This article addresses family reunification in France (réunification familiale) as an essential right of refugees and a clear legal entitlement under domestic law. It proceeds with a reality-check on access to the designated visa for families and support professionals and discusses potential grounds for future advocacy on the matter. Available data, reports and complementary feedback gained from several practitioners in the field suggest hurdles stand in both law and practice, at odds with international standards and guidance. Strengthening information, physical and financial access to the procedure and ensuring due diligence, flexibility and transparency when examining applications arguably remain on the agenda for reform. Further adjustments to both administrative and judicial options for appeal and legal aid rules could also upgrade guarantees for families, with greater chances for an effective remedy in a timeframe compatible with the stakes. Filling standing gaps in data, research and evaluation would seem equally essential for an evidence-based debate, and in calling for a proactive reunification policy that acts on its potential as a pathway towards international protection. Ultimately, while a reminder of the multiple dimensions to investigate if one is concerned with effective access to reunification beyond its legal consecration as a right, the ‘French case’ certainly illustrates the need for advocates in this field to keep widening strategies and tools, besides litigation.

For modeling recognition decisions in a typical eyewitness identification lineup task with multiple simultaneously presented test stimuli (also known as simultaneous detection and identification), essentially two different models based on signal detection theory are currently under consideration. These two models mainly differ with respect to their assumptions regarding the interplay between the memory signals of different stimuli presented in the same lineup. The independent observations model (IOM), on the one hand, assumes that the memory signal of each simultaneously presented test stimulus is separately assessed by the decision-maker, whereas the ensemble model (EM), on the other hand, assumes that each of these memory signals is first compared with and then assessed relative to its respective context (i.e., the memory signals of the other stimuli within the same lineup). Here, we discuss some reasons why comparing confidence ratings between trials with and without a dud (i.e., a lure with no systematic resemblance to the target) in an otherwise fair lineup—results of which have been interpreted as evidence in favor of the EM—is in fact inconclusive for differentiating between the EM and the IOM. However, the lack of diagnostic value hinges on the fact that in these experiments two aspects of between-item similarity (viz. old–new and within-lineup similarity) are perfectly confounded. Indeed, if separately manipulating old–new similarity, we demonstrate that EM and IOM make distinct predictions. Following this, we show that previously published data are inconsistent with the predictions made by the EM.

Purpose The purpose of this study was to determine the most optimal central venous catheter (CVC) for pediatric patients with Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) in terms of complications. Methods A retrospective study including patients diagnosed with HL from 2015 to 2021 at the Princess Máxima Center was performed. Patients were followed from CVC insertion until removal or 06–2021, whichever came first. The primary outcome was the CVC-related complication incidence rate (IR) per 1000 CVC-days. Furthermore, the incidence rate ratio (IRR) was calculated by comparing complication IRs between peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC) and totally implantable venous access ports (TIVAP). Additionally, risk factors for central venous thrombosis (CVT) were identified. Results A total of 98 patients were included. The most frequently observed complications were local irritation/infections (18%; IR 0.93), malfunctions (15%; IR 0.88), and CVC-related CVTs (10%; IR 0.52). Single lumen PICCs were associated with a higher risk of complications (49% vs. 26%; IRR 5.12, CI95% 2.76–9.50), severe complications (19% vs. 7%; IRR 11.96, CI95% 2.68–53.42), and early removal (18% vs. 7%; IRR 9.96, CI95% 2.18–45.47). A single lumen PICC was identified as a risk factor for CVC-related CVT when compared to TIVAPs (12% vs. 7%, IRR 6.98, CI95% 1.45–33.57). Conclusion The insertion of a TIVAP rather than a PICC should be recommended for pediatric patients with HL, especially in the presence of CVT-related risk factors. Future trials should evaluate the efficacy and safety of direct oral anticoagulants for the primary prevention of CVT in pediatric patients with a PICC and other CVT-related risk factors.

The Aqua, SNPP (Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership), and JPSS (Joint Polar Satellite System) satellites carry a combination of hyperspectral infrared sounders (AIRS, Atmospheric Infrared Sounder, and CrIS, Cross-track Infrared Sounder) and high-spatial-resolution narrowband imagers (MODIS, Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer, and VIIRS, Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite). They provide an opportunity to acquire high-quality, long-term cloud data records and are a key component of the existing Program of Record of cloud observations. By matching observations from sounders and imagers across different platforms at the pixel scale, this study evaluates the self-consistency and continuity of cloud retrievals from Aqua and SNPP by multiple algorithms, including the AIRS version 7 retrieval algorithm and the Community Long-term Infrared Microwave Combined Atmospheric Product System (CLIMCAPS) version 2 for sounders and the standard Aqua MODIS collection 6.1 and the NASA MODIS–VIIRS continuity cloud products for imagers. Metrics describing detailed statistical distributions at the sounder field of view (FOV) and the joint histograms of cloud properties are evaluated. These products are found to be highly consistent despite their retrieval from different sensors using different algorithms. Differences between the two sounder cloud products are mainly due to cloud clearing and the treatment of clouds in scenes with unsuccessful atmospheric profile retrievals. The sounder subpixel cloud heterogeneity evaluated using the standard deviation of imager retrievals at the sounder FOV shows good agreement between the standard and continuity products from different satellites. However, the impact of algorithm and instrument differences between MODIS and VIIRS is revealed in cloud top pressure retrievals and in the imager cloud distribution skewness. Our study presents a unique aspect to examine NASA's progress toward building a continuous cloud data record with sufficient quality to investigate clouds' role in global environmental change.

Scientific research has long been recognized as one of the four pillars of the zoo or aquarium mission, alongside recreation, conservation, and education. This study sought to quantify a sample of zoos’ participation in scientific research via the provision of biomaterials from animals to outside scientists and the associated training of undergraduate and graduate students that resulted from these projects. A convenience sample of zoos provided data on their participation in biomaterials-related projects and a focused analysis of biomaterials-related research facilitated by the Saint Louis Zoo was conducted. In addition, the Association of Zoos & Aquariums’ conservation & science database was queried to uncover what research projects AZA members engaged in over the last five years that likely involved biomaterials research and training of students. Results demonstrate that zoos are making significant contributions to science by agreeing to participate in large numbers of biomaterials-related projects across different areas of focus involving a variety of animal species annually, with results applicable to human and non-human animals. Support of such research often involves student thesis projects, thus contributing to the education of future scientists.

From May through July 2020, Arizona was a global hotspot for new COVID-19 cases. In response to the surge of cases, local public health departments looked for innovative ways to form external partnerships to address their staffing needs. In collaboration with the Maricopa County Department of Public Health, the Arizona State University Student Outbreak Response Team (SORT) created and implemented a virtual call center to conduct public health case investigations for COVID-19. SORT officially launched a dedicated COVID-19 case investigation program after 3 weeks of program design and training. From June 29 through November 8, 2020, SORT recruited and trained 218 case investigators, completed 5000 case patient interviews, and closed 10 000 cases. Our team also developed process improvements to address disparities in case investigation timeliness. A strong infrastructure designed to accommodate remote case investigations, paired with a large workforce, enabled SORT to provide additional surge capacity for the county’s high volume of cases. University-driven multidisciplinary case investigator teams working in partnership with state, tribal, and local public health staff members can be an effective tool for supporting a diverse and growing public health workforce. We discuss the essential design factors involved in building a university program to complement local COVID-19 response efforts, including workflows for case management, volunteer case investigator recruitment and training, secure technology platforms for conducting case investigations remotely, and robust data-tracking procedures for maintaining quality control and timely case reporting.

While much effort has been placed on comprehensive quantitative proteome analysis, certain applications demand the measurement of only a few target proteins from complex systems. Traditional approaches to targeted proteomics rely on nanoliquid chromatography (nLC) and targeted mass spectrometry (MS) methods, e.g., parallel reaction monitoring (PRM). However, the time requirement for nLC can limit the throughput of targeted proteomics. To achieve rapid and high-throughput targeted methods, here we show that nLC separations can be eliminated and replaced with direct infusion shotgun proteome analysis (DISPA) using high-field asymmetric waveform ion mobility spectrometry (FAIMS) with PRM. We demonstrate the application of DISPA-PRM for rapid targeted quantification of bacterial enzymes utilized in the production of biofuels by monitoring temporal expression in 72 metabolically engineered bacterial cultures in less than 2.5 h, with a measured dynamic range1200-fold. We conclude that DISPA-PRM presents a valuable innovative tool with results comparable to nLC-MS/MS, enabling fast and rapid detection of targeted proteins in complex mixtures.

While cervical lymphadenopathy is common in children, a decision model for detecting high-grade lymphoma is lacking. Previously reported individual lymphoma-predicting factors and multivariate models were not sufficiently discriminative for clinical application. To develop a diagnostic scoring tool, we collected data from all children with cervical lymphadenopathy referred to our national pediatric oncology center within 30 months (n = 182). Thirty-nine putative lymphoma-predictive factors were investigated. The outcome groups were classical Hodgkin lymphoma (cHL), nodular lymphocyte-predominant Hodgkin lymphoma (NLPHL), non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL), other malignancies, and a benign group. We integrated the best univariate predicting factors into a multivariate, machine learning model. Logistic regression allocated each variable a weighing factor. The model was tested in a different patient cohort (n = 60). We report a 12-factor diagnostic model with a sensitivity of 95% (95% CI 89–98%) and a specificity of 88% (95% CI 77–94%) for detecting cHL and NHL. Our 12-factor diagnostic scoring model is highly sensitive and specific in detecting high-grade lymphomas in children with cervical lymphadenopathy. It may enable fast referral to a pediatric oncologist in patients with high-grade lymphoma and may reduce the number of referrals and unnecessary invasive procedures in children with benign lymphadenopathy.

Classical Hodgkin lymphoma (cHL) is characterised by malignant Hodgkin Reed-Sternberg cells located in an inflammatory microenvironment. Blood biomarkers result from active cross-talk between malignant and non-malignant cells. One promising biomarker in adult patients with cHL is thymus and activation-regulated chemokine (TARC). We investigated TARC as marker for interim and end-of-treatment response in paediatric cHL. In this multicentre prospective study, TARC levels were measured among 99 paediatric patients with cHL before each cycle of chemotherapy and were linked with interim and end-of-treatment remission status. TARC levels were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. At diagnosis, TARC levels were elevated in 96% of patients. Plasma TARC levels declined significantly after one cycle of chemotherapy (p < 0.01 vs. baseline) but did not differ at interim assessment by positron emission tomography (p = 0.31). In contrast, median plasma TARC at end of treatment was significantly higher in three patients with progressive disease compared to those in complete remission (1.226 vs. 90 pg/ml; p < 0.001). We demonstrate that, in paediatric patients, plasma TARC is a valuable response marker at end-of-treatment, but not at interim analysis after the first two chemotherapy cycles. Further research is necessary to investigate TARC as marker for long-term progression free survival.

Occult hepatitis B infection (OBI) is characterized by the presence of low levels of hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA and undetectable HBsAg in the blood. The prevalence of OBI in blood donors in Asia ranges from 0.013% (China) to 10.9% (Laos), with no data available from Vietnam so far. We aimed to investigate the prevalence of OBI among Vietnamese blood donors. A total of 623 (114 women and 509 men) HBsAg-negative blood donors were screened for anti-HBc and anti-HBs by ELISA assays. In addition, DNA from sera was isolated and nested PCR was performed for the HBV surface gene (S); a fragment of the S gene was then sequenced in positive samples. The results revealed that 39% (n = 242) of blood donors were positive for anti-HBc, and 70% (n = 434) were positive for anti-HBs, with 36% (n = 223) being positive for both anti-HBc and anti-HBs. In addition, 3% of blood donors (n = 19) were positive for anti-HBc only, and 34% (n = 211) had only anti-HBs as serological marker. A total of 27% (n = 170) were seronegative for any marker. Two of the blood donors (0.3%) were OBI-positive and sequencing revealed that HBV sequences belonged to HBV genotype B, which is the predominant genotype in Vietnam.

Proteomic analysis on the scale that captures population and biological heterogeneity over hundreds to thousands of samples requires rapid mass spectrometry methods which maximize instrument utilization (IU) and proteome coverage while maintaining precise and reproducible quantification. To achieve this, a short liquid chromatography gradient paired to rapid mass spectrometry data acquisition can be used to reproducibly profile a moderate set of analytes. High throughput profiling at a limited depth is becoming an increasingly utilized strategy for tackling large sample sets but the time spent on loading the sample, flushing the column(s), and re-equilibrating the system reduces the ratio of meaningful data acquired to total operation time and IU. The dual-trap single-column configuration presented here maximizes IU in rapid analysis (15 min per sample) of blood and cell lysates by parallelizing trap column cleaning and sample loading and desalting with analysis of the previous sample. We achieved 90% IU in low micro-flow (9.5 µL/min) analysis of blood while reproducibly quantifying 300-400 proteins and over 6,000 precursor ions. The same IU was achieved for cell lysates, in which over 4,000 proteins (3,000 at CV below 20%) and 40,000 precursor ions were quantified at a rate of 15 minutes/sample. Thus, deployment of this dual-trap single column configuration enables high throughput epidemiological blood-based biomarker cohort studies and cell-based perturbation screening.

Understanding why sharks bite humans is essential for developing strategies to prevent these incidents. Here, we use bite wound characteristics and eye witness descriptions of shark behavior to determine the likely motivation for several bites perpetrated by an oceanic whitetip (OWT) shark Carcharhinus longimanus on an adult female snorkeler off Moorea island (French Polynesia) in October 2019. The victim was snorkeling with others in pelagic waters as part of an organized whale-watching tour when the shark-without any warning behavior-bit her at least three times resulting in severe injuries with substantial loss of soft tissue from the chest and both forearms. The victim survived these injuries thanks to rapid and effective first aid provided by her companions. The sudden, unprovoked and repeated bites with substantial tissue removal are consistent with predatory behavior although the dominance hypothesis cannot be fully ruled out. This would be the first case of a predatory shark bite ever documented in French Polynesia in over 70 years of data collection. Given the routine association of OWT sharks with cetaceans, in-water whale watching activities should adopt appropriate risk management strategies in regions hosting this species of shark.

Graft-versus-host disease (GvHD) is a major complication following stem-cell or solid-organ transplantation. Accurate diagnosis of cutaneous GvHD is challenging, given that drug eruptions and viral rashes may present with similar clinical/histological manifestations. Specific markers are not available. We performed the histological examination of biopsy samples from acute GvHD (aGvHD; n = 54), Stevens-Johnson syndrome/toxic epidermal necrolysis (SJS/TEN; n = 27), maculopapular drug eruption (MDE; n = 26) and healthy controls (n = 26). Samples of aGvHD showed a decrease in Langerhans cells (LC, p = 0.0001) and an increase in macrophages (MΦ, p = 0.0001) compared to healthy skin. Compared to SJS/TEN, MDE and healthy skin, aGvHD biopsies contained greater numbers of CD4+ and CD8+ T cells. The majority of CD4+ T-helper cells were localized in the upper dermis, whereas cytotoxic CD8+ T cells were found in the epidermis. Increased numbers of CD56+ natural killer (NK) cells in the upper dermis of aGvHD skin (p = 0.007) were not observed in controls or SJS/TEN and MDE. There were no differences in elafin staining between aGvHD and the latter two conditions. Acute GvHD appears to have a distinct inflammatory cell profile (T cells/NK cells) that may aid establishing in a more accurate diagnosis, especially when used to rule out differential diagnoses such as SJS/TEN or MDE.

Plasma cell neoplasms (PCN) and mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) can both harbor t(11;14)(q13;q32) (CCND1/IGH), usually resulting in cyclin D1 overexpression. In some cases, particularly at low levels of disease, it can be morphologically challenging to distinguish between these entities in the bone marrow (BM) since PCN with t(11;14) are often CD20-positive with lymphoplasmacytic cytology, while MCL can rarely have plasmacytic differentiation. We compared the difference in CCND1/IGH by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) in PCN and MCL to evaluate for possible differentiating characteristics. We identified 326 cases of MCL with t(11;14) and 279 cases of PCN with t(11;14) from either formalin-fixed, paraffin embedded tissue or fresh BM specimens. The "typical", balanced CCND1/IGH FISH signal pattern was defined as 3 total CCND1 signals, 3 total IGH signals, and 2 total fusion signals. Any deviation from the "typical" pattern was defined as an "atypical" pattern, which was further stratified into "gain of fusion" vs. "complex" patterns. Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs) – animal feeding operations with over 1,000 animal units in confined spaces – have proliferated over the past 30 years in the United States. CAFOs provide operational cost savings, but higher animal concentrations in confined spaces can generate external costs, e.g., non-point source water pollution. In this study, we improve on previous research designs to estimate the relationship between the growth in CAFOs and surface water quality using longitudinal data on a large spatial scale. We use a panel dataset from 1995-2017 that links CAFO intensity with nearby surface water quality readings in Wisconsin to perform our analysis. Leveraging variation in CAFO intensity within hydrological regions over time, we find that increasing CAFO intensity increases the levels of nutrients, specifically total phosphorus and ammonia, in surface water; adding one CAFO to a Hydrologic Unit Code-8 (HUC8) region leads to a 1.7% increase in total phosphorus levels and a 2.7% increase in ammonia levels, relative to sample mean levels. As an important contribution of our work, we use these results to calculate the external costs of surface water quality damages from CAFOs in Wisconsin. Our results imply that the marginal CAFO in Wisconsin produces non-market surface water quality damages of at least $203,541 per year.

Immunohistochemical markers are associated with treatment outcome in adults with classical Hodgkin Lymphoma (cHL). Studies in children are scarce and inconsistent. We investigated in 67 children with cHL, whether the expression of CD15, CD30, PAX5, PD-1, PD-L1, CD68, CD163 and TARC at diagnosis is associated with disease free survival (DFS) and with interim remission status. Low CD15 and low TARC expression were associated with relapsed disease. Low expression of PD-L1 was associated with complete remission at interim PET-scan. Our data suggest a difference between pediatric and adult cHL. This underlines the importance of future research into specific prognostic factors in pediatric cHL, indispensable for improvement of treatment in this population.

Motivation Cells respond to environments by regulating gene expression to exploit resources optimally. Recent advances in technologies allow for measuring the abundances of RNA, proteins, lipids and metabolites. These highly complex datasets reflect the states of the different layers in a biological system. Multi-omics is the integration of these disparate methods and data to gain a clearer picture of the biological state. Multi-omic studies of the proteome and metabolome are becoming more common as mass spectrometry technology continues to be democratized. However, knowledge extraction through the integration of these data remains challenging. Results Connections between molecules in different omic layers were discovered through a combination of machine learning and model interpretation. Discovered connections reflected protein control (ProC) over metabolites. Proteins discovered to control citrate were mapped onto known genetic and metabolic networks, revealing that these protein regulators are novel. Further, clustering the magnitudes of ProC over all metabolites enabled the prediction of five gene functions, each of which was validated experimentally. Two uncharacterized genes, YJR120W and YDL157C, were accurately predicted to modulate mitochondrial translation. Functions for three incompletely characterized genes were also predicted and validated, including SDH9, ISC1 and FMP52. A website enables results exploration and also MIMaL analysis of user-supplied multi-omic data. O uso de rações artesanais é uma das alternativas que vem sendo discutidas para a viabilização da piscicultura familiar na Amazônia. A adoção desta estratégia, no entanto, requer o emprego de critérios para o balanceamento das rações. O objetivo deste estudo foi investigar o desempenho produtivo de tambacus (Colossoma macropomum x Piaractus mesopotamicus) quando alimentados com rações artesanais à base de macaxeira e farelo de soja, bem como avaliar a necessidade de suplementá-las em aminoácidos, energia e macro minerais. Para tanto, 813 juvenis (48,49±4,21 g) foram estocados em 15 tanques de concreto com fundo de terra (48,50±3,61 m2 x 0,8 m) e alimentados com cinco diferentes rações, sendo quatro delas artesanais e isoprotéicas (25% PB), a saber: C1 (macaxeira + farelo de soja + premix; como controle), R1 (C1 + fosfato bicálcico), R2 (C1 + fosfato bicálcico + óleo de soja), R3 (C1 + fosfato bicálcico + óleo de soja + DL-metionina) e C2 (ração comercial extrusada 32%PB; utilizada como parâmetro de comparação regional). Myeloid/lymphoid neoplasms with FGFR1 rearrangement (MLN-FGFR1) comprise a heterogeneous group of neoplasms that can present as a myeloproliferative neoplasm, a myelodysplastic/myeloproliferative neoplasm, acute myeloid leukemia, T or B lymphoblastic leukemia/lymphoma, or mixed phenotype acute leukemia. The overall outcome of these neoplasms is poor, and these patients often show cytogenetic evolution with gain of additional chromosomal abnormalities leading to transformation to acute leukemia. Pure erythroid leukemia and erythroblastic sarcoma evolving from a preexisting chronic myeloid neoplasm have rarely been described; however, this has not been reported in MLN-FGFR1. Herein we describe a biopsy-proven chronic myeloid neoplasm with FGFR1 rearrangement with transformation to erythroblastic sarcoma presenting as a pleural effusion.
