Purpose: This study utilized the control-value theory of achievement emotions to investigate relationships between retroactive physical education (PE) beliefs and emotions with adulthood physical activity (PA) attitudes and behaviors. Method: An exploratory structural equation model was employed to evaluate participants' (N = 381) PE emotions, antecedents, and outcomes. Results: Control, intrinsic value, and extrinsic value antecedents predicted several emotions. PE enjoyment facilitated positive PA attitudes, whereas boredom and shame predicted negative PA attitudes. Shame predicted lower physical self-concept in students. Moderate to vigorous PA was traced positively with enjoyment and negatively from relief. Several indirect relationships were also observed that further support the control-value theory of achievement emotions. Conclusions: Emotions are a response to learning and finding value in PE, which clearly impacts PA-related beliefs and behaviors into adulthood. Considerations on the externally driven nature of PE outcomes (i.e., standards/performance) are needed given the juxtaposition for also targeting suggested goals like intrinsic value and enjoyment.

The purpose of this article is to provide recommendations as to how teacher content knowledge can be improved to enhance the efficacy of RT programs for secondary PE students. We offer four recommendations including 1) Embed RT for adolescents content knowledge within physical education teacher education (PETE) programs, 2) Professional development opportunities for in-service teachers, 3) Offer certifications within PETE program course work and professional development opportunities, and 4) Work towards standardization of content knowledge regarding adolescents and RT to provide a starting point for PETE programs and professional developments.

Many adolescents lack the requisite physical preparation for sport participation and PA. Multi-sport participation and resistance training during youth (age 5-11) and adolescence (age 12-17) years can positively affect physical activity levels, health outcomes, and promote long-term athletic development (LTAD). The National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) created a position statement regarding LTAD. K-12 schools provide an ideal environment to deliver LTAD programs. Limited literature exists regarding how best to implement LTAD within K-12 physical education. The purpose of this paper is to provide physical educators with strategies to implement LTAD within K-12 programming. In this paper, we have described how specific curriculum models are aligned with LTAD and can support developmentally appropriate progression of PE content across instructional levels. Implementation of LTAD programs within PE utilize standards based curriculum design to create multi-curricular offerings that include resistance training.

The purpose of this article is to provide practical applications for eccentric focused RT through the lens of DI that K-12 PE teachers can incorporate within their curriculums. Within the DI framework, differentiated assessments are key to measure readiness and the product of learning. The Brockport Fitness Tests are presented as a strategy to employ differentiated assessments. Eccentric focused RT protocols and exercises are outlined to accommodate varying ability levels. Additionally, an example weekly plan and workout template are presented as useful examples for teachers to utilize to promote effective and motivating strategies.

Technological knowledge, technological content knowledge), and technological pedagogical knowledge is swiftly becoming a popular topic in the field of physical education teacher education (PETE). The Initial PETE Standards set forth by SHAPE America indicate that preservice physical education teachers (PPETs) should be taught how to use and teach with technology in their K-12 gymnasiums. However, research has indicated that PPETs are not being adequately prepared to teach with technology. This is a major concern seeing as the K-12 student population is becoming more technologically advanced. Additionally, the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the need for quality and equitable learning and instruction to occur through online platforms. The purpose of this study was to examine the number of credit hours dedicated to technology across the undergraduate curriculum of PPETs. To help frame the study, we used the 2018 Carnegie Classifications as a guide to see whether there were differences in technology credit hour allocation across varying colleges and universities in the United States. In addition to using the Carnegie Classifications, we broke up technology credit hours into three categories. For example, technology credit hours were offered during either the general education, the professional education, and/or the PETE major phase. Results from a paired-samples t test, an analysis of variance, and a multivariate analysis of variance indicated that PPETs take more technology credit hours during the professional education phase of their undergraduate curriculum than during the PETE major phase. Additionally, PPETs enrolled in doctoral institutions take more technology credit hours in the PETE major phase than PPETs enrolled in baccalaureate institutions. The incorporation of technology into PETE coursework, field experiences, and student teaching practicums will better prepare PPETs to deliver quality physical education through online interfaces.

Curricula grounded in social justice are vital in higher education, including kinesiology programs. The United States has seen continued increases in diversity, with education consistently displaying poor representation of historically marginalized groups. The purpose of this paper is to offer three elements that kinesiology programs should consider when aiming to successfully engage in developing social-justice curricula: context, climate, and "red tape." We define and describe each element and how it influences our approach to curriculum development and provide specific examples from our work in the University of New Mexico Physical Education Teacher Education program to illustrate practical implementation. We argue that social-justice curriculum development is required to prepare young professionals to enter the field with the knowledge, skills, and dispositions to meet the needs of diverse communities. Introduction: The widespread use of diagnostic and therapeutic ionizing radiation raises concerns regarding excessive occupational and patient exposure. In this study, we test a novel fluoroscopic technique that has the potential to minimize radiation dose during urologic procedures. Materials and Methods: A prospective evaluation of all patients undergoing endoscopic urologic procedures in our institution was conducted. A "two-point technique (TPT)" is described in which the fluoroscope image intensifier (c-arm) is shifted between caudal and cephalad set points of the operative field. We wished to determine whether patient radiation exposure was lower with TPT than with a non-structured conventional technique, referred to as the cognitive fluoroscopic technique (CFT), in which the manipulation of the c-arm was at the discretion of the user. We obtained all clinical, radiographic, and fluoroscopic data of patients in the study period and used unpaired nonparametric statistical analysis of univariates entered stepwise into a logistic regression model. Results: A total of 106 endoscopic urologic procedures from January 2016 to November 2018 were reviewed. Forty-four (41.5%) cases were performed using TPT and 62 (58.5%) using CFT. The mean fluoroscopy time of TPT vs CFT was 71.1 (±60.8) seconds vs 104.5 (±91.6) seconds, respectively (p = 0.04), and the mean radiation dose on TPT vs CFT was 11.6 (±10.6) mGy vs 20.3 (±24.3) mGy, respectively (p = 0.03). TPT was an independent predictor of reduced operative room (OR) time and fluoro time (p < 0.05), while body mass index, age, and operator were not. Conclusion: The "TPT" helps reducing radiation dose and fluoroscopic time during endoscopic urologic procedures. The TPT is useful to lower radiation exposure to patients and OR staff. Introduction and Objectives: Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) is a complex multistep surgery that has shown a steady increase in use for the past decade in the United States. We sought to evaluate the trends and factors associated with PCNL usage across New York State (NYS). Our goal was to characterize patient demographics and socioeconomic factors across high-, medium-, and low-volume institutions. Materials and Methods: We searched the NYS, Statewide Planning and Research Cooperative System (SPARCS) database from 2006 to 2014 using ICD-9 Procedure Codes 55.04 (percutaneous nephrostomy with fragmentation) for all hospital discharges. Patient demographics including age, gender, race, insurance status, and length of hospital stay were obtained. We characterized each hospital as a low-, medium-, or high-volume center by year. Patient and hospital demographics were compared and reported using chi-square analysis and Student's t-test for categorical and continuous variables, respectively, with statistical significance as a p-value of <0.05. Results: We identified a total of 4576 procedures performed from 2006 to 2014 at a total of 77 hospitals in NYS (Table 1). Total PCNL volume performed across all NYS hospitals increased in the past decade, with the greatest number of procedures performed in 2012 to 2013. Low-volume institutions were more likely to provide care to minority populations (21.4% vs 17.3%, p < 0.001) and those with Medicaid (25.5% vs 21.5%, p < 0.001). High-volume institutions provided care to patients with private insurance (42.1% vs 34.0%, p < 0.001) and had a shorter length of stay (3.3 days vs 4.1 days, p < 0.001). Conclusion: Our data provide insight into the patient demographics of those treated at high-, medium-, and low-volume hospitals for PCNL across NYS. Significant differences in race, insurance status, and length of stay were noted between low- and high-volume institutions, indicating that racial and socioeconomic factors play a role in access to care at high-volume centers. Introduction and Objectives: Multiple surgical therapies for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) have been developed to decrease complications and increase provider efficiency. We investigated contemporary BPH treatment device-related adverse events by searching a publicly available database. Materials and Methods: The Manufacturer and User Facility Device Experience (MAUDE) database was queried for contemporary BPH treatments. All devices were evaluated for malfunction, patient complications, and manufacturer review. The MAUDE adverse event classification system was used to standardize complications. Univariate analysis was performed to identify associations between BPH devices and adverse events. Results: A total of 2567 reports were identified: transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) 197 (7.67%), holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP) 39 (1.52%), GreenLight™ 2315 (90.2%), and UroLift® 16 (0.62%). The most common deviations for each modality included cutting loop detachment during TURP 116 (58.9%), morcellator dysfunction for HoLEP 23 (58.9%), tip fracture/detachment for GreenLight (68.8%), and failure to deploy during UroLift 10 (62.5%). Only 18 (0.7%) patients required medical/surgical management (MAUDE II–IV) due to a device complication. No significant relationship was seen between each modality and complications; however, morcellator use (27.8%) was observed in higher grade complications. Manufacturer review occurred in 61.7% of cases, with 41.3% of reviewed cases finding the operator the cause of the malfunction. Conclusion: Each BPH modality investigated had minimal patient harm with over 99% of patients experiencing no complication after device malfunction. Of note, great care should be taken with morcellator use during HoLEP as it had the greatest number of MAUDE II to IV complications among all devices. Manufacturer review revealed that over 40% of cases were due to misuse by the user. Therefore, urologists should select the modalities they are most familiar with to decrease patient harm and prevent device malfunctions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article explores the efforts of one network of afterschool programs to leverage new media technologies to promote out-of-school learning among high school students from nondominant backgrounds and connect this learning to their school contexts. The study entailed in-depth interviews and focus groups with 40 youth and adults involved in the afterschool programming, as well as 12 observations of afterschool sessions and school-based classes. A thematic analysis of the transcripts and field notes revealed a notable discrepancy in youth's learning experiences in school and afterschool settings. Out-of-school learning experiences were more likely to be peer supported, interest powered, and production centered. They were also more likely to engage youth and adults around a shared purpose and to take advantage of openly networked infrastructures. Two theoretical frameworks from the field of information behavior are used to explore the distinct successes and challenges associated with promoting rich learning experiences in each setting. They add that all students will have a customized educational plan with connectivity, interactivity and machine learning. They also explore the idea of information alchemy that changes data into wisdom.

The article discusses the emergence of fanfiction, face-to-face writers' group meetings, and special events that can give opportunities for aspiring writers to share their work with an audience. The sheer volume of stories published on fanfiction sites show the need for readers to recast themselves as writers whether in schools or public libraries. The need to promote that guiding and promoting reading and sharing of ideas and information are at core of the mission of the library is tackled.
