaries. This article will examine the voyages of Bougainville, Surville, La Perouse and Malaspina to illustrate the extent to which Cook's methods were known and applied. To serve as a comparison, the health record on the earlier British voyages of Byron, Wallis and Carteret will be considered, as well as the voyage of the First Fleet to Botany Bay and that of Vancouver to the North Pacific.
