The cartilage and bone structure has provided insightful knowledge about evolution and ecology of fish, which is an important component of biological oceanography. However, the whole-body bone staining is a lengthy and complicated process that typically takes five days to several months, and the improvement of the conventional method has been one of the important issues in this field. Here we report a quick and easy whole-mount bone staining method for small fish, in which a newly designed fixative is applied. Although the deep oceans represent Earth's largest habitat, the challenges of studying deep‐sea organisms in situ have limited our understanding of adaptation, ecology, and behaviour in these important ecosystems. One fundamental trait of fishes that remains largely unexplored in the deep ocean is swimming, a vital process for movement, migration, and dispersal in marine habitats. Deep‐sea conditions such as temperature, pressure, and food availability could each impact the speed and efficiency of swimming in fishes. To investigate swimming kinematics of fishes with increasing depth, we analysed in situ video of bony fishes across a 6000‐m depth gradient. We compared open‐source videos of fishes from National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Ocean Exploration with tank‐based recordings of shallow‐water relatives from Puget Sound, Washington, USA to understand how both habitat depth and phylogeny influence swimming in fishes. We analysed kinematics in four dominant demersal fish groups, the orders Anguilliformes, Gadiformes, Ophidiiformes, and Perciformes. Deep‐sea fishes swam consistently slowly. Swimming kinematics varied across temperature, oxygen, body elongation, and depth. These results suggest that swimming kinematics do not change linearly with increasing habitat depth in fishes and that the impacts of deep‐sea conditions such as low temperatures, high pressures, and low nutrient availability on swimming behaviour need to be considered independently of one another. The Indo-Pacific king mackerel, scientifically known as Scomberomorus guttatus, is a valued marine species that holds significant commercial importance in the Indo-Pacific region. However, the lack of genomic resources has hindered a comprehensive understanding of this species. In this study, we constructed a genome of Indo-Pacific king mackerel at the chromosome level using a combination of PacBio HiFi reads and a chromosome contact map (Hi-C). The resulting genome had high contig and scaffold N50 values of 8.84 Mb and 32.9 Mb, respectively. In the genome assembly, which is 797.66 Mb in size and consists of 24 chromosomes, we also identified 35.89% repetitive elements and predicted 25,886 protein-coding genes. Our study not only benefits to reveal the possible mechanism of adaptive evolution in this fish, but also offers insight for the future sustainable management of these valuable biological resources. We employed phylogenetic and biogeographic methods to assess the impact of the emergence of the Isthmus of Panama on the evolutionary history of snooks.Eastern tropical Pacific and western Atlantic Oceans.Bayesian methods were used for phylogenetic inference and divergence time estimation, incorporating the fossil record of Carangidae, Centropomidae, Istiophoriformes, Latidae and Sphyraenidae to establish a timeline using the methods of stratigraphic intervals for node calibration density specification. Biogeographic models were fitted to test the hypothesis that transisthmian vicariant events are coeval with the Isthmus closure. To estimate ancestral range probability and perform stochastic mapping, we utilised BioGeoBears and the parameters from the best‐fitting model. This allowed us to estimate the quantity and kind of biogeographical events.Our results suggest a sister relationship between Centropomidae and Sphyraenidae with a common ancestor that originated in the Upper Cretaceous (~78.51 Ma). The biogeographic model BAYAreaLIKE + j indicated speciation in sympatry and dispersal (founder effect) as the primary modes of speciation in the genus Centropomus. The dispersion in the family Centropomidae was estimated from the Tropical Eastern Pacific to the tropical western Atlantic since the Oligocene.The alignment of divergence times with ancestral species distributions suggests a possible synchrony between the current distribution in Centropomus species and the processes of the formation of the Isthmus of Panama during the Miocene. However, the evidence of only two transisthmic pair suggests that this event was not determinant in allopatric interbasin speciation. Animal gut microbiomes are critical to host physiology and fitness. The gut microbiomes of fishes—the most abundant and diverse vertebrate clade—have received little attention relative to other clades. Coral reef fishes, in particular, make up a wide range of evolutionary histories and feeding ecologies that are likely associated with gut microbiome diversity. The repeated evolution of herbivory in fishes and mammals also allows us to examine microbiome similarity in relationship to diet across the entire vertebrate tree of life. Here, we generate a large coral reef fish gut microbiome dataset (n = 499 samples, 19 species) and combine it with a diverse aggregation of public microbiome data (n = 447) to show that host diet drives significant convergence between coral reef fish and mammalian gut microbiomes. We demonstrate that this similarity is largely driven by carnivory and herbivory and that herbivorous and carnivorous hosts exhibit distinct microbial compositions across fish and mammals. We also show that fish and mammal gut microbiomes share prominent microbial taxa, including Ruminoccocus spp. and Akkermansia spp., and predicted metabolic pathways. Despite the major evolutionary and ecological differences between fishes and mammals, our results reveal that their gut microbiomes undergo similar dietary selective pressures. The viviparity-driven conflict hypothesis postulates that the evolution of matrotrophy (postfertilization maternal provisioning) will result in a shift from a pre- to postcopulatory mate choice and thus accelerate the evolution of postcopulatory reproductive isolation. Here, we perform artificial insemination experiments on Heterandria formosa , a matrotrophic poeciliid fish, to probe for evidence of postcopulatory female choice. We established laboratory populations from Wacissa River (WR) and Lake Jackson (LJ). The WR females normally produce larger offspring than the LJ females. We artificially inseminated females with sperm from each population or from both populations simultaneously. When LJ females were inseminated with sperm from WR and LJ males, they allocated fewer resources to WR-sired offspring than when they were inseminated with WR sperm alone. The LJ females carrying developing offspring sired by males from different populations were thus able to discriminate against non-resident males when allocating resources to developing young. The WR females, which normally produce larger offspring than LJ females, did not discriminate among males from different localities. Gill function in gas exchange and ion regulation has played key roles in the evolution of fishes. In this review, we summarize data from the fields of palaeontology, developmental biology and comparative physiology for when and how the gills first acquired these functions. Data from across disciplines strongly supports a stem vertebrate origin for gas exchange structures and function at the gills with the emergence of larger, more active fishes. However, the recent discovery of putative ionocytes in extant cephalochordates and hemichordates suggests that ion regulation at gills might have originated much earlier than gas exchange, perhaps in the ciliated pharyngeal arches in the last common ancestor of deuterostomes. We hypothesize that the ancestral form of ion regulation served a filter-feeding function in the ciliated pharyngeal arches, and was later coopted in vertebrates to regulate extracellular ion and acid–base balance. We propose that future research should explore ionocyte homology and function across extant deuterostomes to test this hypothesis and others in order to determine the ancestral origins of ion regulation in fish gills. The study investigated the effectiveness of three extruded feeds in the feed conversion index for the rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss Walbaum, 1792) reared at the Ain Aghbal fish farming station in Morocco. While the biochemical composition (moisture, protein, lipid, and carbohydrate percentages) and energy content (digestible and raw) of feeds A, B, and C are known, these factors alone are insufficient for selecting the optimal feed based on conversion index. The test was conducted over 222 days in tanks supplied with water from Oum Er-Rbia, flowing at 11.04m³/ h, with a water change every half an hour. Initial rearing conditions included a density of 1.58kg/ m³ and a volume-to-flow ratio of 1.05m³/ h. Fish were fed two to three times daily, depending on their growth stage. Results indicate that extruded feed B significantly improved the rainbow trout growth and achieved a conversion index not exceeding 0.9 for the trout weighing 1043g. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: Substantial progress has been made to map biodiversity and its drivers across the planet at multiple scales, yet studies that quantify the evolutionary processes that underpin this biodiversity, and test their drivers at multiple scales, are comparatively rare. Studying most fish species, we quantify rates of body size evolution to test the role of fundamental salinity habitats in shaping rates of evolution at multiple scales. We also determine how four additional factors shape evolutionary rates. Location: Global. Time Period: Extant species. Major Taxa Studied: Actinopterygii. Methods: In up to 1710 comparisons studying over 27,000 species, we compare rates of body size evolution among five salinity habits using 13 metrics. The comparisons span a molecular tree, 100 supertrees, and 10 scales of observation to test for robust patterns and reveal how patterns change with scale. Then, three approaches assess the role of three non‐salinity factors on rates, and an alternative habitat scheme tests if lakes influence evolutionary rates. Results: Rates of size evolution rarely differ consistently between salinity habitats; rate patterns are highly clade‐ and scale dependent. One exception is freshwater‐brackish fishes, which possess among the highest size rates of any salinity, showing higher rates than euryhaline fishes in most groupings studied at most scales, and versus marine, freshwater and marine–brackish habitats at numerous scales. Additionally, species richness had the greatest potential to predict phenotypic rates, followed by branch duration, then absolute values of body size. Lacustrine environments were consistently associated with high rates of size evolution. Main Conclusions: We reveal the rate patterns that underpin global body size diversity for fishes, identifying factors that play a limited role in shaping rates of size evolution, such as salinity, and those such as species richness, age and lake environments that consistently shape evolutionary rates across half of vertebrate diversity. Abyssal (3501–6500 m) and hadal (>6500 m) fauna evolve under harsh abiotic stresses, characterized by high hydrostatic pressure, darkness and food shortage, providing unique opportunities to investigate mechanisms underlying environmental adaptation. Genomes of several hadal species have recently been reported. However, the genetic adaptation of deep sea species across a broad spectrum of ocean depths has yet to be thoroughly investigated, due to the challenges imposed by collecting the deep sea species. To elucidate the correlation between genetic innovation and vertical distribution, we generated a chromosome‐level genome assembly of the macrourids Coryphaenoides yaquinae, which is widely distributed in the abyssal/hadal zone ranging from 3655 to 7259 m in depth. Genomic comparisons among shallow, abyssal and hadal‐living species identified idiosyncratic and convergent genetic alterations underlying the extraordinary adaptations of deep‐sea species including light perception, circadian regulation, hydrostatic pressure and hunger tolerance. The deep‐sea fishes (Coryphaenoides Sp. and Pseudoliparis swirei) venturing into various ocean depths independently have undergone convergent amino acid substitutions in multiple proteins such as rhodopsin 1, pancreatic and duodenal homeobox 1 and melanocortin 4 receptor which are known or verified in zebrafish to be related with vision adaptation and energy expenditure. Convergent evolution events were also identified in heat shock protein 90 beta family member 1 and valosin‐containing protein genes known to be related to hydrostatic pressure adaptation specifically in fishes found around the hadal range. Plagiognathops microlepis is an economic freshwater fish in the subfamily Xenocyprinae of Cyprinidae. It is widely distributed in the freshwater ecosystem of China, with moderate economic value and broad development prospects. However, the lack of genomic resources has limited our understanding on the genetic basis, phylogenetic status and adaptive evolution strategies of this fish. Here, we assembled a chromosome-level reference genome of P. microlepis by integrating Pacbio HiFi long-reads, Illumina short-reads and Hi-C sequencing data. The size of this genome is 1004.34 Mb with a contig N50 of 38.80 Mb. Using Hi-C sequencing data, 99.59% of the assembled sequences were further anchored to 24 chromosomes. A total of 578.91 Mb repeat sequences and 28,337 protein-coding genes were predicted in the current genome, of which, 26,929 genes were functionally annotated. This genome provides valuable information for investigating the phylogeny and evolutionary history of cyprinid fishes, as well as the genetic basis of adaptive strategies and special traits in P. microlepis. Simple Summary: As the most diverse vertebrate group, the unique adaptive expansion of euryhaline fishes is critical to understanding vertebrate evolution. In particular, the high degree of consistency of unique paired appendage structures across the extremely morphologically diverse group of teleost fishes has become a fascinating scientific question. Early teleost fishes provide a critical window into the study of this large taxon. Therefore, this study constructs high-quality chromosome-level genomes of Osteoglossiformes (Chitala ornata). It also explores the genomic features of early teleost fishes and traces the unique genetic basis of pectoral fin evolution in teleost fishes at the molecular level, which provides an important basis for understanding the evolution of the origin of early teleosts. Teleosts are the most prolific vertebrates, occupying the vast majority of aquatic environments, and their pectoral fins have undergone remarkable physiological transformations throughout their evolution. Studying early teleost fishes, such as those belonging to the Osteoglossiformes order, could offer crucial insights into the adaptive evolution of pectoral fins within this group. In this study, we have assembled a chromosomal-level genome for the Clown featherback (Chitala ornata), achieving the highest quality genome assembly for Osteoglossiformes to date, with a contig N50 of 32.78 Mb and a scaffold N50 of 40.73 Mb. By combining phylogenetic analysis, we determined that the Clown featherback diverged approximately 202 to 203 million years ago (Ma), aligning with continental separation events. Our analysis revealed the intriguing discovery that a unique deletion of regulatory elements is adjacent to the Gli3 gene, specifically in teleosts. This deletion might be tied to the specialized adaptation of their pectoral fins. Furthermore, our findings indicate that specific contractions and expansions of transposable elements (TEs) in teleosts, including the Clown featherback, could be connected to their adaptive evolution. Fishes represent the most diverse group of vertebrates, having inhabited the Earth for approximately 480 million years during which they evolved many specialised adaptations. One such adaptation is the evolution of a venom system, which has convergently arisen on at least 19 separate occasions across their evolutionary history. Venom evolution across fishes has taken two forms: chemical weaponisation of previously evolved defensive spines and the development of an oral venom system. Fish venoms have been shown to contain a myriad of toxin types, some of which may have pharmacological potential. However, due to the labile nature of many toxins, fish venom has not been extensively investigated compared to other venomous groups such as reptiles and arachnids. This review provides an updated scope of our current knowledge regarding the biology, biochemistry, and evolution of fish venom systems. The production of aquatic animals has more than doubled over the last 50 years and is anticipated to continually increase. While fish are recognized as a valuable and sustainable source of nutrition, particularly in the context of human population growth and climate change, the rapid expansion of aquaculture coincides with the emergence of highly pathogenic viruses that often spread globally through aquacultural practices. Here, we provide an overview of the fish virome and its relevance for disease emergence, with a focus on the insights gained through metagenomic sequencing, noting potential areas for future study. In particular, we describe the diversity and evolution of fish viruses, for which the majority have no known disease associations, and demonstrate how viruses emerge in fish populations, most notably at an expanding domestic-wild interface. We also show how wild fish are a powerful and tractable model system to study virus ecology and evolution more broadly and can be used to identify the major factors that shape vertebrate viromes. The construction of high-quality genomes is fundamental for molecular studies of species. Currently, there are no published genome sequences within the Uranoscopidae family, and research on the genomic characteristics of this family is lacking. In this study, genomic analyses of seven species from the Uranoscopidae family which captured from the southeastern coast of China were conducted using next-generation sequencing technology. The results revealed that the genomic characteristics of the seven species are relatively similar. The genome sizes of the seven Uranoscopidae species ranged from 536.00 Mb to 652.49 Mb, with repeat sequence proportions between 20.09% and 36.64%, and heterozygosity levels ranging from 0.41% to 0.88%. The assembled draft genomes exhibited GC contents of these species ranging from approximately 42.14% to 43.53%. Furthermore, the mitochondrial sequences for the seven species were assembled, with sizes ranging from 14,966 to 18,446 bp. The evolutionary relationships between different species were depicted through the mapping of conserved genes, whole-genome variances and mitochondrial genome sequences. Besides, the historical effective population sizes of all species experienced rapid expansion after the Last Interglacial Period, with three species undergoing bottleneck effects. In conclusion, this study provides a reference for the subsequent construction of high-quality genomes for species within the Uranoscopidae family and offers a rich data resource for further evolutionary research. Measurements of individual body length at different life stages are critical in understanding fish ecology and evolution. Such data can be obtained via back-calculation from measurements of fish scales or by using the size of the scale as a direct proxy for body length. Using data from Atlantic salmon, we test key assumptions associated with each approach and their implications for investigating how variation in growth earlier in life is associated with age at maturity. The scaling of scale size approximated isometry and was similar among individuals who matured at different ages—validating a key assumption of back-calculation. However, we observed that individuals genetically predisposed to delay maturation have smaller scales for their body size—challenging a key assumption of the "direct scale-size" approach. Depending on the method of body length estimation, the relationship between body length growth earlier in life and age at maturity was observed to differ. Thus, when using scale material to study the relationship between growth and maturation in salmon, we recommend back-calculation and an assumed allometric scaling coefficient. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Bryconops Kner, 1858, includes two well defined subgenera based on morphological evidence, with each containing at least one species (B. (Bryconops) caudomaculatus and B. (Creatochanes) melanurus) with a very wide distribution, within which regional populations present color variations. To test if phenotypic variation is related to cladogenetic events, we performed tests for phylogenetic independence and determined the strength of convergence for color characters in relation to water type, as the variation between clear, black and white waters is considered to be one of the major driving forces in the evolution of Amazonian fishes. Color characters for fins above the median line of the body were generally found to be independent from phylogeny and the Wheatsheaf test strongly supports convergence of the dorsal fin color between populations of species in the same type of water, with a similar trend suggested for the color of the dorsal lobe of the caudal fin. This means that simple color characters cannot necessarily be relied upon for taxonomic revisions of the genus as local phenotypic variants may represent environmentally determined plasticity or convergent evolution. Gut morphology frequently reflects the food organisms digest. Gizzards are organs of the gut found in archosaurs and fishes that mechanically reduce food to aid digestion. Gizzards are thought to compensate for edentulism and/or provide an advantage when consuming small, tough food items (e.g., phytoplankton and algae). It is unknown how widespread gizzards are in fishes and how similar these structures are among different lineages. Here, we investigate the distribution of gizzards across bony fishes to (1) survey different fishes for gizzard presence, (2) compare the histological structure of gizzards in three species, (3) estimate how often gizzards have evolved in fishes, and (4) explore whether anatomical and ecological traits like edentulism and microphagy predict gizzard presence. According to our analyses, gizzards are rare across bony fishes, evolving only six times in a broad taxonomic sampling of 51 species, and gizzard presence is not clearly correlated with factors like gut length or dentition. We find that gizzard morphology varies among the lineages where one is present, both macroscopically (presence of a crop) and microscopically (varying tissue types). We conclude that gizzards likely aid in the mechanical reduction of food in fishes that have lost an oral dentition in their evolutionary past; however, the relative scarcity of gizzards suggests they are just one of many possible solutions for processing tough, nutrient‐poor food items. Gizzards have long been present in the evolutionary history of fishes, can be found in a wide variety of marine and freshwater clades, and likely have been overlooked in many taxa. Pampus belongs to the Perciformes, Stromateoidei, and Stromateidae and are widely distributed throughout the Indian Ocean and the Western Pacific. In this study, we employed next-generation sequencing to generate comprehensive genomic data for Pampus punctatissimus and Pampus echinogaster and subsequently compared the obtained genomic information with the published data of Pampus argenteus. P. echinogaster was identified to be the largest genome size (602 Mb), heterozygosity (1.38%), and repetitive sequence ratio (33.06%), while similar genome sizes between P. punctatissimus (540 Mb) and P. argenteus (550 Mb) were observed. A total of 402,921 and 628,298 SSRs were identified for P. punctatissimus and P. echinogaster, respectively. Additionally, 1,876, 638, and 394 single-copy homologous genes were identified from P. punctatissimus, P. echinogaster, and P. argenteus, respectively. The KEGG enrichment results of the unique single-copy genes to the three species were significantly different in genetic information processing, protein processing, and metabolic functions. The complete mitochondrial genomes of P. punctatissimus and P. echinogaster were successfully assembled, and the resulting phylogenetic relationships align with the currently reported taxonomic status of species in the Stromateoidei. Additionally, population size analysis using PSMC revealed that P. punctatissimus experienced one bottleneck effect, while P. echinogaster underwent two bottleneck events during the Pleistocene Glacial Epoch. In this work, we present a mathematical fishery model, which is a set of five ordinary differential equations governing the fish stock. The first two ODEs correspond to the evolution of two populations moving and growing between two areas, and exploited by two fishing fleets represented by their fishing efforts. The evolution of the fishing efforts are represented by two other ODEs. The catch function is assumed to be non-linear with a price variation. The evolution of the price with respect to time is represented in the fifth equation by the difference between supply (which is the catch, in our case) and demand (which corresponds to a non-linear demand function). We suppose that the growth of fish and the evolution of fishing efforts follow a slow time scale, while the fish migration, the vessels movement, and the price variation occur at a fast time scale. Then, we use an aggregation of variables method to obtain what we call "a reduced model". The aggregated fishery model is analyzed mathematically, which shows that two main cases can occur under some conditions: A fish extinction case and a sustainable one. Finally, we prove that we can switch from an undesirable case to a desirable one by controlling the catch part in the model. Some numerical simulations are also given in this work. Research into how fish and other aquatic organisms propel themselves offers valuable natural references for enhancing technology related to underwater devices like vehicles, propellers, and biomimetic robotics. Additionally, such research provides insights into fish evolution and ecological dynamics. This work carried out a numerical investigation of the most relevant dimensionless parameters in a fish swimming environment (Reynolds R e , Strouhal S t , and S l i p numbers) to provide valuable knowledge in terms of biomechanics behavior. Thus, a three-dimensional numerical study of the fish-like lambari, a BCF swimmer with carangiform kinematics, was conducted using the URANS approach with the k- ω -SST transition turbulence closure model in the OpenFOAM software. In this study, we initially reported the equilibrium Strouhal number, which is represented by S t ∗ , and its dependence on the Reynolds number, denoted as R e . This was performed following a power–law relationship of S t ∝ R e (− α) . We also conducted a comprehensive analysis of the hydrodynamic forces and the effect of body undulation in fish on the production of swimming drag and thrust. Additionally, we computed propulsive and quasi-propulsive efficiencies, as well as examined the influence of the Reynolds number and S l i p number on fish performance. Finally, we performed a vortex dynamics analysis, in which different wake configurations were revealed under variations of the dimensionless parameters S t , R e , and S l i p . The pineal gland has evolved from a photoreceptive organ in fish to a neuroendocrine organ in mammals. This study integrated multiple daytime single‐cell RNA‐seq datasets from the pineal glands of zebrafish, rats, and monkeys, providing a detailed examination of the evolutionary transition at single‐cell resolution. We identified key factors responsible for the anatomical and functional transformation of the pineal gland. We retrieved and integrated daytime single‐cell transcriptomic datasets from the pineal glands of zebrafish, rats, and monkeys, resulting in a total of 22 431 cells after rigorous quality filtering. Comparative analysis was then conducted to elucidate the evolution of pineal cells, their photosensitivity, their role in melatonin production, and the signaling processes within the glands of these species. Our analysis identified distinct cellular compositions of the pineal gland in zebrafish, rats, and monkeys. Zebrafish photoreceptors exhibited comprehensive phototransduction gene expression, while specific genes, including transducin (Gngt1, Gnb3, and Gngt2) and phosducin (Pdc), were consistently present in mammalian pinealocytes. We found transcriptional similarities between the pineal gland and retina, underscoring shared evolutionary and functional pathways. Zebrafish displayed unique light‐responsive circadian gene activity compared to rats and monkeys. Key ligand‐receptor interactions were identified, especially involving MDK and PTN, influencing melatonin synthesis across species. Furthermore, we observed species‐specific GPCR (G protein‐coupled receptors) expressions related to melatonin synthesis and their alignment with retinal expressions. Our findings also highlighted specific transcription factors (TFs) and regulatory networks associated with pineal gland evolution and function. Our study provides a detailed analysis of the pineal gland's evolution from fish to mammals. We identified key transcriptional changes and controls that highlight the gland's functional diversity. Notably, we found significant ligand‐receptor interactions influencing melatonin synthesis and demonstrated parallels between pineal and retinal expressions. Silurus lanzhouensis is a large endemic fish exclusively found in the middle and upper reaches of China's Yellow River, with a restricted distribution range and a small population size and is listed as an endangered species. To investigate the potential genetic factors contributing to the observed decrease in the population of S. lanzhouensis, we have successfully assembled the first chromosome-level genome of S. lanzhouensis. This genome comprises a total of 30 chromosomes, with a size of 794.43 Mb, and 23,093 protein-coding genes. Comparative genomics analysis reveals that the genetic relationship between S. lanzhouensis and S. meridionalis Chen is the closest, and their common ancestor experienced two rounds of whole genome duplication (WGD) before diverging. Notably, amino acid metabolism-related pathways are enriched in the unique S. lanzhouensis gene family. In addition, we observed that the chemokine receptor and scavenger receptor gene families contracted in S. lanzhouensis, which may be associated with its diminished immune response. The research was conducted to determine the relationship between water quality and body length of arowana fish by measuring several water parameters including temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen and ammonia. In relation to length growth, calculations on SR, SGR are also carried out using ANNOVA. Direct laboratory scale observations were carried out by providing different feeds, including bloodworms, maggot, crickets and live fish with the water source for cultivation activities being well water. The results of observations in the field show that the growth rate of fish in length is influenced by the type of feed given. Giving bloodworms has the most effective value, next to live fish, maggots and crickets. This type of feed also affects the quality of the water used. To maintain success in ornamental fish cultivation, it is recommended to use water efficiently through integrated fish cultivation. In this study, the mitochondrial genome was sequenced in a new commercial species, spotted knifejaw (O. punctatus), using next-generation sequencing and PCR-based methods. The overall length of the female O. punctatus mitochondrial genome was 16,508 bp. It contained 13 PCGs, 2 r-RNA genes, 22 t-RNA genes, and a displacement loop locus (a control region). The total nucleotide composition was 28.75% A, 25.69% T, 29.70% C, and 15.86% G, with a total A + T content of 54.44%. The results demonstrated that the mitochondrial genome of O. punctatus has a high sequence identity with that of another species of Perciformes. Human activities have often altered sediment dynamics in rivers, leading to aquatic habitat degradation. The dominant paradigm in fish–sediment interactions focuses on excessive fine sediments as indicators of habitat and water quality degradation. In contrast, geomorphologists have provided frameworks linking altered sediment dynamics to much broader and more complex changes to channel morphology and stream habitats across spatial scales.In this paper we use an interdisciplinary approach with historical and contemporary channel morphology and fish community datasets to examine how altered sediment dynamics have affected stream fish community evolution in the Bayou Pierre, Mississippi, U.S.A.Erosional process regimes have advanced upstream consistent with models of knickpoint propagation and channel evolution, leaving most of the catchment in a state of increased sediment transport and local sediment deficits. Fish communities in modern samples have less α and β diversity and fewer habitat specialist taxa than in historical samples.Whole‐community analysis via non‐metric multidimensional scaling found a strong gradient of homogenisation towards a fauna comprised of small‐bodied taxa adapted to large rivers.Comparisons of community and geomorphic change on this gradient found that reaches that transitioned between process regimes had more community change, and that local habitat factors relating to advanced channel evolution were strongly positively related to total community change.These results demonstrate that a catchment‐scale geomorphic analysis provided a strong tool for understanding fish community change on a decadal scale. Our findings further demonstrate concordant ecological responses to a complex sequence of disturbances and suggest that a broader view of sediment dynamics offers a rich toolkit for ecological analyses. Hemoglobin (Hb) usually comprises two α and two β subunits, forming a tetramer responsible for oxygen transportation and storage. Few studies have elucidated fish hemoglobin immune functions. Megalobrama amblycephala is a freshwater-cultured fish prevalent in China. We identified two M. amblycephala hemoglobin subunits and analyzed their expression patterns and antibacterial activities. The respective full-length cDNA sequences of the M. amblycephala Hb α (MaHbα) and β (MaHbβ) subunits were 588 and 603 bp, encoding 143 and 148 amino acids. MaHbα and MaHbβ were highly homologous to hemoglobins from other fish, displaying typical globin-like domains, most heme-binding sites, and tetramer interface regions highly conserved in teleosts. In phylogenetic analyses, the hemoglobin genes from M. amblycephala and other cypriniformes clustered into one branch, and those from other fishes and mammals clustered into other branches, revealing fish hemoglobin conservation. These M. amblycephala Hb subunits exhibit different expression patterns in various tissues and during development. MaHbα is mainly expressed in the blood and brain, while MaHbβ gene expression is highest in the muscle. MaHbα expression was detectable and abundant post-fertilization, with levels fluctuating during the developmental stages. MaHbβ expression began at 3 dph and gradually increased. Expression of both M. amblycephala Hb subunits was down-regulated in most examined tissues and time points post-Aeromonas hydrophila infection, which might be due to red blood cell (RBC) and hematopoietic organ damage. Synthetic MaHbα and MaHbβ peptides showed excellent antimicrobial activities, which could inhibit survival and growth in five aquatic pathogens. Two M. amblycephala hemoglobin subunits were identified, and their expression patterns and antibacterial activities were analyzed, thereby providing a basis for the understanding of evolution and functions of fish hemoglobins. Hydrogen sulfide is a toxic gas that disrupts numerous biological processes, including energy production in the mitochondria, yet fish in the Poecilia mexicana species complex have independently evolved sulfide tolerance several times. Despite clear evidence for convergence at the phenotypic level in these fishes, it is unclear if the repeated evolution of hydrogen sulfide tolerance is the result of similar genomic changes. To address this gap, we used a targeted capture approach to sequence genes associated with sulfide processes and toxicity from five sulfidic and five nonsulfidic populations in the species complex. By comparing sequence variation in candidate genes to a reference set, we identified similar population structure and differentiation, suggesting that patterns of variation in most genes associated with sulfide processes and toxicity are due to demographic history and not selection. But the presence of tree discordance for a subset of genes suggests that several loci are evolving divergently between ecotypes. We identified two differentiation outlier genes that are associated with sulfide detoxification in the mitochondria that have signatures of selection in all five sulfidic populations. Further investigation into these regions identified long, shared haplotypes among sulfidic populations. Together, these results reveal that selection on standing genetic variation in putatively adaptive genes may be driving phenotypic convergence in this species complex. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Angling is an immensely significant leisure practice that provides an important window onto the variable and selective ways humans value animals, and on how humans and animals variously affect each other's lives. Through a novel ethnography of coarse angling practice, this paper focuses on the simultaneity of coarse fish as victims of human play and as biosocial actors with considerable affective power above and below water. We posit that paying close attention to the embodied and performative contexts of catching and caring for fish for leisure reveals deeply rooted passions and paradoxes that raise questions not only about angling but about the stark injustices within the spectrum of human-fish encounters. We conclude by asking whether angling should be consigned to history or whether anglers are important socio-ecological practitioners that could and should do more to challenge the cruelties and injustices within human-fish relations. Fins are major functional appendages of fish that have been repeatedly modified in different lineages. To search for genomic changes underlying natural fin diversity, we compared the genomes of 36 percomorph fish species that span over 100 million years of evolution and either have complete or reduced pelvic and caudal fins. We identify 1,614 genomic regions that are well-conserved in fin-complete species but missing from multiple fin-reduced lineages. Recurrent deletions of conserved sequences in wild fin-reduced species are enriched for functions related to appendage development, suggesting that convergent fin reduction at the organismal level is associated with repeated genomic deletions near fin-appendage development genes. We used sequencing and functional enhancer assays to confirm that PelA , a Pitx1 enhancer previously linked to recurrent pelvic loss in sticklebacks, has also been independently deleted and may have contributed to the fin morphology in distantly related pelvic-reduced species. We also identify a novel enhancer that is conserved in the majority of percomorphs, drives caudal fin expression in transgenic stickleback, is missing in tetraodontiform, syngnathid, and synbranchid species with caudal fin reduction, and alters caudal fin development when targeted by genome editing. Our study illustrates a broadly applicable strategy for mapping phenotypes to genotypes across a tree of vertebrate species and highlights notable new examples of regulatory genomic hotspots that have been used to evolve recurrent phenotypes across 100 million years of fish evolution. Fresh fish is a perishable food in which chemical (namely oxidation) and microbiological degradation result in undesirable odor. Non-processed fish (i.e., raw fish) is increasingly commercialized in packaging systems which are convenient for its retailing and/or which can promote an extension of its shelf-life. Compared to fish sent to its retail unpackaged, fish packaging results in a modification of the gaseous composition of the atmosphere surrounding it. These modifications of atmosphere composition may affect both chemical and microbiological degradation pathways of fish constituents and thereby the volatile organic compounds produced. In addition to monitoring Total Volatile Basic Nitrogen (TVB-N), which is a common indicator to estimate non-processed fish freshness, analytical techniques such as gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry or techniques referred to as "electronic nose" allow either the identification of the entire set of these volatile compounds (the volatilome) and/or to selectively monitor some of them, respectively. Interestingly, monitoring these volatile organic compounds along fish storage might allow the identification of early-stage markers of fish alteration. In this context, to provide relevant information for the identification of volatile markers of non-processed packaged fish quality evolution during its storage, the following items have been successively reviewed: (1) inner atmosphere gaseous composition and evolution as a function of fish packaging systems; (2) fish constituents degradation pathways and analytical methods to monitor fish degradation with a focus on volatilome analysis; and (3) the effect of different factors affecting fish preservation (temperature, inner atmosphere composition, application of hurdle technology) on volatilome composition. Vertebrate dentitions are often collapsed into a few discrete categories, obscuring both potentially important functional differences between them and insight into their evolution. The terms homodonty and heterodonty typically conflate tooth morphology with tooth function, and require context-dependent subcategories to take on any specific meaning. Qualifiers like incipient, transient, or phylogenetic homodonty attempt to provide a more rigorous definition but instead highlight the difficulties in categorizing dentitions. To address these issues, we recently proposed a method for quantifying the function of dental batteries based on the estimated stress of each tooth (inferred using surface area) standardized for jaw out-lever (inferred using tooth position). This method reveals a homodonty–heterodonty functional continuum where small and large teeth work together to transmit forces to a prey item. Morphological homodonty or heterodonty refers to morphology, whereas functional homodonty or heterodonty refers to transmission of stress. In this study, we use Halichoeres wrasses to explore how a functional continuum can be used in phylogenetic analyses by generating two continuous metrics from the functional homodonty–heterodonty continuum. Here we show that functionally heterodont teeth have evolved at least 3 times in Halichoeres wrasses. There are more functionally heterodont teeth on upper jaws than on lower jaws, but functionally heterodont teeth on the lower jaws bear significantly more stress. These nuances, which have functional consequences, would be missed by binning entire dentitions into discrete categories. This analysis points out areas worth taking a closer look at from a mechanical and developmental point of view with respect to the distribution and type of heterodonty seen in different jaws and different areas of jaws. These data, on a small group of wrasses, suggest continuous dental variables can be a rich source of insight into the evolution of fish feeding mechanisms across a wider variety of species. The paper presents the evolution of fish production from commercial fishing in the Danube River during 2015-2021 and is based on the analysis of statistical data collected by the National Agency for Fisheries and Aquaculture as part of the data collection program. Production data were collected annually by authorized commercial fishermen, quantitatively and by species. During the analysed period, there is a quantitative decrease in the production of wild carp and raptors, and significant increases in catches of Asian carp species. Catches of Danube record annual fluctuations with decreasing trends in the analysed period. At the end, the causes of the catches decrease of commercial fishing are analysed and the fisheries management measures that must be taken, based on ecosystem principles, to protect and restore the declining fish populations in the Danube River. According of their crucial role in Earth's evolutionary history, prehistoric fish, one of the oldest and most diversified groups of vertebrates, have piqued the interest of both scientists and fans. This interdisciplinary investigation digs into the intriguing field of ancient fish taxonomy, where the marriage of fossil records and genetic information reveals the puzzling story of their origin. The morphology, anatomy, and ecological surroundings of prehistoric fish may be well understood because of the fossil records that have been preserved in stone for hundreds of millions of years. Fossils help us follow the evolution of these aquatic pioneers across geological eras, from the armored ostracoderms of the Paleozoic through the emergence of bony fish. On the other hand, molecular biology provides a modern viewpoint on the evolution of fish. We identify the genetic foundations that connect prehistoric and contemporary fish by investigating DNA, proteins, and genetic markers. In essence, research into the taxonomy of prehistoric fish is a monument to human curiosity and the never-ending quest for knowledge. Abstract Comparative studies of cancer‐related genes not only provide novel information about their evolution and function but also an understanding of cancer as a driving force in biological systems and species’ life histories. So far, these studies have focused on mammals. Here, we provide the first comparative study of cancer‐related gene copy number variation in fish. Fishes are a paraphyletic group whose last common ancestor is also an ancestor of the tetrapods, and accordingly, their tumour suppression mechanisms should include most of the mammalian mechanisms and also reveal novel (but potentially phylogenetically older) previously undetected mechanisms. We have matched the sequenced genomes of 65 fish species from the Ensemble database with the cancer gene information from the COSMIC database. By calculating the number of gene copies across species using the Ensembl CAFE data (providing species trees for gene copy number counts), we used a less resource‐demanding method for homolog identification. Our analysis demonstrates a masked relationship between cancer‐related gene copy number variation (CNV) and maximum lifespan in fish species, suggesting that a higher number of copies of tumour suppressor genes lengthens and the number of copies of oncogenes shortens lifespan. Based on the positive correlation between the number of copies of tumour suppressors and oncogenes, we show which species have more tumour suppressors in relation to oncogenes. It could be suggested that these species have stronger genetic defences against oncogenic processes. Fish studies could be a largely unexplored treasure trove for understanding the evolution and ecology of cancer, providing novel insights into the study of cancer and tumour suppression, in addition to fish evolution, life‐history trade‐offs, and ecology.

Numerous novel adaptations characterise the radiation of notothenioids, the dominant fish group in the freezing seas of the Southern Ocean. To improve understanding of the evolution of this iconic fish group, here we generate and analyse new genome assemblies for 24 species covering all major subgroups of the radiation, including five long-read assemblies. We present a new estimate for the onset of the radiation at 10.7 million years ago, based on a time-calibrated phylogeny derived from genome-wide sequence data. We identify a two-fold variation in genome size, driven by expansion of multiple transposable element families, and use the long-read data to reconstruct two evolutionarily important, highly repetitive gene family loci. First, we present the most complete reconstruction to date of the antifreeze glycoprotein gene family, whose emergence enabled survival in sub-zero temperatures, showing the expansion of the antifreeze gene locus from the ancestral to the derived state. Second, we trace the loss of haemoglobin genes in icefishes, the only vertebrates lacking functional haemoglobins, through complete reconstruction of the two haemoglobin gene clusters across notothenioid families. Both the haemoglobin and antifreeze genomic loci are characterised by multiple transposon expansions that may have driven the evolutionary history of these genes. The notothenioid radiation is a remarkable group of fish adapted to life in the icy waters of the Southern Ocean. Host-microbiota interactions play critical roles in host development, immunity, metabolism, and behavior. However, information regarding host-microbiota interactions is limited in fishes due to their complex living environment. In the present study, an allodiploid hybrid fish derived from herbivorous Megalobrama amblycephala (♀) × carnivorous Culter alburnus (♂) was used to investigate the successional changes of the microbial communities and host-microbiota interactions during herbivorous and carnivorous dietary adaptations. The growth level was not significantly different in any developmental stage between the two diet groups of fish. The diversity and composition of the dominant microbial communities showed similar successional patterns in the early developmental stages, but significantly changed during the two dietary adaptations. A large number of bacterial communities coexisted in all developmental stages, whereas the abundance of some genera associated with metabolism, including Acinetobacter, Gemmobacter, Microbacterium, Vibrio, and Aeromonas, was higher in either diet groups of fish. Moreover, the abundance of phylum Firmicutes, Actinobacteria, and Chloroflexi was positively correlated with the host growth level. In addition, Spearman's correlation analysis revealed that the differentially expressed homologous genes in the intestine associated with cell growth, immunity, and metabolism were related to the dominant gut microbiota. Our results present evidence that host genetics-gut microbiota interactions contribute to dietary adaptation in hybrid fish, which also provides basic data for understanding the diversity of dietary adaptations and evolution in fish. Leuciscus waleckii is widely distributed in Northeast Asia and has high economic value. The population in Lake Dali Nur can adapt to extremely alkaline–saline water with bicarbonate over 50 mmol/L (pH 9.6), thus providing an exceptional model for exploring the mechanisms of adaptive evolution under extreme alkaline environments. Here, we assembled a high-quality chromosome-level reference genome for L. waleckii from Lake Dali Nur. Based on the resequencing of 85 individuals from divergent populations, the historical population size of L. waleckii in Lake Dali Nur dramatically expanded in a thousand years approximately 13,000 years ago and experienced a cliff recession in the process of adapting to the alkaline environment of Lake Dali Nur approximately 6,000 years ago. Genome scans between freshwater and alkaline populations further revealed the significant selective sweep regions from Lake Dali Nur, which harbor a set of candidate genes involved in hypoxia tolerance, ion transport, acid–base regulation, and nitrogen metabolism. 5 alkali population–specific nonsynonymous mutations were identified in CA15 gene copies. In addition, two sites with convergent amino acid mutation were detected in the RHCG-a gene among several alkali environment–adapted Cypriniformes fish. David Lloyd George Noakes (1942–2020) was a remarkable man. He was a friend, mentor, professor, editor, and writer. Herein, his peer-reviewed and edited publications are compiled and synthesized to demonstrate his academic contributions. David generated more than 213 publications including nine books, 29 book sections, and 175 peer-reviewed articles between 1973 and 2021. His research was focused in three main themes: (1) behaviour, ecology, and evolution of fishes; (2) behaviour as it influences fish populations; and (3) native salmonine conservation. Within these themes, 38 species in 16 families and three classes were studied, Salmonidae being the most prevalent taxon representing nearly 60% of published articles. He cared deeply about people, history, and tradition; he led or contributed to 12 tributes to the foremothers and fathers of fish biology. David was collaborative. He was remarkable at facilitating connections and establishing strong and lasting relationships. His network consisted of at least 262 unique co-authors spanning 17 countries and representing 110 unique partner institutions. This bibliographic synthesis is intended to form the basis for the many detailed investigations of notable achievements, advancement of fields, and societal impacts within this issue that together honour the loss of a giant in our field. Evolution in the chronic cold of the Southern Ocean has had a profound influence on the physiology of cryonotothenioid fishes. However, the suite of genetic changes underlying the physiological gains and losses in these fishes is still poorly surveyed. By identifying the genomic signatures of selection, this study aims to identify the functional classes of genes that have been changed following two major physiological transitions: the onset of freezing temperatures and the loss of hemoproteins. Looking at the changes that followed the onset of freezing temperatures, positive selective pressure was found among a set of broadly acting gene regulatory factors, suggesting a route through which cryonotothenioid gene expression has been retooled for life in the cold. Further, genes related to the cell cycle and cellular adhesion were found under positive selection suggesting that both present key challenges to life in freezing waters. By contrast, genes showing signatures of the relaxation of selective pressure showed a narrower biological impact, acting on genes related to mitochondrial function. Finally, although chronic cold-water temperatures appear correlated with substantial genetic change, the loss of hemoproteins resulted in little observable change in protein-coding genes relative to their red-blooded relatives. Combined, the influence of positive and relaxed selection shows that long-term exposure to cold has led to profound changes in cryonotothenioid genomes that may make it challenging for them to adapt to a rapidly changing climate. Simple Summary: It is generally known that the order of mitochondrial genes is highly conserved, but to date, along with the gradual increase of teleostean mtDNA sequences in the GenBank database, the gene rearrangement events have been identified in all the published complete mitogenomes of Ophichthidae species. This amusing finding makes it necessary to carry out studies on mitogenome characteristics and phylogenetic evolution of this fish group. Here, we chose Ophichthus evermanni and O. erabo as representatives, and obtained the whole mtDNA sequences using the Illumina high-throughput sequencing technology. The novel gene rearrangement and phylogenetic relationships indicated that Ophichthidae might be a monophyletic group and formed a sister group with Muraenesocidae. The family Ophichthidae has the largest number and the most various species (about 359 valid species) in the order Anguilliformes worldwide. Both morphological and molecular characteristics have been used to assess their taxonomic status. However, due to the ambiguous morphological features, molecular data such as mitochondrial DNA sequences have been implemented for the correct identification and classification of these fishes. In this study, the gene arrangement and structure characteristics of two Ophichthidae mitochondrial genomes were investigated for the first time. The total mitogenome lengths of O. evermanni and O. erabo were 17,759 bp and 17,856 bp, respectively. Comparing with the ancestral mitochondrial gene order, the irregular gene rearrangement happened between ND6 and tRNA-Pro (P) genes with another similar control region emerging between tRNA-Thr (T) and ND6 genes, which could be explained by the tandem duplication and random loss (TDRL) model appropriately. ML phylogenetic tree demonstrated that the family Ophichthidae was monophyletic origin, but genus Ophichthus might be polyphyletic because of the confused cluster relationships among different species. Sexual size dimorphism (SSD) is caused by differences in selection pressures and life‐history trade‐offs faced by males and females. Proximate causes of SSD may involve sex‐specific mortality, energy acquisition, and energy expenditure for maintenance, reproductive tissues, and reproductive behavior. Using a quantitative, individual‐based, eco‐genetic model parameterized for North Sea plaice, we explore the importance of these mechanisms for female‐biased SSD, under which males are smaller and reach sexual maturity earlier than females (common among fish, but also arising in arthropods and mammals). We consider two mechanisms potentially serving as ultimate causes: (a) Male investments in male reproductive behavior might evolve to detract energy resources that would otherwise be available for somatic growth, and (b) diminishing returns on male reproductive investments might evolve to reduce energy acquisition. In general, both of these can bring about smaller male body sizes. We report the following findings. First, higher investments in male reproductive behavior alone cannot explain the North Sea plaice SSD. This is because such higher reproductive investments require increased energy acquisition, which would cause a delay in maturation, leading to male‐biased SSD contrary to observations. When accounting for the observed differential (lower) male mortality, maturation is postponed even further, leading to even larger males. Second, diminishing returns on male reproductive investments alone can qualitatively account for the North Sea plaice SSD, even though the quantitative match is imperfect. Third, both mechanisms can be reconciled with, and thus provide a mechanistic basis for, the previously advanced Ghiselin–Reiss hypothesis, according to which smaller males will evolve if their reproductive success is dominated by scramble competition for fertilizing females, as males would consequently invest more in reproduction than growth, potentially implying lower survival rates, and thus relaxing male–male competition. Fourth, a good quantitative fit with the North Sea plaice SSD is achieved by combining both mechanisms while accounting for sex‐specific costs males incur during their spawning season. Snakehead fishes of the family Channidae are obligatory air-breathers freshwater predators, the vast majority of which belong to the genus Channa Scopoli, 1777. Channa species are characterized by high karyotypic diversity due to various types of chromosomal rearrangements. It is assumed that, in addition to the lifestyle, fragmentation and isolation of snakehead populations contribute to an increase in karyotypic diversity. However, the chromosome complements of many isolated populations of widespread Channa species remain unknown, and the direction of karyotype transformations is poorly understood. This paper describes the previously unstudied karyotypes of Channa lucius (Cuvier, 1831) and C. striata (Bloch, 1793) from Phu Quoc Island and analyzes the trends of karyotypic evolution in the genus Channa. In C. lucius, the karyotypes are differed in the number of chromosome arms (2n = 48, NF = 50 and 51), while in C. striata, the karyotypes are differed in the diploid chromosome number (2n = 44 and 43, NF = 48). A comparative cytogenetic analysis showed that the main trend of karyotypic evolution of Channa species is associated with a decrease in the number of chromosomes and an increase in the number of chromosome arms, mainly due to fusions and pericentric inversions. The data obtained support the assumption that fragmentation and isolation of populations, especially of continental islands, contribute to the karyotypic diversification of snakeheads and are of interest for further cytogenetic studies of Channidae. Jibei Island, in Taiwan’s Penghu area, is famous for its abundance of stone fish weirs (SFWs). This research used historical charts, archives, and high-resolution orthophoto images for the SFWs mapping and spatial pattern analysis exercise. We found that the birthplace of SFWs was in the southern part of Jibei Port and Mudou Isle. In the early stage of the Japanese governing period (1895–1945), SFWs were mainly constructed in the North and North-West parts of the Jibel Isle and gradually migrated toward the east and north. In the middle to late Japanese governing period, the SFWs’ construction hot zone was in the South-West and South-East sides of the Jibei Isle. Understanding the SFW’s evolution in the Jibel area is critical for local and regional cultural history, offering insights into land use and fish culture in Penghu and shedding light on ancient fishing culture in the broader pan-Pacific region. The Great Barrier Reef (GBR)—the largest coral reef ecosystem in the world—supports over 1,200 fish species with some of the highest population densities and diversities observed in vertebrates, offering a high potential for virus transmission among species. As such, the GBR represents an exceptional natural ecosystem to determine the impact of host community diversity on virus evolution and emergence. In recent decades, the GBR has also experienced significant threats of extinction, making it one of the most vulnerable ecosystems on the planet. Despite the global importance of the GBR, our understanding of virus diversity and connectivity in tropical reef fishes remains poor. Here, we employed metatranscriptomic sequencing to reveal the viromes of sixty-one reef fish species. This identified transcripts representing 132 putative viral sequences, 38 of which exhibited strong phylogenetic relationships with known vertebrate-associated viral genera, including a novel Santee-Cooper ranavirus (Iridoviridae). We found little evidence for virus transmission between fish species living within a very restricted geographical space—a 100-m2 coral reef ecosystem—suggesting that there might be important host barriers to successful cross-species transmission despite regular exposure. We also identified differences in virome composition among reef fish families, such that cryptobenthic reef fishes—characterized by small body sizes and short life spans—exhibited greater virome richness compared to large reef fishes. This study suggests that there are important barriers to cross-species virus transmission and that successful emergence in a reef fish community likely requires active host adaptation, even among closely related host species.
