In connection with its geological history, many thermo-mineral springs are present in the Massif Central (France). The physicochemical characteristics of these springs (temperature, mineralization, gas content) result both from their deep circulation and from the geological formations or surface waters with which they interact during their ascent. In mineral springs, diatoms are well represented. To date, no study has focused on coupling the origin of water with diatom communities, whether in the Massif Central or in other parts of the world. The purpose of this study is to cross the information obtained on the water and the diatoms in order to analyse the biodiversity and improve knowledge of the species autecology. Twelve mineral springs with some of which have high levels of radioactivity were studied in the Massif Central. As results, the geochemical facies, the origin of the water and the Total Dissolved Solids influence the taxonomic composition but not the specific richness, Shannon index and Evenness. Furthermore, 222Rn influences diatom richness and community structure. Planothidium frequentissimum, Crenotia angustior and Sellaphora labernardierei were associated with high values of 222Rn activity. The water temperature was a factor that influences diatom species distribution. Some species appears to be more sensitive to the composition of water, such as Planothidium frequentissimum which attests to a mixing between deep and surface waters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Two morphologically similar populations of Didymosphenia were reported from the West Branch of the Farmington River, Connecticut, USA in 2014 and 2016. We described one of them as a new species, D. hullii. The other was observed subsequently in late 2016 and resembled D. geminata, but given the worldwide nuisance characteristic of this species, the identification required confirmation. In this work we used geometric morphometrics analysis to test for quantitative distinctions between the two Connecticut populations, along with two morphologically similar taxa from the literature, D. laticollis and D. pumila. We successfully separated the four entities and confirmed the identity of the second blooming diatom in the Farmington River, Connecticut, as D. geminata, which is the first confirmed report of this species for the state. We conclude that geometric morphometrics, in combination with features viewed with scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy, enhances the ability to distinguish among these morphologically similar species of Didymosphenia. We summarize these findings and pinpoint morphological distinctions that can be used to separate the taxa during routine light microscopy analyses. In the present study, a new species, Nitzschia haloserbica Vidaković, Ector, C.E.Wetzel & Krizmanić, sp. nov., is described from alkaline saline ponds and channels from Vojvodina Province (Serbia). In 2019 the new species was found in four saline ponds: Bela Bara, Čoka Kopovo, Velika Rusanda and Slatina. The same species was recorded four years ago in saline lakes in Hungary, but the authors listed it as Nitzschia sp. 2. The sigmoid valve outline of the new Nitzschia Hassall species is similar to N. austriaca Hust. but differs in striae density and fibulae distribution. In N. haloserbica sp. nov. the transapical striae are so dense that they are not visible in light microscopy. Both species have fibulae that are quite regularly distributed along the raphe canal, but in N. austriaca the central two fibulae are more widely spaced, reflecting the presence of central raphe endings, which are absent in N. haloserbica sp. nov. At the type locality (Bela Bara) both species were found with relative abundances of 94.93 % for N. haloserbica sp. nov. and 1.21 % for N. austriaca (of the 400 valves counting per slide). Thermal springs provide natural laboratories to test the responses of biological communities to various stressors. To date, little is known about how water temperature and chemistry influence the microalgal assemblages in these ecosystems, especially in the circum-Mediterranean area. In this study, we assessed the environmental drivers of benthic diatom assemblages collected from different substrates in 8 thermo-mineral springs of Sardinia, Italy, with a focus on temperature and conductivity. A total of 205 diatom species (67 genera) were found, of which 12 (8 genera) were centric and 193 (59 genera) were pennate. Composition of diatom assemblages was associated with temperature, pH, conductivity, bicarbonates (HCO3−), and sulfates (SO42−). Multivariate analyses also confirmed differences in species composition, richness, diversity, and evenness of diatom assemblages from groups of springs distinguished by temperature and conductivity gradients. We found higher species richness, diversity, and evenness in hyperthermal (water temperature = 52.7−71.5°C) and medium-mineral springs (conductivity = 590−1193 µS/cm). Our results indicate that thermal springs are not always inhospitable environments for diatoms. Springs with high water temperatures hosted rich and diverse diatom assemblages, likely thanks to their ecotonal nature and a combination of multiple local factors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Light and scanning electron microscope observations on the genus Fontina gen. nov. from a thermo-mineral spring of the Massif Central (France) are presented. Based on morphology, the new genus shows features that have not been described previously, such as the stria pattern, interrupted at the valve face/mantle junction and composed of one long, slit-like areola on both valve face and mantle. Externally, areolae are closed by hymenes. Fontina arverna sp. nov. is described as the typus generis of Fontina. This new genus was compared with some similar freshwater genera such as Adlafia, Chamaepinnularia, Genkalia, Germainiella, Microfissurata and Nupela. So far, we are unable to establish an evolutionary link or cladistic association with currently known genera. The new genus is described from a sampling site characterized by high conductivity and high carbonate concentration, brackish conditions and whose water originates deep in the crust (high lithium concentration). Based on two Andean Altiplano samples and on light and scanning electron microscopy analyses, we present six new species of “araphid” diatoms in the genus Pseudostaurosira, P. aedes sp. nov., P. frankenae sp. nov., P. heteropolaris sp. nov., P. oblonga sp. nov., P. occulta sp. nov., and P. pulchra sp. nov. Additional data are provided for four other known taxa, Nanofrustulum cataractarum, N. rarissimum, P. sajamaensis and P. vulpina, the latter species corresponding to a stat. nov. based on a variety of P. laucensis. Each taxon is described morphologically and compared with closely related published taxa, using characters such as axial area, virgae, vimines, areolar shape, volae, internal striae depositions, spines, flaps and apical pore fields, which are not usually used for species distinction within the genus. It is our intention that the detailed morphological descriptions of each taxon and the elaborate comparative tables we provide serve as a basis for correction of neo and paleo-databases for the Altiplano to produce a better account of autecological data and ecological change in the region. Some arguments for our continued use of a morphologically based approach are given in the context of rapid environmental degradation in the Andes and the difficulties in applying molecular approaches in countries such as Bolivia. During a biomonitoring assignment in the Swiss canton Ticino, an unknown Fragilaria taxon was discovered that could not be identified using the currently available literature. The results of a morphological comparison with the type material of F. recapitellata, based on light and scanning electron microscopy, showed that the new Swiss taxon has sufficient differences to be separated as a new species: Fragilaria subrecapitellata sp. nov. The new species can be separated by its lanceolate to elliptic-lanceolate valve outline with convex valve margins, and its smaller valves compared to F. recapitellata. The distribution and iconography of F. recapitellata in literature data is analysed. As a result of this analysis, Fragilaria deformis is appointed as the correct name for the taxon generally known as F. candidagilae or F. capucina var. capitellata (Grunow) Lange-Bertalot in Krammer & Lange-Bertalot.
