Cetacean brains are uniquely adapted to diving, but can be affected by diseases and exposure to toxins, triggering neurodegenerative processes that may cause stranding. Some species exhibit a significant post-reproductive lifespan (PRLS), increasing the likelihood of observing cumulative and age-related pathology. Immunohistochemistry against amyloid-β and hyperphosphorylated tau proteins is increasingly implemented to assess Alzheimer's Disease-like neuropathology in cetaceans, but comparisons between geographically distinct populations, animals of different age groups, sex, and with concomitant pathologies are lacking. We tested 43 cetaceans' (30 Tursiops truncatus; 13 Stenella coeruleoalba) parietal cortex, our most consistently archived cerebral tissue, in immunohistochemical analyses with amyloid-β oligomer 42 (Aβ-42) and hyperphosphorylated tau (pTau AT180 and AT8) antibodies. Aβ-42 antibody cross-reacted with plaques in three aged bottlenose and two aged striped dolphins, but was more often detected within neurons, glia, and blood vessels of all the dolphins. Histoscore comparisons between dolphins of different ages, sexes, and pathologies revealed significant correlations between older age, viral infections, and plaque presence. Protozoan cysts cross-reacted with Aβ-42 antibody. pTau signal was observed as single foci in neurons and neuropil in two young and two aged bottlenose dolphins. To our knowledge, this study is the first of its kind for the Mediterranean region and will help establish baseline understanding of physiological and pathological expression of proteins associated with human neurodegenerative disease in cetacean brains.

IntroductionConstant rate infusion (CRI) of benzodiazepines or propofol (PPF) is a therapeutic option for cluster seizures (CS) and status epilepticus (SE) in canine patients non-responding to first-line benzodiazepines or non-anesthetics. However, specific indications for optimal duration of CRI are lacking. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of duration of anesthetic CRI on outcome and length of hospital stay in dogs with refractory seizure activity of different etiology.Study designOpen-label non-randomized clinical trial.Materials and methodsSeventy-three client-owned dogs were enrolled. Two groups [experimental (EXP) vs. control (CTRL)] were compared. The EXP group received diazepam (DZP) or PPF CRI for 12 h (±1 h) and the CTRL group received DZP or PPF CRI for 24 h (±1 h) in addition to a standardized emergency treatment protocol identical for both study groups. The historical control group was made up of a population of dogs already reported in a previously published paper by the same authors. Favorable outcome was defined as seizure cessation after CRI, no seizure recurrence, and clinical recovery. Poor outcome was defined as seizure recurrence, death in hospital or no return to acceptable clinical baseline. Univariate statistical analysis was performed.ResultsThe study sample was 73 dogs: 45 (62%) received DZP CRI and 28 (38%) received PPF CRI. The EXP group was 39 dogs (25 DZP CRI and 14 PPF CRI) and the CTRL group 34 dogs (20 DZP CRI and 14 PPF CRI). We found no statistically significant difference in outcomes between the groups. The median length of stay was 56 h (IQR, 40–78) for the ALL EXP group and 58.5 h (IQR, 48–74.5) for the ALL CTRL group (p = 0.8).ConclusionEven though a shorter DZP or PPF CRI duration was not associated with a worse outcome, the study failed to identify a clear superiority of shorter CRI duration on outcome or length of hospital stay in dogs with refractory seizure activity of different etiology.

Abstract Objective The spread of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) agent to small ruminants is still a major issue in the surveillance of transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs). L-type bovine spongiform encephalopathy (L-BSE) is an atypical form of BSE with an unknown zoonotic potential that is transmissible to cattle and small ruminants. Our current knowledge of bovine atypical prion strains in sheep and goat relies only on experimental transmission studies by intracranial inoculation. To assess oral susceptibility of goats to L-BSE, we orally inoculated five goats with cattle L-BSE brain homogenates and investigated pathogenic prion protein (PrPsc) distribution by an ultrasensitive in vitro conversion assay known as Real-Time Quaking Induced Conversion (RT-QuIC). Results Despite a prolonged observation period of 80 months, all these animals and the uninfected controls did not develop clinical signs referable to TSEs and tested negative by standard diagnostics. Otherwise, RT-QuIC analysis showed seeding activity in five out of five examined brain samples. PrPsc accumulation was also detected in spinal cord and lymphoreticular system. These results indicate that caprine species are susceptible to L-BSE by oral transmission and that ultrasensitive prion tests deserve consideration to improve the potential of current surveillance systems against otherwise undetectable forms of animal prion infections.

Complete animal welfare evaluation in intensive farming is challenging. With this study, we investigate new biomarkers for animal physical and mental health by comparing plasma expression of biochemical indicators in dairy cows reared in three different systems: (A) semi-intensive free-stall, (B) non-intensive tie-stall, and (C) intensive free-stall. Additionally, protein levels of mature brain-derived neurotrophic factor (mBDNF) and its precursor form (proBDNF) and indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO1) specific activity were evaluated in brain samples collected from 12 cattle culled between 73 and 138 months of age. Alterations in plasma lipid composition and in the kynurenine pathway of tryptophan metabolism were observed in the tie-stall-reared animals. The total plasma BDNF concentration was higher in tie-stall group compared to the two free-housing groups. Brain analysis of the tie-stall animals revealed a different mBDNF/proBDNF ratio, with a higher level of proBDNF (p < 0.001). Our data are similar to previous studies on animal models of depression, which reported that inhibition of the conversion of proBDNF in its mature form and/or elevated peripheral kynurenine pathway activation may underlie cerebral biochemical changes and induce depressive-like state behavior in animals.

Context. The spatial distribution of dark matter halos carries cosmological and astrophysical information. Cosmological information can be considered to be contained in the connection between halo main properties and the large-scale halo bias, while the astrophysical information would be encoded in the scaling relations between halo properties. The combination of these two contributions leads to the effect of secondary halo bias. Aims. Our goal is to measure the signal of secondary halo bias as a function of a variety of intrinsic and environmental halo properties and to characterize its statistical significance as a function of cosmological redshift. Methods. Using fixed and paired N-body simulations of dark-matter halos – the UNIT simulation – with masses above ∼1011 M⊙h−1 identified over a wide range of cosmological redshifts (0 < z < 5), we explored the behavior of the scaling relations among different halo properties. We included novel environmental properties based on the halo distribution as well as the underlying dark-matter field. We implemented an object-by-object estimator of large-scale effective bias and tested its validity against standard approaches. With a bias assigned to each tracer, we performed a statistical analysis aimed at characterizing the distribution of the bias and the signal of the secondary halo bias. Results. We show how the halo scaling relations linking direct probes of the halo potential well do not depend on the environment. On the contrary, links between the halo mass and the so-called set of secondary halo properties are sensitive to the cosmological environment, mainly to under-dense regions. We show that the signal of secondary bias is derived statistically from secondary correlations beyond the standard link to the halo mass. Conclusions. We show that the secondary bias arises through nonlocal and/or environmental properties related either to the halo distribution or to the properties of the underlying dark-matter field. In particular, properties such as the tidal field (a measure of the anisotropy of the density field) and the local Mach number (a measure of the local kinetic temperature of the halo distribution) generate the signals of the secondary bias with the highest significance. We propose applications of the assignment of individual bias for the generation of mock catalogs containing the signal of secondary bias, as well as a series of cosmological analyses aimed at mining large galaxy datasets. Cetacean morbillivirus (CeMV) is responsible for epidemic and endemic fatalities in free-ranging cetaceans. Neuro-inflammation sustained by CeMV is a leading cause of death in stranded cetaceans. A novel dolphin morbillivirus (DMV) strain of Atlantic origin circulating in Italian waters since early 2016 has caused acute/subacute lesions associated with positive immunolabelling of the virus. To date, myelin damage has not been fully documented and investigated in cetaceans. This study describes neuropathological findings in the brain tissue of 31 cetaceans found stranded along the Italian coastline and positive for DMV infection on molecular testing. Cell changes in the areas of myelinopathy were revealed by double indirect immunofluorescence. The most frequent DMV-associated lesions were astro-microgliosis, neuronal necrosis, spongiosis, malacia, and non-suppurative meningoencephalitis. Myelin reduction and areas of demyelination were revealed by means of a specific myelin biomarker. Morbilliviral antigen immunolabelling was mainly observed in neurons and microglial cells, in association with a marked activation of microglia and astrocytes. These findings extend our knowledge of DMV-associated brain lesions and shed light on their pathogenesis.

Starting from two case studies, the Belep Islands (New Caledonia) and Futuna (Wallis and Futuna), this essay presents the hypothesis that colonial and post-colonial dynamics tend to reproduce, as in fractals, the centre-periphery model. In the ‘Francophone Pacific’ inter-island relationships have historically been created in which the peripheral islands of islands claim their autonomy and, at times, their total independence from the central island. This is the case for Futuna, a peripheral Polynesian island that claims autonomy from Wallis. It is also the case for Belep, in the extreme north of New Caledonia, which suffers from persistent marginality with regard to the Grande Terre. Decolonisation of Futuna and Belep seems possible at the cost of dismantling the centre-periphery fractal model. These islands of islands show us how the reticular model, the enhancement of relationships and reciprocity, and the recovery of their complexity are a possible way out of colonialism.

Scrapie is a fatal neurodegenerative disease of sheep and goats belonging to the group of Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathy or prion diseases. The EU has adopted mandatory measures for scrapie surveillance to safeguard public and animal health because it is highly contagious and might decimate all genetic susceptible animals in affected flocks. Definite diagnosis of scrapie relies on the detection of the pathological prion protein in brain tissues and there are still no blood biomarkers available for making diagnosis in living animals that can be used for the screening of sheep in scrapie-affected flocks. Neurofilament light (NfL) protein, a valid biomarker for neuronal and axonal damages, can now be easily measured in blood by the ultra-sensitive single molecule array (Simoa) technology. Recent work reported that serum NfL is increased in neurodegenerative diseases, including human prion diseases, but no data are available for scrapie or other animal prion diseases. Here, we found that the median serum NfL concentration in scrapie animals (56.2, IQR 42.2-84.8, n = 9) was more than 15 times higher (p = 0.00084) than that found in control samples (3.4, IQR 3.0-26.3, n = 11). Moreover, serum NfL concentration in scrapie sheep with clinical signs (n = 2; 75.3, 15.7 pg/ml) did not significantly (p = 0.541; t-test) differ from scrapie animals without clinical signs (n = 7; 61.0, 10.7 pg/ml). The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis estimated the cut-off value of 31 pg/ml serum NfL for distinguishing scrapie-infected sheep from controls. The application of this cut-off value gives an accuracy of the test of 95% (percent error of 5.23%). These data indicate that the Simoa test for serum NfL might be a useful screening method for detecting preclinical scrapie in living sheep. Finally, the preliminary data reported here need confirmation in large and more structured studies.

Aim: Early onset of psychopathology is often an index of a more severe clinical course and worse prognosis. This review examined the course of bipolar disorder (BD) with onset in childhood and adolescence, with a focus on persistence of symptoms, severity of illness, comorbidity, and functional impairment. Methods: The databases of PubMed, Embase, and PsycInfo were systematically searched for publications since 1990 reporting on long-term (12 months or longer) assessments of patients with early onset BD. Results: Forty-two relevant publications were identified, which reported on data derived from 15 different patient cohorts, including 7 prospective research psychopathology studies, 4 medical record reviews, 2 follow-ups of clinical trial samples, 1 managed care database, and 1 nationwide registry, for a total of 10,187 patients. The length of follow-ups ranged from 1.0 to 15 years. Diagnostic stability of BD ranged from 73% to 100% over ten years. Recovery rate from an index episode was 81.5–100% and recurrence rate was 35–67%. Suicide attempt cumulative prevalence in five years was 18–20%. Earlier age at the first episode predicted a more severe clinical course. Conclusions: Early onset BD persists over time through adolescence, with homotypic diagnostic continuity over the years, but heterogeneity in the severity of the clinical course. Whether early identification and treatment improves distal prognosis remains to be further investigated.

Monitoring of small ruminants for transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) has recently become more relevant after two natural scrapie suspected cases of goats were found to be positive for classical BSE (C-BSE). C-BSE probably established itself in this species unrecognized, undermining disease control measures. This opens the possibility that TSEs in goats may remain an animal source for human prion diseases. Currently, there are no data regarding the natural presence of the atypical BSE in caprines. Here we report that C-BSE and L-type atypical BSE (L-BSE) isolates from bovine species are intracerebrally transmissible to goats, with a 100% attack rate and a significantly shorter incubation period and survival time after C-BSE than after L-BSE experimental infection, suggesting a lower species barrier for classical agentin goat. All animals showed nearly the same clinical features of disease characterized by skin lesions, including broken hair and alopecia, and abnormal mental status. Histology and immunohistochemistry showed several differences between C-BSE and L-BSE infection, allowing discrimination between the two different strains. The lymphoreticular involvement we observed in the C-BSE positive goats argues in favour of a peripheral distribution of PrPSc similar to classical scrapie. Western blot and other currently approved screening tests detected both strains in the goats and were able to classify negative control animals. These data demonstrate that active surveillance of small ruminants, as applied to fallen stock and/or healthy slaughter populations in European countries, is able to correctly identify and classify classical and L-BSE and ultimately protect public health.

Aim: We reviewed the clinical features of a sample of pediatric acquired demyelinating syndromes with the purpose of determining the appropriate protocol for follow-up after the first episode. Methods: A multicenter retrospective observational study was conducted on a cohort of 40 children diagnosed with a first episode of acquired demyelinating syndrome over the period 2012-2021. Patients were evaluated with clinical and neuroradiologic assessment after 3, 6, and 12 months, with a median follow-up of 4.0 years. Results: At the first acquired demyelinating syndrome episode, 18 patients (45%) were diagnosed with acute disseminated encephalomyelitis, 18 (45%) with clinical isolated syndrome, and 4 (10%) with multiple sclerosis. By month 12, 12 patients (30%) had progressed from an initial diagnosis of acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (2) or clinical isolated syndrome (10) to multiple sclerosis. Of these, 6 had clinical relapse and 6 radiologic relapse only. The first relapse occurred after a median of 3 months. Among the patients who had evolved toward multiple sclerosis, there was a prevalence of females (P =.014), higher oligoclonal bands positivity (P =.009), and older median age (P <.001) as compared with those who had remained stable. Interpretation: Both clinical and radiologic follow-up of children with acquired demyelinating syndromes is crucial, especially during the first year after acute onset, for early identification of multiple sclerosis and prompt initiation of disease-modifying treatment to delay axonal damage and to limit disability. Sleep disturbance and emotional dysregulation (ED) are common and often functionally impairing in young children with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDD). This study investigated the relationship between sleep disturbance and ED in a sample of preschoolers with ASD, intellectual disability, or global developmental delay, and examined possible predictors of their persistence over time. All children under 6 years of age clinically referred between July 2018 and May 2022 to two neuropsychiatric specialized centers for NDD received a comprehensive diagnostic evaluation, including the Child Behavior Checklist 1.5–5 (CBCL), the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule-2 (ADOS-2), and standardized tests of cognitive and global development. Sleep disturbances were assessed with the CBCL-sleep score, and ED with the CBCL Attention, Aggression, and Anxious/Depressed scales (CBCL-AAA). A reassessment of sleep and ED was conducted after 6 months or longer, including the Child Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ). Multivariate analyses and mixed linear regression models were conducted. A total of 136 children, 75.7% male, median age 38.27 months, IQR 15.39, 41.2% with global developmental disorder (GDD) or intellectual disability (ID) participated in the study. Of them, 64.7% were diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and 35.3% with other NDD (w/o ASD). Sleep disturbances (CBCL-Sleep) and ED (CBCL-AAA) were positively correlated (p < 0.001), after accounting for age, ID/GDD and autism symptom severity, in both the entire sample and separately in each diagnostic group (ASD and NDD w/o ASD). Seventy-five children (55%) were reassessed a mean 17.2 months afterwards. There was persistence of the positive correlation between sleep problems and ED (p < 0.001) in both the entire sample and each diagnostic group. The longitudinal mixed linear model showed that ED at follow-up was predicted by baseline sleep problems (p = 0.008), ED (p < 0.001), and ASD severity (p = 0.015). Sleep disturbances are significantly associated with ED in young children with NDD, either with or without ASD, both cross-sectionally and prospectively over time. Sleep problems represent an important comorbidity and a potential treatment target for improving emotional stability in NDD. • In children with neurodevelopmental disorders, sleep disturbances (SD) were associated with emotional dysregulation (ED). • The correlation between SD and ED was not transient but persisted over time. • Severity of SD and autism symptoms predicted severity of ED over time. • Sleep problems represent an important comorbidity and a potential treatment target for improving emotional stability in NDD. Simple Summary: Animal welfare assessment is crucial for farm animal health and productivity. New standardized biomarkers are needed to gain a complete picture of the ethological, physiological, and psychological needs of animals. With this study, we wanted to investigate potential biomarkers for measuring the physical and mental health of dairy cows. Since the stress induced by housing conditions can give rise to multisystem alterations, we compared the effects of three different farming systems. Plasma levels of hematological and inflammatory markers and more than 130 metabolites were investigated by magnetic bead panel multiplex assay and mass spectrometry assay, in addition to brain and plasma levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a neurotrophin involved in neuroplasticity and synaptogenesis, and indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase, an enzyme whose dysregulated activity in humans has been correlated with mood disorders. Our findings suggest that because BDNF level, kynurenine pathway, and lipid-profiling alterations may modulate a depression-like state in tie-stall cattle, they may be potential biomarkers for monitoring dairy cattle welfare. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a complex disease characterized by the interplay of genetic and environmental factors for which, despite decades of intense research, diagnosis remains rather delayed, and most therapeutic options fail. Therefore, unravelling other potential pathogenetic mechanisms and searching for reliable markers are high priorities. In the present study, we employ the SOMAscan assay, an aptamer-based proteomic technology, to determine the circulating proteomic profile of ALS patients. The expression levels of ~1300 proteins were assessed in plasma, and 42 proteins with statistically significant differential expression between ALS patients and healthy controls were identified. Among these, four were upregulated proteins, Thymus- and activation-regulated chemokine, metalloproteinase inhibitor 3 and nidogen 1 and 2 were selected and validated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays in an overlapping cohort of patients. Following statistical analyses, different expression patterns of these proteins were observed in the familial and sporadic ALS patients. The proteins identified in this study might provide insight into ALS pathogenesis and represent potential candidates to develop novel targeted therapies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Microplastics (MPs) are ubiquitous pollutants but, still, little is known about their effects on human and animal health. Herein, our aim is to investigate cytotoxicity, oxidative stress, inflammation and correlated gene modulation following exposure to polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) in HRT-18 and CMT-93 epithelial cell lines. After 6, 24 and 48 h PS-MPs treatment, cell viability (MTT) and oxidative stress (SOD) assays were performed; subsequently, expression changes and cytokines release were investigated by Real-Time PCR and Magnetic-beads panel Multiplex Assay, respectively. For each exposure time, a significantly increased cytotoxicity was observed in both cell lines, whereas SOD activity increased only in CMT-93 cells. Furthermore, Magnetic-beads Multiplex Assay revealed an increased release of IL-8 in HRT-18 cells' medium, also confirmed by gene expression analysis. Results obtained suggest the presence of a pro-inflammatory pattern induced by PS-MPs treatment that could be related to the observed increase in cytotoxicity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SubHalo Abundance Matching (SHAM) is an empirical method for constructing galaxy catalogues based on high-resolution N -body simulations. We apply SHAM on the UNIT simulation to simulate SDSS BOSS/eBOSS luminous red galaxies (LRGs) within a wide redshift range of 0.2 < |$z$| < 1.0. Besides the typical SHAM scatter parameter σ , we include |$v$| smear and V ceil to take into account the redshift uncertainty and the galaxy incompleteness, respectively. These two additional parameters are critical for reproducing the observed 2PCF multipoles on 5–25 |$\, h^{-1}\, {\rm Mpc}$|⁠. The redshift uncertainties obtained from the best-fitting |$v$| smear agree with those measured from repeat observations for all SDSS LRGs except for the LOWZ sample. We explore several potential systematics but none of them can explain the discrepancy found in LOWZ. Our explanation is that the LOWZ galaxies might contain another type of galaxies that needs to be treated differently. The evolution of the measured σ and V ceil also reveals that the incompleteness of eBOSS galaxies decreases with the redshift. This is the consequence of the magnitude lower limit applied in eBOSS LRG target selection. Our SHAM also set upper limits for the intrinsic scatter of the galaxy–halo relation, given a complete galaxy sample: σ int < 0.31 for LOWZ at 0.2 < |$z$| < 0.33, σ int < 0.36 for LOWZ at 0.33 < |$z$| < 0.43, and σ int < 0.46 for CMASS at 0.43 < |$z$| < 0.51. New surveys such as European Space Agencys (ESA's) Euclid mission are planned to map with unprecedented precision the large-scale structure of the Universe by measuring the 3D positions of tens of millions of galaxies. It is necessary to develop theoretically modelled galaxy catalogues to estimate the expected performance and to optimize the analysis strategy of these surveys. We populate two pairs of (1  h −1 Gpc)3 volume dark matter-only simulations from the UNIT project with galaxies using the Semi-Analytic Galaxy Evolution semi-analytic model of galaxy formation, coupled to the photoionization model get_emlines to estimate their H α emission. These catalogues represent a unique suite that includes galaxy formation physics and – thanks to the fixed-pair technique used – an effective volume of |$\sim\!(5\,h^{-1}\,\rm {Gpc})^3$|⁠ , which is several times larger than the Euclid survey. We present the performance of these data and create five additional emission-line galaxy (ELG) catalogues by applying a dust-attenuation model as well as adjusting the flux threshold as a function of redshift in order to reproduce Euclid-forecast d N /d z values. As a first application, we study the abundance and clustering of those model H α ELGs: for scales greater than ∼5  h −1 Mpc, we find a scale-independent bias with a value of b ∼ 1 at redshift z ∼ 0.5, that can increase nearly linearly to b ∼ 4 at z ∼ 2, depending on the ELG catalogue. We use the IllustrisTNG100 hydrodynamical simulation to study the dependence of the galaxy two-point correlation function on a broad range of secondary subhalo and galactic properties. We construct galaxy mock catalogues adopting a standard subhalo abundance matching scheme coupled with a secondary assignment between galaxy colour or specific star formation rate and the following subhalo properties: starvation redshift z starve, concentration at infall, overdensity |$\delta _R^{\rm env}$|⁠ , tidal anisotropy α R , and tidal overdensity δ R . The last two quantities allow us to fully characterize the tidal field of our subhaloes, acting as mediators between their internal and large-scale properties. The resulting mock catalogues overall return good agreement with the IllustrisTNG100 measurements. The accuracy of each model strongly depends on the correlation between the secondary galaxy and subhalo properties employed. Among all the subhalo proxies tested, we find that z starve and c infall are the ones that best trace the large-scale structure, producing robust clustering predictions for different samples of red/blue and quenched/star-forming galaxies. Objective: The spread of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) agent to small ruminants is still a major issue in the surveillance of transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs). L-type bovine spongiform encephalopathy (L-BSE) is an atypical form of BSE with an unknown zoonotic potential that is transmissible to cattle and small ruminants. Our current knowledge of bovine atypical prion strains in sheep and goat relies only on experimental transmission studies by intracranial inoculation. To assess oral susceptibility of goats to L-BSE, we orally inoculated five goats with cattle L-BSE brain homogenates and investigated pathogenic prion protein (PrPsc) distribution by an ultrasensitive in vitro conversion assay known as Real-Time Quaking Induced Conversion (RT-QuIC). Results: Despite a prolonged observation period of 80 months, all these animals and the uninfected controls did not develop clinical signs referable to TSEs and tested negative by standard diagnostics. Otherwise, RT-QuIC analysis showed seeding activity in five out of five examined brain samples. PrPsc accumulation was also detected in spinal cord and lymphoreticular system. These results indicate that caprine species are susceptible to L-BSE by oral transmission and that ultrasensitive prion tests deserve consideration to improve the potential of current surveillance systems against otherwise undetectable forms of animal prion infections. The jackknife method gives an internal covariance estimate for large-scale structure surveys and allows model-independent errors on cosmological parameters. Using the SDSS-III BOSS CMASS sample, we study how the jackknife size and number of resamplings impact the precision of the covariance estimate on the correlation function multipoles and the error on the inferred baryon acoustic scale. We compare the measurement with the MultiDark Patchy mock galaxy catalogues, and we also validate it against a set of lognormal mocks with the same survey geometry. We build several jackknife configurations that vary in size and number of resamplings. We introduce the Hartlap factor in the covariance estimate that depends on the number of jackknife resamplings. We also find that it is useful to apply the tapering scheme to estimate the precision matrix from a limited number of resamplings. The results from CMASS and mock catalogues show that the error estimate of the baryon acoustic scale does not depend on the jackknife scale. For the shift parameter α, we find an average error of 1.6 per cent, 2.2 per cent and 1.2 per cent, respectively, from CMASS, Patchy, and lognormal jackknife covariances. Despite these uncertainties fluctuate significantly due to some structural limitations of the jackknife method, our α estimates are in reasonable agreement with published pre-reconstruction analyses. We use three semi-analytical models (SAMs) of galaxy formation and evolution run on the same 1  h −1 Gpc MultiDark Planck2 cosmological simulation to investigate the properties of [O  ii ] emission line galaxies at redshift z ∼ 1. We compare model predictions with different observational data sets, including DEEP2– firefly galaxies with absolute magnitudes. We estimate the [O  ii ] luminosity (⁠|$L{\left[\rm{O\,{\small II}}\right]}$|⁠) of our model galaxies using the public code get_ emlines  , which ideally assumes as input the instantaneous star formation rates (SFRs). This property is only available in one of the SAMs under consideration, while the others provide average SFRs, as most models do. We study the feasibility of inferring galaxies'    |$L{\left[\rm{O\,{\small II}}\right]}$|   from average SFRs in post-processing. We find that the result is accurate for model galaxies with dust attenuated   |$L{\left[\rm{O\,{\small II}}\right]}$|  ≲ 1042.2 erg s−1 (⁠|$\lt 5{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| discrepancy). The galaxy properties that correlate the most with the model   |$L{\left[\rm{O\,{\small II}}\right]}$|  are the SFR and the observed-frame u and g broad-band magnitudes. Such correlations have r -values above 0.64 and a dispersion that varies with   |$L{\left[\rm{O\,{\small II}}\right]}$|  . We fit these correlations with simple linear relations and use them as proxies for   |$L{\left[\rm{O\,{\small II}}\right]}$|  , together with an observational conversion that depends on SFR and metallicity. These proxies result in [O  ii ] luminosity functions and halo occupation distributions with shapes that vary depending on both the model and the method used to derive   |$L{\left[\rm{O\,{\small II}}\right]}$|  . The amplitude of the clustering of model galaxies with   |$L{\left[\rm{O\,{\small II}}\right]}$|  >1040.4 erg s−1 remains overall unchanged on scales above 1  |$\, h^{-1}$|  Mpc, independently of the |$L{\left[\rm{O\,{\small II}}\right]}$| computation. We test the history of structure formation from redshift 1 to today by matching galaxies from the VIMOS Public Extragalactic Redshift Survey (VIPERS) and Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) with dark matter haloes in the MultiDark, Small MultiDark Planck (SMDPL), N -body simulation. We first show that the standard subhalo abundance matching (SHAM) recipe implemented with MultiDark fits the clustering of galaxies well both at redshift 0 for SDSS and at redshift 1 for VIPERS. This is an important validation of the SHAM model at high redshift. We then remap the simulation time steps to test alternative growth histories and infer the growth index γ = 0.6 ± 0.3. This analysis demonstrates the power of using N -body simulations to forward model galaxy surveys for cosmological inference. The most massive and luminous galaxies in the Universe serve as powerful probes to study the formation of structure, the assembly of mass, and cosmology. However, their detailed formation and evolution is still barely understood. Here we extract a sample of massive mock galaxies from the semi-analytical model of galaxy formation (SAM) galacticus from the MultiDark-Galaxies by replicating the CMASS photometric selection from the SDSS - iii Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS). The comparison of the galacticus CMASS-mock with BOSS – CMASS data allows us to explore different aspects of the massive galaxy population at 0.5 < z < 0.6, including the galaxy–halo connection and the galaxy clustering. We find good agreement between our modelled galaxies and observations regarding the galaxy–halo connection, but our CMASS-mock overestimates the clustering amplitude of the two-point correlation function due to a smaller number density compared to BOSS, a lack of blue objects, and a small intrinsic scatter in stellar mass at fixed halo mass of <0.1 dex. To alleviate this problem, we construct an alternative mock catalogue mimicking the CMASS colour–magnitude distribution by randomly down-sampling the SAM catalogue. This CMASS-mock reproduces the clustering of CMASS galaxies within 1σ and shows some environmental dependency of star formation properties that could be connected to the quenching of star formation and the assembly bias. We use the DECaLS DR3 survey photometry matched to the SDSS-III/BOSS DR12 spectroscopic catalogue to investigate the morphology and stellar mass–size relation of luminous red galaxies within the CMASS and LOWZ galaxy samples in the redshift range 0.2 < $$z$$ < 0.7. The large majority of both samples is composed of early-type galaxies with De Vaucouleurs profiles, while only less than 20 per cent are late-type exponentials. We calibrate DECaLS effective radii using the higher-resolution CFHT/MegaCam observations and optimize the correction for each morphological type. By cross-matching the photometric properties of the early-type population with the Portsmouth stellar mass catalogue, we are able to explore the high-mass end of the distribution using a large sample of 322994 galaxies over 4380 deg2. We find a clear correlation between the sizes and stellar masses of these galaxies, which appears flatter than previous estimates at lower masses. The sizes of these early-type galaxies do not exhibit significant evolution within the BOSS redshift range, but a slightly declining redshift trend is found when these results are combined with $$z$$ ∼ 0.1 SDSS measurements at the high-mass end. Monitoring of small ruminants for transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) has recently become more relevant after two natural scrapie suspected cases of goats were found to be positive for classical BSE (C-BSE). C-BSE probably established itself in this species unrecognized, undermining disease control measures. This opens the possibility that TSEs in goats may remain an animal source for human prion diseases. Currently, there are no data regarding the natural presence of the atypical BSE in caprines. Here we report that C-BSE and L-type atypical BSE (L-BSE) isolates from bovine species are intracerebrally transmissible to goats, with a 100% attack rate and a significantly shorter incubation period and survival time after C-BSE than after L-BSE experimental infection, suggesting a lower species barrier for classical agentin goat. All animals showed nearly the same clinical features of disease characterized by skin lesions, including broken hair and alopecia, and abnormal mental status. Histology and immunohistochemistry showed several differences between C-BSE and L-BSE infection, allowing discrimination between the two different strains. The lymphoreticular involvement we observed in the C-BSE positive goats argues in favour of a peripheral distribution of PrPSc similar to classical scrapie. Western blot and other currently approved screening tests detected both strains in the goats and were able to classify negative control animals. These data demonstrate that active surveillance of small ruminants, as applied to fallen stock and/or healthy slaughter populations in European countries, is able to correctly identify and classify classical and L-BSE and ultimately protect public health. Starting from two case studies, the Belep Islands (New Caledonia) and Futuna (Wallis and Futuna), this essay presents the hypothesis that colonial and post-colonial dynamics tend to reproduce, as in fractals, the centre-periphery model. In the 'Francophone Pacific' inter-island relationships have historically been created in which the peripheral islands of islands claim their autonomy and, at times, their total independence from the central island. This is the case for Futuna, a peripheral Polynesian island that claims autonomy from Wallis. It is also the case for Belep, in the extreme north of New Caledonia, which suffers from persistent marginality with regard to the Grande Terre. Decolonisation of Futuna and Belep seems possible at the cost of dismantling the centre-periphery fractal model. These islands of islands show us how the reticular model, the enhancement of relationships and reciprocity, and the recovery of their complexity are a possible way out of colonialism. We study the galaxy clustering dependence on the [O II] emission line luminosity in the SDSS DR7 Main galaxy sample at mean redshift z ∼ 0.1. We select volume-limited samples of galaxies with different [O II] luminosity thresholds and measure their projected, monopole and quadrupole two-point correlation functions. We model these observations using the 1 h-1 Gpc Multi Dark-Planck cosmological simulation and generate light cones with the SUrvey Gener A to R algorithm. To interpret our results, we adopt a modified (Sub)Halo Abundance Matching scheme, accounting for the stellar mass incompleteness of the emission line galaxies. The satellite fraction constitutes an extra parameter in this model and allows to optimize the clustering fit on both small and intermediate scales (i.e. rp ≲ 30 h-1 Mpc), with no need of any velocity bias correction. We find that, in the local Universe, the [O II] luminosity correlateswith all the clustering statistics explored and with the galaxy bias. This latter quantity correlates more strongly with the SDSS r-band magnitude than [O II] luminosity. In conclusion, we propose a straightforward method to produce reliable clustering models, entirely built on the simulation products, which provides robust predictions of the typical ELG host halo masses and satellite fraction values. The electroencephalogram (EEG) is an electrodiagnostic technique widely used in both scientific research and clinical medicine. It makes it possible to study the neurophysiology of brain activity by recording real-time changes in electrical potential produced by cortical activation. The importance of EEG in diagnosing canine epilepsy demonstrates its usefulness when the owner's description of crises is not clear or when the episodes cannot be differentiated from behavioral or cardiac disorders. However, EEG recordings also often record electrical activity from sources other than the brain, which may interfere with the clinical event-related signal. This activity is known as artifactual electrical activity, and the signal changes recorded in these cases corrupt the trace when they are superimposed on brain activity or even, in some cases, mimic pathologic abnormalities. The first step in analyzing and interpreting EEG traces is to recognize artifacts and other specific transient events. This retrospective study set out to ascertain whether artifacts comparable to those described in humans are observed in protocols used to perform short-term interictal EEG for canine epilepsy and how these can be classified. We explore the massive bluer star-forming population of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) III/BOSS CMASS DR11 galaxies atz>0.55 to quantify their differences, in terms of redshiftspace distortions and large-scale bias, with respect to the luminous red galaxy sample. We perform a qualitative analysis to understand the significance of these differences and whether we can model and reproduce them in mock catalogues. Specifically, we measure galaxy clustering in CMASS on small and intermediate scales (0.1 ≲ r ≲ 50 h-1 Mpc) by computing the two-point correlation function - both projected and redshift-space - of these galaxies, and a new statistic, Σ(π), able to separate the coherent and dispersed redshift-space distortion contributions and the large-scale bias. We interpret our clustering measurements by adopting a Halo Occupation Distribution (HOD) scheme that maps them on to high-resolution N-body cosmological simulations to produce suitable mock galaxy catalogues. The traditional HOD prescription can be applied to the red and the blue samples, independently, but this approach is unphysical since it allows the same mock galaxies to be either red or blue. To overcome this ambiguity, we modify the standard formulation and infer the red and the blue models by splitting the full mock catalogue into two complementary and non-overlapping submocks. This separation is performed by constraining the HOD with the observed CMASS red and blue galaxy fractions and produces reliable and accurate models. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Current and future large redshift surveys, as the Sloan Digital Sky Survey IV extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (SDSS-IV/eBOSS) or the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI), will use emission-line galaxies (ELGs) to probe cosmological models by mapping the large-scale structure of the Universe in the redshift range 0.6 < z < 1.7. With current data, we explore the halo-galaxy connection by measuring three clustering properties of g-selected ELGs as matter tracers in the redshift range 0.6 < z < 1: (i) the redshift-space two-point correlation function using spectroscopic redshifts from the BOSS ELG sample and VIPERS; (ii) the angular two-point correlation function on the footprint of the CFHT-LS; (iii) the galaxy-galaxy lensing signal around the ELGs using the CFHTLenS. We interpret these observations by mapping them on to the latest high-resolution MultiDark Planck N-body simulation, using a novel (Sub)Halo-Abundance Matching technique that accounts for the ELG incompleteness. ELGs at z ~ 0.8 live in haloes of (1 ± 0.5) × 1012 h-1M☉ and 22.5 ± 2.5 per cent of them are satellites belonging to a larger halo. The halo occupation distribution of ELGs indicates that we are sampling the galaxies in which stars form in the most efficient way, according to their stellar-to-halo mass ratio.
