This study focuses on improving the mechanical properties and microstructure of cement-based materials, which are crucial for the durability and safety of construction projects. Conventional cement, although commonly used, has certain limitations in terms of its mechanical strength and durability. Therefore, there is a requirement for innovative methods to enhance these properties. This study investigates the potential of nano-TiO2 (titanium dioxide) as an additive to overcome these limitations. The objective of this research is to perform a thorough experimental analysis to examine how different concentrations of nano-TiO2 impact the mechanical performance and microstructural changes in cement paste and mortar. The study examines the influence of nano-TiO2 on the compressive and flexural strengths of cementitious materials. It also explores how nano-TiO2 modifies the microstructure to enhance compactness and resilience. The results suggest that incorporating nano-TiO2 into cement leads to a substantial improvement in both compressive and flexural strengths. This enhancement is particularly notable when the nano-TiO2 concentration is at an optimal level of 1.0% by weight. The SEM and XRD analyses demonstrate that this concentration enhances the microstructure by decreasing voids and facilitating the development of C-S-H crystals. However, excessive concentration may have negative consequences, such as the creation of extra empty spaces. The results indicate that nano-TiO2 has considerable promise in enhancing cement-based materials, thereby aiding the advancement of construction materials that are more long-lasting and effective. This study contributes to the knowledge of how nano-TiO2 improves cement and emphasizes its potential uses in the construction sector.

Abstract Bacterial therapy for colorectal cancer (CRC) represents a burgeoning frontier. The probiotic Limosilactobacillus fermentum GR-3, derived from traditional food “Jiangshui”, exhibited superior antioxidant capacity by producing indole derivatives ICA and IPA. In an AOM/DSS-induced CRC mouse model, GR-3 treatment alleviated weight loss, colon shortening, rectal bleeding and intestinal barrier disruption by reducing oxidative stress and inflammation. GR-3 colonization in distant colon induced apoptosis and reduced tumor incidence by 51.2%, outperforming the control strain and vitamin C. The beneficial effect of GR-3 on CRC was associated with gut microbiome modulation, increasing SCFA producer Lachnospiraceae NK4A136 group and suppressing pro-inflammatory strain Bacteroides. Metagenomic and metabolic analyses revealed that GR-3 intervention upregulated antioxidant genes (xseA, ALDH) and butyrate synthesis gene (bcd), while increasing beneficial metabolites (SCFAs, ICA, IPA, VB12 and VD3) and reducing harmful secondary bile acids. Overall, GR-3 emerges as a promising candidate in CRC therapy, offering effective gut microbiome remediation.

Wastewater treatment by microalgae is an eco-friendly and sustainable method for pollutant removal and biomass generation. Microalgae production under abiotic stress (such as salinity/salt stress) has an impact on nutrient removal and fatty acid accumulation. In this study, a freshwater microalgal strain (Desmodesmus communis GEEL-12) was cultured in municipal wastewater with various NaCl concentrations (ranging from 25–150 mM). The growth kinetics and morphological changes of the microalgae were observed. The nutrient removal, salinity change, fatty acid composition, and biodiesel quality under various groups were also investigated. The maximum growth of D. communis GEEL-12 was observed in the control group at 0.48 OD680nm. The growth inhibition was observed under high salt conditions (150 mM), which showed poor tolerance with 0.15 OD680nm. The nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) removal significantly decreased from 99–81% and 5.0–5.9% upon the addition of 100–150 mM salt, respectively. Palmitic acid (C16:0) and stearic acid (C18:0) were the most common fatty acid profiles. The abundance of C18:0 enhanced from 49.37%–56.87% in D. communis GEEL-12 upon high NaCl concentrations (100–150 mM). The biodiesel quality index of D. communis GEEL-12 under 50–75 mM salt concentrations reached the levels advised by international standards.

Earthmoving activity is considered one of the most critical elements in construction projects. The overall cost of earthmoving activity during construction projects can account for more than 30% of the total cost. Moreover, earthmoving equipment emits enormous carbon, which has adverse environmental effects. A mathematical model is needed to optimize the selection of the equipment types (i.e., trucks and excavators) and the numbers of each type to be employed on a particular project, based on the work capacity of each unit, the number of units, and the speed at which each unit travels. The model proposed here is based on a genetic algorithm (GA) based optimization technique for planning earthmoving projects. The model has three main steps: (1) identify all the relevant decision variables for choosing the earthmoving equipment, (2) derive a mathematical optimization model, and (3) apply multi-objective genetic algorithms. For a particular selection of earthmoving units, the model can show how the total project costs will vary concerning the time allowed to complete the project while also providing data showing the total amount of carbon emissions and fuel consumption for the entire project. Data derived from a real-world earthmoving project was employed to test and validate the model. The model was able to show the potential for saving substantial cost and time. On average, the optimization model showed how to obtain savings of 14.35% and 9.5% for the time and the cost objectives, respectively, along with significant reductions in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. These results suggest that the proposed optimization model would be a valuable tool to support contractors and construction management engineers to minimize earthmoving projects' time and cost.

Procambarus clarkii (crayfish) accumulates a high concentration of Arsenic (As) from the aquatic environment and causes considerable human health risks. In this study, Limosilactobacillus fermentum GR-3 strain was isolated from “Jiangshui” and applied for As(III) adsorption and antioxidant abilities. Strain GR-3 removed 50.67% of 50 mg/L As(III) and exhibited the high antioxidant potential of DPPH (1,1-Diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) (87.63%) and hydroxyl radical (74.51%) scavenging rate in vitro. P. clarkii was feed with strain GR-3, the results showed that As(III) concentration reduced, and residual level in hepatopancreas was decreased by 36%, compared to As(III)-exposed group (control). Gut microbial sequencing showed that strain GR-3 restores gut microbiota dysbiosis caused by As(III) exposure. Further application in the field scale was performed and revealed a decrease in As(III) accumulation and increasing 50% aquaculture production of the total output. In summary, feed-additive probiotic is recommended as a novel strategy to minimize aquaculture foods toxicity and safe human health.

Deposition and precipitation of paraffin wax in pipelines are major problems in the production, transfer, storage, and processing of crude oil. To prevent complete clogging, it is necessary to minimize and remove deposited wax in pipelines and tubing. Significant research has been done addressing the mechanisms of wax formation and its composition. In this review, the status of research and perspectives on the occurrence and characterization of the paraffin wax that forms in crude oil developing wells and pipelines has been critically reviewed. Several approaches for detecting paraffin wax and managing wax formation damage during oil recovery were discussed. This review also highlighted the effects of temperature and crude oil type on wax formation.

Biomass is a crucial energy resource used for the generation of electricity and transportation fuels. Microalgae exhibit a high content of biocomponents which makes them a potential feedstock for the generation of ecofriendly biofuels. Biofuels derived from microalgae are suitable carbon-neutral replacements for petroleum. Fermentation is the major process for metabolic conversion of microalgal biocompounds into biofuels such as bioethanol and higher alcohols. In this review, we explored the use of all three major biocomponents of microalgal biomass including carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids for maximum biofuel generation. Application of several pretreatment methods for enhancement the bioavailability of substrates (simple sugar, amino acid, and fatty acid) was discussed. This review goes one step further to discuss how to direct these biocomponents for the generation of various biofuels (bioethanol, higher alcohol, and biodiesel) through fermentation and transesterification processes. Such an approach would result in the maximum utilization of biomasses for economically feasible biofuel production.

Introduction: Telemicrobiology is a growing component of clinical microbiology informatics. However, few studies have been performed to assess the diagnostic utility of telemicroscopy systems in evaluating infectious agents. Objective: Evaluate multiple contemporary digital pathology platforms for use in diagnostic telemicrobiology. Materials and Methods: A mix of thirty cases that included viral, bacterial, fungal, and parasitological findings were evaluated by four experts using ×40 whole slide imaging (WSI) scans, ×83 oil-immersion WSI scans, ×100 oil-immersion WSI scans, digital photomicrographs, and glass slides. Results: The ×83 WSI, ×100 WSI, and photomicrograph interpretations were not significantly different in quality and accuracy when compared to glass slide interpretations. The ×40 WSI interpretations were of lower quality and were more likely to be incorrect when compared to glass slide interpretations. Conclusions: In this study, high magnification, oil-immersion digital pathology platforms are better suited to support telemicrobiology applications and yield interpretations on par with glass slide evaluations.
