Most people learn and internalize their sense of ethical behavior many years before they assume positions of organizational responsibility. Continued training in ethics helps to develop new understanding and supports ethical behavior. It is also useful to increase the cognitive skills of executives making decisions affecting firms and stakeholders. One key to ethical executive decision making is the further development of critical thinking skills. This article looks at the relationship between critical thinking, organizational uncertainty, and ethical behavior. It also describes an instructional design using a series of business vignettes for executive action with uncertain functional and ethical outcomes. Project management provides a natural home for organizational learning, freeing it from mechanical processes. Organizational learning plays a critical role in intelligent project management, which combines manageability, performance outcomes of knowledge management, and innovation. A tower-building exercise originally intended to illustrate how to direct subordinates was redesigned to reflect contemporary organizational structures. It helps participants examine the issue of who really leads in nonhierarchical, self-managed teams. (JOW)

Objective: Breast cancer is the most common cancer for women, globally. Women are more likely to present with more advanced cancer and palliative care needs in low‐resource contexts. There is limited research on Arab, Muslim and African women's experiences of advanced breast cancer. The aim of this study was to explore and understand the experiences of advanced breast cancer in the Islamic Republic of Mauritania. Methods: Using a constructivist Stakian multi‐case study approach, eight cases were constructed with women with advanced breast cancer (n = 8), family members (n = 10) and health professionals (n = 9). Data were collected longitudinally (up to nine months per case) and included semi‐structured interviews and audio‐journals. Data from 58 interviews and 31 journal entries were thematically analysed. Results: Three key themes were identified: 1. Destiny: Maure women appreciate that Allah is all powerful and maintains control over their destinies and their breast cancer. 2. Patience & Acceptance: a fear of causing offence to Allah influences how women express their experiences of breast cancer and its treatments. 3. Journeying in search of a cure: Maure women have limitled access to information around their cancer and its treatments. Women use their own observations and interpretations to understand their breast cancer and guide their pursuit of treatment and a cure. Conclusion: Maure women feel reassured that life and cure remain possible because of Allah's sustenance; but are aware that the gift of life is fragile. Case study research facilitates the in-depth, real-life exploration of complex phenomena from multiple perspectives. It is a well-established approach to deal with the complexities involved in palliative care research. Case studies are not aligned to a single epistemological paradigm but are defined by the identification of the case to be studied. This article examines the methodological issues of carrying out constructivist Stakian multi-case study research. It is based on the lessons learned from our case study exploring the experiences of advanced breast cancer in Mauritania, a resource-limited, Muslim majority context. Stake provides suggestions and boundaries for the case study researcher, but there is no blueprint available for a Stakian multi-case study. The researcher is encouraged to employ their creativity, intuition and ingenuity. We exercised this freedom by incorporating mixed methods of data collection within our constructivist paradigm. We resourcefully revisited the identity of the case and embedded mini-cases, we rejected traditional views of triangulation in favor of crystallization, and we employed assorted approaches to guide and enrich our within- and cross-case analyses to formulate overarching themes and multi-case assertions. Stakian case study should not be limited to constructivist researchers. We encourage any case study researchers to consider this approach, especially those who wish to employ their intuition and ingenuity to understand and describe experiences and phenomena. The need for palliative care is increasing, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Higher education institutions (HEIs) have a role to play in developing a skilled palliative care workforce in LMICs. A workshop was held to discuss this issue, and it was attended by experts from around the world. The workshop highlighted the challenges and opportunities for palliative care education in HEIs for LMIC settings. The participants discussed the importance of a collaborative interprofessional approach and advocacy for the inclusion of palliative care into a wide range of curricula. They also expressed the hope to explore possibilities of networks to continue this discussion and incorporate the wider perspectives from primary care and humanitarian practitioners. Background: Palliative care has been successfully integrated into many Muslim-majority countries, most frequently in urbanised areas with developed health care systems. Less is known as to how the concept of palliative care is perceived by Muslim populations and health workers in rural, resource-limited contexts. Aim: This study seeks to explore whether the principles of palliative care are congruent with the perspectives of health professionals, families and communities in rural areas of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, in West Africa. Design: A qualitative research design was employed underpinned by a constructionist paradigm. Data were collected through 31 interviews and 8 focus groups. Data were analysed using thematic analysis. Setting/participants: A total of 76 participants were recruited from across rural Mauritania; 33 health care professionals, 12 recently bereaved family members and 31 community leaders. Data collection occurred during training events in the capital and visits to villages and rural health posts. Results: Three major themes were identified. First, there is a perceived lack of congruency between an illness which limits life and the strong belief in destiny. The second theme describes the perceived barriers to communication of issues relating to palliative care. Finally, a good death is described, framed within the interplay of religious faith and cultural practices. Conclusion: The palliative care ethos is viewed positively by the majority of participants. The need to understand and respect a Muslim individual's faith does not diminish our obligation to personalise palliative care provided for them and their family. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) promotes evidence-based medicine throughout contemporary health care. Its guidelines are employed in the United Kingdom and elsewhere, influencing the type and quality of health care provided. NICE considers a range of evidence in the process of creating guidelines; however, the research accepted as evidence greatly relies on positivist methodologies. At times, it is unnecessarily restricted to quantitative methods of data collection. Using the Clinical Guideline 140, opioids in palliative care, as an example, it is demonstrated that the research accepted as evidence is unable to provide answers to complex problems. In addition, several inherent biases are discussed, such as age inequality and pharmaceutical company influence. In order to provide coherent and useful guidelines relevant to complex problems in a real world setting, NICE must move away from focusing on data from randomised controlled trials. Its epistemological foundation must be questioned, paving the way for alternative research paradigms to be considered as evidence and thereby enriching subsequent guidelines. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article promotes the understanding of how children experience chronic illness in Mauritania, West Africa. The analysis of interviews with 31 children highlights the impact of health care on children. Children construct their own unique interpretations of their illness, employing concepts from the biomedical and popular approaches to health. This research contributes to literature by expanding the understanding of how children minimise the symptom burden to maintain hope and reduce the social impact of their illness. As organizational behavior learners apply managerial knowledge in classroom exercises or in the field, the hidden knowledge they hold of the cultural context of these applications works spontaneously to create meaning. This contextual knowledge is developed profoundly in our formative years; thus tacit experiential knowledge differs by generation. Today's college-aged Millennials see organizational life and OB theory differently than yesterday's Gen X, or Baby Boomer cohorts. These differences are revealed in an exercise using the vintage (1982) and current editions of the board game Trivial Pursuit. This activity asks learners to find the presence of generationally-cultivated knowledge in their daily lives and consider its effect on their use of OB theory.
