Nitrogen-based heterocycles such as pyrazole, imidazole, 1,2,4-triazole, benzimidazole, and benzotriazole substituted fused pyran derivatives (6a–e, 8a–e, 10a–e, 12a–e, & 14a–e) have been synthesized and tested for their in vitro anticancer efficacies against MCF7, A549, and HCT116 cancer cell lines. Among the compounds, 6e, 14b, and 8c were identified as the most potent against MCF7, A549, and HCT116, with IC50 values of 12.46 ± 2.72 μM, 0.23 ± 0.12 μM, and 7.58 ± 1.01 μM, respectively. Further studies demonstrated that these compounds can change cellular and nuclear morphology and inhibit colony formation in the tested cancer cells. They also remarkably block/inhibit the cell cycle progression of cancer cells at various phases. DNA damage analysis and apoptosis studies revealed that these compounds have the potential to induce DNA double-strand breaks and apoptosis. In silico absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion, and toxicity (ADMET) properties of the potent compounds were assessed, revealing that all the compounds exhibited favorable pharmacokinetic and toxicological properties. Emerging multi-drug resistance (MDR) bacteria are alarming the medicinal chemistry community to establish a new class of antimicrobials with high selectivity, less toxicity, and a new mode of action. Therefore, a new series of chalcone-morpholine hybrids (6a–p) were synthesized using copper(I)-catalyzed Huisgen 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition to link the above two pharmacophores with the 1,2,3-triazole ring. Antibacterial potentials of all the synthesized compounds were studied against two Gram-positive (Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus), and three Gram-negative (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas putida, and Klebsiella pneumonia) bacterial strains. Among the tested series of compounds, 6a, 6c, and 6m against all the bacterial strains, 6e against both the Gram-positive bacteria, and 6h against all the Gram-negative bacteria were found to exhibit broad-spectrum activity compared with the standard Ampicillin. Indole and pyrazole are two important scaffolds in the field of medicinal chemistry. Compounds bearing indole and/or pyrazole moiety have been extensively investigated for a wide range of biological applications. Of them, compounds containing both indole and pyrazole moieties (also termed as indole‐pyrazole hybrids) are of particular interest since synergistic pharmacological activities may be gained comparing to those with each individual pharmacophore. Indole‐pyrazole hybrids can be classified into two general classes of direct‐linked hybrids and spacer‐linked hybrids. For each class, it can be sub‐divided into indole‐C2 pyrazole hybrids, indole‐C3 pyrazole hybrids and indole‐C4/5/6/7 pyrazole hybrids based on the substitution position of pyrazole on the indole moiety. Many types of indole‐pyrazole hybrids have been reported with good antimicrobial, anticancer, antitumor, anti‐inflammatory, anti‐oxidant activities etc. However, no papers have been noted to comprehensively summarize the chemical synthesis of these important indole‐pyrazole hybrids as bioactive compounds except for a few reviews focusing on the synthesis of each individual indole‐ and pyrazole‐containing derivatives. Thus, we here present a comprehensive and updated review focusing on the progress of chemical synthesis of all types of indole‐pyrazole hybrids in order to provide a better understanding of the indole‐pyrazole hybrids to researchers in the fields of synthetic chemistry and to facilitating drug development. Toward achieving an efficient micro-optical temperature sensor in a wide visible spectral range, Sm3+:ZnO micro-spheres are fabricated by the laser ablation technique. Visible range whispering gallery mode resonances are observed and are found to be lasing above low optical threshold with a quality factor of the order of 103. A temperature-induced change in whispering gallery modes is observed with a sensitivity of 0.04 nm/°C from the micro-sphere of diameter 10.5 μm. Using these results, cost-effective and bio-compatible miniature temperature sensors that operate in the visible spectral range could be devised. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Highly crystalline and smooth 1% Ho3+ doped ZnO microspheres with diameters ranging from 0.5 to 15 μm were synthesized using laser ablation technique. Near band edge whispering gallery mode (WGM) resonances from Ho:ZnO microspheres with a single oscillation route in the UV range are observed with 355 nm excitation. Apart from the significantly enhanced visible WGM resonances associated with intrinsic oxygen vacancy defects by Ho3+ doping, the visible range WGM resonances associated with the Ho3+ 5F5 → 5I8 emission at 629–690 nm are also observed with a 488 nm excitation. The WGMs of Ho3+ f-f emission possess lower threshold and high Q-factor values. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
