A new rictulariid nematode Pterygodermatites (Mesopectines) valladaresi n. sp., parasite of the house mouse Mus musculus (Rodentia: Muridae) in the Canary Islands (Spain) is described by means of light and scanning electron microscopy. The new species belongs to the subgenus Mesopectines characterized by a more or less dorsal orientation of the buccal capsule, the presence of three oesophageal teeth, the morphology of the oral denticles and the Spirurida type of arrangement of caudal papillae in males. The most discriminant characteristics between the new species and the existing species in the subgenus Mesopectines are (a) the number of cuticular projection pairs (62–64), (b) the size of right and left spicules (respectively, 62–90 µm and 123–139 µm), (c) the number of midventral fans in males (3–4), (d) the number of prevulvar/total cuticular projection pairs (38–42/63–71), (e) the posterior differentiation of combs into spines in relation to the position of the vulva and (f) the anterior position of the vulva in relation to the oesophagus-intestine junction in females. Parasitized hosts and geographical distribution are also useful criteria to distinguish P. (Me.) valladaresi n. sp. from the remaining species of the subgenus. In addition, the cox1 sequence of the new species is provided and compared with available data of related species.

A new microsporidian Toguebayea baccigeri n. gen., n. sp., hyperparasite of Bacciger israelensis (Digenea, Faustulidae), parasite of Boops boops (Teleostei, Sparidae) is described by means of transmission electron microscopy. The phylogenetic analysis, based on the SSU rDNA gene, places the new species in the clade containing mainly crustacean-infecting microsporidia of the genus Cucumispora, within superclade V (Marinosporidia) sensu Vossbrinck et al., 2014. Mature spores of T. baccigeri are ovoid, uninucleated and measure 2.5 × 1.4 μm. The number of coils of the polar tube is 8–10. The polaroplast is composed of an external lamellar part and an internal vesicular or granular part. The main differences that distinguish the new genus and new species from the closely related microsporidia include hyperparasitism in a digenean host infecting a marine fish, the geographic distribution (coast of Tunisia), presence of one nucleus at all developmental stages, disporoblastic sporogony, and the absence of sporophorous vacuoles.

The aim of this paper is to interpret the political discourse employed in the process of integrating foreign nationals into Spain’s Armed Forces (2002-2017) and collate it with a wide range of primary sources. The sources include statistics from the Spanish Ministry of Defence, legislation, opinion polls conducted by the public research institute the Centre for Sociological Research (CIS) and data series from Spain’s official statistics agency (INE). The study takes a constructivist approach that seeks to uncover the implicit elements underlying the discourses of public policies, ideas and ideological concepts. It offers a view that is complemented by a historical reconstruction of the facts and an institutional analysis that combines formal elements (laws, policies and opinion polls) with informal components (non-codified practices or ideas and shared meanings).

Las demencias representan un desafío creciente para la salud pública. Su prevalencia, tanto a nivel mundial como nacional, ha aumentado durante las últimas décadas. La atención hospitalaria de estos pacientes es compleja debido a la diversidad de causas de ingreso, y el egreso depende de variados factores consensuados entre los profesionales de la salud y el entorno familiar, siendo este último un indicador crítico de la atención sanitaria. Este estudio observacional y descriptivo analizó la tasa de egreso hospitalario de personas con demencia en Chile, comparando los periodos previos y durante la pandemia de COVID-19, entre los años 2016 y 2023. Los resultados indican una disminución en las tasas de egreso hospitalario durante la pandemia, lo que podría reflejar los efectos de las medidas sanitarias, la redistribución de recursos hacia el manejo de la crisis por COVID-19 y el impacto del temor al contagio entre los pacientes y sus familias. Además, se evidenciaron diferencias significativas según el género y el grupo etario, especialmente en las mujeres mayores de 80 años, quienes presentaron una disminución significativa en sus tasas de egreso hospitalario durante la pandemia. Este estudio subraya la importancia de un enfoque integral y equitativo en la atención de personas con demencia, considerando las particularidades de género y edad, así como la necesidad de fortalecer las políticas de salud pública para garantizar un acceso adecuado a los servicios de salud en contextos de crisis sanitaria.

The prevalence and intensity of the parasites from 50 wild doves (Columba livia) from the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, in the island of Tenerife (Canary Archipelago), were studied. The following ectoparasites were found in apparently healthy pigeons (prevalences are shown in percentage (%) and mean intensities with their standard deviations): the acari Dermanyssus gallinae (De Geer, 1778) (6 241 .0 ± 138.9) and Tinaminyssus melloi Fain, 1962 (10 %, 218.3 ± 117.3); the louses, Columbicola columbae Linnaeus, 1758 (100 %, 111.4 ± 76.8) and Campanulotes bidentatus Scopoli, 1763 (94 %, 48.4 ± 26.6); and the pigeon fly, Pseudolynchia canariensis Macquart, 1839 (36 %, 6.2 ± 1.6). The endoparasites we found, were: a haemoprotozoan species, Haemoproteus columbae Kruze, 1890 (82 %, 14.8 ± 10.3 per 1000); coccidian oocysts, Eimeria sp. (50 %, 0.2 x 103 ± 1.7 x 103 per gr); a cestode species Raillietina micracantha (Fuhrmann, 1909) López Neyra, 1947 (44 %, 12.3 ± 9.4); and four nematode species, Tetrameres (Tetrameres) fissispina (Diesing, 1861) Travassos, 1915 (4 %, 99.5 ± 34,1), Synhimantus (Dispharynx) spiralis (Molin, 1858) (8 %, 46. 8 ± 11.6), Ascaridia columbae (Gmelin, 1790) Travassos, 1913 (40 %, 8.4 ± 8.8) and Aonchotheca sp. (18 %, 6.0 ± 3.1). Several species detected in our study can be pathogens for C. bollii and C. junoniae, which are endemic pigeons of the Canary Islands, considered endangered species. Parasites (ectoparasites, protozoa and helminths) of C. livia found in Tenerife and others from wild and farm birds in the island were considered as healthy controls.

Background: In healthcare systems prioritizing care of older adults, resource limitations and escalating demand often impede access to outpatient specialized geriatric services. Objectives: This study, theoretically guided by the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR), aimed to explore barriers and facilitators in implementing a centralized “Geri-Hub.” The Geri-Hub is a centralized intake system established within 2 hospital systems to coordinate outpatient and community-based services for older adults, aiming to connect them with the most appropriate care in a timely manner. Methods: Qualitative insights were gathered from healthcare professionals at 2 academic institutions in the process of consolidating services. Through open-ended surveys and semi-structured interviews, we solicited feedback on referral management, waiting times, and overall work experiences. Results: Thirteen frequently referring providers and a cohort of 9 geriatricians, along with 4 administrators, contributed to the study. Geriatricians emphasized streamlined referrals, flexible scheduling for urgent cases, and a target wait time of 3 months. Administrators stressed standardized referral procedures, defined roles, and accessible referral information. Discussion: The findings underscored the need for straightforward referral processes, enhanced communication on referral statuses, and reduced wait times. Optimizing these processes could potentially mitigate resource utilization issues and improve patient outcomes in healthcare systems. This research highlights the critical role of timely access to geriatric services during transformative phases in healthcare delivery.

Science has long been regarded as an important subject in a school curriculum and science teachers play a vital role in the learning process of the students in the science classrooms as well as in other subjects. However, students still encounter problems related to their science teachers, which significantly influence their academic performance in science. Using a qualitative phenomenological design, an in-depth and systematic analysis of the students' experiences gathered during the face-to-face interview provided a detailed explanation of the teacher-based adversities in the science classroom. The students who participated in this study revealed that they had encountered various teacher-based adversities, which disrupted and affected their learning and performance in the science classroom. Students experienced having a teacher of limited pedagogical content knowledge in science, and little commitment to teach science in the classroom. Consequently, the students were not encouraged to learn science; they lost interest to learn science as well as they have developed a negative attitude towards their teachers and the subject. In the same manner, the students experienced difficulty in understanding the topic and inability to connect previous information to a new one because of having a teacher of little commitment in the instruction of science. With this, the interested parties such as the teachers, administrators, students can develop appropriate actions to address these problems not only in the science classroom but in the school in general.

The red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) is a widely distributed invasive species that is listed in the Delivering Alien Invasive Species Inventory for Europe. Native to North America, it has been introduced to numerous regions, such as the Canary Islands, Spain. Previous studies have confirmed the role of this crayfish in the maintenance of several foodborne pathogenic bacteria. Therefore, the aim of this study was to analyze the main zoonotic bacterial and parasitic pathogens present in a P. clarkii population introduced to the island of Tenerife, Canary Islands, and to assess the potential risk to public health and native fauna. A total of 22 crayfish from Tenerife were analyzed using Biofire FilmArray Gastrointestinal Panels and culture–PCR methods. The results show the presence of Plesiomonas shigelloides, Shigella/enteroinvasive Escherichia coli, enteropathogenic Escherichia coli, Salmonella ser. Enteritidis, Salmonella ser. Typhimurium, and Salmonella ser. Typhi. These results demonstrate the presence of a variety of pathogenic bacteria in the red swamp crayfish in Tenerife that represent a significant concern in terms of public health and conservation. Implementing educational campaigns to inform the community about the risks associated with handling and consuming contaminated crayfish, as well as initiatives for the restoration of the contaminated ecosystem, are necessary to prevent the transmission of the foodborne pathogens.

Squalene (SQ) is a natural compound with anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, and anti-oxidant effects, but due to its low solubility, its biological properties have been greatly underestimated. This study aims to explore the differences in gene expression patterns of four newly synthesized amphipathic ethylene glycol (EG) derivatives of SQ by whole-genome transcriptomics analysis using DNA microarray to examine the mRNA expression profile of adipocytes differentiated from 3T3-L1 cells treated with SQ and its EG derivatives. Enrichment analyses of the transcriptional data showed that compared with SQ, its EG derivatives exerted different, in most cases desirable, biological responses. EG derivatives showed increased enrichment of mitochondrial functions, lipid and glucose metabolism, and inflammatory response. Mono-, di-, and tetra-SQ showed higher enrichment of the cellular component-ribosome. Histological staining showed EG derivatives prevented excessive lipid accumulation. Additionally, mitochondrial transcription factors showed upregulation in tetra-SQ-treated cells. Notably, EG derivatives showed better anti-inflammatory effects. Further, gene-disease association analysis predicted substantial improvement in the bioactivities of SQ derivatives in metabolic diseases. Cluster analyses revealed di- and tetra-SQ had more functional similarities than others, reflected in their scanning electron microscopy images; both di- and tetra-SQ self-organized into similar sizes and shapes of vesicles, subsequently improving their cation binding activities. Protein-protein interaction networks further revealed that cation binding activity might explain a major part, if not all, of the differences observed in functional analyses. Altogether, the addition of EG derivatives may improve the biological responses of SQ and thus may enhance its health-promoting potential.

The agricultural sector of Colombia supports the national economy and food security due to the rich lands for cultivation. Although Colombia has a vast hydrological basin, climate change can impact agricultural productivity, generating economic and social adverse effects. For this, we evaluated the impact of some environmental variables on the production of the most sold crops using production, climatic, and hydrological data of the 1121 municipalities from 2007 to 2020. We modeled the production of coffee, rice, palm oil, sugarcane, and corn, adopting a Bayesian spatio-temporal model that involved a set of environmental variables: average temperature, minimum temperature, maximum temperature, evapotranspiration, precipitation, runoff, soil moisture, vapor pressure, radiation, and wind speed. We found that increases in the average temperatures can affect coffee (-0.2% per °C), rice (-3.76% per °C), and sugarcane (-0.19% per °C) production, meanwhile, these increases can boost palm oil (+2.55% per °C) and corn (+1.28% per °C) production in Colombia. This statement implies that the agricultural sector needs to substitute land use, promoting the production of palm oil and corn. Although our results did not find a significant effect of hydrological variables in any crop, suggesting that the abundance of water in Colombia might balance the impact of these variables. The increases in vapor pressure impact all the crops negatively (between -11.2% to -0.43% per kPa), except rice, evidencing that dry air conditions affect agricultural production. Colombia must manage the production location of the traditional products and implement agro-industrial technologies to avoid the climate change impact on crops.

Abstract Background In the Canary Islands there are no previous data about tapeworms (Cestoda) of rodents. In order to identify the hymenolepidid species present in these hosts, a survey of 1,017 murine (349 Rattus rattus, 13 Rattus norvegicus and 655 Mus musculus domesticus) was carried out in the whole Archipelago. Molecular studies based on nuclear ITS1 and mitochondrial COI loci were performed to confirm the identifications and to analyse the levels of genetic variation and differentiation. Results Three species of hymenolepidids were identified: Hymenolepis diminuta, Rodentolepis microstoma and Rodentolepis fraterna. Hymenolepis diminuta (in rats) and R. microstoma (in mice) showed a widespread distribution in the Archipelago, and R. fraterna was the least spread species, appearing only on five of the islands. The hymenolepidids found on Fuerteventura, Lanzarote and La Graciosa were restricted to one area. The COI network of H. diminuta showed that the haplotypes from Lanzarote and Fuerteventura are the most distant with respect to the other islands, but clearly related among them. Conclusions Founder effects and biotic and abiotic factors could have played important role in the presence/absence of the hymenolepidid species in determined locations. The haplotypes from the eastern islands (Fuerteventura and Lanzarote) seem to have shared an ancestral haplotype very distant from the most frequent one that was found in the rest of the islands. Two colonization events or a single event with subsequent isolation and reduced gene flow between western-central and eastern islands, have taken place in the Archipelago. The three tapeworms detected are zoonotic species, and their presence among rodents from this Archipelago suggests a potential health risk to human via environmental contamination in high risk areas. However, the relatively low prevalence of infestations detected and the focal distribution of some of these species on certain islands reduce the general transmission risk to human.

Erythrolamprus albertguentheri (Colubridae) es una especie endémica de la región del Chaco en Bolivia, Paraguay y Argentina. Documentamos un primer registro de la presencia de E. albertguentheri en el departamento de Santa Cruz (Bolivia) fuera de su rango de distribución conocido y ampliamos su distribución geográfica hacia el norte de Bolivia, asimismo reportamos un primer caso de depredación sobre Leptodactylus fuscus (Leptodactylidae). E. albertguentheri es una de las especies de colúbridos menos estudiadas y datos de su distribución e historia natural aún son incipientes.

En la ciudad de Medellín, en el departamento de Antioquia, Colombia, se atienden numerosos grupos socioeducativos vulnerables. En este contexto, se ha observado que se espera de estudiantes, docentes y otros miembros de las comunidades la adopción permanente, de una postura resiliente ante las condiciones marcadas por la adversidad. Para estudiar este fenómeno, se presenta en este artículo una revisión documental sobre el término resiliencia y su recurrencia en diversos proyectos educativos. Se revisa el concepto de resiliencia y su incidencia en la educación para, posteriormente, reflexionar sobre la necesidad de abandonar la naturalización del desamparo y proponer un camino de resistencia dentro de la escuela, en el aprendizaje de la lucha por los derechos. Finalmente, se incentiva a la conformación de un sujeto político, que pueda adoptar una postura activa, con el propósito de dirigir la atención hacia acciones que logren cambiar la lógica impuesta de vivir en infortunio. RESILIENCE IN THE EDUCATIONAL CONTEXT OF THE CITY OF MEDELLÍN, COLOMBIA Abstract In the city of Medellín, in the department of Antioquia, Colombia, numerous vulnerable socio-educational groups are served. In this context, it has been observed that students, teachers and other members of the communities are expected to permanently adopt a resilient posture in the face of conditions marked by adversity. To study this phenomenon, this article presents a documentary review on the term resilience and its recurrence in various educational projects. The concept of resilience and its impact on education are reviewed to later reflect on the need to abandon the naturalization of homelessness and propose a path of resistance within the school, in learning to fight for rights. Finally, the formation of a political subject is encouraged, who can adopt an active stance, with the purpose of directing attention to actions that manage to change the imposed logic of living in misfortune. A relevant Religious Education needs to confront the life-threatening global issues humanity faces today. The present study investigates how Catholic Life Formation (CLF) through religious instruction may predict environmental attitudes among students in Cebu City, Philippines. This study analyzes how the following variables may influence Christian environmentalism: students’ reception of CLF inputs, Catholic Social Teachings (CST) perceptions, and students’ beliefs and environmental responses (STB) from a sample of 491 Grade 12 SH students of a private university in Cebu, Philippines. This descriptive quantitative survey used ordinal logistic regression to test our model. We adopted a two-step procedure to gather data: First, an open-ended interview was used to tease the themes and viewpoints of students. Second, incorporating the qualitative output from the interviews, a survey was conducted using a researcher-made self-report paired with the Christian Environmentalism Scale (CES) to describe student attitudes toward the environment. The findings are discussed with respect to Religious Education and CLF environmental advocacy.

Ultrastructural characters of spermiogenesis and the mature spermatozoon of the cestode Meggittina gerbilli (Cyclophyllidea: Catenotaeniidae), a parasite of the Lesser Egyptian gerbil (Gerbillus gerbillus) and the North African gerbil (Gerbillus campestris) (Rodentia: Muridae) in the Djebel Dahar (South of Tunisia), were studied using transmission electron microscopy. The spermiogenesis of M. gerbilli is of Bâ and Marchand’s type III, which is mainly characterized by a proximodistal fusion of a single flagellum with a cytoplasmic extension. In this catenotaeniid, the proximal fusion is preceded by a 90° rotation of the flagellum. The spermatozoon is a Levron et al. type VI, which presents a single axoneme with the 9 + ‘1’ trepaxonematan pattern, a periaxonemal sheath, two crest-like bodies, twisted cortical microtubules, and a spiraled nucleus. The obtained results show similarities with the remaining studied catenotaeniids, namely Catenotaenia pusilla and Skrjabinotaenia lobata. The results are compared and discussed according to several characteristics found in the catenotaeniids and other studied cyclophyllideans.

Media and information literacy is the process of empowering people to seek, evaluate, use and create information effectively in order to achieve their personal, social, occupational and educational goals. This paper presents the dimensions and categories of an instrument (the MIL questionnaire) developed within the University of the Basque Country's UNESCO Chair in Communication and Educational Values, which aims to analyse media and information literacy levels amongst adolescents. The instrument is based on four dimensions that encompass basic aspects of the field of educommunication. These dimensions are: (1) Media access and use; (2) Media language and critical comprehension; (3) Production and programming processes; and (4) Transforming one's situation through communication. The aim of this piece of research was to test the reliability and validity of this instrument in a pilot study conducted with 167 adolescents aged between 13 and 15, from schools in Colombia, Ecuador and Spain. With the exception of the first dimension, the results indicate that the questionnaire has an acceptable reliability level and is an adequate instrument for evaluating media and information literacy among adolescents.

El sector de los hidrocarburos en las últimas décadas tomo una vital importancia en la economía boliviana en especial el gas natural, ya que constituyen una buena fuente de ingresos para el Estado. Por tal motivo, en este artículo se analiza si el incremento de las exportaciones de los volúmenes de gas natural y la inversión extranjera directa tuvieron un resultado positivo en el crecimiento económico de Bolivia. Asimismo, se determina cómo la nacionalización de los hidrocarburos en el año 2006 repercutió de manera positiva o no en la economía boliviana. Para esto, en primer término, se aplicaron pruebas de raíz unitarias luego pruebas de cointegración estadística y se estimaron vectores de corrección de errores para determinar la existencia de una relación de largo plazo y la posible causalidad entre las variables. De esta forma, las estimaciones muestran una relación de largo plazo entre el PIB, la IED, la exportación de gas natural y el precio de venta de gas natural, sin embargo, no existen efectos a corto plazo. Particularmente, las exportaciones de gas natural y la IED no muestran causalidad sobre el PIB. Por último, se muestra que la nacionalización ocasionó un cambio estructural negativo en el crecimiento económico de Bolivia.

In the Spanish electricity market, after the daily market is held in which prices are set for the next day, the secondary and tertiary markets take place, which allow companies more accurate adjustment of the electricity they are able to offer. The objective of this paper is to predict the final price reached in these markets by predicting the supply curve in advance, which is the aggregate of what companies offer. First, we study a procedure to represent the supply curves, and then we consider different machine learning approaches to obtain the day-ahead supply curves for the secondary market. Finally, the predictions of the supply curves are crossed with the system requirements to obtain the expected price predictions. Histogram-Based Gradient Boosting is the best performing algorithm for predicting supply curves. The most relevant variables for the prediction are the lagged values, the daily market price, the price of gas and values of the wind recorded in the Spanish provinces.

To address inborn errors of immunity (IEI) which were underdiagnosed in resource-limited regions, our centre developed and offered free genetic testing for the most common IEI by Sanger sequencing (SS) since 2001. With the establishment of The Asian Primary Immunodeficiency (APID) Network in 2009, the awareness and definitive diagnosis of IEI were further improved with collaboration among centres caring for IEI patients from East and Southeast Asia. We also started to use whole exome sequencing (WES) for undiagnosed cases and further extended our collaboration with centres from South Asia and Africa. With the increased use of Next Generation Sequencing (NGS), we have shifted our diagnostic practice from SS to WES. However, SS was still one of the key diagnostic tools for IEI for the past two decades. Our centre has performed 2,024 IEI SS genetic tests, with in-house protocol designed specifically for 84 genes, in 1,376 patients with 744 identified to have disease-causing mutations (54.1%). The high diagnostic rate after just one round of targeted gene SS for each of the 5 common IEI (X-linked agammaglobulinemia (XLA) 77.4%, Wiskott–Aldrich syndrome (WAS) 69.2%, X-linked chronic granulomatous disease (XCGD) 59.5%, X-linked severe combined immunodeficiency (XSCID) 51.1%, and X-linked hyper-IgM syndrome (HIGM1) 58.1%) demonstrated targeted gene SS should remain the first-tier genetic test for the 5 common X-linked IEI.

Ampros, Anfas, Aspanias, Atades, Gautena, Gorabide y Plena inclusión presentan una investigación cuyo objetivo es evaluar el impacto del plan individualizado en el que se incluyen los objetivos personales, la calidad de vida y la percepción de las personas. Se establecen puntos de referencia en un análisis longitudinal de los resultados. Con carácter previo a la elaboración del plan individual de cada persona, se han evaluado las necesidades de apoyo y la calidad de vida. En total, han participado 77 personas con discapacidad con diferentes necesidades de apoyo. Los objetivos de cada plan individual se han valorado al finalizar el primer año y al acabar el segundo, momento en el cual se volvieron a aplicar las escalas antes citadas. Se observan diferencias significativas en los resultados obtenidos en función de las necesidades de apoyo y la valoración que realizan los profesionales según los años de contacto con la persona con discapacidad. Se deben tener en cuenta las diferencias por la edad de los participantes, los problemas de comportamiento y la consecución de los objetivos individuales.

Objective: To describe the clinical characteristics of children and adolescents admitted to intensive care with confirmed COVID-19. Method: Prospective, multicenter, observational study, in 19 pediatric intensive care units. Patients aged 1 month to 19 years admitted consecutively (March–May 2020) were included. Demographic, clinical-epidemiological features, treatment, and outcomes were collected. Subgroups were compared according to comorbidities, age < 1 year, and need for invasive mechanical ventilation. A multivariable logistic regression model was used for predictors of severity. Results: Seventy-nine patients were included (ten with multisystemic inflammatory syndrome). Median age 4 years; 54% male (multisystemic inflammatory syndrome, 80%); 41% had comorbidities (multisystemic inflammatory syndrome, 20%). Fever (76%), cough (51%), and tachypnea (50%) were common in both groups. Severe symptoms, gastrointestinal symptoms, and higher inflammatory markers were more frequent in multisystemic inflammatory syndrome. Interstitial lung infiltrates were common in both groups, but pleural effusion was more prevalent in the multisystemic inflammatory syndrome group (43% vs. 14%). Invasive mechanical ventilation was used in 18% (median 7.5 days); antibiotics, oseltamivir, and corticosteroids were used in 76%, 43%, and 23%, respectively, but not hydroxychloroquine. The median pediatric intensive care unit length-of-stay was five days; there were two deaths (3%) in the non- multisystemic inflammatory syndrome group. Patients with comorbidities were older and comorbidities were independently associated with the need for invasive mechanical ventilation (OR 5.5; 95% CI, 1.43–21.12; p = 0.01). Conclusions: In Brazilian pediatric intensive care units, COVID-19 had low mortality, age less than 1 year was not associated with a worse prognosis, and patients with multisystemic inflammatory syndrome had more severe symptoms, higher inflammatory biomarkers, and a greater predominance of males, but only comorbidities and chronic diseases were independent predictors of severity. Background: Asthma affects one in every 12 children in United States with significant prevalence in underserved groups. Family caregiver education is essential to improve childhood asthma control. The literature suggests that family caregivers' lack of knowledge about asthma management affects their children's health outcomes. An evidence-based education program that improves caregivers' asthma knowledge may improve the family's well-being. Objectives: The goal of the Asthma Academy project is to improve the disease management of children with asthma by providing an in-person family caregiver education program. The main objectives are to (a) improve family caregivers' asthma knowledge, (b) enhance their confidence in asthma management, and (c) evaluate caregivers' satisfaction with the education program. Method: This quality improvement project used an in-person educational program with an asthma education video resource for caregivers of children with asthma. Results: The family caregivers' asthma knowledge improved significantly after the education. The confidence levels in caring for children with asthma increased. Caregivers' satisfaction with the Asthma Academy education session was favorable. Conclusions: The Asthma Academy was an acceptable and effective delivery method of education for family caregivers of children with asthma in the in-patient setting. Empowering family caregivers of vulnerable children through asthma education may improve child health outcomes and mitigate complications from asthma. Implications for Nursing Nurses and clinicians are steward of providing patient education. Individualized, patient-tailored education is recommended. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

En este trabajo se presenta una propuesta de divulgación científica realizada a través de un stand durante un lustro y en el marco de la Semana de la Ciencia, la Tecnología y la Innovación de la Universidad del País Vasco UPV/EHU. Una experiencia que ha tenido como fin mostrar a una sociedad diversa una parte de la ciencia geográfica y los fundamentos tecnológicos y paramétricos de los que necesita. Para ello se han diseñado diferentes actividades de carácter complementario cuyo desarrollo metodológico y resultados se exponen a continuación.

This work presents the proposal of scientific dissemination carried out through a stand during a five-year period within the framework of the Science, Technology and Innovation Week of the University of the Basque Country UPV / EHU. An experience that has had to show to a diverse society a part of the geographical science and the technological and parametric basis of which it needs. To this end, different complementary activities have been designed whose methodological development and results are described below.

Lungworms in the genus Angiostrongylus cause disease in animals and humans. The spread of Angiostrongylus vasorum within Europe and the recent establishment of Angiostrongylus cantonensis increase the relevance of these species to veterinary and medical practitioners, and to researchers in parasitology, epidemiology, veterinary science and ecology. This review introduces the key members of the genus present in Europe and their impacts on health, and updates the current epidemiological situation. Expansion of A. vasorum from localized pockets to wide distribution across the continent has been confirmed by a rising prevalence in foxes and increasing reports of infection and disease in dogs, while the list of carnivore and mustelid definitive hosts continues to grow. The tropically distributed rat lungworm A. cantonensis, meanwhile, has been recorded on islands south of Europe, previously the Canary Islands, and now also the Balearic Islands, although so far with limited evidence of zoonotic disease. Other members of the genus, namely, A. chabaudi, A. daskalovi and A. dujardini, are native to Europe and mainly infect wildlife, with unknown consequences for populations, although spill-over can occur into domestic animals and those in zoological collections. The epidemiology of angiostrongylosis is complex, and further research is needed on parasite maintenance in sylvatic hosts, and on the roles of ecology, behaviour and genetics in disease emergence. Improved surveillance in animals and humans is also required to support risk assessments and management.
