International Students (IS) generate significant revenue in Australia, bringing diversity, but also distinctive needs and values. IS experience unique mental health challenges and their unmet support needs have recently received public and academic attention, notably during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, framing IS as homogeneous misses important variations within this population. A nuanced understanding of diverse IS subgroups with regard to mental health and help seeking is missing from current research. This study therefore explores the experiences of Queer1 International Students (QIS) in Victoria2, and the barriers and facilitators that influence how they seek and gain mental health support. Results show that the persistent impacts of broader socio-cultural factors and systemic gaps in addressing QIS' intersectional needs act as barriers to accessing support, while awareness of intersectionality is critical in providing appropriate professional assistance to QIS. Findings suggest the need to build cultural competence and service collaborations to better support IS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
This qualitative study reviewed student application of self-regulated learning (SRL) processes in self-paced graduate business communication courses. It was preceded by a quantitative analysis of the same courses. In both studies, researchers sought to understand student experience in a self-paced learning environment, and how this experience demonstrated SRL and increased student performance. Neither study established a clear connection between a self-paced learning environment, SRL, and student performance. However, both studies confirmed the importance of student predisposition for the cyclical phases of preparation, performance, and appraisal and highlighted the critical role of support in readying students for learning strategy changes.

With increasing numbers of international students entering Australian social work programs, research has focused on the challenges of teaching these students due to perceived cultural differences and language comprehension. However, limited research has examined their experiences when transitioning to practice. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 15 international MSW graduates originating from 10 countries and residing across three Australian states. Participants' transition to practice involved similar challenges to those described in research for the broader cohort of newly qualified social workers. However, for the current cohort, initial concerns are equally focused on "fitting in", due to a learned perspective that their cultural and linguistic difference would inhibit practice. Drawing on ecological systems theory, belonging was influenced by contextual factors relating to levels of cultural diversity within workplaces; co-worker support; and participants' sense of preparedness from their education. For all participants, these feelings of difference lessened over time, with some later reflecting that their cultural difference and lived experience was beneficial to their practice. Findings suggest that the strengths of these diverse students could be more readily recognised during education and the field, for improving preparedness for practice, and inclusivity in Australian social work. Problematising international social work students and focusing on their perceived deficits can erode graduates' confidence when first transitioning to the field. The need for cross-cultural learning opportunities for educators, students, and field education agencies is highlighted for recognising the benefits of diversity and for improved preparation of early career social workers for the current professional field. Advances in training and education are needed in organisations where more culturally diverse graduates are securing employment, to ensure that international graduates are supported in early practice, and that diversity is valued in workplaces. Little is known about what academics focus on when providing assessment feedback to international students for whom English is an additional language (EAL). This study examines written assessment feedback provided to 11 EAL-speaking international students throughout a two-year Master of Social Work programme and investigates their perspectives of this. Content analysis of written feedback revealed considerable variations in the volume, format and focus of feedback; this was also reflected in data provided by participants in interviews. Feedback was mainly content-focused, with a low chance of wider transferability, while language and academic skills had a limited focus. Participants' attitude toward feedback and their reported engagement with it is in alignment with the process view of feedback. This study concludes with suggestions to further facilitate student engagement with feedback and improve consistency across the Social Work programme. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mots clés: itinérance; jeunesse; prévention Several political measures were recently adopted in Quebec to address the issue of homelessness. The introduction of regional action plans, municipal notices and a national policy signals the emergence of a political will to end homelessness in Quebec. However, while the new measures include prevention strategies to combat homelessness, there has been little effort devoted to concrete actions, especially for youth experiencing or at risk of homelessness. This article paves the way for a new perspective on youth homelessness, drawing inspiration from the prevention shift put forward by the Canadian Observatory on Homelessness. Our goal, as engaged and committed researchers in the field of homelessness, is to provoke a reflection which we hope will accommodate the emergence of a paradigm shift based on prevention instead of relying on emergency responses. This shift in the fight against this phenomenon among young Quebecers is based on an intersectoral and intersectional model in order to build, with various stakeholders, a global, coherent and concerted vision of the prevention of youth homelessness in Quebec. - Abstract
In Victoria, data indicates that in 2013-2014 there were 74,992 adult male arrests, yet little formal attention has been paid to the parenting status of these men, despite knowledge of the impact of parental arrest and incarceration on children being well established. This article addresses a gap in the literature by providing new insights into the experiences of arrest of 34 primary carer fathers incarcerated in Victoria. It examines how incarcerated primary carer fathers experience planning processes for their children at the time of arrest and what factors facilitate or hinder the planning process. To do so, the article draws on data gathered for an Australian Research Council funded study conducted in Victoria and New South Wales between 2011 and 2015. Key issues include: the primary location of paternal arrest; the presence, or absence, of children at the location at which the arrest is made; police awareness of children; and subsequent discussions between police and fathers about suitable care. Findings indicate that half of all arrests took place in the family home. Children were present in 10 of these arrests and half were characterised by force, a large number of police, or weapons. Findings also indicate that in around one-half of all arrests, children were not physically present, despite fathers continuing to have responsibilities for these children. Despite 27 of the arrested men reporting that the police were aware (or made aware) of their children, almost all of these men (n = 26) were not asked about suitable care even when their children were physically present. Overall qualitative findings depict an absence of any discussion about children between police and fathers during the arrest process. The study highlights the demand for guidelines regarding child sensitive practice when a primary carer father is arrested.

Young women in Australia experience serious risks from intimate partner violence (IPV) as a form of family violence. However, there has been a lack of attention to the impact of this on young women and, as a result, these risks are not well understood. This article critically examines existing literature, policy and research and in doing so, specifically explores the ways in which young women aged between 10 and 20 years old are represented and positioned in contemporary family violence discourses. Framed by a review of socio-political and cultural history, the paper highlights the early colonial, patriarchal foundations of Australia, which have specific implications for the challenges that contemporary young women experience in situations of IPV. With a particular emphasis on the Australian context, this article employs both an intersectional and critical feminist lens, with a key focus on the dimensions of adolescent development and youth social geographies. Focusing specifically on these dimensions, including development, gender and age, highlights the important role that feminist social work perspectives and practices can contribute to uncovering, understanding and responding to young women's experiences of intimate partner violence through policy and advocacy. International student numbers entering Australian social work programs have consistently grown in recent years, and subsequent discourse has problematized their educational experiences. However, no known research has described this cohort after graduating or explored their post-study outcomes. An anonymous online survey was conducted with 49 recent Master of Social Work graduates from 16 Australian universities, coming from 15 countries. The study findings suggest that migration to Australia was a key motivator for respondents when enrolling in social work study, with most remaining in the country after graduating. Securing professional employment was challenging for most due to having a temporary visa status; self-reported language barriers; competition with local graduates; and unfamiliarity with the local context. Initial post-study pathways were shown to be distinctly challenging for this cohort, due both to an individual sense of difference and to systemic barriers connected to migration policy and locally held biases. Despite this, many graduates persisted in their pursuance of a social work career. Further in-depth examination of the transition from international student to practitioner is required to understand the post-study experiences for this graduate cohort. Such information can also contribute to more inclusive settings in social work education where international students' capacities are more widely recognized. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Bruton's tyrosine kinase (BTK) inhibitors, such as ibrutinib, acalabrutinib, and zanubrutinib, are commonly used to treat chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), Waldenström macroglobulinemia, and mantle cell lymphoma. These inhibitors can cause cutaneous adverse events, including ecchymoses, skin infections, and hair and nail changes. Edema, or swelling, has been reported in 5-29% of patients treated with BTK inhibitors, but it has not been well classified. This article presents two cases of persistent upper extremity edema in patients on BTK inhibitor therapy and discusses the possible mechanisms and management of this side effect. This book explores practical examples of co-production in criminal justice research and practice. Through a series of seven case studies, the authors examine what people do when they co-produce knowledge in criminal justice contexts: in prisons and youth detention; with criminalised women; from practitioners’ perspectives; and with First Nations communities. Co-production holds a promise: that people whose lives are entangled in the criminal justice system can be valued as participants and partners, helping to shape how the system works. But how realistic is it to imagine criminal justice ‘service users’ participating, partnering, and sharing genuine decision-making power with those explicitly holding power over them? Taking a sophisticated yet accessible theoretical approach, the authors consider issues of power, hierarchy and different ways of knowing to understand the perils and possibilities of co-production under the shadow of ‘justice’. In exploring these complexities, the book brings cautious optimism to co-production partners and project leaders. This book provides a foundational text for scholars and practitioners seeking to apply co-production principles in their research and practice. With stories from Australia, the UK and Ireland, the text will appeal to the international community. - Abstract
Background: Non-attendance and inappropriate referrals affect the effective and efficient running of healthcare services. Non-engagement with speech and language therapy (SLT) services may lead to negative long-term consequences for children in need of SLT intervention. Currently there is a dearth of research on non-attendance and non-engagement with SLT services. Aims: To identify factors associated with (1) non-attendance and (2) parents' non-engagement with SLT services. Methods & Procedures: Demographic data were collected from 140 case files of children (aged 5;0-17;11 years) discharged from a public community SLT service (November 2011-October 2013) with no intervention provided. Logistic regression analyses explored relationships between demographic data and (1) non-attendance and (2) non-engagement with the SLT service. Outcomes & Results: There was an increased probability of non-attendance during winter (i.e. September-February inclusive; OR = 3.14; p = 0.028) relative to summer, and with each month a child waited for SLT assessment (OR = 1.19; p = 0.066). There was decreased probability of non-attendance with children referred for speech (OR = 0.08; p = 0.011) or language difficulties (OR = 0.15; p = 0.050) relative to dysfluency. The probability of non-engagement with the SLT service increased in each of the following conditions: with each month a child waited for assessment (OR = 1.27; p = 0.004); in urban (OR = 2.40; p = 0.066) relative to rural locations; during winter (OR = 2.65; p = 0.021) relative to summer; and with referrals made by occupational therapists, physiotherapists, psychologists and social workers (OR = 18.65; p = 0.016) relative to doctor referrals. Conclusions & Implications: Non-attendance is influenced by wait times, season and the reason for referral. Location (urban versus rural), referral source, wait times and season are factors related to non-engagement with SLT services. Targeted policies to improve efficiency and effectiveness of SLT services could be designed around these study findings.

It is generally understood that visits to see incarcerated family members are good for children, families and those in prison. Much research has focused on the impact of prison visits on children and incarcerated mothers, 'parents' as a generic group or barriers to contact, while less attention has been paid to the effect of prison visits on incarcerated fathers. When COVID-19 spread across the globe in early 2020, prisons restricted in-person visits. In Australia, alternative forms of communication between prisoners and their families were utilised, including phone calls and video visits. Drawing on data from an online survey of caregivers of children with a family member in prison (n = 84), this paper specifically focuses on a sub-sample, reporting on imprisoned fathers (n = 70), describing and evaluating experiences with video visits. Most respondents reported that the father was not coping well with the lack of face-to-face contact, and almost two-thirds of respondents reported problems with keeping in contact after in-person visits were suspended. However, a small cohort of fathers were found to be coping well. These findings are explored, highlighting barriers to technologyfacilitated visits, and point to a range of issues that need to be addressed for such visits to be beneficial. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In Argentina, the primary modes of contact between parents in prison and their children are contact visits and telephone calls. Prior to the pandemic, access to mobile telephones was limited and there were established barriers to contact visits, including distance and cost. Maintaining contact during the pandemic via either of these modes was made even more difficult. However, advocacy and multi-agency collaboration facilitated greater access to telephones and the development of support resources for parents in prison and their families in the community. This contemporary comment first provides context about imprisonment in Argentina, then highlights what is known about parents in prison in Argentina, subsequently focusing in on how family contact was negatively impacted by COVID-19. Next, the strategies deployed to reconnect families separated by imprisonment via regular contact are described. The remaining knowledge and evidence gaps, role of multi-agency collaborations and community advocacy are highlighted throughout the commentary. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Despite historical and current connections between the Catholic Church and social work in the Philippines, studies investigating these connections have been limited. Using an exploratory research design, this study examined this relationship by drawing on existing documents: legislation; curricula and minimum standards for social work programmes; course syllabi; the Code of Ethics; and textbooks. Three themes emerged in the analysis, offering tentative explanations for the Church's widespread influence: religion as embedded in Filipino life; the Catholic Church and Catholic-based organisations as key partners in the delivery of social services; and the intersection of Catholic teachings, social work principles and Filipino values. YOUNG adults ,RESIDENTIAL care ,KINSHIP care - Abstract
Young people living in residential out-of-home care (OOHC) comprise a small proportion of the total Australian OOHC population, but are known to be a particularly vulnerable group. Those transitioning from residential care at 18 years or younger seem to have poorer outcomes than those leaving foster care and kinship care. The recent introduction of forms of extended care until 21 years in most Australian jurisdictions has highlighted the need for additional assistance for all care leavers, yet paradoxically residential care leavers currently receive the least ongoing support. This critical commentary draws on recent relevant research findings and policy developments with regard to extended care locally and internationally. It presents the case for the concept of extended care to be adopted, via a nationally consistent model of extended care support for all residential care leavers incorporating formal housing and other support programs. CONCERT halls ,DESIGN museums ,OPERA - Abstract
'Music is mass and it builds things', esperanza spalding said she dreamt one night as she struggled with the libretto for ...(Iphigenia), the phrase forming the turning point for the work. The oneiric formulation extends the material nature of music, granting sonic vibrations architectural abilities. This paradox approaches a paradoxical aim at the heart of Frank Gehry's building practice: to imbue solid matter with motion. His free-form sculptural designs, instanced most famously in the spectacular designs for the Guggenheim Museum at Bilbao and the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, have granted him global auteur status. However, the set design for ...(Iphigenia) offered and continues to offer him an attractive state of unknowing, one in which emerges the possibility of non-directed constructive form. WHITE nationalism ,SUFFERING ,YOUNG women ,MYTH ,THRUST - Abstract
Speaking by phone to a critic several weeks before the premiere of ...(Iphigenia) , director Lileana Blain-Cruz announced: 'esperanza challenges the absurdity of this myth... Men must kill a young woman so they can go to war. Why repeat what does not work? What does it feel like to be a young woman thrust into this absurd story?' In fact, the Wayne Shorter-esperanza spalding production exaggerates the myth's absurdity, minimizing the pain of Agamemnon and flattening the familial calamity at the heart of Euripides' play until it becomes a conflict between aggressive men and suffering women. It is easy to judge these toxic male warriors with their Wagnerian helmets and hints of white nationalism. It is also easy for the female members of the audience to identify with Iphigenia, and with the series of Iphigenias whom the warriors put to death. Yet, at our moment, Shorter and spalding's reimagining of a myth about the sacrifice of a virgin to power a fleet invites us to consider our own implication in an urgent calamity, one in which we are both warrior and virgin. BRUTON tyrosine kinase ,CANCER cells - Abstract
Summary: Waldenström macroglobulinaemia (WM) is characterized by the presence of a MYD88L265P mutation. This mutation promotes growth and survival of malignant cells through Bruton tyrosine kinase (BTK) activation. Ibrutinib was the first BTK inhibitor approved for WM. Intolerance to ibrutinib frequently leads to dose reductions, though the impact of reducing ibrutinib dosing has not been systematically studied. We performed a retrospective study to determine the frequency and impact of reducing ibrutinib dosing in WM patients. With a median treatment time of 64 months, 96 (27%) of 353 WM patients required a dose reduction due to adverse events such as musculoskeletal symptoms, cardiac events, dermatologic symptoms, cytopenias, and gastrointestinal symptoms. The median time to initial dose reduction was 9.3 months (range, 0.5–74). Dose reductions were more common in those 65 years of age or older versus under 65 [hazard ratio (HR) 2.46, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.55–3.90; p < 0.001], and in females versus males (HR 2.20, 95% CI 1.41–3.28, p < 0.001). Most patients (65%) had improvement or resolution of adverse effects after initial dose reduction. With a median follow‐up of three years from dose reduction, hematologic response sustained or deepened in 79% of patients. These data suggest that dose reduction of ibrutinib is a reasonable treatment approach for patients with intolerable side effects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
