Summary: Accurate predictions of spring plant phenology with climate change are critical for projections of growing seasons, plant communities and a number of ecosystem services, including carbon storage. Progress towards prediction, however, has been slow because the major cues known to drive phenology – temperature (including winter chilling and spring forcing) and photoperiod – generally covary in nature and may interact, making accurate predictions of plant responses to climate change complex and nonlinear. Alternatively, recent work suggests many species may be dominated by one cue, which would make predictions much simpler. Here, we manipulated all three cues across 28 woody species from two North American forests. All species responded to all cues examined. Chilling exerted a strong effect, especially on budburst (−15.8 d), with responses to forcing and photoperiod greatest for leafout (−19.1 and −11.2 d, respectively). Interactions between chilling and forcing suggest that each cue may compensate somewhat for the other. Cues varied across species, leading to staggered leafout within each community and supporting the idea that phenology is a critical aspect of species' temporal niches. Net primary production (NPP) is a fundamental property of natural ecosystems. Temporal variation of NPP not only reflects how communities respond to environmental fluctuations, but it also has important implications for regional carbon assessment. Unfortunately, studies based on field measurements to directly address this issue in the extreme environment of alpine grasslands are rare. In this study, we measured aboveground NPP (ANPP) and species richness in 40 sites across the Tibetan alpine grasslands from 2006 to 2009 to investigate the regional pattern of temporal variation in ANPP and to quantify the effects of climate fluctuation and biodiversity on this variation. The results showed that, during the four-year period, the average ANPP varied 1.5-fold, from 83.9 to 125.7 gm-2, with a mean coefficient of variation of temporal variation of 36.6% across the 40 sites. Due to the regionally similar climatic fluctuations caused by South Asian monsoons, aboveground NPP exhibited synchronous temporal variation and consistent spatial patterns over the four-year period. Moreover, rainfall fluctuation had a more profound effect on the ANPP dynamics than temperature variation, which suggests that production in the Tibetan alpine grasslands is primarily driven by precipitation. Therefore, the Tibetan alpine grasslands are mainly constrained by water availability. Finally, we found that species richness negatively correlates with variation in aboveground NPP, which might provide evidence that diversity can stabilize community production in high-altitude grasslands. 1. Plants can provision seeds by optimizing seed size, number and nutrient content to maximize parental fitness. According to the McGinley–Charnov hypothesis, seed size should be determined by the ratio of carbon to nitrogen (C/N) available to the plant, with larger seed size correlating with larger C/N ratios and smaller absolute N content. 2. This hypothesis was tested by establishing monocultures of Phytolacca americana L. (Phytolaccaceae) at three population densities under ambient and elevated CO2 environments, with two availabilities of soil N. 3. Elevated CO2 reduced both seed size and N concentration while increasing the C/N ratio; high soil N availability produced the opposite result for N concentration and C/N ratio. Higher planting densities reduced plant biomass, but did not alter seed size. 4. In accordance with the McGinley–Charnov hypothesis, larger seeds had both larger C/N ratios and smaller N content. However, the increase in C/N ratio caused by elevated CO2 corresponded with smaller seeds overall: elevated CO2 reduced seed size, although the seed size–C/N relationship remained positive. 5. These results suggest an alternative mechanism to explain variation in seed size, and suggest that future climate conditions may alter seed quality and plant reproductive behaviour.
