In this article, we describe a case study research conducted to validate a set of lesson plans specifically designed for collaborative work with children. A group of nine teachers implemented the lessons in their classes. Data were gathered by means of ethnographical notes to determine children's reactions to collaborative work. Class observations and surveys to teachers on their perception of the lesson plans and collaborative learning were used to collect the data. Results show that children can indeed work in collaboration when given the adequate conditions. This kind of work among children helps them to negotiate meanings and find solutions for learning spaces. Implications point in the direction of teacher education programs that can help teachers understand the principles and practices of collaborative learning with children.

This study aims to compare computed tomography (CT) with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) by using texture analysis (TA) to detect condylar bone marrow changes associated with the flattening and erosion of cortical bone. A total of 47 patients from the Dentomaxillofacial Radiology Division at São Paulo State University were evaluated. Images from 250 CT and 250 MRI images were assessed by experienced radiologists employing OnDemand3D software. Texture parameters were extracted with MaZda software (version 4.6), and we focused on regions of interest within the condyles. Statistical analysis revealed significant differences in texture parameters between the affected and control groups. CT images showed higher correlation values in cases of flattening, whereas MRI images demonstrated substantial changes in texture parameters for both flattening and erosion. These findings suggest that the texture analysis of CT and MRI images can effectively detect early and advanced degenerative changes in the TMJ, thus providing valuable insights into the underlying pathophysiology and aiding in early intervention and treatment planning.

In the present study, we aimed to assess frontal ethmoidal cells by using segmentation 3D software to establish a possible correlation between volume variation and both gender and age, as well as a relationship with Keros classification. Helical computed tomography images were obtained from 71 patients for analysis, in which the agger nasi cell, supra agger cell, supra agger frontal cell, supra bulla frontal cell, supraorbital ethmoidal cell, supra bulla cell, and frontal septal cell were identified and segmented to obtain their volume. Significant differences in volume were found for age and gender regarding agger nasi cells (p-value = 0.017), supra agger cells (p-value < 0.001), and frontal septal cells (p-value = 0.049). In the frontal septal cells, an increase of one year in age reduced the volume by 0.309, on average. According to Keros classification, the mean volumes were 10.07 and 25.64, respectively, for types II and III, both being greater than that of type I. Extracting volumetric data by using segmentation software in agger nasi cells, supra agger cells, and frontal septal cells may be useful for obtaining additional information related to age, in addition to possibly contributing to elucidating the anatomical variations in the region and an identification forensic tool.

Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are highly attractive for applications in the field of biosensing, particularly for colorimetric nucleic acid detection. Their unique optical properties, which are highly sensitive to changes in their environment, make them ideal candidates for developing simple, rapid, and cost-effective assays. When functionalized with oligonucleotides (Au-nanoprobes), they can undergo aggregation or dispersion in the presence of complementary sequences, leading to distinct color changes that serve as a visual signal for detection. Aggregation-based assays offer significant advantages over other homogeneous assays, such as fluorescence-based methods, namely, label-free protocols, rapid interactions in homogeneous solutions, and detection by the naked eye or using low-cost instruments. Despite promising results, the application of Au-nanoprobe-based colorimetric assays in complex biological matrices faces several challenges. The most significant are related to the colloidal stability and oligonucleotide functionalization of the Au-nanoprobes but also to the mode of detection. The type of functionalization method, type of spacer, the oligo–AuNPs ratio, changes in pH, temperature, or ionic strength influence the Au-nanoprobe colloidal stability and thus the performance of the assay. This review elucidates characteristics of the Au-nanoprobes that are determined for colorimetric gold nanoparticles (AuNPs)-based nucleic acid detection, and how they influence the sensitivity and specificity of the colorimetric assay. Background: This research aims to investigate the influence of environmental factors on the treatment efficacy of ocular lubricants in patients from urban areas with dry eye disease (DED). Methods: A phase IV clinical trial, which included 173 patients from major cities in Mexico, was randomly assigned to use ocular lubricants four times a day for 30 days. Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI), noninvasive tear film break-up time (NIBUT), ocular staining, and conjunctival hyperemia (CH) among other factors like weather, and air pollution as covariates were analysed. Results: After 30 days, OSDI score decreased by 14.8 points (p< 0.001), and NIBUT increased by 2.9 seconds (p< 0.001), with longer values observed in patients recruited in autumn and winter (additional 1.8 seconds, p< 0.05) compared to those recruited in spring. Patients living in cities with cooler weather and high humidity, but low air quality had higher OSDI and conjunctival stain scores of up to 4.4 and 0.3 points, respectively, as compared to those living in cities with similar pollution and humidity levels but with higher temperatures (p-values= 0.019 and 0.050). Patients with moderate CH had an increase of up to 0.8 points in their corneal stain score (p< 0.010). We also found that ozone levels were related to the predicted changes in OSDI and NIBUT. Conclusion: This study demonstrated the impact of environmental factors on the signs and symptoms of DED and suggests that patients residing in cities with inadequately controlled air pollution can benefit from using ocular lubricants to alleviate their symptoms. All‐oral, direct‐acting antivirals can cure hepatitis C virus (HCV) in almost all infected individuals; yet, many individuals with chronic HCV are not treated, and the incidence of acute HCV is increasing in some countries, including the United States. Strains on healthcare resources during the COVID‐19 pandemic negatively impacted the progress toward the World Health Organization goal to eliminate HCV by 2030, especially among persons who inject drugs (PWID). Here, we present a holistic conceptual framework termed LOTUS (Leveraging Opportunities for Treatment/User Simplicity), designed to integrate the current HCV practice landscape and invigorate HCV treatment programs in the setting of endemic COVID‐19: (A) treatment as prevention (especially among PWID), (B) recognition that HCV cure may be achieved with variable adherence with evidence supporting some forgiveness for missed doses, (C) treatment of all persons with active HCV infection (viremic), regardless of acuity, (D) minimal monitoring (MinMon) during treatment, and (E) rapid test and treat (TnT). The objective of this article is to review the current literature supporting each LOTUS petal; identify remaining gaps in knowledge or data; define the remaining barriers facing healthcare providers; and review evidence‐based strategies for overcoming key barriers. The emergency department (ED) has increasingly become an important public health partner in non‐targeted hepatitis C virus (HCV) testing and referral to care efforts. HCV has traditionally been an infection associated with the Baby Boomer generation; however, recent exacerbation of the opioid epidemic has resulted in a growing number of younger cohorts, namely Millennials, also impacted by HCV. Examination of this age‐related demographic shift, including subsequent linkage success and linkage barriers, from the perspective of an ED‐based testing and linkage programme may have implications for future population and health systems interventions. A retrospective descriptive chart review was performed, inclusive of data from August 2015 through December 2020. We compared the quantity of positive HCV screening antibody (Ab) and confirmatory (RNA) tests and further considered linkage rates and correlative demographics (e.g. gender, race). Patient barriers to HCV care linkage (e.g. substance misuse, lack of health insurance, homelessness) were also evaluated. The data set was disaggregated by birth cohort to include Silent Generation (SG) (1928–45), Baby Boomer (BB) (1946–64), Generation X (Gen X) (1965–80), Millennial (1981–96) and Generation Z (1997–2012). Descriptive statistics and chi‐square analysis were performed. Overall, 83,817 patients were tested for HCV (50.6% of eligible); 6187 (7.4%) were HCV Ab positive, and 2665 were HCV RNA positive (3.2%). RNA‐positive individuals were more likely to be white (70.4%) and male (67.7%); generational distribution was similar (BB 33.3%, Gen X 32.0% and Millennials 32.7%). Amongst Ab‐positive patients, white (45.5%), male (47.2%) and Millennial (49.7%) individuals were most likely to be RNA‐positive. Overall, 28.1% of the RNA‐positive cohort successfully linked to care; linkage to care rates were significantly higher in older generations (38.1% in BB vs. 17.8% in Millennials) (p <.00001). Over 90% were identified as having at least one linkage to care barrier. Younger generations (Gen X and Millennials) were disproportionately impacted by linkage barriers, including incarceration, lack of health insurance, history of mental health and substance use disorders, as well as history of or active injection drug use (IDU) (p <.00001). Older generations (SG and BB) were more likely to be impacted by competing medical comorbidities (p <.00001). The ED population represents a particularly vulnerable, at‐risk cohort with a high prevalence of HCV and linkage to care barriers. While past HCV‐specific recommendations and interventions have focused on Baby Boomers, this data suggests that younger generations, including Gen X and Millennials, are increasingly affected by HCV and face disparate social risk and social need factors which impede definitive care linkage and treatment. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the use of texture analysis for characterization of radicular cysts and periapical granulomas and to assess its efficacy to differentiate between both lesions with histological diagnosis. Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) exhibit improved optical and spectral properties compared to bulk materials, making them suitable for the detection of DNA, RNA, antigens, and antibodies. Here, we describe a simple, selective, and rapid non-cross linking detection assay, using approx. 35 nm spherical Au nanoprobes, for a common mutation occurring in exon 19 of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), associated with non-small-cell lung cancer cells. AuNPs were synthesized based on the seed-mediated growth method and functionalized with a specific 16 bp thiolated oligonucleotide using a pH-assisted method. Both AuNPs and Au nanoprobes proved to be highly stable and monodisperse through ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry, dynamic light scattering (DLS), and electrophoretic light scattering (ELS). Our results indicate a detection limit of 1.5 µg mL−1 using a 0.15 nmol dm−3 Au nanoprobe concentration. In conclusion, this work presents an effective possibility for a straightforward, fast, and inexpensive alternative for the detection of DNA sequences related to lung cancer, leading to a potential platform for early diagnosis of lung cancer patients. Ballast behaviour has a profound impact on global track performance and durability, particularly for turnouts where dynamic forces are substantial. As ballast is a discontinuous material, this paper proposes the application of a Discrete Element Method (DEM) to model its behaviour under a conventional track turnout, a new approach that has not yet been tried for turnouts, only for main tracks. The model was validated with real vertical stiffness data measured in an actual turnout and used to analyse ballast behaviour under dynamic traffic loads. The results show remarkable differences in ballast behaviour for train speeds close to 180 km/h, as particle interactions and stress levels extend to the entire ballast layer. At lower speeds, the stress under the sleeper forms a trapezoidal shape for a given cross-section, while the rest of the layer remains barely affected. Overall, the DEM model is a reliable tool for simulating ballast behaviour and provides new insights into ballast-turnout interactions, which may help improve maintenance in these essential track elements. One of the limitations of remote sensing is the low spatial resolution of the open-access multispectral sensors, generating a mixture of spatial information. The mixed pixels can be modelled as the linear combination of fundamental components, called endmember, with a weighted contribution or abundance. The development of linear unmixing algorithms considering spatial and spectral information has recently increased. Some unmixing methods have relied on segmentation to integrate spatial data, and one of the most used is superpixel-based segmentation. However, previous work in superpixel-based unmixing focuses on using superpixels as uniform regions. Commonly, linear unmixing is used on hyperspectral imagery, and limited literature is found with multispectral images. This paper aims to propose a new preprocessing approach for multispectral linear unmixing called Superpixel Linear Independent Preprocessing. The proposed approach generates a set of candidates to endmembers based on spatial-spectral information; these are the input of traditional endmember extraction methods for multispectral unmixing. Objective: To evaluate survival in patients with cardiac resynchronization with or without cardioverterdefibrillator versus patients with implantable cardioverter-defibrillator alone Materials and methods: Retrospective cohort, the primary end point was death from cardiac causes, the exposure was electrophysiological therapies, and the information sources were medical files and other records. Results: 70 elderly patients with functional devices; 82 % of them received optimized medical therapy. No significant association was found between survival of patients with cardiac resynchronization therapy with or without defibrillator and cardioverter-defibrillator therapy alone (log rank test, p = 0.54), but the former had a longer survival time (ANOVA p = 0.0012). The hazard ratio was 0.017 for day 371 and 0.15 for day 2169. Fourteen deaths occurred during the observation period, three of them from non-cardiac causes. Conclusion: Cardiac resynchronization therapy was associated with significantly longer survival time.

The role of the Emergency Department (ED) as a vital constituent in Hepatitis C (HCV) screening has become increasingly evident. A key component of the ED's role in HCV screening is the ability to effectively link HCV-RNA positive patients to definitive, HCV-specific care, to include direct-acting antiviral (DAA) medication with resultant sustained virologic response (SVR). We sought to consider the rate of HCV-specific linkage, DAA initiation, and SVR obtained in HCV patients identified from an ED screening program. A retrospective chart review was conducted in February of 2022 of all individuals who participated in an opt-out ED-based HCV screening program between January 2018 and December 2019. Data was disaggregated by race, gender, age/birth cohort, insurance status, and achievement of sustained virologic response (SVR). Bivariate analysis using Pearson's chi-square was utilized to compare outcomes based on insurance status, race, sex, and birth cohort. Of 66,634 individuals screened for HCV during the study period, 885 (1.33%) patients were RNA-positive. Of those individuals, 121 (13.67%) were linked to HCV-specific care. Of those linked, the majority (66.9%) were male, white (66.1%; 33.1% Black), baby boomers or older (53.7%) and publicly insured (57.9%; private insurance 23.1%, self-pay 19%). Among linked patients, 88 (72.7%) started DAA medication. Mirroring linked demographics, majority were male (64.8%), white (64.8%), baby boomers or older (52.3%), and publicly insured (57.6%). White patients initiated on DAA were more likely to obtain SVR (64.9% versus 41.9% Black; p =.04) and uninsured patients were more likely to obtain SVR (82.4% versus 50.7% insured; p =.02). Bivariate consideration of SVR-patients specifically demonstrates that Black patients tended to be older, with significant overrepresentation of Baby boomers (77.5%) as compared to whites (37.5%; p <.0001). Black patients were also more likely to be publicly insured (82.5%) while white patients were more likely to have private insurance (28.8%) or be uninsured (26.3%) than their Black counterparts (12.5% and 5% respectively; p <.05). An ED-based HCV screening program can result in successful HCV-specific linkage and care, to include DAA initiation and ultimately, SVR. Among linked patients, specific cohort considerations may demonstrate differences in age and insurance status which may have implications on DAA application and adherence, and therefore, individual ability to achieve SVR. Early and accurate detection of infection by pathogenic microorganisms, such as Plasmodium, the causative agent of malaria, is critical for clinical diagnosis and ultimately determines the patient's outcome. We have combined a polystyrene-based microfluidic device with an immunoassay which utilises Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) to detect malaria. The method can be easily translated to a point-of-care testing format and shows excellent sensitivity and specificity, when compared to the gold standard for laboratorial detection of Plasmodium infections. The device can be fabricated in less than 30 min by direct patterning on shrinkable polystyrene sheets of adaptable three-dimensional microfluidic chips. To validate the microfluidic system, samples of P. falciparum-infected red blood cell cultures were used. The SERS-based immunoassay enabled the detection of 0.0012 ± 0.0001% parasitaemia in a P. falciparum-infected red blood cell culture supernatant, an ∼7-fold higher sensitivity than that attained by most rapid diagnostic tests. Our approach successfully overcomes the main challenges of the current Plasmodium detection methods, including increased reproducibility, sensitivity, and specificity. Furthermore, our system can be easily adapted for detection of other pathogens and has excellent properties for early diagnosis of infectious diseases, a decisive step towards lowering their high burden on healthcare systems worldwide.
