Background: Work-related low back pain (LBP) is a common musculoskeletal disorder related to work and contributes to decreased employee health and productivity. Physical therapists (PTs) are more susceptible to developing LBP than other healthcare employees. Although LBP might contribute to decreased quality of life (QoL) among PTs, factors underpinning correlations between work-related musculoskeletal disorders and QoL among PTs are not substantiated. This study aimed to investigate correlations between work-related LBP and QoL among PTs. Methods: This cross-sectional study used an online survey completed by PTs. The survey form was based on a previously published questionnaire for assessing the experience of work-related LBP and the 36-Item Short Form Health Survey for evaluating QoL. The dependent variable was QoL; the independent variables were LBP rating, how LBP impacted the work of the PTs, weekly hours of direct patient contact, experience as a PT, and income. Results: A total of 690 PTs, consisting of males (375) and females (315), completed the survey form. Correlation analysis revealed significant correlations between QoL and the following variables: income (r=0.42, p < 0.01), LBP impact on participant's job performance (r=0.41, p < 0.01), experience as a PT (r=0.17, p < 0.01), weekly hours of direct patient contact (r=0.11, p < 0.01), rating of LBP (r=-0.64, p < 0.01) and area of PT specialty (r=-0.15, p < 0.01). Conclusions: The study showed correlations related to multiple factors between QoL and work-related LBP among PTs. Further investigation is needed to obtain more knowledge about these correlations.

During the 1920s and 1930s, Fay M. Jackson broke traditional barriers by serving as the first African American foreign correspondent for the Associated Negro Press (ANP). Jackson was the only African American female reporter of the ANP who covered the coronation of King George VI in 1937 and used the opportunity to report on the sociopolitical affairs of Blacks in Europe while specifically underscoring the Italo-Ethiopian conflict. While in Europe, Jackson set out to meet with various political figures and activists of color to emphasize the parallel treatment between Blacks in the U.S and other communities of color outside the U.S. Little research has been done on the role of African American female journalists in American history. Therefore, Jackson's importance is further accentuated by the fact that she was one of few women who forged a way into the Black press. Abstract In modern era, deficiency of Vitamin D3 is predominantly due to limited exposure to sunlight and UV radiation resulting from indoor lifestyles. Several studies have revealed that vitamin D deficiency can lead to chronic vascular inflammation, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, congestive left ventricular hypertrophy, and heart failure. This study introduces a green synthesis of novel bimetallic nanoporous composite, CuO/Ag using lemon extract. The synthesized nanoporous material, CuO/Ag@lemon extract was characterized using several analytical techniques, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). The CuO/Ag@lemon extract nanoparticles were immobilized on glassy carbon electrode (GCE) to prepare modified CuO/Ag@lemon extract–GCE interface. The electrocatalytic and electrochemical properties investigation was carried out on the modified electrode. using cyclic voltammetry (CV), differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), and amperometry for detecting of Vitamin D3. The DPV method displayed a linear response range of 0.02–22.5 µM with a detection limit of 2.62 nM, while the amperometric method showed a broader linear range of 0.25–23.25 µM with a detection limit of 2.70 nM with 82% modified electrode stability. The designed electrode exhibited a positive response to the inclusion of Vitamin D3 with electro-oxidation, reaching steady-state within 3.4 s, with 87% reproducibility within a day. The proposed method offers a rapid and sensitive platform for detection of Vitamin D3 with minimal interference from other molecules. The early diagnosis of Vitamin D3 deficiency using modified electrodes allows for early treatment, thereby preventing severe health complications.

Cell models of cardiac ischemia-reperfusion (IR) injury are essential to facilitate understanding, but current monolayer cell models poorly replicate the in vivo IR injury that occurs within a three-dimensional tissue. Here we show that this is for two reasons: the residual oxygen present in many cellular hypoxia models sustains mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation; and the loss of lactate from cells into the incubation medium during ischemia enables cells to sustain glycolysis. To overcome these limitations, we incubated isolated adult mouse cardiomyocytes anoxically while inhibiting lactate efflux. These interventions recapitulated key markers of in vivo ischemia, notably the accumulation of succinate and the loss of adenine nucleotides. Upon reoxygenation after anoxia the succinate that had accumulated during anoxia was rapidly oxidized in association with extensive mitochondrial superoxide/hydrogen peroxide production and cell injury, mimicking reperfusion injury. This cell model will enable key aspects of cardiac IR injury to be assessed in vitro.

Abstract The decision of the UK to leave the EU has far‐reaching, and often shared, implications for agriculture and fisheries. To ensure the future sustainability of the UK’s agricultural and fisheries systems, we argue that it is essential to grasp the opportunity that Brexit is providing to develop integrated policies that improve the management and protection of the natural environments, upon which these industries rely. This article advances a stakeholder informed vision of the future design of UK agriculture and fisheries policies. We assess how currently emerging UK policy will need to be adapted in order to implement this vision. Our starting point is that Brexit provides the opportunity to redesign current unsustainable practices and can, in principle, deliver a sustainable future for agriculture and fisheries. Underpinning policies with an ecosystem approach, explicit inclusion of public goods provision and social welfare equity were found to be key provisions for environmental, agricultural and fishery sustainability. Recognition of the needs of, and innovative practices in, the devolved UK nations is also required as the new policy and regulatory landscape is established. Achieving the proposed vision will necessitate drawing on best practice and creating more coherent and integrated food, environment and rural and coastal economic policies. Our findings demonstrate that “bottom‐up” and co‐production approaches will be key to the development of more environmentally sustainable agriculture and fisheries policies to underpin prosperous livelihoods. However, delivering this vision will involve overcoming significant challenges. The current uncertainty over the nature and timing of the UK’s Brexit agreement hinders forward planning and investment while diverting attention away from further in‐depth consideration of environmental sustainability. In the face of this uncertainty, much of the UK’s new policy on the environment, agriculture and fisheries is therefore ambitious in vision but light on detail. Full commitment to co‐production of policy with devolved nations and stakeholders also appears to be lacking, but will be essential for effective policy development and implementation. This historical article analyses the work of an under-recognised black female journalist, Fay M. Jackson, who wrote as the Associated Negro Press Hollywood correspondent during the 1930s. Drawing from the literature on celebrity studies, the black press and black feminist thought, this study reveals how Hollywood’s first black female correspondent brought visibility and personhood to black celebrities while employing conventional journalistic strategies. The analysis highlights two primary themes that emerged in Jackson’s celebrity news coverage: Jackson’s employment of gossip news and biographical profiles to bring personhood to black female celebrities; and Jackson’s coverage of the ‘browning’ of Hollywood to highlight the importance of racial representation within the entertainment industry. This study addresses how a black feminist approach to analysing race and gender politics in black media and Hollywood extends previous understandings about the history of celebrity studies. Background: Increase in presentations of self-harm to primary care, a risk factor of suicide, has led to a growing interest in identifying at-risk populations. Aim: To examine whether osteoporosis or fractures are risk factors for self-harm, suicidal ideation, and suicide. Design and setting: This was a systematic review of observational studies in adults (>18 years) that had examined the role of osteoporosis and/or fractures in subsequent self-harm, suicidal ideation, and/or suicide. Method: Six databases were searched from inception to July 2019. Additional citation tracking of eligible studies was undertaken in November 2022. Screening, data extraction, and quality assessment of full-text articles were performed independently by at least two authors. Where possible, meta-analysis was run on comparable risk estimates. Results: Fifteen studies were included: two examined the outcome of self-harm, three suicidal ideation, and 10 suicide. In approximately half of studies on osteoporosis, the risk of suicidal ideation and suicide remained significant. However, pooling of adjusted odds ratios from three studies indicated no association between osteoporosis and suicide (1.14, 95% confidence interval = 0.88 to 1.49). Nine studies examined the risk of a mixture of fracture types across different outcomes, limiting comparisons. However, all studies examining vertebral fracture (n = 3) reported a significant adjusted negative association for self-harm and suicide. Conclusion: Patients with vertebral fractures, a risk potential factor for suicide, may benefit from clinical case finding for mood disorders with personalised primary care management. There is little knowledge of how policymakers manage governance networks ("metagovern") within climate policy and especially at non-executive levels of public management. One strategy to metagovern is through using intermediary actors such as funding bodies. However, as novel actors within climate governance, such "climate intermediaries" are under-researched. We address these gaps by exploring the metagovernance through an intermediary actor, namely the Norwegian "Klimasats" Fund. We find that the logic of funding bodies lends itself to "carrots" as opposed to "sticks", weakening the potential for transformation. Funding bodies can also increase existing differences in climate action between larger and smaller local authorities. However, funding bodies have a beneficial bi-directional functionality, incentivising local innovation whilst feeding lessons both up to and across government. Funding bodies also have the power to make local actors into intermediaries in their own right and can influence policy discourses. Thus, in assessing metagovernance at the non-executive level and using intermediary actors such as funding bodies, we reveal significant challenges, but also surprising opportunities, for the low-carbon transition. Aims Low wall shear stress (WSS) is acknowledged to play a role in plaque development through its influence on local endothelial function. Also, lipid-rich plaques (LRPs) are associated with endothelial dysfunction. However, little is known about the interplay between WSS and the presence of lipids with respect to plaque progression. Therefore, we aimed to study the differences in WSS-related plaque progression between LRPs, non-LRPs, or plaque-free regions in human coronary arteries. Methods and results In the present single-centre, prospective study, 40 patients who presented with an acute coronary syndrome successfully underwent near-infrared spectroscopy intravascular ultrasound (NIRS-IVUS) and optical coherence tomography (OCT) of at least one non-culprit vessel at baseline and completed a 1-year follow-up. WSS was computed applying computational fluid dynamics to a three-dimensional reconstruction of the coronary artery based on the fusion of the IVUS-segmented lumen with a CT-derived centreline, using invasive flow measurements as boundary conditions. For data analysis, each artery was divided into 1.5 mm/45° sectors. Plaque growth based on IVUS-derived percentage atheroma volume change was compared between LRPs, non-LRPs, and plaque-free wall segments, as assessed by both OCT and NIRS. Both NIRS- and OCT-detected lipid-rich sectors showed a significantly higher plaque progression than non-LRPs or plaque-free regions. Exposure to low WSS was associated with a higher plaque progression than exposure to mid or high WSS, even in the regions classified as a plaque-free wall. Furthermore, low WSS and the presence of lipids had a synergistic effect on plaque growth, resulting in the highest plaque progression in lipid-rich regions exposed to low shear stress. Conclusion This study demonstrates that NIRS- and OCT-detected lipid-rich regions exposed to low WSS are subject to enhanced plaque growth over a 1-year follow-up. The compartmentation and distribution of metabolites between mitochondria and the rest of the cell is a key parameter of cell signalling and pathology. Here, we have developed a rapid fractionation procedure that enables us to take mouse heart and liver from in vivo and within ~ 30 s stabilise the distribution of metabolites between mitochondria and the cytosol by rapid cooling, homogenisation and dilution. This is followed by centrifugation of mitochondria through an oil layer to separate mitochondrial and cytosolic fractions for subsequent metabolic analysis. Using this procedure revealed the in vivo compartmentation of mitochondrial metabolites and will enable the assessment of the distribution of metabolites between the cytosol and mitochondria during a range of situations in vivo. Integrating microfluidic mixers into lab-on-a-chip devices remains challenging yet important for numerous applications including dilutions, extractions, addition of reagents or drugs, and particle synthesis. High-efficiency mixers utilize large or intricate geometries that are difficult to manufacture and co-implement with lab-on-a-chip processes, leading to cumbersome two-chip solutions. We present a universal dry-film microfluidic mixing sticker that can retrofit pre-existing microfluidics and maintain high mixing performance over a range of Reynolds numbers and input mixing ratios. To attach our pre-mixing sticker module, remove the backing material and press the sticker onto an existing microfluidic/substrate. Our innovation centers around the multilayer use of laser-cut commercially available silicone-adhesive-coated polymer sheets as microfluidic layers to create geometrically complex, easy to assemble designs that can be adhered to a variety of surfaces, namely, existing microfluidic devices. Our approach enabled us to assemble the traditional yet difficult to manufacture "F-mixer" in minutes and conceptually extend this design to create a novel space-saving spiral F-mixer. Computational fluid dynamic simulations and experimental results confirmed that both designs maintained high performance for 0.1 < Re < 10 and disparate input mixing ratios of 1:10. We tested the integration of our system by using the pre-mixer to fluorescently tag proteins encapsulated in an existing microfluidic. When integrated with another microfluidic, our pre-mixing sticker successfully combined primary and secondary antibodies to fluorescently tag micropatterned proteins with high spatial uniformity, unlike a traditional pre-mixing "T-mixer" sticker. Given the ease of this technology, we anticipate numerous applications for point-of-care devices, microphysiological-systems-on-a-chip, and microfluidic-based biomedical research. Summary: Cardiac allograft vasculopathy (CAV) is an accelerated form of coronary artery disease that affects long‐term outcomes in heart transplant (HTx) patients. We prospectively evaluated the feasibility of coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) for the detection of CAV during clinical implementation at our center. All consecutive HTx patients >4 years post‐transplant were actively converted from myocardial perfusion imaging to CCTA for the annual assessment of CAV. Between February 2018 and May 2019, 129/172 (75%) HTx patients underwent a CCTA. Renal impairment (n = 21/43) was the most frequent reason for patients could not undergo CCTA. CCTA image quality was good–excellent in 118/129 (92%) patients, and the radiation dose was 2.1 (1.6–2.8) mSv. CCTA showed obstructive CAV in 19/129 (15%) patients. Thirteen (10%) patients underwent additional tests, of which 8 patients underwent coronary revascularization within 90 days of CCTA. After 1 year, 3 additional coronary angiograms were performed, resulting in one revascularization in a patient with known severe CAV who developed ventricular tachycardia. One myocardial infarction after coronary stenting and 2 non‐cardiac deaths were observed. CCTA can be successfully implemented for routine detection of CAV with good image quality and low radiation dose. CCTA allows CAV evaluation with the limited need for additional invasive testing.
