Pollution of the environment with plastic is an important concern of the modern world. It is estimated that annually over 350 million tonnes of this material are produced, wherein, despite the recycling methods, a significant part is deposited in the environment. The plastic has been detected in the industrial areas, as well as farmlands and gardens in many world regions. Larger plastic pieces degraded in time into smaller pieces including microplastic (MP) and nanoplastic particles (NP). Nanoplastic is suggested to pose the most serious danger as due to the small size, it is effectively taken up from the environment by the biota and transported within the organisms. An increasing number of reports show that NP exert toxic effects also on plants. One of the most common plant response to abiotic stress factors is the accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). On the one hand, these molecules are engaged in cellular signalling and regulation of genes expression. On the other hand, ROS in excess lead to oxidation and damage of various cellular compounds. This article reviews the impact of NP on plants, with special emphasis on the oxidative response.

In biomedical and optical applications, multifunctional upconverting nanoparticles (UCNPs) play an essential role where non‐invasive temperature sensing and imaging are necessary. UCNPs smaller than 20 nm, which can be excited under 808 nm wavelength, are particularly promising in this area and can be implemented in humans or other mammals. However, new versatile nanoprobes are still needed for biology, especially for challenging studies of small aquatic invertebrates. Such tools allow better monitoring and understanding of their physiology, biochemistry, and ecological responses, which is crucial due to the growing pollution of water reservoirs and climate change. Herein, multifunctional NaYF4:Yb3+, Er3+@NaNdF4:Yb3+ core@shell NPs (15 nm), forming stable aqueous colloids, exhibiting intense emissions under excitation in the first biological window (808 nm), and presenting high thermal sensitivity and resolution related to the thermally coupled energy levels of Er3+ ions, are designed and synthesized. Such properties of UCNPs are further utilized for optical imaging of aquatic invertebrates (Daphnia magna) and temperature detection inside their bodies under 808 nm excitation. This pioneering application of NaYF4:Yb3+, Er3+@NaNdF4:Yb3+ demonstrates the high potential of developed UCNPs for multifunctional applications, especially for bioimaging and temperature sensing within whole organisms. The dataset presented in this data paper supports ''Linking land cover satellite data with dietary variation and reproductive output in an opportunistic forager: Arable land use can boost an ontogenetic trophic bottleneck in the White Stork Ciconia ciconia'' (Orłowski et al. 2019) [1]. Analysis of data on diet and prey composition based on an investigation of 165 pellets of White Storks Ciconia ciconia sampled from 52 nests showed that their diet was based primarily on ‘eurytopic prey’ (embracing taxa from grassland and a variety of non-cropped habitats), the biomass contribution of which in the diet was disproportionately (3–4–fold) higher than the percentage of available corresponding habitats. Similarly, prey items from water/wetland sites prevailed over the availability of corresponding habitats. The opposite pattern characterized prey taxa from arable habitats and forests, the contribution of which was lower than the availability of the corresponding habitats. The total energy content per pellet (calculated by summing the energy content of all individual prey items across one specific prey group) was the most strongly correlated with the biomass of Orthoptera, thereafter with that of mammals, other vertebrates, earthworms and other invertebrates, but not with the biomass of Coleoptera. White Storks from nests of low productivity pairs (i.e. with 1–2 fledglings) consumed a significantly (up to two-fold) higher biomass of Coleoptera, Orthoptera and all invertebrates, which also translated into a higher total biomass and a higher total energy content compared to the diet of high-productivity pairs (i.e. with 3–4 fledglings). Our data, in particular those relating to energy content in a variety of invertebrate taxa, and their body mass and functional division in terms of habitat preferences should be useful for other researchers to calculate energy budgets of predatory animals living in agricultural landscapes in Europe.

The increasing application of lanthanide-doped nanocrystals (LDNCs) entails the risk of a harmful impact on the natural environment. Therefore, in the presented study the influence of gadolinium orthovanadates doped with Eu3+ (GdVO4:Eu3) nanocrystals on wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), chosen as a model plant species, was investigated. The seeds were grown in Petri dishes filled with colloids of LDNCs at the concentrations of 0, 10, 50 and 100 µg/mL. The plants’ growth endpoints (number of roots, roots length, roots mass, hypocotyl length and hypocotyl mass) and germination rate were not significantly changed after the exposure to GdVO4:Eu3+ nanocrystals at all used concentrations. The presence of LDNCs also had no effect on oxidative stress intensity, which was determined on the basis of the amount of lipid peroxidation product (thiobarbituric acid reactive substances; TBARS) in the roots. Similarly, TTC (tetrazolium chloride) assay did not show any differences in cells’ viability. However, root cells of the treated seedlings contained less Evans Blue (EB) when compared to the control. The obtained results, on the one hand, suggest that GdVO4:Eu3+ nanocrystals are safe for plants in the tested concentrations, while on the other hand they indicate that LDNCs may interfere with the functioning of the root cell membrane.

It is suggested that the products of oxidation are not solely the markers of oxidative stress but also signaling elements. For instance, it has been shown in animal models that mRNA oxidation is a selective process engaged in post-transcriptional regulation of genes expression and that it is associated with the development of symptoms of several neurodegenerative disorders. In the present study, we examined the impact of short-term cadmium (Cd) stress on the level of two RNA oxidation markers: 8-hydroxyguanosine (8-OHG) and apurinic/apyrimidinic sites (AP-sites, abasic sites). In the case of 8-OHG, a significant increase was observed after 3 h of exposure to moderate Cd concentration (10 mg/l). In turn, high level of AP-sites, accompanied by strong ROS accumulation and lipid peroxidation, was noted only after 24 h of treatment with higher Cd concentration (25 mg/l). This is the first report showing induction of RNA oxidations in plants response to stress factors. The possible signaling and gene regulatory role of oxidatively modified transcripts is discussed.

Lanthanide‐doped nanoparticles (NPs) exhibit temperature‐dependent luminescence, enabling the design of luminescent nanothermometers for industrial and medical applications. This research demonstrates the temperature‐sensing properties of NaYF4:7.5%Er3+@NaYF4 and NaErF4@NaYF4 NPs, which have a hexagonal shape and average size of 17 nm. Their core@shell structure is confirmed using high‐resolution transmission electron microscopy, and they exhibit intense upconversion (UC) emission under 1532 nm excitation in H2O and D2O colloids. The recorded spectra show Er3+ emission bands with varying intensity ratios depending on the Er3+ concentration, chosen solvent, and temperature. The spectroscopic properties of the studied NPs allow for their excitation and observation of emission within biological windows, which makes them useful for bio‐related applications. The emission of prepared NPs is analyzed as a function of temperature from 298 up to 358/363 K in H2O and D2O. The ratios for thermally‐coupled levels  and non‐TCLs and their relative sensitivities are studied. For the high dopant concentration sample in water, the O─H vibrations and blue shift in the absorption spectrum lead to a record relative sensitivity of 2.50% K−1 (at 363 K) for the 2H11/2/4I11/2 ratio. The use of synthesized NPs for bioimaging under 1550 nm excitation is also demonstrated to observe their accumulation in the guts of Daphnia magna. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Every species has certain habitat requirements, which may be altered by interactions with other co-occurring species. These interactions are mostly ignored in predictive models trying to identify key habitat variables correlated with species population abundance/occurrence. We investigated how the structure of the urban landscape, food resources, potential competitors, predators, and interaction between these factors influence the abundance of house sparrow Passer domesticus and the tree sparrow P. montanus in sixty 25 ha plots distributed randomly across residential areas of the city of Poznań (Poland). The abundance of the house sparrow was positively correlated with the abundance of pigeons but negatively correlated with human-related food resources. There were significant interaction terms between abundances of other urban species and habitat variables in statistical models. For example, the abundance of house sparrow was negatively correlated with the abundance of corvids and tree sparrows but only when food resources were low. The abundance of tree sparrows positively correlated with density of streets and the distance from the city center. The abundance of this species positively correlated with the abundance of corvids when food resources were low but negatively correlated at low covers of green area. Our study indicates that associations between food resources, habitat covers, and the relative abundance of two sparrow species are altered by the abundance of other urban species. Competition, niche separation and social facilitation may be responsible for these interactive effects. Thus, biotic interactions should be included not only as an additive effect but also as an interaction term between abundance and habitat variables in statistical models predicting species abundance and occurrence. Salmonellosis is one of the most urgent public health problems across the world. Reptiles are a known reservoir of Salmonella spp. and in some regions they are also associated with human salmonellosis. This concerns especially popular pet reptiles, e.g., turtles or bearded dragons; however, there is also a need for studies regarding wild reptiles as a pathogen source. In this study, sand lizards (Lacerta agilis) were investigated as a potential reservoir of Salmonella spp. in Poznań, Poland, using cloacal swabs and faecal samples. Moreover, clonal analysis of the isolates was conducted using ERIC-PCR fingerprinting. Thirty eight lizards were investigated, nine of which (24%) proved positive for S. enterica subsp. houtenae. The prevalence level was lower than previously observed in exotic species (up to above 40%). Two clones were present in several lizards. Specimens with similar clones were captured at the same location and time, suggesting horizontal transfer of bacterial strains between lizards. Because the isolated subspecies of Salmonella is very rarely reported as a causative agent of human salmonellosis, sand lizards seem to pose little or no threat for public health. Colloidal ferrite spinel nanoparticles (Co xNi1- xFe2O4) were prepared by a microwave-stimulated Bradley technique under nonhydrolytic conditions. The effect of Ni2+ doping on the structural properties was studied by powder XRD. The particle size, hydrodynamic size, and morphology were evaluated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS), which showed mean crystallite sizes of ca. 10 and 60 nm for powder and colloidal suspensions of Co xNi1- xFe2O4, respectively. The cytotoxicity of the nanoparticles was tested against murine macrophages J774.E, osteosarcoma D17 cells, and human red blood cells (RBCs). The adsorption of bovine serum albumin (BSA) was studied, and the BSA showed a high affinity for the surface of the nanoparticles. The Co xNi1- xFe2O4 nanoparticles in colloidal suspension showed dose-dependent cytotoxicity against all of the studied cell lines, and less harmful effects were observed against RBCs at concentrations of up to 0.1 mg/mL. The cytotoxicity towards the D17 and J774.E cells suggests that internalization by the living cells seems to be the key step to elicit the toxic response. Thus, the cytotoxicity of the particles under investigation seems to be cell-type-dependent and not uniform. The Co xNi1- xFe2O4 colloids exhibited superparamagnetic behavior with blocking temperatures ( TB) below 300 K. SrTiO3 nanoparticles co-doped with a broad concentration range of Er3+ and Yb3+ ions were fabricated using the citric route as a function of annealing temperatures of 500–1000 °C. The effect of a broad co-dopant concentration range and sintering temperature on structural and up-conversion properties was investigated in detail by X-ray diffraction techniques and optical spectroscopy. The TEM technique was used to estimate the mean particle size, which was around 30 nm for the inorganic product annealed at 600 °C. Up-conversion emission color tuning was achieved by particle size control. Power dependence of the green and red emissions was found to be a result of temperature determination in the operating range of SrTiO3 nanoparticles and a candidate for the fast and local microscopic heating and heat release induced by IR irradiation. The color changed from white–red–yellow–green upon an increase of sintering temperature, inducing changes in the surface-to-volume ratio and the number of optically active ions in particle surface regions. The cytotoxic activity of nanoparticles on human red blood cells was investigated, showing no harmful effects up to a particle concentration of 0.1 mg ml−1. The cytotoxic response of a colloidal suspension of nanoparticles to RBC cells was connected with the strong affinity of SrTiO3 particles to the cell membranes, blocking the transport of important biological solutes. The widespread use of nest-boxes significantly improved our understanding of the ecology and behaviour of secondary cavity-nesting birds. Although former investigations showed that nest-box characteristics (e.g. physical dimensions, material) may determine where birds will roost or breed, biological consequences of the age of nest-boxes have been rarely investigated with field experiments. To test if age of cavities may influence roosting or breeding behaviour in cavity-nesting birds, we created a set-up of three experimental groups of wooden boxes with the same physical dimensions: old boxes that were occupied at least once for nesting during years prior to this study, old boxes that were never accepted for breeding during years prior to this study, and new boxes. Half of the old boxes were relocated within the study plot and replaced by new ones. Box age did not have an impact on occupation rates during the winter period, and therefore did not seem to influence where the birds roosted. However, breeders occupied the old previously unoccupied boxes less frequently than the other boxes. Moreover, birds bred much earlier in new boxes than in the old boxes that were previously never exploited. We discuss when and how cavity age can influence roosting or breeding in nest-box exploiters. Our results strongly suggest that maintenance procedures of plots where old boxes are replaced by new ones can influence how and where birds will breed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The field cricket Gryllus campestris used to be very common throughout Europe, but in recent decades its population has declined. We study ecology and behavior of crickets near the Odolanów, Poland, between 2009 - 2011, with emphasis on the effects of grazing of cattle and horses on insects population. We compared the number of burrows per square meter on both grazed and non-grazed areas and examined the size of the arena in front of the burrow. We hypothesized that juvenile crickets would have smaller arenas in front of the burrows compared to adults. We also hypothesized that crickets would prefer burrows with entrances facing southwards. We found that: (1) the number of burrows in area grazed by cattle and horses was higher compared to non-grazed areas; (2) there was the interindividual variation in arena size in front of the burrows, with adult insects having bigger arenas in comparison to the arenas of the young; (3) there was diversity in geographical direction of the burrow entrance with the south being the preferred one. We propose that grazing may have a positive impact on biodiversity of meadows biocenosis and is important for the protection of the field cricket populations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents a study on local food resources and the composition of the urban landscape affecting densities of feral pigeons in the city of Poznan in Poland. The density of pigeons showed significant spatial autocorrelation, wherein density of pigeons was seen highest in plots with more tall buildings, a large number of human related food resources, schools and a high part of green space. They were found lower in plots with higher density of streets and located further from the city centre. To avoid their presence residential areas should reportedly have low buildings, local food resources should be thrown in litter bins where animals cannot get them and the public should be educated to refrain from feeding the pigeons.

In ecological and morphological studies, researchers often use body condition index as a measure of an individual's fitness. Our research shows that body condition index may be an unreliable method for this purpose, because changes in lizards' body proportions are not stable during their lifetime. Results obtained from a Polish population of the sand lizard (Lacerta agilis) show that the body length increases faster than the body mass, meaning that the correlation between these 2 parameters is not linear. Herpetologists frequently use the body condition index to compare the fitness of lizards of different ages. Our study demonstrates that this method may not be accurate; in the future, research should strive to develop new ways of measuring lizards' fitness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

For a number of years nanomaterials have been continuously devised and comprehensively investigated because of the growing demand for them and their multifarious applications, especially in medicine. This paper reports on the properties of SrF2 nanoparticles (NPs) for applications in biomedicine, showing effective ways of their synthesis and luminescence under near infrared radiation - upconversion. NPs doped with lanthanide, Ln3+ ions (where Ln = Yb, Ho, Er, Tm) were prepared by the hydrothermal method and subjected to comprehensive studies, from determination of their structure and morphology, revealing small, 15 nm structures, through spectroscopic properties, to cytotoxicity in vitro. The effects of such factors as the reaction time, type and amount of precipitating compounds and complexing agents on the properties of products were characterized. The cytotoxicity of the synthesized and functionalized NPs was investigated, using human fibroblast cell line (MSU-1.1). The synthesized structures may decrease cells' proliferation in a dose-dependent manner in the measured concentration range (up to 100 µg/mL). However, the cells remain alive according to the fluorescent assay. Moreover, the treated cells were imaged using confocal laser scanning microscopy.
