Purpose: The purpose of this review was to evaluate the effects of physical activity on children's free recall, cued recall, and recognition episodic memory and to explore potential moderating factors. Methods: The following databases were searched: PubMed, ERIC, APA Psych Info, CINHAL, SPORTDiscus, and Google Scholar. Studies were included if: (1) participants were aged 4–18 years, (2) participants were typically developed, (3) participants were randomized to groups, (4) interventions employed gross movements, (5) sedentary group was used for control, (6) memory tests were quantitative, and (7) employed acute or chronic intervention. Results: 14 studies met inclusion criteria resulting in the analysis of data from 7 free recall, 7 cued recall, and 8 recognition memory tests. Physical activity was found to have a positive influence on tests free (g = 0.56), cued recall (g = 0.67), and no influence on tests of recognition (g = 0.06). While some moderator analyses were significant, the authors do not consider these results to be meaningful in application. Conclusions: The effects of acute and chronic physical activity enhance specific aspects of long-term episodic memory. People exhibit an extraordinary capacity to adjust to stressful situations. Here, we argue that the acute stress response is a major driving force behind this adaptive process. In addition to immediately freeing energy reserves, facilitating a rapid and robust neurocognitive response, and helping to reinstate homeostasis, the stress response also critically regulates neuroplasticity. Therefore, understanding the healthy acute stress response is crucial for understanding stress resilience—the maintenance or rapid recovery of mental health during and after times of adversity. Contemporary resilience research differentiates between resilience factors and resilience mechanisms. Resilience factors refer to a broad array of social, psychological, or biological variables that are stable but potentially malleable and predict resilient outcomes. In contrast, resilience mechanisms refer to proximate mechanisms activated during acute stress that enable individuals to effectively navigate immediate challenges. In this article, we review literature related to how neurotransmitter and hormonal changes during acute stress regulate the activation of resilience mechanisms. We integrate literature on the timing-dependent and neuromodulator-specific regulation of neurocognition, episodic memory, and behavioral and motivational control, highlighting the distinct and often synergistic roles of catecholamines (dopamine and norepinephrine) and glucocorticoids. We conclude that stress resilience is bolstered by improved future predictions and the success-based reinforcement of effective coping strategies during acute stress. The resulting generalized memories of success, controllability, and safety constitute beneficial plasticity that lastingly improves self-control under stress. Extinction of traumatic memory, a primary treatment approach (termed exposure therapy) in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), occurs through relearning and may be subserved at the molecular level by long-term potentiation of relevant circuits. In parallel, repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is thought to work through long-term potentiation–like mechanisms and may provide a novel, safe, and effective treatment for PTSD. In a recent failed randomized controlled trial we emphasized the necessity of correctly identifying cortical targets, the directionality of TMS protocols, and the role of memory activation. Here, we provide a systematic review of TMS for PTSD to further identify how, where, and when TMS treatment should be delivered to alleviate PTSD symptoms. We conducted a systematic review of the literature by searching for repetitive TMS clinical trials involving patients with PTSD and outcomes. We searched MEDLINE through October 25, 2023, for "TMS and PTSD" and "transcranial magnetic stimulation and posttraumatic stress disorder." Thirty-one publications met our inclusion criteria (k = 17 randomized controlled trials, k = 14 open label). Randomized controlled trial protocols were varied in terms of TMS protocols, cortical TMS targets, and memory activation protocols. There was no clear superiority of low-frequency (k = 5) versus high-frequency (k = 6) protocols or by stimulation location. Memory provocation or exposure protocols (k = 7) appear to enhance response. Overall, TMS appears to be effective in treating PTSD symptoms across a variety of TMS frequencies, hemispheric target differences, and exposure protocols. Disparate protocols may be conceptually harmonized when viewed as potentiating proposed anxiolytic networks or suppressing anxiogenic networks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Episodic memory (EM) is the content of our personal narratives and is foundational to social communication. Research has repeatedly demonstrated EM challenges in individuals with autism. Meanwhile, it is well documented that a caregiver conversational style known as elaborative reminiscing facilitates EM development in children without autism. This study evaluated the efficacy and social validity of a novel elaborative reminiscing caregiver-mediated intervention to support EM in an 8-year-old girl with autism. Using a mixed-methods approach, we first examined qualitative and quantitative data to evaluate social validity. The caregiver's subjective impressions of the goals, procedures, and outcomes suggested that the parent training had a high degree of social validity. Second, we evaluated child performance on standard assessments of EM. EM performance measures demonstrated improvements in EM following intervention, suggesting that the caregiver's subjective impressions of efficacy were rooted in genuine advancements in her child's EM abilities. For centuries, international reparations were commonly exacted as a form of victor's justice after war. Following World War II, however, the bitter legacy of the Treaty of Versailles and West Germany's compensation of Nazism's victim shifted this practice, ushering in a novel moral economy of international reparations. Yet, while recent decades have seen increased transnational activism around reparations, as well as interstate aid payments and official apologies, international reparations remain infrequent, and agreements often fail to end financial claims. This paper argues that one explanation for this lackluster record is a central paradox relating to finality. Though international reparations are designed to settle accounts and provide a basis for deeper reconciliation, by opening issues of traumatic memory to public debate, they often achieve the opposite effect and inspire a cascade of further financial claims. As evidence, we examine three cases of international reparations' occurrence and rejection: Germany's reparations for Nazi-era crimes, the United Nations Compensation Commission (UNCC) formation following Iraq's invasion of Kuwait, and reparations negotiated but removed from the 1973 Paris Peace Accords. Recent work on trauma and memory in international relations has sought to emphasize the key role trauma plays in state and community formation, security policies, the mediatization of atrocities, and transitional and social justice. This article problematizes the doxology of trauma in this body of work: the assumptions about the traumatic that go without saying because they come without saying in the discipline. We counter, in particular, international relations' unreflective consumption of Cathy Caruth's paradigm of trauma as an incomprehensible shock. In this article, we excavate the contours, origins, and effects of this doxology. We first use the examples of post-conflict struggles for truth and reconciliation and the COVID-19 pandemic to illustrate that international relations' vision of trauma centralizes a psychiatric and medicalized paradigm of governance and management that depoliticizes suffering. We then seek to provide an alternative account of trauma woven in dialogue with the psychoanalytical reflections of Francophone and Lusophone scholars in the Black Radical Tradition, particularly Fanon, Mbembe, Kilomba, Nascimento and Gonzalez. The goal is to move from a theory of trauma-as-event to an understanding of (colonial/racial) trauma as it appears in the writings of those who never felt protected or at peace in the white colonial order. Objectives: The present study aims to evaluate the impact of early exposure to brain injury and malnutrition on episodic memory and behavior. Methods: For this, a systematic review was carried out in the Medline/Pubmed, Web of Science, Scopus, and LILACS databases with no year or language restrictions. Results: Initially, 1759 studies were detected. After screening, 53 studies remained to be read in full. The meta-analysis demonstrated that exposure to double insults worsens episodic recognition memory but does not affect spatial memory. Early exposure to low-protein diets has been demonstrated to aggravate locomotor and masticatory sequelae. Furthermore, it reduces the weight of the soleus muscle and the muscle fibers of the masseter and digastric muscles. Early exposure to high-fat diets promotes an increase in oxidative stress and inflammation in the brain, increasing anxiety- and depression-like behavior and reducing locomotion. Discussion: Epigenetic modifications were noted in the hippocampus, hypothalamus, and prefrontal cortex depending on the type of dietetic exposure in early life. These findings demonstrate the impact of the double insult on regions involved in cognitive and behavioral processes. Recently, South Korea has become one of the largest content providers for Netflix. We analyze the textual characteristics of five Netflix Originals K-dramas – Sweet Home (2020), My Name (2021), Squid Game (2021), Hellbound (2021), and All of Us Are Dead (2022) – to unfold the existing genre conventions and uniquely local factors in the context of transnational television. In the process of transnationalization, genres are continuously and simultaneously evolving in the directions of homogenization and heterogenization. Universal values such as humanism, altruism, and family-oriented solidarity, as expected in the existing genre conventions, were homogenizing factors. However, these homogenizing factors were accompanied by uniquely local, heterogenizing factors arising from traumatic collective memories, political, and economic situations in South Korea. We also found that webtoons played a significant role in the transnationalization of the K-dramas genre. This study contributes to genre studies and transnational television research. Blood-brain barrier disruption (BBBd) occurs in aging, particularly in regions vulnerable to Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology. However, its relationship to pathological protein accumulation, neurodegeneration, and cognitive impairment in normal aging is unclear. We used dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI (DCE-MRI) and positron emission tomography (PET) imaging in cognitively normal older adults to explore how BBBd correlates with brain atrophy and cognitive function, and whether these relationships are influenced by Aβ or tau. We found that greater BBBd in the hippocampus (HC) and an averaged BBBd-susceptible ROI were linked to worse episodic memory, with interactions between BBBd and atrophy influencing this relationship, independent of Aβ and tau. However, there were no significant relationships between BBBd and non-memory cognitive performance. In participants with longitudinal AD biomarker and cognitive data acquired prior to DCE-MRI, faster longitudinal entorhinal cortex (EC) tau accumulation and episodic memory decline were associated with greater HC BBBd, independent of global Aβ changes and regional atrophy. Subcortical functional abnormalities are believed to contribute to clinical symptoms and cognitive impairments in major depressive disorder (MDD). By introducing functional gradient mapping, the present study evaluated subcortical gradients in MDD patients and their association with cognitive features. Organization patterns and between-group differences in the principal subcortical gradient were investigated in 145 never-treated first-episode MDD patients and 145 healthy controls (HCs) across limbic, thalamic, and basal ganglia (BG) systems and their structural and functional subregions. We also assessed the associations between significant gradient alterations and clinical characteristics and neuropsychological functioning. Overall, MDD patients showed a relatively compressed and disturbed gradient organization than HCs, with limbic and BG regions located at the two extreme ends of the principal gradient. Specifically, MDD patients had lower principal gradient values in thalamus and limbic system but higher values in BG than HCs. These gradient alterations, associated with intrinsic Euclidian distance and functional connectivity patterns, manifested as spatial rearrangements of gradient values within each respective subregion. Lower gradient values in thalamic subregion projecting to default mode network were associated with higher principal gradient values in BG subregion projecting to ventral attention network, and these gradient alterations were correlated with poorer episodic memory performance in MDD patients. The specific neuropathological mechanisms driving the gradient alterations still require further investigation. Opposing gradient alterations in the thalamic and BG regions synergistically impact episodic memory performance in MDD, revealing an internally differentiated and cognition related pattern of subcortical gradient dysfunction in MDD. • MDD patients exhibited multiscale connectome gradient dysfunctions relative to HCs. • Gradient differences were linked to intrinsic geometric distance and FC changes. • Gradient interactions between thalamus and BG were linked to episodic memory in MDD. This study investigates the role of music during bereavement. Music plays a role in peoples' bereavement experiences and gets associated with numerous memories. Despite widespread recognition of the importance of music, little research has considered what bereaved individuals "gain" through their musical selections. This study takes a uses and gratifications approach to analyze interview data about how bereaved individuals incorporate music in their grief journey. Interviews were conducted with 28 participants. Two coders analyzed the data to identify common themes regarding uses of music during bereavement. Data show 5 reasons the bereaved offer for using music: creating connections, co-presence, positive and negative mood management, and projection. The findings demonstrate everyday ways that individuals process their grief in a way that has been largely ignored in the bereavement literature and offer insight into the ways that music can be strategically used by laypeople to process grief. Paradoxically, it may be the Germans who feel this pain the least, as they have nowhere left to escape the curse of their role as perpetrators. This article presents the results of research on the memory of the events in Hungary, the last theatre of Hitler's European campaign against the Jews. The researchers returned to the sites of the drama that unfolded in the summer of 1944, searching for traces of the vanished Jewish life in both the physical and social-psychological spaces, where the void created by the destruction of the Jews is filled with fear, distrust, confusion, silence, and cognitive dissonance. Based on the research findings, it can be stated that 80 years after the Holocaust, in Hungarian villages, small towns, and Budapest, both within and outside the current national borders, today, in Macbeth's words, "nothing is, but what is not". Background: In nature, animals must learn to recognize danger signals and respond immediately to threats to improve their environmental adaptation. However, excessive fear responses can lead to diseases such as post-traumatic stress disorder, wherein traumatic events result in persistent traumatic memories. Therefore, erasing pathological fear memories in vivo is a crucial topic in neuroscience for understanding the nature of memories and treating clinically relevant diseases. Main text: This article reviews recent studies on fear memory erasure, erasure of short- and long-term memory, fear memory erasure and neuroplasticity, the neural circuitry and molecular mechanisms of fear memory erasure, and the roles of engram cells and perineuronal nets in memory erasure. Conclusion: Research on the mechanism of memory erasure is limited, and a plausible explanation for the essential difference between memory erasure and memory extinction still needs to be provided. Notably, this review may guide future studies on fear memory and its underlying molecular mechanisms, which may help to develop novel treatment strategies for post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and other mental disorders. Simulation theory is a radical and yet increasingly popular view about episodic memory. It is the view that episodic memory and episodic simulation are the same natural kind. I argue that while simulation theory offers an important insight, it also makes an overreach. While episodic memory and episodic simulation likely reflect a common natural kind, they also differ in natural kind. AbstractObjectiveMethodsResultsConclusionThis study evaluated the reliability and validity of the In-Out-Test for detecting episodic memory deficits in stroke patients and explored its potential as a clinical test.A total of 75 stroke patients and 120 healthy controls underwent tests, including the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), Picture-Based Memory Impairment Screen (PMIS), and In-Out-Test. Reliability metrics (Cronbach’s α, inter-scorer reliability, test-retest reliability), criterion validity, corrected item-total correlation, hierarchical regression analysis and ROC curve analysis were performed to determine the sensitivity and specificity of the In-Out-Test.Stroke patients scored lower across all tests (p < 0.001), with the largest difference in the In-Out-Test (d = 0.99). The In-Out-Test correlated strongly with other cognitive tests (r = 0.79–0.85 in stroke patients; r = 0.66–0.78 in controls). It explained an additional 4.5% of variance in MoCA-MIS scores (p < 0.001). Reliability was high (Cronbach’s α = 0.835; inter-rater ICCs = 0.911–0.925; test-retest ICCs = 0.764–0.802). ROC analysis showed an AUC of 0.747, with a sensitivity of 0.708 and specificity of 0.680 at a cutoff of 10.5.Preliminary findings indicated that the In-Out-Test showed potential in detecting episodic memory impairments in stroke patients, warranting further validation in larger cohorts. The PCL-5 is a psychometrically sound measure of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) symptoms. Although the scale is commonly applied to past external traumas (e.g., combat, assault), PTSD symptoms have also been assessed about potentially life-threatening cardiovascular events that represent ongoing internal threats. To date, there is a paucity of studies that have examined the updated scale factor structure for PTSD in patients with suspected acute coronary syndromes (ACS). Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses (EFA, CFA) were conducted using PCL-5 data completed by 830 patients enrolled in the REactions to Acute Care and Hospitalization (REACH) study, an observational cohort study of patients recruited from the emergency department during evaluation for ACS. Follow-up measurement invariance tests were conducted on pre-selected models and on the best-fitting model identified by EFA to evaluate invariance across diagnosis (confirmed v. rule-out ACS), sex, and language. The EFA identified a two-factor model with "Memories of Trauma" (MT) and "Cognitive Behavioral Symptoms" (CBS) factors offering a balanced fit and interpretability. In CFAs, the Anhedonia CFA model performed the best overall. Measurement invariance tests supported strong invariance across confirmed and ruled-out ACS, male and female sex, and English and Spanish language for all models. Only 34 % of the sample was diagnosed with ACS at discharge, which limits generalizability. Purpose: We conducted a proof-of-concept study to evaluate the effects of galantamine treatment versus placebo combined to cognitive rehabilitation (CR) after stroke. Materials and methods: In this 12-week, double blinded, randomized, controlled trial, patients were assigned to either combined approach of galantamine and CR (G-CR) or placebo and CR (P-CR). Primary outcome was the proportion of patients who crossed over from vascular cognitive disorder (VCD) to no-VCD at 12 weeks. Secondary outcomes included changes in cognition, mood, quality of life and the N-back fMRI paradigm, assessed at baseline, 6 and 12 weeks and after an 8-week washout period. Results: Ten patients were allocated to G-RC group, 12 to the P-RC group. After 12 weeks, 40.1% of all patients converted to no-VCD with similar proportions between groups. Both groups showed improvements in episodic and working memory, executive and quality of life after 6 weeks of CR. Decreased depression and anxiety were noted, and all benefits persisted after the washout period. An interaction effect was observed in the right parietal lobule during the N-back task. Conclusions: Interventions lead to improved cognition and distinct cortical reorganization without being able to establish correlation between neural changes and behavioral measures. Introduction: It has long been known that highly arousing emotional single items are better recollected than low arousing neutral items. Despite the robustness of this memory advantage, emotional arousing events may not always promote the retrieval of source details (i.e., source memory) or associated neutral information. Methods: To shed more light on these effects, we pooled data from seven different studies (N = 333) to investigate the role of emotion on item-context binding in episodic memory, as well as potential interacting factors (e.g., encoding instructions, type of retrieval task, or acute stress). In all studies, participants incidentally encoded common neutral objects (i.e., items), overlaid on different pleasant, neutral, or unpleasant background scenes (i.e., contexts). One week later, the encoded objects were presented intermixed with new ones and memory for item and source contextual details was tested, also considering the contribution of recollection and familiarity-based processes. Results: Linear mixed models revealed a recollection-based retrieval advantage for unpleasant and pleasant source contextual details compared to neutral ones. Bayes hypothesis-testing analysis further indicated decisive evidence in favor of a relevant role of emotional arousal and recollection in source contextual memory. Regarding item memory, linear mixed models revealed enhanced recollection-based memory for items encoded in pleasant contexts compared to their neutral and unpleasant counterparts. However, Bayes analysis revealed strong to moderate evidence for models without affective category (or its interactions), indicating that the affective category of contexts in which objects were paired during encoding had little influence on item memory performance. Discussion: The present results are discussed in relation to existing evidence and current neurobiological models of emotional episodic memory by also emphasizing the role of predictive processing as a useful conceptual framework to understand the effects of emotion on memory for source details and associated neutral information. The hippocampus's vulnerability to trauma-induced stress can lead to pathophysiological disturbances that precipitate the development of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The mechanisms of resilience that foster remission and mitigate the adverse effects of stress remain unknown. We analyzed the evolution of hippocampal morphology between 2016/2017 and 2018/2019, as well as the memory control mechanisms crucial for trauma resilience. Participants were individuals exposed to the 2015 Paris terrorist attacks (N = 100), including chronic (N = 34) and remitted (N = 19) PTSD, and nonexposed (N = 72). We found that normalization of inhibitory control processes, which regulate the resurgence of intrusive memories in the hippocampus, not only predicted PTSD remission but also preceded a reduction in traumatic memories. Improvement in control mechanisms was associated with the interruption of stress-induced atrophy in a hippocampal region that includes the dentate gyrus. Episodic memory strongly declines in healthy aging, at least partly because of reduced abilities to create and remember associations (associative memory) and to use efficient memory strategies. Several studies have shown that drawing the to-be-remembered material is a reliable encoding tool to enhance memory of individual items (item memory) because it simultaneously integrates elaborative, pictorial, and motoric processes. These processes in isolation can enhance associative memory in older adults. Nevertheless, their simultaneous impact on associative memory has never been investigated in drawing as an encoding tool. We aimed to investigate whether drawing as an encoding tool not only enhances item memory, but whether its benefit extends to associative memory in younger and older adults. Therefore, we tested 101 older and 100 younger participants in two online experiments and one in-person experiment. Using a memory task for unrelated word-pairs, we compared relational drawing and repeatedly writing (non-relational) as encoding tools and assessed immediate recognition memory of items and associations. In Experiment 2, we additionally assessed recognition memory after 1 week. The findings were consistent across the three experiments: while younger participants benefited from drawing over writing in item and associative memory, older participants benefited in item but not in associative memory. The observed effects remained after 1 week. Thus, we could extend the benefit of drawing to relational drawing in associative memory in younger adults. The lack of benefit in older adults' associative memory might be explained by age-related difficulties in benefiting from memory strategies, and in creating and retrieving associations. Background/Objectives: Sexual minority older adults (SMOAs) report greater subjective cognitive decline (SCD) than heterosexual older adults (HOAs). This study aimed to compare the impact of multiple psycho-social risk factors on objective and subjective cognitive decline in HOAs and SMOAs. Methods: Two samples of self-identified HOAs and SMOAs were selected from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing. Reliable change indices for episodic and semantic memory were created to assess cognitive decline. SCD was self-reported for memory and general cognition. Depressive symptoms, loneliness, marital status and socio-economic status were investigated as risk factors. Results: No between-group differences were found in cognitive decline. Higher depression was associated with greater SCD risk and worse semantic memory decline. The latter effect was stronger in SMOAs. The findings were largely replicated in the sensitivity analysis. Conclusions: Poor mental health may represent the strongest driver of cognitive decline in SMOAs and to a greater extent than in HOAs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It has long been hypothesized that episodic memory supports adaptive decision making by enabling mental simulation of future events. Yet, attempts to characterize this process are surprisingly rare. On one hand, memory research is often carried out in settings that are far removed from ecological contexts of decision making. On the other hand, models of adaptive choice only invoke episodic memory in highly stylized terms, if at all. To address these gaps, we propose TCM-SR, a novel process-level model that grounds model-based evaluation in empirically informed dynamics of episodic recall. In this model, the probability of retrieving each available memory is governed by the successor representation, a biologically plausible world model in reinforcement learning. The evolution of these probabilities based on past retrievals, in turn, is dictated by the temporal context model, a prominent model of episodic retrieval. Through simulations and analytical derivations, we show that the patterns of episodic retrieval suggested by this model enables flexible computation of decision variables. On this basis, a number of previously described features of episodic memory might serve an adaptive purpose in sequential decision making. For instance, we show that the contiguity effect, a well-known bias in episodic retrieval, enables mental simulation via model-based rollouts to inform decisions. We also show that backward retrieval and emotional modulation improve generalization and the efficiency of decisions given limited experience. By bridging computational models across these two domains, we make several theoretical and empirical predictions linking episodic memory to adaptive choice in sequential tasks. Objective: Memory dysfunction is a persistent cognitive symptom following traumatic brain injury (TBI), negatively impacting capacity for independent living and productivity. Traditional scoring of neuropsychological memory tests does not allow for differentiation of specific impairments of encoding, consolidation and/or retrieval, or the potential impact of strategy deficits. Method: The current study examined performance of 142 moderate-to-severe TBI participants and 68 demographically matched healthy controls on the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test (RAVLT) using Item Specific Data Analysis (ISDA) and strategy use analyses. Results: Results revealed significantly greater impairments in encoding, consolidation, and retrieval in TBI participants, compared to controls. Encoding deficits significantly explained the most variance in the long-delayed recall of TBI participants, followed by consolidation, and then retrieval. Participants with TBI showed a reduced ability to spontaneously apply strategies during learning, evident in decreased subjective clusters and increased word omissions, compared to controls. No difference was found between groups in passive learning strategy application, shown through serial clustering. Spontaneous strategy measures both uniquely accounted for variance in the encoding ability of TBI participants. Conclusions: These findings highlight the potential value in using ISDA and strategy use measures to assess RAVLT results to better characterize individual memory profiles and inform rehabilitative interventions. Episodic retrieval plays a functional-adaptive role in supporting divergent creative thinking, the ability to creatively combine different pieces of information. However, the same constructive memory process that provides this benefit can also lead to memory errors. Prior behavioral work has shown that there is a positive correlation between the false recognition of lure items in the Deese-Roediger-McDermott paradigm, and divergent creative thinking as assessed on the alternate uses task. Here, we conducted a meta-analysis of functional magnetic resonance imaging studies to test for convergence in the neural substrates associated with these cognitive linkages. Our individual meta-analyses of false recognition-related activity as well as divergent thinking-related neural activity replicated prior meta-analyses. However, there was no significant statistical overlap across the neural regions associated with false recognition and divergent creative thinking.
