The integration of national security concerns in states' treatment of international migration has become a prominent issue in recent years as global migration is regularly presented as a security threat to host countries. In this paper, we illuminate a number of patterns and determinants of political parties' treatment of immigration as a security matter–the securitisation of migration–through the comparative study of a new data set of parties' platforms in Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States that spans seven decades. We distinguish between the salience of migration and of security in parties' platforms and explore the effect of various migration-related domestic-level factors in accounting for both phenomena. Our empirical strategy to assess the extent to which political parties have presented, promoted, and framed the security concerns associated with migration is based on textual data from parties' platforms. We report three findings. First, parties have increasingly mobilised migration in their platforms regardless of ideological or partisan commitments since the 1990s, and the number of refugees hosted by a country constitutes the primary migration-related explanatory factor for this fact. Second, we show that mainstream right-wing parties account for the increase in the securitisation of migration in parties' platforms. Finally, among migration-related domestic factors, the number of refugees has (surprisingly) a negative impact on the securitisation of migration in platforms. Overall, this paper illuminates important patterns in how parties discursively link security and migration, and investigates the determinants of this widespread phenomenon. HIGH throughput screening (Drug development) ,GLUE ,ACADEMIA - Abstract
Targeted protein degraders such as PROTACs and molecular glues are a rapidly emerging therapeutic modality within industry and academia. Degraders possess unique mechanisms of action that lead to the removal of specific proteins by co-opting the cell's natural degradation mechanisms via induced proximity. Their optimisation thus far has often been largely empirical, requiring the synthesis and screening of a large number of analogues. In addition, the synthesis and development of degraders is often challenging, leading to lengthy optimisation campaigns to deliver candidate-quality compounds. This review highlights how the synthesis of degraders has evolved in recent years, in particular focusing on means of applying high-throughput chemistry and screening approaches to expedite these timelines, which we anticipate to be valuable in shaping the future of degrader optimisation campaigns. MEDICAL history taking , *MEDICAL students , *PULMONARY embolism , *DIAGNOSTIC errors , *LEG pain , *CHEST pain , *MEDICAL education - Abstract
Diagnostic errors are a relevant health-care problem. Although medical history taking is usually the first step in patients' assessment there are only limited data on the association of its quality and diagnostic accuracy. Accordingly, this prospective randomized simulator-based single-blind trial aimed to investigate the effects of initial cues and history taking skills on diagnostic accuracy. 198 medical students (135 females) were given the task to assess a patient presenting with simulated acute pulmonary embolism. Participants were randomized to six versions of the scenario differing only in the initial cues, i.e., in the reply of the patient to the initial question about the reason for his visit. In three of six versions, initial cues were restricted to thoracic symptoms (chest pain, dyspnoea, or combination of both). In the remaining three versions, initial cues consisted of thoracic and extra-thoracic (leg pain, immobilization) symptoms. The primary outcome was diagnostic accuracy. The number of initial cues was unrelated to diagnostic accuracy. However, the combination of extra-thoracic and thoracic cues resulted in a higher diagnostic accuracy than thoracic cues only (52/96 vs. 35/102, p = 0.006). In multivariate regression, the number of questions asked from the categories "risk factors of pulmonary embolism" (regression coefficient 0.15, p < 0.001) and "dyspnea" (regression coefficient 0.12, p < 0.001) predicted diagnostic accuracy. Moreover, questions relating to "immobilization" (regression coefficient 0.42, p < 0.001), "onset of dyspnea" (regression coefficient 0.23, p = 0.003), and "modifying factors of chest pain" (regression coefficient 0.20, p = 0.04) independently predicted diagnostic accuracy. Interestingly, more systematic history taking was associated with lower diagnostic accuracy (regression coefficient-0.27, p < 0.001). The present trial demonstrates that during history taking cues initially revealed by the patient, kind and category of questions asked during the interview, and the interview's structural systematics affect diagnostic accuracy. Let d be an integer greater or equal to 2 and let k be a d-dimensional random vector. We call Gaussian wave model with random wavevector k any stationary Gaussian random field defined on ℝd with covariance function t → ...[cos(k:t)]. Any stationary Gaussian random field on ℝd can be studied as a random wave. The purpose of the present paper is to link properties of the random wave with the distribution of the random wavevector, with a focus on geometric properties. We mainly concentrate on the study of the level sets measure, giving for instance a local estimate of its variance. In the planar case, we prove that the expected length of the nodal lines is decreasing as the anisotropy of the wavevector is increasing, and we study the direction that maximizes the expected length of the crest lines. We illustrate our results on two specific models: a generalization of Berry's monochromatic planar waves and a spatiotemporal sea wave model whose random wavevector is supported by the Airy surface in ℝ³. According to a general theorem, these two Gaussian fields are anisotropic almost sure solutions of partial differential equations that involve the Laplacian operator: Δf + κ²f = 0 (where κ = ...k...) for the former, Δf + ∂t4 f = 0 for the latter. The article discusses the history of the application of payment and access policies for the National Library and National Archives of Quebec in the 20th century. It describes the collection management policies of the notarial archives of Quebec, the release of archives for public research, and the relation of the national archives to the Canadian Department of Justice. Other subjects under discussion include the need for the state to access documents for the prosecution of criminals, the Quebecois constitution and notion of civil rights, and the Canadian Supreme Court's ruling regarding the right to privacy. more...
